With all our love, YOUR CHILDREN, CYNTHIA, CHAUNCEY AND LYNN Clinical Depression is a serious, common, yet treatable medical condition in which a person feels very sad, helpless, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way. Spiritual support can be an important part of healing, but the care of a qualified mental health professional is essential. HYDEIA BROADBENT GABRIEL MALDONADO SAMANTHA GRANBERRY CLAUDIA J. SPEARS 7 THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT (1964) An Act To enforce the constitutional right to vote, to confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States to provide injunctive relief against discrimination in public accommodations, to authorize the Attorney General to institute suits to protect constitutional rights in public facilities and public education, to extend the Commission on Civil Rights, to prevent discrimination in federally assisted programs, to establish a Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity, and for other purposes. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That this Act may be cited as the "Civil Rights Act of 1964". ... Passed the House on February 10, 1964 (290–130) (full text available at http://www.ourdocuments.gov/doc.php?flash=true&doc=97&page=transcript) Passed the Senate on June 19, 1964 (73–27) with amendment House agreed to Senate amendment on July 2, 1964 (289–126) Signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964 ______________________________________________________ The bill was called for by President John F. Kennedy in his civil rights speech of June 11, 1963, in which he asked for legislation "giving all Americans the right to be served in facilities which are open to the public—hotels, restaurants, theaters, retail stores, and similar establishments,” as well as "greater protection for the right to vote". Kennedy delivered this speech following a series of protests from the African-American community, the most concurrent being the Birmingham campaign which concluded in May 1963. Emulating the Civil Rights Act of 1875, Kennedy's civil rights bill included provisions to ban discrimination in public accommodations, and to enable the U.S. Attorney General to join in lawsuits against state governments which operated segregated school systems, among other provisions. However, it did not include a number of provisions deemed essential by civil rights leaders including protection against police brutality, ending discrimination in private employment, or granting the Justice Department power to initiate desegregation or job discrimination lawsuits. Al Sharpton and Dominique DiPrima Introduction of Panelists Dominique DiPrima, Moderator Presentations, Conversation and Discussion Panelists Sending Forth 9 A DAY OF ACTION AIDS – A CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE OUR SPECIAL GUEST REV. AL SHARPTON Rev. Al Sharpton is the founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), a notfor-profit civil rights organization headquartered in Harlem, New York, with over sixty chapters nationwide including a Washington, DC Bureau and regional offices from coast to coast. As one of the nation’s most-renowned civil rights leaders, a March 2013 Zogby poll said one out of every four African-Americans say that Rev. Sharpton is the person that speaks most for them. Rev. Sharpton polled higher than any other civil rights or political leader in this public opinion survey. Rev. Al Sharpton has been praised by President Barack Obama as “the voice of the voiceless and a champion for the downtrodden,” and by former President George W. Bush who said that “Al cares just as much as I care about making sure every child learns to read, write, add and subtract.” Rev. Al Sharpton is currently the host of a daily television show on MSNBC that analyzes the top political and social news and features the country’s leading newsmakers. ”PoliticsNation” with Rev. Al Sharpton airs at 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The show is so popular it broke MSNBC ratings history with the highest viewership of any show at 6:00 p.m. since the network’s inception. Rev. Sharpton also hosts a nationally syndicated radio show “Keepin it Real” that is heard daily all over the country as well as two weekend radio shows that air in markets within the U.S. Reverend Al Sharpton, is the author of The Rejected Stone: Al Sharpton and the Path to American Leadership. In stores on October 8, 2013, the book will be published through a joint venture partnership between Cash Money Content, the publishing arm of premier record label Cash Money Records and Massenburg Media, in partnership with Atria/Simon & Schuster. In the book, Reverend Al intimately discusses his personal evolution from street activist, pulpit provocateur and civil rights leader, to the larger-than-life man he is today, while providing a series of essential life lessons that readers can adopt to transform their own lives. “From the Central Park Five to gay & lesbian rights to the immigration debates, I have prided myself on taking the side of the rejected people,” says Reverend Al Sharpton, “and so I decided to call this book The Rejected Stone,” from a passage of scripture which refers to a stone which was rejected by builders that, in the end, became the chief cornerstone. “In the end, that sums up my life’s journey and so many of my people,” says Reverend Al. National Action Network, under Rev. Sharpton’s leadership, has become the most active social justice organization in the country and President Obama echoed this at the 2013 NAN Keepers of the Dream Awards via video when he said: “Thank you Rev. Al and the National Action Network for the work you do