A loving tribute
in honor of our
Mothers
The Guidance Center would like to publicly honor all mothers and mother figures during the month of May.
Some people are blessed to have their mom with them today. Others who have lost their moms wish to have the
chance to be together again, even if only for a moment. We asked our friends and supporters to take the time to
share with us the name of that special women in their lives, whether to honor or to memorialize them. Here are the
names of the special women you have honored with your support.
With the help of good neighbors like you, we’ve been helping mothers and children in this community since
1958. We thank you for joining us to continue our efforts to serve the needs of all of the families in our community.

Third Annual Downriver DASH
5K Run/Walk and Tot Trot
The Guidance Center is committed to help
employees and clients live healthy, active lives.
From offering healthy choices in our vending
machines and fitness classes to partnering with
Oakwood Health System to provide Healthy Eating
Workshops at no cost, we care about wellness.
This spring the agency held its third annual
Downriver DASH 5K Run/Walk, and the event was
a great success. More than 300 runners/walkers
registered for the event and gathered to promote
physical fitness, show their support for families in
our community and raise funds for Guidance Center
programs.
Congratulations to Anthony
Lopetrone of Birmingham
who finished the event with the fastest time, and
many thanks to all sponsors, especially Behavioral
Health Professionals, Inc. (BHPi), Daly Merritt
Insurance, and Wayne County Community College
District–Downriver Campus for hosting the event.
The event began and ended at the Downriver
campus of Wayne County Community College
District. Participants ran up the sidewalk along
Northline Road and throughout Heritage Park in
Taylor.
The Downriver DASH also featured a Tot Trot for all
children 10 years old and younger.
And they’re off!

Michigan’s “Leave a Legacy” Month
Governor Rick Snyder has proclaimed May as “Leave a Legacy” month
in the State of Michigan to recognize the vital importance of charitable
giving in our state.
Have you ever thought about the impact that your donations have made
on the lives of thousands of individuals that The Guidance Center serves,
and what will happen when you are no longer here to make future
donations? While more than 80% of Southeast Michigan residents give to
charities each year, fewer than 6% of them leave a bequest through their
wills.
Please remember to make a difference in the years that follow by
including a charitable bequest to The Guidance Center in your will or estate.
You may also make a charitable gift that provides financial security for your future by setting up a charitable
remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity that will provide an immediate tax deduction and income to you and
will benefit The Guidance Center upon your death. Please contact Jean Wloszek, Fund Development Officer, at
734-785-7705 x7825 or [email protected] for more information on any of these programs.
Help Fill A Seat!
On March 1, 2013 automatic federal budget cuts, otherwise known as
“The Sequester,” went into effect. One of The Guidance Center’s largest
programs, Head Start, was significantly impacted. The agency had to make
hard choices, as $439,329 in funds are no longer available and had to be
cut from our budget. As a result, several Head Start classrooms will close
and 80 slots for children will disappear.
Instead of letting these seats sit empty, The Guidance Center has chosen
to take action with our Help Fill A Seat Project! The project goal is to
raise $150,000 to reinstate 34 of the 80 Head Start slots left empty by
sequestration. The project centers around actual preschool chairs taken
from the closed classrooms. The chairs have been handpainted by Head
Start children and are available for individuals, businesses, corporations,
organizations, clubs and other groups to purchase for $500. It will take ten
generous donors to reinstate one whole chair at a total cost of $5,000 per
chair. This money will pay for the chair to be filled for one whole school year.
With your help we can fill the classroom back up and continue to serve
preschool aged children in the community. To make your donation please
visit www.guidance-center.org/help-fill-a-seat. On behalf of the preschool
children you are helping with your contribution, thank you!
Klopcic Family Foundation funds a full-day
classroom at the Taylor Head Start
Recognizing the importance of Early Childhood Education and wishing to make an
impact on the future of children, the Klopcic Family Foundation has stepped up to be
a leader Downriver. During the 2013-2014 school year the foundation will sponsor a
classroom of Head Start children at our Taylor site and provide all funding necessary
to operate the classroom. Children need a quality pre-school education to position
them to enter kindergarten, ready to learn and firmly on track to succeed in school. We
thank the Klopcic Family for their dedication and commitment to make this happen.

Comcast Cares makes a
difference
The Guidance Center was fortunate to be selected
to participate in a two-day celebration of Comcast
Cares Day on April 23 and 24. Our Lincoln Park
and Flat Rock Head Start sites hosted more
than 500 volunteers who assisted with fun,
free events at each site. The event featured
volunteer projects that included planting seeds
for classrooms and writing thank you cards. The
youth who attended also received a t-shirt, crafts,
snacks, and prizes. Thank
you Comcast; we look
forward to partnering with
you again next year!
Giving youth a voice
In April, our Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center
teamed up with the Museum of Contemporary
Art - Detroit (MOCAD) to recognize Child Abuse
Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness
Month. Youth from across the city and metro area
competed in this open-themed poetry slam to
raise their voices about the themes and events
that have impacted
them most deeply
throughout their lives.
Our congratulations to all
of the young poets!

Mental health in the summer
For young people, the summer is a time of freedom from the structure of school, and a time looked
forward to all year long as one in which to make memories with friends.
However, summertime can also mean that certain mental health issues need more attention than
they do during the rest of the year. Our very own mental health care professionals share information
on the types of problems that could be present more frequently during the summer and ways these
issues can be prevented.
Tracy Wyman, Director of Children’s Behavioral Health Services at The Guidance Center, offers her
perspective on children’s mental health during the summer. “We like to think that summertime should
be a happy time,” Wyman says. “For kids it often means no homework and more freedom. But for
some children, summer can be a difficult time. Summer can bring more unstructured time, late bed
times and changes in routines.
“Sometimes, children who take medications during the school year ‘take a break’ during the summer
months. Changes in daily routines can be anxiety provoking for some kids,” continues Wyman. “It is
important to know what works best for your child during the summer months.”
Wyman suggests these tips to keep your child healthy and happy this summer:
• Maintain structured routines and bed times as much as possible.
• Keep a calendar with your child and plan weekly activities together.
• Make sure your children stay hydrated. Playing outdoors, summer heat and medication are all good
reasons to drink plenty of water and non-sugary beverages.
• Talk to your doctor about your child’s medication and summer schedules. Not all children benefit
from ‘taking a break’.
• Pay attention to excessive junk food and video gaming. Summer is a time for outdoor activities and
exercise.
• Maintain open conversations about your child’s moods and behavior. Many kids struggle with
anxiety and depression during the summer months.
By taking care to follow these tips and monitor your child’s behavior closely, everyone can benefit
from a healthy routine this summer!
