A Letter from the President
The days are getting shorter and the weather is getting colder – far too fast! Did it seem to you like
this year’s riding season went by a lot quicker than usual? It sure did to me. We’re only a few short
weeks away from the last of our scheduled rides and I really hope the Sundays will all be sunny. I’m
getting my cold weather riding gear out and ready"
The official “2007 officer hunting season” opened at the September club meeting. If you weren’t
there, contact information for nominating committee members and a list of the current candidates are
on page 7 of this newsletter. I know that becoming an officer or serving on a committee for the SRC
can be a difficult decision to make. The hours are bad and the pay is worse. But there are rewards
and it is important work that needs doing. Without the Board, Committee Volunteers and Road Captains we become just a few folks that occasionally get together to ride. The riding is the most important part, of course, but with it we get the choice of an identity and a cohesiveness that the individual
biker doesn’t have. Without our volunteers there would be no Shadow Riders. Think hard about it.
Have you done what you can to keep US rolling?
And finally, I am pleased to announce that the Shadow Riders once again took first place in total
money raised and per capita at Bikers for Babies. It was a real surprise and shows just how far you
can go with a “do our best while NOT competing” attitude. The ride itself got mixed reactions—
depending on where you were in the pack it was great or sometimes pretty spooky. They tell me next
year will be more organized. I had the impression that riders from other clubs didn’t seem to notice
how dangerous some parts of the ride were. It made me appreciate the “safe riding” attitude that is a
part of the SRC identity.

Don’t forget to “fall back” an

get an extra hour of sleep (or
whatever) before the ride.

GM Meeting Report
Page 3
At the September meeting, Larry Wahlers reported a balance of $4200.08 in the general fund,
$269.97 in the Bikers for Babies fund, and $587 in the merchandise fund.
Ryugen deferred his report on Bikers for Babies. Kevin commented on the previous week’s ride
and the upcoming ride. Ira Steuer reported that Rich Bayers routed a nice ride for the September
Saturday Night Out. Marklyn Cobb gave a preliminary report on plans for the Holiday Party in January;
but said she can't set ticket prices until she knows the costs for the food and band.
Bob Mueller, Paul Garlock, and Diana Johnson were appointed as the Nominating Committee for
2007 officers. Several nominations were made from the floor. (Those who agreed to run or are thinking
about it are listed on page 7.)
In the discussion of future directions, the large majority of those present indicated that they were
happy with the club’s current array of activities and that the club’s focus should stay on riding and on
getting new members. Suggestions were made to start the Saturday Nights Out no earlier that 5 pm and
to drop dinner from the Progressive Food Ride. Bob Mueller suggested that we consider hosting a
midnight ride through the city as an alternative fund raiser.

October-November Rides & Special Events
October 15 — Four Ferries (Mark Levin, organizer)
We will be crossing the Missouri, Mississippi, and Illinois Rivers, riding through scenic Calhoun
County, riding 4 different ferry boats, and enjoying a wonderful lunch along the way.
October 22 — Augusta BBQ (Nita Fisher/Diana Johnson, organizers)
A new take on an old favorite (rained out in April). We’ll work our way to North Hwy 94 in St.
Charles and ride through farmland into O’Fallon. We pop out on South 94 to complete our journey
through scenic twists and turns. This ride is approx. 75 miles / 2 hours of riding. We end in Augusta at
the American Legion Hall for BBQ pork steaks and fried chicken with all the fixings. The price for
this all-you-can-eat lunch is $8.50.
* NEW RIDE* October 29 — Frankenstein, MO (Eric Levy, organizer)
Just in time for Halloween, we head for tiny but infamous Frankenstein, Missouri. Nestled in the hills
of the Missouri River Valley, we head along some fun alphabet roads to Hermann, then west on Rt.
100 along the twists and turns of the Missouri River to the top of a lonely hill, where storm clouds
gather over a twisted castle. Or, we just stop for photos under the 'Welcome to Frankenstein' sign. A
fun new ride, with beautiful scenery and good roads.
* NEW RIDE* November 5 — Ferrin, IL (Pete Hoyer, organizer)
This ride takes us to a little church in the rural community of Ferrin, Illinois, almost directly east of St.
Louis and about 8 miles east of Carlyle. They have an annual family style sausage dinner. The price
is about $8.00. The route is about 80 miles and takes us through rural Illinois with some rolling hills
and a few sweeping curves. Total travel time is a about 2 hours.
* NEW RIDE* November 12— West County (Rich Bayers, organizer)
Ride around some seldom covered back roads in western St. Louis County, including the route Rich
put together for the September Saturday Night Out.
November 19 & 26 — Riders’ Choice
Bring your ideas for a ride to Old Orchard by 9:30 am. Riders will decide on the destination.
Wild Bill’s 3rd Annual Chili Cook-off
(sponsored by and held at Ted’s Motorcycle World)
Saturday, November 4, 10-3
Taste samples will sell for 50 cents each. The club is allowed two entries; prize money goes to the
entry’s chosen charity; sample money goes to the club. Each entry must have a name and display
props. Anyone interested in showing off a favorite chili recipe should contact Nita by November 1.
