Way to go CTC Sea Turtles! Students from both the Wharton and Dover campuses
participated in the 2013 Special Olympic Track and Field event at the Hackettstown
High School on Saturday! For the past few months, our Physical Education classes,
our Related Service Department, as well as our classroom teachers, started a schoolbased Special Olympics athletic program entitled “Get Into Our Game” with our
children! Get Into Our Game (GIOG) is a Special Olympics training program that
provides individuals of all ages and ability levels the chance to learn key sports skills
and participate in athletic competition within their school or community.
!
This program has not only helped to prepare our students for the Special Olympic
Games but has provided those who chose not to compete the chance to learn the
same skills. For those students who qualified at this weekend’s area game, they will
move on to the summer games this June! Congratulations to all of the students! A
very special thank you to all of the students who participated and to the staff and
parents who supported them at the event! We are so proud!

CTC PTO Tricky Tray
The PTO has been consistently working on the Tricky Tray effort since May 2012! It takes almost ONE year and
lots of helping hands to prepare for the event. Thanks to our CTC parents, staff, volunteers and the generous

guests that attended the event! A total of $6,000.00 was presented to the Related Services department on
Friday and will be applied toward Related Services Equipment and will have a positive impact on all our children!

A Peek Into the Classroom
Kelly’s Class
As part of our Community-Based Instruction Program,
Kelly's class planned, shopped for, prepared and enjoyed
a special taco lunch. !The students also made and
enjoyed green milkshakes in honor of St. Patrick's Day. !
Students discussed and planned what they would like to
prepare for lunch. !They made a list and walked to the
Dover Bravo food store to buy ingredients and comparison
shop. !After all ingredients were purchased, students
divided up tasks of washing and chopping vegetables,
browning beef, adding seasonings and cleaning up. !In
addition to planning and comparison-shopping, students
worked on sequencing skills by following a recipe,
modifying the recipe, turn taking, sharing and group work. !
Many students enjoyed second and third helpings of their
taco lunch and milkshakes. We found several members of
the group to be very at home in the kitchen!

Celebrate the Children and Profectum Come
Together For an Education Conference
The NJ Educator’s Conference will provide an overview of the latest
insights into!the unique profiles and experiences of children and young
adults on the autistic spectrum and other developmental and emotional
disorders. A comprehensive overview of the application of evidencedbased developmental practices in the classroom will be presented by
teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language
pathologists and mental health professionals, working in both private
and public school settings in the United States and abroad. Program
components that promote regulation, sensory motor development,
visual-spatial capacities, engagement, intentionality, problem solving,
symbolic and abstract thinking will be illustrated through classroom
video examples. Teachers and therapists use affective, emotionally
meaningful, experience-based activities tailored to the individual needs
of the students to maximize motivation, comprehension and retention of
knowledge. The principle of "discovery vs. teaching" is emphasized as
teachers and therapists promote thinking vs. memorization in the
classroom. Case studies will be used to demonstrate how children with
developmental challenges can build strong relationships and become
creative, global thinkers, who are prepared for the 21st century. The
integration of the use of technology to maximize participation and
communication will also be incorporated.

Why Are we Using Social Media and Why Should You Follow Us?
!Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States and now affects 1 in 50 children.!
More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than AIDS, Diabetes and Cancer combined.!
!
We are at an important time in the field of special needs intervention as many people are beginning to recognize the
need for approaches that look at the overall development of a child and target areas such as abstract thinking,
problem solving, independence, self-esteem, emotions, language, and social interactions in a natural and supportive
setting. At this time, the demand for this type of intervention is much greater than what clinicians and educators are
able to supply. Therefore, it is crucial that we share the amazing programs we have to offer and the “how to” with
others.!!
!
To fulfill our mission, we need your help and ask you to participate with us in the development of work, in the sharing
and building of materials, and in the structure and growth of our organizations: Celebrate the Children and Profectum.
Like us on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter and spread awareness of progressive programs that support families and
help individuals reach their highest potential and find success in society.
Please share our pages and posts with your family and friends! !
