The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and it was great to see so many of our past students in the musical. It certainly makes us proud to witness our past students flourishing at high school and getting involved in so many extra-curricular activities. The production was a credit to Galston High School and all of the students and staff involved. Congratulations Galston High School.” Galston Public School It was our absolute delight to attend a couple of the GHS musical performances last weekend. We were blown away by the commitment and talent of the staff who somehow managed to bring such a production together. “Thank you for your commitment to providing our kids with an opportunity that I’m sure they will never forget. experiencing the highs and lows of all the hours of rehearsals and then enjoying the many smiling faces as they performed, made me a very proud parent.” A Message from the Director.... For over two terms, Galston High School students have refined their singing, dancing and acting skills for the performances of High School Musical, which took place from July 22 – July 28. These students rehearsed three times a week, before and after school, and even gave up lunchtimes for extra practice! Since this was my first musical at Galston, I was amazed at not only how much talent there is in this school but also at how positively the students all work together! I’ve seen some of the older students helping out younger students, going through vocal parts, reciting lines and repeating dance moves to ensure that they all knew it inside out! Students always knew that there was something that needed doing and were constantly asking if they could help showing great leadership within this exceptional group. It has been so rewarding to watch students develop and grow through this experience! So many of them knew exactly how they wanted their characters to be, making directing easier than what I first imagined. What was really great was having teachers speak with me after the show saying that some of the students have never opened their mouths in class because they are too shy but there they were up on the stage dancing and singing with a microphone in their hands. I have been overwhelmed by the support of the Galston community who have all given such positive feedback. The primary schools thoroughly enjoyed it with some students turning up again to the evening performances. I would like to thank our friends who assisted with the production wherever possible. We were fortunate enough to get many volunteers. Firstly, I’d like to thank the band, backstage and lighting for being involved, especially Ms Vella and Mrs Enriquez for putting in all that time and effort. I’d also like to thank Mrs Pendlebury for creating our beautiful cheerleader, jock and brainiac costumes and for being at every dress rehearsal to make sure things ran smoothly! She has made the majority of costumes for the past five shows. Ms Duggan, thank you for your amazing artistic design making what I envisioned come alive! Thank you to the art faculty, particularly Mrs Coghlan, for all those hours painting sets! Mr Draper and Ms Thornthwaite have been immensely helpful with set and prop design, making clear that anything is possible with the stage. Thank you for building the set and all your advice. Thank you to Mrs Gray for your work as Front of House Manager and organising the ushers and Mrs Clarkson for the hours of work involved with selling the tickets. Ms Bacash, thank you for all your moral support and always assisting me with anything the show needed! It was great to have you join our team. Thank you Mrs Fuller for building confidence in our students and making them sound fabulous every night! Every rehearsal you conducted with such energy and enthusiasm! Finally, I’d like to thank Mrs Andrus for making this happen. You always made sure that everything was done on time and around me so that I could just focus on the creative aspects of the show. High School Musical has been nothing short of amazing and as Tim McCallum, the Director of the Dural Principal Network said, the show was “awesome, empowering and inspiring”. The Galston High School Music Department would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Galston District Eisteddfod Committee for their incredibly generous donation of $10,000. The Galston District Eisteddfod was a significant event in the life of our local community giving individuals and groups an opportunity to perform in a safe and caring environment for 20 years and we are proud to be associated with such an exciting event. $5,000 of this donation will be used for scholarships for students studying music at Galston High School who are members of the ensemble programs. The $5,000 balance remaining was used to update the sound systems in the two music classrooms with state of the art equipment. These sound systems are used daily throughout the year and for the HSC aural examinations and we thank the committee for giving us the ability to offer our senior students the best aural facilities possible. These will be thoroughly utilised and enjoyed for years to come. Student Medical Forms During Terms 3 & 4 we will be updating our medical records system to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on your child’s health. Shortly you will be receiving in the mail a copy of the new forms which you will need to fill out and return to the school by 30th August 2013. The good news is we have already started collecting some of the information, which means less for you to do. The new forms will help us collect your child’s important medical information and the introduction of new systems will mean we will be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child. UTS