(II) (Simple Practices for a Renewed Eucharistic Spirituality) June 26, 2016 ¿Qué es la Hora Santa, Adoración Eucarística? (II) (Prácticas Sencillas para Renovar la Espiritualidad Eucarística) Beloved brothers and sisters, last week, we prayerfully began a spiritual journey aimed at deepening our love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. To begin this faith enriching and hope-uplifting journey, we acknowledged the many soul-searching questions and enduring affirmations that would constitute a spiritual landscape for our understanding of the presence of Jesus in the Sacrament of His body and blood, soul and divinity. Holy Hour or Eucharistic adoration is nothing more than being in the presence of Jesus, who at the Last Supper gave us himself so that we may have life in its fullness (John 10:10). He is ever present among us not only when we consume him in the Sacred Species: “The bread that I will give you is my flesh for the life of the world” (John 6:51), but also when we listen to his voice inviting us as he did to Peter, James, and John to keep watch with him for an hour (Mark 14: 33-34). At Holy Hour, we follow the Blessed Lord Jesus Christ in his sorrowful journey to Calvary. The Holy Hour prayers and watch, helps us to imitate the spirituality of Simon of Cyrene who accepted to carry the cross of Jesus (Mark 15: 21), thereby making ourselves his true disciples as Jesus indicated “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9: 23). At Holy Hour, we join the company of the women of Jerusalem who accompanied Jesus, offering him not silver or gold but affection and compassion (Luke 23: 27). The Eucharistic adoration is also a moment to offer our little voice against the killing of innocent person or innocent people like the wife of Pilate (Matthew 27:19). The humble solidarity with the suffering Jesus and the wounded Christ is one of the spiritual benefits of spending an hour before the Blessed Sacrament. At Holy Hour, we imitate Jesus who has great confidence and filial relationship with his Father when he said “Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabathani” (Matthew 27:46). At Holy Hour, we learn how to pray “Father into your hands, I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:46). The prayer of Jesus on the cross “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:35) is very instructive as we appreciate the relationship between prayer and forgiveness. Jesus indicated thus: “Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5: 23-24). In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus also invited us to forgive others when we come to Holy Hour: “When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions” (Mark 11: 25-26). Don’t relent to ask God also to forgive you of whatever may constitute an obstacle to your spiritual life and growth. By so doing, you deeply appreciate the biblical truth that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). A Simple Practice For the Week Beloved brothers and sisters, while last week reflection allowed us to ask questions about what is Holy Hour?, this week’s spiritual proceedings, is an invitation to biblically and experientially put the Holy Hour in the perspective of Jesus life and His passion. Kindly ask for the grace to love Jesus more this week and love others as Jesus loves them. Have a faith-nourishing week!!! Fr.
