In our thoughts and prayers:
Pray for the intentions of those in nursing facilities, the
homebound, the chronically ill, and those who are critically
ill.
Please remember in a special way the following parishioners
who have requested your prayers: Ralph Bailey, Judy Cordeiro, Lee Davis, Marjorie Dixon, Hattie Evans, Agnes Harris,
Bertha Kish, Erma Lawrence, Denise Lewis, Dorothy Lewis,
Billie Myers, Benjamin Raposa, and Terry Williams.
If you would like your name included in the Prayers for the
Sick in the Bulletin please contact our coordinators for
“Prayers for the Sick”, Gloria at 919-734-3810 or JoAnn at
919-736-7266.
Most parishioners realize that their Bishop’s Annual Appeal
gifts support the hungry, the homeless, the frail and the
sick. But your help goes beyond that. Every parishioner
benefits from the BAA. Every Catholic School and parish
faith formation program, like the one here in our parish, is
helped by your gift. Marriage preparation programs, seminarian and deacon formation as well as a host of other
spiritual and educational activities exist through God’s
grace and your generosity. If you have not participated
thus far, BAA pledge envelopes are available in the church
or you can donate online at BAA.DioceseOfRaleigh.org.
Thank you for your generosity.
Please also remember in your prayers all of our
parishioners who are in the military especially those
who are deployed.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Olive oil looms large in the vocabulary of baptism. There are
other oils in the pantry closet, from grapeseed to safflower
to canola, but only olives yield the proper meanings. Olives
don't just happen; they are cultivated, nurtured, pruned,
and fussed over; they are a sign of human and divine cooperation. Olives can thrive in poor soil, but they cannot survive without human ingenuity, planting shoots and pruning
branches. They can't be popped from a tree and munched
like apples: they are inedible without long curing; neither do
they yield their oil to hand pressure alone, but only to huge
stone mills. Abundant patience is needed as sediment sinks
to the bottom of storage barrels and pure oil rises to the
surface.
Olive oil is a byproduct of peace: war keeps harvesters,
planters, and pruners within city walls and turns millers into
soldiers. To obtain oil from olives you need vast measures of
hope, patience, faith, and ingenuity. Olive oil is a sign of
God's bounty and the way we human beings collaborate with
God to bring about impossibly wonderful results. It is creation at its finest. Some people give chocolate eggs for Easter; perhaps olive oil is a more appropriate gift!

Respect Life
Words of Wisdom on End of Life Issues
The Scriptures provide a sound foundation and a sure direction in helping us to respond to end-of-life questions by
offering three major points: 1) life is a basic, but not absolute, good: 2) we are to be stewards of life, but we don’t
have complete control and 3) we understand death in the
context of belief in new life.
In the creation story in Genesis, we hear of the goodness
of all creation (Gn.1:31) and in a special way, the sacredness of all human life, for we are created in God’s image
(1:27). Human life, then, possesses a dignity, rooted in
who we are, rather than in what we do. Life is holy, deserving of respect and reverence. We know from experience that life is the foundation for all other goods: friendship, love, prayer and all the other ways we enjoy and
serve God and neighbor.
Life, however, is not an absolute good. There is a greater
good: our relationship with God. We would not, for example, destroy our relationship with God through sin in order
to save our physical life. The powerful witness of martyrs—
and especially Jesus– testifies to this truth.
Stewardship, our second major point, must be distinguished from dominion. Stewardship implies that we have
the responsibility to care for something which is not totally
our own possession. Dominion, on the other hand, claims
an ultimate control. Life as we have already seen, is a gift
of God, to be respected and reverenced. Jesus’ whole life
modeled the idea of stewardship, creatively nourishing the
gift of life (see John 6:22-71).
The third point the Scriptures offer us is the conviction that
death marks the transformation to new and eternal life.
This belief does not deny the reality of death, along with its
suffering and separation. Yet life is changed, not ended.
Our belief in everlasting life is rooted, of course, in the
transforming experience of the resurrection of Jesus (see
Luke 24:1-53; John 20:1—21:25). We, too, trust in God’s
loving faithfulness.

February is African American History Month and during the month we have been highlighting some local,
Catholic African American History. As we come to the end of February we are going to take a look at an
array of questions and short answers about African or Black Catholics in history. Some from the Bible,
some well known and loved Saints, some African American Catholics that many of us have never heard of
and some Black Catholic Saints we may not be familiar with. We thank our African-American Catholics
for the rich cultural heritage they bring to our faith.
Who was the first African mentioned in the Gospels?
The first African in the New Testament was mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, Simon of Cyrene
(Matthew 27:30). Simon was pressed into service to carry the cross of Jesus. This event is highlighted in
the fifth station of the cross.
Who was the black “Wise Man” ?
The Magi, in the Infancy Narrative, refers to Melchior, whose blackness remains today in the Christmas
crib set.
St. Monica (feast day: August 27) was the Mother of St. Agustin. Monica was an African woman of great
faith who prayed for her son to turn against evil. Before her death, Monica had the great joy of knowing
that her son, Agustin, had come back to God and used his talents to build up Christ’s Church.
St. Augustine (feast day: August 28) was born in Tagaste, Africa and was the son of Saint Monica. At the
age of 33, he turned back to God and was baptized Catholic. St. Augustine was ordained a priest and later
Co-Bishop of Hippo. He led a holy and simple life, writing over 200 books, letters, and sermons. His writings are still read today.
Who was the first black Bishop in the United States?
Bishop James Healy, Bishop of Portland, Maine, in 1875.
Who was the first black President of Georgetown University?
Fr. Patrick Healy, SJ in 1874

mis tías me iban a dar si no me portaba bien.
