With the crowd in the Gospel story, we proclaim, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord." Unlike those people in the Gospel who greeted Jesus, we know where this is going. We know that we are included in the crowds who greeted Jesus with joy, and in the same crowds who one week later would shout, "Crucify him!" We live into the story of Christ's glory and his suffering. The reading of the Passion is long and hard to hear. Beginning with the Last Supper, the Passover meal in which Jesus gives himself to us in the bread and wine, through the agonizing prayer in the garden, to the trial, condemnation, and finally the crucifixion, we stand, patiently listening and wondering how we fit into this story. Although told in the past tense, we hear this story in the present tense, knowing that this is our story, one in which we suffer with our crucified Lord. We know also that this will lead to the Resurrection, but for now, we experience the grief and sadness that will be repeated in the rituals later this week: the Mass of Holy Thursday, the service of Good Friday with the veneration of the cross, and the quiet and thoughtful time of Holy Saturday leading to the glorious Easter Vigil. We view Jesus' suffering through the eyes of the women of Galilee as well as the guards and other disciples who watch from a distance. We have a glimpse of our redemption in the conversation of Jesus with "the good thief." Our hearts are broken. We finally recognize the effects of our sinfulness and the great gift that Jesus has given us in the Eucharist and in his death. That recognition can lead us truly to redemption as we contemplate its implication in our lives. We look forward to the Resurrection with eager anticipation of our salvation. Copyright (c) J. S. Pope John Paul established this special celebration of God’s mercy on the day in the year 2000 he canonized Sister Mary Faustina of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Sr. Faustina had been blessed with apparitions of Jesus who showed himself to her in a special way as “Divine Mercy”. According to her diary, the Sunday after Easter, or the “Octave Sunday” of the Easter celebration was to be a special day of invitation to approach Jesus with great trust and expectant faith. The Easter celebration and the this Jubilee of Mercy allows us to focus on performing works of mercy, and spending more time in prayer. Praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Novena to the Divine Mercy helpful. Here at St. Colette we will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday beginning at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 12. The service will include, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Benediction and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Like any other celebration of the Eucharist we read from the Old Testament and the New with Psalms and other ancient hymns and the Gospels. This night is special, and so we recall our beginnings in Creation, our origins in Faith through Abraham, the First Passover of the Exodus, and the instructions given to us by God through the Prophets. These readings help us to know how far back our history goes as the People of God and that God’s plan of salvation for us began even at the dawn of Creation. It is also important for us to keep in touch with the First Passover as the forerunner of our Eucharist.. A special Gospel Alleluia is sung as befits the celebration. Following the homily we have the Rite of Baptism and Confirmation. Together with First Holy Communion this same night they form the Rites of Initiation into the Body of Christ. From ancient days it has been a tradition in the Church to welcome new adult members on this night. Because Baptism is the first experience of Christ passion, death and resurrection these Baptisms on the celebration of Easter are done in a special way. New holy water is blessed; there is an extensive litany of the saints, and the candidates speak for themselves their Baptismal vows. Along with those who are completing their initiation, the newly Baptized are Confirmed immediately. This is a time of great rejoicing because we have new brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ. Some of our “Neophytes”, newly Baptized will bring up the bread and wine at the Rite of Preparation. The Liturgy of the Eucharist then follows as usual. Our dismissal is, as fitting, full of Alleluias. 