A very special welcome to the awardees, their families, friends or work colleagues. It has been a tradition each year that Galston Rotary Club honours and acknowledges members of our community, who have been nominated by the community, as an outstanding individual person in various categories of service and profession. They can be outstanding in their work place as an employee, as a businessperson, or in community services involvement, and they can be from any age group. Our awards tonight are to demonstrate publicly our appreciation to individual members of our community who have shown commitment and indeed excellence to their field of involvement. This recognition, we also believe, will encourage others in our community to follow their good example, strengthening and further developing Citations Lisa Dower - Apprentice/Trainee Award Ms Lisa Dower is a third year apprentice in hair and beauty at L’Yvonnes Hair Studio at Round Corner. Phoenix Dance Studio - Candice Bandiera - Small Business Award Candice Bandiera founded Phoenix Dance Studio in 2013 after recognising a need for such a business in the local Galson Community. Phoenix Dance Studio had its beginning in the Galston High School Dance Studio and at Parklea Public School. Within a year Candice had almost 100 dance students and by mid-2015, her business outgrew the Galston High premises requiring her to find an alternate larger studio. In 2016, Phoenix Dance Studios has over 250 dance students, employ nine teachers and operates out of four locations. Candice has built a successful small business through the implementation of her business plan, a disciplined approach to growth and the support of her partner and family. Candice is inspiring, instilling confidence, respect and a sense of responsibility in the young people under her tutelage who in turn admire her for her personal dance achievements, as a teacher and mentor. It is with great pleasure that Galston High School recommends Candice Bandiera’s Phoenix Dance Studio as an outstanding candidate for the Galston Rotary 2016 Small Business Award. and enhancing our wonderful local community. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all Galston Rotary members to congratulate all award recipients here tonight on their outstanding achievement. His attention to detail, love of learning and commitment to the achievement of his students, make him a highly valued member of staff at Galston High School. Mr Limbers is a very humble man who does not seek recognition for himself, but rather works quietly and professionally with individual students and their families to achieve optimum outcomes for success in school and ultimately life. Mr Limbers has been instrumental in the success of the SmartLink class at Galston High School, where Year 10 students, who wish to transition from school to work, participate in a modified curriculum for three days a week and engage in work experience and job readiness programs for two days per week. Mr Limbers’ carriage of this class led to 90% of students gaining an apprenticeship or fulltime employment at the end of 2015. The remaining 10% of students returned to Year 11 to continue their studies towards attaining the HSC and are doing well. When not in the classroom and at school, you will find Mr Limbers meeting with members of local businesses, parents or assisting at Middle Dural Public School where he volunteers his time assisting young students in achieving outcomes in the science curriculum. We anticipate that copies will be available early in Term three. I apologise for the delay, but unfortunately Ms Duggan’s departure for Masterchef in November 2015 has meant that we have had to train another staff member in the use of the specific computer program. When the Yearbook arrives, students who paid for the Yearbook in 2015 will be issued with their copy. Year 12 students from 2015 will have their copy posted home. Once again, thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter. Prefect Report... Being prefect for the past year has been a rewarding experience with many great opportunities and memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. Our group of 10 have worked together very well, with everyone playing their role and making us feel that we were always supported with no pressure to attempt to do everything. As a team, we have grown and learnt many new skills and personal characteristics that have benefited us and the school. We have all learnt to be better public speakers, communicate any issues with each other in a calm way and ultimately have become better leaders. It is these skills that we will take with us into the real world and be able to apply to whatever our future endeavours entail. As our time as Prefect draws to an end, it is time to turn a new page in the book of Galston High School and embrace the future leaders of the school. As prefect speeches were on Friday 3 June, our goal as prefects for now is to elect and support the best possible prefects for 2017, to ensure that the face of the school continues to represent the school well, whilst demonstrating the school's core values. We as a team, we are excited to see what the new prefects can bring to the table and we look forward to fulfilling our last duties as prefects in the best possible way.
