Academy of Lifelong Learning Annual Kickoff previews coming year
Vol. 18 – No. 50 Academy of Lifelong Learning Annual Kickoff previews coming year Come join us at the Annual Kickoff on Thurs., July 30, to learn what ALL activities and events are scheduled for the coming year. The event will be held in the Trutter Center on the LLCC Springfield campus. The Kickoff is open to the public, so invite your family, friends, and neighbors who are 50 or older and are interested in continuing learning. This is an ideal time for potential new members to catch a glimpse of ALL. The ALL committees and group displays will be available to offer information, meet the chairs and answer any questions. You may also bring books you want to donate to the book exchange sponsored by the Book Lovers. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.; a brief meeting including special introductions and announcements starts at 10 a.m. followed by light refreshments. Afterwards members and guests can take time to visit the displays, participate in door prize drawings and possibly encounter some surprises. I hope to see you there. Please register with LLCC Enrollment Services. Betty Workman 679-1699 [email protected] July, 2015 Membership in action Patty Mees and Connie Lynn had the opportunity to be interviewed on the Sam Madonia radio show, WFMB 104.5, while he was broadcasting at Brookhills Golf Club on Wed., May 27. They talked about the Swinging Seniors Golf League and other ALL activities that senior listeners might be encouraged to attend. Way to go gals! Using an unplanned moment to promote ALL! The deadline submission for Update articles for the August issue is due no later than July 1 to [email protected]. Page 1 From the Prez. . . . Happy New Year!! Yes, I know it is July, but this month begins our Academy’s year for 2015-16. Since it is our new year, my new year’s resolution is to learn a minimum of two new offerings each month! Then by this time next year, I will be at least 24 times richer in life’s learning experiences. What is your resolution? The best place to find out what topics will be available is at the Annual Kickoff on Thurs, July 30. With announcements, handouts, and some surprises, the Kickoff will preview the upcoming, exciting events and activities scheduled by the committees and interest groups (at least, we consider them exciting for us seniors.) The new Board has already met, and another successful year is anticipated for ALL members. The dues have remained the same as the past two years, and with 13 learning activity groups offering multiple events that are interesting and fun, the $5 a month is a super bargain! However, we realize that with the economy continuing to increase, we need a means to increase our revenue. Increasing the number of ALL members will help, thus the membership drive starts again this month. Also, you will receive information soon about the ALL chilli supper fundraiser that is scheduled in September. For the event to be financially successful, we need the participation and support of ALL members. Enjoy your multiple opportunities in ALL to learn and to meet new friends this year. “When the past calls, let it go to voice mail. It has nothing new to say.” ---unknown Betty Workman 679-1699 [email protected] Notice: renew your membership in ALL for the coming year by July 1! Natural Health Care for mind and body The use of natural products and techniques for “natural health care” will be presented on Tues., July 14, at 10 a.m., in the Robert H. Stephens Room in Menard Hall on the LLCC Springfield campus. Kimberly Luz, Director of Community Outreach at HSHS St. John’s Hospital, will explain the technique for Mindfulness. According to research, practicing Mindfulness can play an important role in strengthening the immune system, alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety, increasing productivity at work, managing chronic pain and generally decreasing the harmful effects of stress on an individual’s overall health and well-being. Kim has been a part of the St. John’s Outreach Team since 2007. To further enhance the presentation, Jen Williamson will be discussing the value of essential oils, and how they can affect your body energy. As a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist, she teaches classes, presents workshops, and offers consultations and energy healing sessions on essential oils. Please register for the Today’s Topic with the LLCC Enrollment Services. Beverly Waldrop 546-593 [email protected] Betty Workman 679-1699 [email protected] Active space missions today Look up and beyond to explore the Today’s Topic on Tues., Aug. 11, starting at 10:00 a.m., in the Robert H. John Sanford 698-0840 [email protected] Patty Mees 652-4829 [email protected] Letter from the Liaison Welcome to the 2015-1016 year for the Academy of Lifelong Learning. As the Academy of Lifelong Learning kicks off a new year, I have a few challenges for you. ALL has so many choices that you simply can’t participate in all of them. But today I challenge you to experiment with a new group. I bet you will meet a new friend. Do something you thought impossible. Learn something new that you thought would never interest you. Will you bike with pedal pushers? Would you attend a Scribes session? Check out the latest Flicks on Friday? Or hop on a bus and Wander on a Wednesday? My second challenge is to bring a friend. If we all just brought one friend and they joined, our membership would be over 600!!! Let’s do this. What a powerful number that would be. Call your neighbor and bring them along to the Kickoff this month. This is a great introduction to the many programs of ALL. ALL values your time and dedication to continued lifelong learning. I challenge you to make this the year that you branch out and volunteer on a committee. When you volunteer for a committee, you help to design the programming and ensure that ALL thrives and offers diversity. We need your help! Pick your favorite group and meet with the chair to help plan future events or step up to chair events on your own. If you are interested in other positions, contact Betty Workman, ALL President. Thank you for renewing your ALL membership and reinvesting in your continued education. I hope that you will consider these challenges and seek new opportunities to grow.
