New playground thrills
big and small kids
Thousands of local children and
parents rolled up for the Family Fun
Day on the banks of Parramatta River
on Saturday 13 July to celebrate the
official opening of Parramatta’s first
multi–use playground.
Local families that attended the
event got to meet players from the
Western Sydney Wanderers, take
part in circus skills workshops, boat
rides, obstacle courses, face painting
and balloon twisting.
They also got to try out the new
playground. Located between
Barry Wilde Bridge and Elizabeth
Footbridge, the playground features
rope climbing, a slippery dip, water
play equipment and a fireman’s pole.
A multi–purpose events space and
new seating have also been installed
so that parents can sit back and
enjoy the water views and the Barry
Wilde Bridge Fountain.
Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John
Chedid, said the new playground
has an exciting range of features,
challenges, themes and experiences.
“The new playground won’t just
entice little kids, I think we’ll see a
lot of big kids using our new play
equipment too,” Cr Chedid said.

Liberal Councillor John Chedid has been
re-elected to serve as Lord Mayor of
Parramatta for another 12 months and will
be aided by new Deputy Lord Mayor, Cr
Paul Garrard.
“I am honoured to once again be
elected Lord Mayor of this great City of
Parramatta. I will do my utmost to make
the people of this City proud and deliver
on the people’s vision for Parramatta,” Cr
Chedid said.
“My priorities for this term will be to build
on the work I’ve been doing to activate key
areas of the City including Church Street
Mall and the River foreshore, promote
healthy lifestyles, progress Parramatta
Square and our Light Rail Network
proposal, along with delivering a sport and
recreation precinct for Western Sydney in
Parramatta.
Cr Chedid was first elected to Parramatta
City Council in 2004 and previously held
the position of Lord Mayor in 2010-2011
and 2012-2013.
Lord Mayor’s
Message
Urban design gurus, Ethan Kent and
Professor Ed Blakely are helping the Council
transform key areas of the City, including
Parramatta Square, Church Street Mall and
the River foreshore.
In September, I announced an urban
activation project for the City.
This is part of our commitment to ensuring
that key gateways to our City are active and
vibrant spaces that attract residents, workers,
visitors and business. We are working
intensely with Mr Kent, Professor Blakely and
the community to transform our key public
spaces and build this City for the people.
We’re honoured to have such internationally–
renowned urban designers as part of my
City Activations Committee. Mr Kent is most
well–known for his work on Times Square
and Professer Blakely was instrumental in
rebuilding New Orleans after the devastation
following Hurricane Katrina.

Council, with Alfasi Property Developments have
lodged the development application (DA) for the
project, located at 153 Macquarie Street, with the
Joint Regional Planning Panel.
There will be plenty of delicious food outlets and a
spectacular fireworks display.
The DA plans are for a 15–level, 22000 square–
metre commercial tower to be developed by
Alfasi and a separate podium building to be
developed by Council for its new civic building.
In total, the development will have 7000 square
metres of public facilities, opening out onto the
public domain.
Enjoy the line up of entertainment, performances,
free children’s activities, colourful roving performers,
lighting of the Christmas tree and nativity scene.
Construction for this project will commence early
2014, and be completed by late 2015.
Light rail to deliver vital jobs for Western Sydney
Amid concerns of the lack of jobs in Western Sydney
and huge population growth, Council’s feasibility study
into a Light Rail Network for Western Sydney showed
that such a Network would support 180,000 jobs and
50,000 homes by 2031.
With a fleet of 21 light rail vehicles operating along 30
kilometres of track, Light Rail will be fast and frequent,
4
Parra Pulse
with services coming every 10 minutes and every five
minutes within Parramatta CBD.
The study also identified stops and routes along the
Network’s two lines – the Macquarie Park and Castle
Hill lines.
Council is now calling on the State and Federal
Governments to invest $20 million to take this project
to the next stage.
Foodies delight as Parramatta Lanes returns

Love where you live
tackles illegal dumping
Council is working hard to make sure that residents can
be proud of their street, neighbourhood and City.
Over August and September, we conducted a blitz on the
illegal dumping of rubbish in community spaces. During
the blitz, Council officers and Regional Illegal Dumping
squad investigators patrolled illegal dumping hotspots,
notifying residents of incidences and clearing properties.
The initiative saw the community get involved in
Love where you live Family Fun Days in Granville and
Constitution Hill.
Help us keep your street clean; remember to put your
rubbish out when Council’s free quarterly clean up comes
around. Visit parracity.nsw.gov.au/waste for the next

Connecting people and community
After a successful 12–month pilot, Council is launching
the Community Connectors Program, which provides
people with a disability, older people and carers with
one–on–one support to reconnect with their families
and communities.

Compost Revolution
History Flashback:
Parramatta’s Town Hall
Parramatta’s Town Hall occupies the
original site set aside by Governor
Phillip for a “Large Town Hall”.
The site is considered the oldest
town hall site in Australia. In 1812,
Governor Macquarie established a
market place here, which operated
up until 1878.
In 1881, the Council Chambers was
constructed and a town hall was
completed a few years later. Prior
to this, Parramatta’s Councillors
met and conducted their business
in Elder House; which is now the
Woolpack Hotel.
