Letter from Our Pastor
FEAST OF PENTECOST 2013
FOR CHRIST FOREVER
VISITATIONS
My Campaign Pilgrimage was to Saint Mary’s Church in Fullerton. I was an Assistant
Pastor here when the Diocese of Orange was established on Tuesday, March 30,
1976. Last year marked the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Saint Mary’s. The
letter I sent for the occasion addresses the fond sentiments I carry within as I sit in
this place.
St Mary Centenary 2012
Congratulations to the Parishioners of St. Mary
I was playing John Denver songs as I drove a Toyota pickup from Temple City to
Fullerton in July 1975. When I drove in front of the school, I was greeted by Sister
Kathleen Marie who was the Principal of the school. I was looking forward to working with Jack Siebert and following in the footsteps of my second cousin James Augustine O ‘Gorman who was also a pastor at St. Mary’s.
In my assignment as Assistant Pastor to Fullerton, I was inspired by Father Siebert.
He had a reputation for being hospitable, supportive and loyal. He was very proud
of being a part of what he affectionately termed as “The Regiment”. Jack was a part
of a group of priests who were ordained for the Diocese of Springfield in Massachusetts. This notable group of priests distinguished themselves at all levels of church
life in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and later in the Diocese of Orange. They attended the Seminary of Saint Mary on Paca Street in Baltimore, the oldest seminary
in the United States.
Father Jack Hill also lived on the second floor of the rectory. He was blessed with
the power of self expression and had a reputation for being strict. Children understood him with ease. As he left Mass one Sunday he noticed a sad expression on
the face of a young girl. When he inquired the cause of her sorrow she responded
that they had not sung her favorite hymn. He sat beside her and sang the omitted
piece without the notes.
Saturday evening dinners were comprised of robust helpings of prime rib carved by
Father Siebert it was accompanied with German Riesling and followed by apple pie
with vanilla ice cream. The entertainment was provided by Lawrence Welk. Following the dinner I sometimes walked over to the baseball diamond.
I served at Saint Mary until 1978. When I look for an expression to describe the experience, I can say that I was honored to be among you.

PENTECOST
Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of
the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means "fiftieth day" and is celebrated fifty
days after Easter.
Red is the liturgical color for this day. Red recalls the
tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on
the first Pentecost. The color red also reminds us of the
blood of the martyrs. These are the believers of every
generation who by the power of the Holy Spirit hold
firm to the true faith even at the cost of their lives.

RICA
Pentecost Sunday is the last day that our Neophyte, Glory Curtis, and our newly initiated, Michelle Cullinan and Natasha Spadea-Anello will be in the RCIA process. They have faithfully attended mass and the
catechesis afterward for many months. They have received the sacraments at the Easter Vigil and been
present during the last period called Mystagogy. Here, they learned to live into the sacraments received
and to connect with the congregation in a substantial way.
Their faith journey has not ended with the concluding of the formal process of RCIA, but is just beginning for these newly initiated Catholics. They are looking forward to continuing their connection, here, at
St. Catherine’s and are excited to discover the ministry Jesus is calling them to enter.
We ask for your continued prayers for them as they begin a new path on their spiritual journey.
Blessings,
Donna Beam, RCIA Director

Saint Catherine of Siena Parish School News
Second Grade First Holy Communion
Written By: Isabella Freeman - Fifth Grade Student
As we all know, our First Holy Communion is very special and it just so happens that I was at one on
May 4, 2013. The second graders at Saint Catherine’s were receiving the Body and Blood of Christ for
the very first time. They all looked nervous and excited at the same time. I was an observer and older
sister to one of the second graders, Father O’Gorman was smiling from the altar and the boys and girls
looked so stylish decked out in their outfits. Their Communion banners that they had made looked
beautiful. Oh, and of course, Mrs. Dube, their teacher was very proud of her class. The Mass went
beautifully and we all had a good time outside during the reception. The First grade moms put together
refreshments. After the kids had their snacks, I thought it would be fun to interview a few of them.
Here are some Q and A’s
How do you feel about your First Holy Communion?
Tessa - excited, Katie - excited and nervous, Will and Ethan - great, Camden - awesome
How do you feel now that you can have Communion with the rest of your school and parish?
Tessa - happy, Katie - pretty fun, Will - fun, Ethan - great
I feel so blessed being able to have viewed and participated in this wonderful event by altar servings.
This event is very special and emotional. I really hope I get to witness this remarkable event again.
I hope this article reaches into your heart and reminds you about your First Holy Communion.

VISITAS

"The Regiment".