7 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Is 42:1-7; Ps 27:1-3, 13-14; Jn 12:1-11 Tuesday: Is 49:1-6; Ps 71:1-6, 15, 17; Jn 13:21-33, 36-38 Wednesday: Is 50:4-9a; Ps 69:8-10, 21-22, 31, 33-34; Mt 26:14-25 Thursday: Chrism Mass: Is 61:1-3ab, 6a, 8b-9; Ps 89:21-22, 25, 27; Rv 1:5-8; Lk 4:16-21 Lord's Supper: Ex 12:1-8, 11-14; Ps 116:12-13, 15-16bc, 17-18; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Jn 13:1-15 Friday: Is 52:13 -- 53:12; Ps 31:2, 6, 12-13, 15-16, 17, 25; Heb 4:14-16; 5:7-9; Jn 18:1 -- 19:42 Saturday: a) Gn 1:1 -- 2:2 [1:1, 26-31a]; Ps 104:1-2, 5-6, 10, 12, 13-14, 24, 35; or Ps 33:4-7, 12-13, 20-22; b) Gn 22:1-18 [1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18]; Ps 16: 5, 8-11; c) Ex 14:15 -- 15:1; Ex 15:1-6, 17-18; d) Is 54:5-14; Ps 30:2, 4-6, 11-13; e) Is 55:1-11; Is 12:26; f) Bar 3:9-15, 32 -- 4:4; Ps 19:8-11; g) Ez 36:16-17a, 18-28; Ps 42:3, 5; 43:3-4 or Is 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6 or Ps 51:12-15, 18-19; h) Rom 6:3-11; i) Ps 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23; Lk 24:1-12 Sunday: Acts 10:34a, 37-43; Ps 118:1-2, 16-17, 2223; Col 3:1-4 or 1 Cor 5:6b-8; Jn 20:1-9 or Lk 24:1-12 or (at an afternoon or evening Mass) Lk 24:13-35 8 LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Is 42:1-7; Sal 27 (26):1-3, 13-14; Jn 12:1-11 Martes: Is 49:1-6; Sal 71 (70):1-6, 15, 17; Jn 13:21-33, 36-38 Miércoles: Is 50:4-9a; Sal 69 (68):8-10, 21-22, 31, 3334; Mt 26:14-25 Jueves: Misa del crisma: Is 61:1-3ab, 6a, 8b-9; Sal 89 (88):21-22, 25, 27; Ap 1:5-8; Lc 4:16-21 Cena del Señor: Ex 12:1-8, 11-14; Sal 116 (115):12-13, 15-16bc, 17-18; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Jn 13:1-15 Viernes: Is 52:13 -- 53:12; Sal 31 (30):2, 6, 12-13, 15-16, 17, 25; Heb 4:14-16; 5:7-9; Jn 18:1 -- 19:42 Sábado: a) Gn 1:1 -- 2:2 [1:1, 26-31a]; Sal 104 (103):1-2, 5-6, 10, 12, 13-14, 24, 35; o Sal 33 (32):4-7, 12-13, 20-22; b) Gn 22:1-18 [1-2, 9a, 10-13, 1518]; Sal 16 (15): 5, 8-11; c) Ex 14:15 -- 15:1; Ex 15:1-6, 17-18; d) Is 54:5-14; Sal 30 (29):2, 4-6, 11-13; e) Is 55:1 -11; Is 12:2-6; f) Bar 3:9-15, 32 -- 4:4; Sal 19 (18):8-11; g) Ez 36:16-17a, 18-28; Sal 42 (41):3, 5; 43:3-4 o Is 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6 o Sal 51 (50):12-15, 18-19; h) Rom 6:3-11; i) Sal 118 (117):1-2, 16-17, 22-23; Lc 24:1-12 Domingo: Hch 10:34a, 37-43; Sal 118 (117):1-2, 16-17, 22-23; Col 3:1-4 o 1 Cor 5:6b-8; Jn 20:1-9 o Lc 24:1-12 o (en Misas de la tarde o la noche) Lc 24:13-35 Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the reenactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect. Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday. The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war. A week later, Christ would rise from the dead on the first Easter. During Palm Sunday Mass, palms are distributed to parishioners who carry them in a ritual procession into church. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. These are then kept for the year. Because the palms are blessed, they may not be discarded as trash. Instead, they are appropriately gathered at the church and incinerated to create the ashes that will be used in the follow year's Ash Wednesday observance. The colors of the Mass on Palm Sunday are red and white, symbolizing the redemption in blood that Christ paid for the world. WHO IS UP FOR A MISSION TRIP???
