Pulse arra Parramatta City Council’s community newsletter October – December 2013 Councillor Chedid re-elected Lord Mayor Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid with Deputy Lord Mayor, Cr Paul Garrard. New playground thrills big and small kids Thousands of local children and parents rolled up for the Family Fun Day on the banks of Parramatta River on Saturday 13 July to celebrate the official opening of Parramatta’s first multi–use playground. Local families that attended the event got to meet players from the Western Sydney Wanderers, take part in circus skills workshops, boat rides, obstacle courses, face painting and balloon twisting. They also got to try out the new playground. Located between Barry Wilde Bridge and Elizabeth Footbridge, the playground features rope climbing, a slippery dip, water play equipment and a fireman’s pole. A multi–purpose events space and new seating have also been installed so that parents can sit back and enjoy the water views and the Barry Wilde Bridge Fountain. Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John Chedid, said the new playground has an exciting range of features, challenges, themes and experiences. “The new playground won’t just entice little kids, I think we’ll see a lot of big kids using our new play equipment too,” Cr Chedid said. Liberal Councillor John Chedid has been re-elected to serve as Lord Mayor of Parramatta for another 12 months and will be aided by new Deputy Lord Mayor, Cr Paul Garrard. “I am honoured to once again be elected Lord Mayor of this great City of Parramatta. I will do my utmost to make the people of this City proud and deliver on the people’s vision for Parramatta,” Cr Chedid said. “My priorities for this term will be to build on the work I’ve been doing to activate key areas of the City including Church Street Mall and the River foreshore, promote healthy lifestyles, progress Parramatta Square and our Light Rail Network proposal, along with delivering a sport and recreation precinct for Western Sydney in Parramatta. Lord Mayor’s Message Urban design gurus, Ethan Kent and Professor Ed Blakely are helping the Council transform key areas of the City, including Parramatta Square, Church Street Mall and the River foreshore. In September, I announced an urban activation project for the City. This is part of our commitment to ensuring that key gateways to our City are active and vibrant spaces that attract residents, workers, visitors and business. We are working intensely with Mr Kent, Professor Blakely and the community to transform our key public spaces and build this City for the people. We’re honoured to have such internationally– renowned urban designers as part of my City Activations Committee. Mr Kent is most well–known for his work on Times Square and Professer Blakely was instrumental in rebuilding New Orleans after the devastation following Hurricane Katrina. Compost Revolution History Flashback: Parramatta’s Town Hall Parramatta’s Town Hall occupies the original site set aside by Governor Phillip for a “Large Town Hall”. The site is considered the oldest town hall site in Australia. In 1812, Governor Macquarie established a market place here, which operated up until 1878. In 1881, the Council Chambers was constructed and a town hall was completed a few years later. Prior to this, Parramatta’s Councillors met and conducted their business in Elder House; which is now the Woolpack Hotel. 10 Parra Pulse Council Services Learn about composting and worm farming through the online Compost Revolution program at compostrevolution.com.au/parramatta By taking part, you can buy a compost bin or worm farm at 50% off, including free delivery (conditions apply).