Science School’s Recommendation Scholarship... Tim Carter, one of our brilliant ex-students who completed Year 12 in 2012, was honoured when he received the UTS Science School’s Recommendation Scholarship. The Scholarship is awarded to those students enrolled at UTS Science recognising their interest in Science or Mathematics, and academic achievements at high school. Recipients are awarded with $2,000 annually for three years. Tim was nominated for the prize by his science teacher and recommended by the Principal. He received the award during the last holiday break. Congratulations Tim! Your hard work and efforts met success. English Report.... Term 3 is always an exciting time as we enter the final weeks of HSC preparation: Trials are over, final modules are being taught, revision of the whole course will soon commence. It is easy to fixate upon marks, outcomes and ranks in amongst all those things, but of course English is so much more than that. It is an opportunity to become an engaged citizen and critical thinker, an empathetic person and sophisticated communicator. In English this year, we have focused on contextualising English in the world outside of school and the HSC, to bring richness to students’ studies. To this end, Year 12 Standard English last week had an incursion with J.C. Burke, author of the HSC text The Story of Tom Brennan. Students had the opportunity to hear the author give her insights into the text as well as ask questions of her. So, too, Year 12 Advanced English had their own opportunity to meet one of their authors at the end of last term. In an excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum, students heard Mark Baker speak about his book, The Fiftieth Gate, giving a profound insight into the structuring and significance of the text. Alyssa Saunders has written a detailed account of the Advanced experience below. Next term, we are investigating an excursion to see a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It to support the new cohort of 2014 HSC students. The Fiftieth Gate/Mark Baker Excursion - Alyssa Saunders, Year 12 Advanced English During last term, the Advanced English students of Galston High were privileged to take part in an excursion to the Australian Jewish Museum in the city. Thanks to Miss Warby ‘pulling a few strings’, both Advanced classes were able to experience a fun whilst productive time. The reason for this excursion was to give a historical insight into the background of the novel ‘The 50th Gate’, which the students were going to have to study extensively this term in preparation for completing their HSC Exams in the coming months. (3 months people!!! >.<) During this excursion, we boarded a bus and travelled to the city, once we reached our destination entered into the lecture, held by one of the members of the museum, giving us details and aspects of WWII, particularly the affects it had on the Jewish community. We learnt about some of the horrible events that took place in the Holocaust, and that the word actually means ‘sacrifice by fire’. We were shown many aspects of the Jewish life in the museum, where there were so many interesting and educational artefacts, pictures, documents and visual digital aids that helped us understand the time and place in which our prescribed text was coming from. Some of the most interesting sights in the building were a sandstone wall carved with images of Jewish people, clothing and possessions of people from the war who had either survived and told their story, or the families who lost loved ones and felt their contribution to the museum was the best way to honour their memory. Other artefacts included newspaper articles form the era, and copious amounts of all kinds of pictures - family and friends, adults and children - all of them moments that captured something of the circumstances and events that surround a very dark chapter of human history. The most amazing and heartbreaking feature of the museum which held the attention of every student who entered was the eerie memorial created for the children that never survived the war. Many students - myself included walked into this section, where no one spoke, seeing the wall covered completely with the faces and names of as many of those children as possible and re-emerged with tears running down our faces. But in the middle of the memorial, which was what made it so amazing, was a suspended glass bowl, perfectly measured, to hold exactly 1.5 million drops of water, one for every child that died in the Holocaust. The entire museum experience was both confronting but illuminating, giving all the Advanced English students a deep and broad understanding of the impacts WWII and the Holocaust had on the Jewish community and its relevance to The Fiftieth Gate. English Report cont’d... We also were given the opportunity to listen to two speakers. The first speaker was an actual Holocaust survivor. He told us his story of how he and his family survived the dark days of WWII and he shared with us his experiences and memories. This was beneficial to the study of the Advanced students because, besides what we could see in the museum, we could hear the real story from a survivor and were able to ask him a variety of questions that helped us gain even more of an understanding towards this terms topic. The second speaker was the author of The Fiftieth Gate, Mark Baker. He started by giving us a brief overview of his novel, then background information into why he wrote the way his did and some of the key aspects of his text and the influences upon it. It was great to listen to him; we all found some form of enlightenment in the things he had to say and it helped adapt our