1995 - St. Francis School
The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrow th;
Then took the other, as ju st as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and w anted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that m orning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet know ing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Som ewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
During my fourth year of a five-year double major in engineering
and economics, I started sitting in on an ethics course taught by a
marvelous professor of philosophy, Donald Davidson.
I subsequently decided that I would become a philosophy
professor rather than a business executive, thereby embarking
down a road less traveled by.
Nineteen years later, in 1977, this journey brought me to
Third & Broadway to establish St. Francis High School. This
route has made a major difference to my life and also, I hope, to
the lives of the teachers and students who have shared the road
with me.