mindset to better suit what the author was trying to portray. Being able to see and understand the underlying concepts held within the studied text enabled the Advanced class to improve their own knowledge base and work with this text with the least amount of confusion possible, as it is a very difficult text to comprehend at certain points. Overall, all the students who attended this event found so much valuable information that we could all later use in our classes, studies and HSC exams. Being able to go on this excursion gave us the foundation on which we could build our understanding. With the background knowledge in hand and the personal insight of Mark Baker himself, all the Advanced students have been able to use their new found knowledge to help themselves and their peers make it through our last ever module for HSC English. Mr Cosgrove, the teachers of both classes who made this happen and gave us the best possible start to this last term of work. So on behalf of all the student in the Advanced English course at Galston High, thank you for caring so much about your students and making English fun! The Story of Tom Brennan/J.C. Burke Excursion J.C. Burke, Year 12 Standard English On the 2nd of August students from year 12 Standard English had an incredible opportunity to meet the author of their HSC text ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’. The Author J.C Burke gave an insightful presentation where students learned of the process which she went through in creating her text as well as hearing her personal opinion on key points and techniques within the book that directly related to the concept studied by Year 12 of the world. Students where then allowed a time to ask questions which was a brilliant opportunity for students to gain further understanding and knowledge of the text and how it is linked to the year 12 concept. For me this was one of the most productive and interesting experiences from my time here at Galston High. The information gained was invaluable and allowed me to see the text in a new light through the experiences and examples given by J.C Burke. But for me the most valuable part of the whole experience was the opportunity to ask J.C Burke questions as it allowed me to gain answers to questions I never thought I would ever attain giving me a new perspective on the book. I strongly believe that the notes and experience gain from this event will give me an amazing advantage in my HSC and will be held A massive thanks should be given to Miss Warby and in my memory for some time to come. Ku-ring-gai Zone Cross Country Congratulations to the following cross country runners who placed in the top 8 at the Ku-ringgai Zone carnival on 20th May 2013 and will now progress to the Sydney North carnival on 13th June 2013 at Gosford. Danielle Cook 4th - 12 years girls Sara Mills 8th - 16 years girls Joshua Webb - bronze medal -12 years boys Callum Trethowan - silver medal -13 years boys Oliver Clarke - 4th - 14 years boys Matthew Jeffrey - 6th - 15 years boys Well done to all our representatives who competed under trying conditions due to recent heavy rain making the track particularly heavy. Their courageous performances enabled the following placings Matt-22nd, Sara-15th, Danielle-11th, Josh-7th, Callum5th and Oliver being our most successful runner on the day gaining a bronze medal. The latter three have now qualified for the All School State Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek on the 19th July 2013 where they will be competing against the best from both the state and private school systems. This event was also plagued by poor weather with torrential rain and blustery conditions making the course a genuine test of endurance. Despite this our boys performed up to their personal best with Oliver running first and placing 48th overall and 31st in the C.H.S system. Josh was next and he ran equally well to place 45th overall and 29th in the C.H.S system. Callum was last to compete and with his nerves escalating rapidly it was probably a great relief when the gun went off! His finish made a great finale to the day as he stormed home to place 19th and 11th in the C.H.S category. Considering most races had in excess of 100 competitors our boys did brilliantly and were rewarded with state medals in the following colours as part of successful Sydney North teams; Josh silver and Oliver and Callum gold! Student officiating Thank you to Alex Torville and Viraj Mudaliar, Harry Kraus, Ibi Sweedan, Matt Jeffrey, Anthony Lozina, Daniel Berry and Ahmed Sweedan for their outstanding efforts as referees and linesmen for the Small Schools Gala Day. A special mention for Ibi who has refereed a considerable number of Primary school State Knockout matches throughout the term due to his excellent level of control and fine judgement. Term 2 saw a large group of Galston High students volunteer to assist at the Dural Primary schools cross country carnival and the subsequent Beecroft Zone cross country event. In their role as officials they directed, encouraged and ensured the safety of all competitors with great responsibility bringing considerable credit back to the school in the process. Thanks to the following for their involvement. Congratulations to Isabella Psakis, Lucy Quaken, Laura Sawyer, Stella Wildey Year7, Taliah Clark, Tiarna Davies, Sally Parkinson Year 8 and Shivana Mudaliar Year 9 for volunteering to assist Dural P.S. at their Cross Country and the Beecroft Zone Carnival. The following students have also assisted to volunteer in the weekly PSSA competitions; Rachel Pernice, Georgia Randall-Quaid, Brooke McCarthy, Sarina Randoja, Imogen Florian, Monique Sproule, Eden Wildey, Kellie Ostavich, Ryan Hogan and Brad Fox. Paige Dowd, Ebony Norton, Amy Nealon, Tiarna Tadrosse, Katherine Kassapakis, Rachel Pernice, Tia Gamblin, Caitlin Hiku Year 7, Tiarna Davies Year 8 and Shivana Mudaliar and Emily McCauley Year 9. Shivana and Emily have provided invaluable service throughout the season while umpiring State Knockout matches for a number of the local primary schools with great authority and judgement. All School State Cross Country Report The 19th July was a cold winter morning at Eastern Creek Raceway to run in my 3km State Cross Country. race I felt as though I could hardly breathe. My legs were burning, but I was determined to run the best I could. The day was full of all sorts of weather, sun to start, followed by wind and rain. I quite enjoyed the race as it had some great long hard hills (which I love), as I run I could catch fellow competitors who found the hills tough going. My day started with walking the course early at 8.00am. It was extremely cold, but quite sunny at this time. The weather quickly changed many times during the day. It rained and was extremely cold at times. It was also windy most of the day as I waited nervously to run my race at 1.30pm. By the time I ran the rain had stopped but it had left the track extremely muddy and awful to run on. The gun went and all my nerves left me. I was finally running my race. My throat felt like I had had no water in weeks. Throughout the As I ran the last straight I was aching all over. But I wasn’t giving up. I ran the last 300m with a group of 4 finishing in a tied position of 18th out of 104 starers. It was a great day from start to finish, even with all my pre-race nerves! I’m now looking forward to hopefully being able to run again at the same carnival next year, and further improve on this year’s result. Callum Trethown - Year 7 Cross Country - Sydney North Team On Friday 19th of July 2013 I represented the Sydney North Team at the State Cross Country at Eastern Creek. At 12.45pm my race was called and I headed over the the marshalling area. At 1.00pm BANG! the race started. It was very muddy and all 94 runners were trying to find a comfortable spot and get a good position. As we came to the last 100m we were dragging our shoes full of mud over the finish line. As we passed the half way mark we were covered in mud. Slipping and sliding we were trying to keep our grip whilst running up and down heart breaking hills. As we were coming to the last 600m all our shoes were sopping wet with mud and sweat. What a great experience and what a nice group of guys in the Sydney North Team. When we finished the race we were all huffing and puffing as we struggled to walk over to the water stand. All of the Sydney North runners got together to discuss the race and the position we came. Josh Webb - Year 7 Prefects’ Report... It has come to that time of year again, where we begin the process of electing a new prefect body. What a busy few weeks this has been! A group of our Year 11 students are currently undergoing the selection process to be a part of the 2014 prefect body. This process has so far involved these students submitting a written profile. Those students were successful in the written application process, were then required to present a speech in front of staff, as well as the Year 10 and 11 student body. The successful ten will be announced next week, and from there the new team will undergo a leadership day, and a final interview to determine the roles of the senior executive (captains, vice captains, senior prefects, prefects). Although it is sad for us to think that our time is nearly up, we are all very excited to see what the new team will offer! By Stella McCoy and Harrison Brown - School Captains. P&C Working Bee - Sunday 15th September The P&C will be holding a Working Bee on Sunday 15th September 2013, from 8am til 12.30pm, to beautify our school grounds. We would love to see as many parents, carers and students as possible on the day, even if you can only spare an hour or so. Bring along your gardening gloves and any tools you may have so that we can prepare our beautiful gardens for the Spring and Summer months. Our Prefect Body, Student Leaders and Student Representative Council will also be present on the day and morning tea and lunch will be provided. Ensure you bring a hat, protective clothing and sunscreen. We are aiming to lay some more sandstone along the entrance pathway to the main quadrangle, complete the planting along this walkway, plant and landscape on either side of the common room, maintain Waddell Cottage and generally prune and tidy various gardens throughout the school. It is always a fun day and a great way to meet other families that are part of our wonderful school community. We look forward to seeing you. RSVP (for planning and catering purposes) to Merrin on 9651 2222 or email [email protected] Regional Orienteering Championships On Friday 2nd of August 13 keen athletes contested their initial orienteering Championships at St Ives showground in marvellous surroundings .Despite being new to the sport most acquitted themselves particularly well to negotiate the tricky courses with pleasing accuracy although a few just liked to run and explore regardless of where the map was directing them to go. Infact it was quite entertaining to watch the start where athletes were sent off at 1 minute intervals and they headed off in all directions despite being issued with the same course instructions. At the concluding presentations our team had placed 2nd in the schools championships which was a mighty effort on debut with a number of individuals gaining premier placings including 1st to Odesssa Jones,2nd to Callum Trethowan and Emily Byrne and 3rd to Ryan Hogan and Tye Davies.