to keep up the relentless march for change. When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was marching for change his vision was one of a country that lived up to the promise of its founding documents and today, 45-years to the day after Dr. King was struck down, it’s a vision the National Action Network has carried on as your own, becoming one of America’s most forceful voices in the fight for justice and equality.” (April 4, 2013) Whether it was his noteworthy Presidential run as a candidate for the Democratic Party in 2004, or his compelling speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, Reverend Sharpton has had an irrefutable impact on national politics and civil rights because of his strong commitment to equality and progressive politics. NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda that includes the fight for one standard of justice, decency and equal opportunities for all people regardless of race, religion, nationality or gender. 10 A DAY OF ACTION AIDS – A CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE TOWN HALL PARTICIPANTS DOMINIQUE DiPRIMA – Our Moderator Dominique DiPrima is host of the early morning talk radio show The Front Page on Los Angeles radio station KJLH 102.3-FM. HYDEIA BROADBENT At birth, Hydeia Broadbent was abandoned at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas where Patricia and Loren Broadbent adopted her as an infant. Although her HIV condition was congenital, she was not diagnosed as HIV-positive with advancement to AIDS until age three. The prognosis was that she would not live past the age of five. Now at the age of 28, Hydeia spends her time spreading the message of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, by: promoting abstinence, safe-sex practices (for people who choose to have sex), and the initiative “Let’s GET Real About SEX” “People think because I was born with HIV my story does not apply to them. Well this same disease I am living with is the same disease you can get if you don’t know the HIV status of the person you are considering becoming sexually active with beforehand, I ask people to use my testimony as a warning of what you don’t want to go through.” – Hydeia Broadbent Hydeia Broadbent began her debut as an HIV/AIDS activist and public speaker at six years old. By 12 years old, Hydeia appeared on many national television programs including Oprah, 20/20, Good Morning America, Weekly with Ed Gordon, and “A Conversation with Magic Johnson” on Nickelodeon. She has been featured in prominent publications to include; New York Times, Teen People, Essence, YM, Ebony , Health Quest, Sister to Sister, POZ, National Geographic, Real Health, Seventeen, and Heart & Soul. She also graced the cover of TV Guide. Hydeia has also taken part many of America’s talk radio programs including, The Michael Eric Dyson Show, Russ Parr Morning Show, and The Tom Joyner Morning Show. Over the next 10 years, Hydeia has become a notable speaker and guest panelist at many of America’s most respected educational institutions including Duke University, Morehouse School of Medicine, UCLA, USC, and Howard University. Hydeia has been a featured speaker for the International AIDS Conference in 2006. She also spoke at the 2007 Essence Music Festival as well as the 2007 AIDS Rally at the Potters House lead by Bishop TD Jakes, in Dallas, Texas. Not since Ryan White has a young person spoke out, on an international level, so passionately about having the virus. Hydeia is one of few young activists to follow in his footsteps and speak out on an international level about being effected by the HIV/AIDS virus. Broadbent is also considered a pioneer as the first African-American youth to speak up and speak out about the epidemic. Ebony Magazine named Hydeia one of the Most Influential 150 African Americans in 2008. She has been honored with an American Red Cross Spirit Award and an Essence Award. 11 In 2010 Hydeia was invited by the BET Networks Chairman/CEO Debra Lee to participate as a panelist in the First Annual Leading Women’s Defined Summit in Washington, DC. Hydeia also received an award for Health Education and Awareness from WEEN (Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network). Last year Broadbent had the honor of being selected by TheGrio.com a division of NBC News, TheRoot.com and Ebony Magazine as one of today’s Top 100 African American History Makers for Power 100 for 2011. Today, Hydeia is a distinguished international, public speaker and HIV/AIDS activist with a mission to educate people of all ages. She has an innate ability to bond with any audience. When addressing the public about the issues of HIV/AIDS, her primary goal is to provide a clear understanding of how to avoid at-risk behaviors through self-examination and informed decision-making. She succinctly stated “...with all that we know about the virus, it is clear to me that contracting HIV/AIDS today is a choice and we can’t allow anyone the power to make that choice for us!” SAMANTHA GRANBERRY Born and raised in Pasadena, California, Samantha Granberry has always had a heart for the community. CECIL “CHIP” MURRAY Dr. Murray’s drive and passion to serve was evident early in his life. As he matured, he served 10 years of active duty on flying status with the United States Air Force as a Jet Radar Intercept Officer (Air Defense Command), and a navigator (Air Transport Command). He was decorated with the Soldier’s Medal of Valor in 1958 following an aircraft explosion in his two-seated fighter. He retired as a reserve Major with the United States Air Force. Dr. Murray is a native Floridian with an undergraduate degree from Florida A&M University. He received his Doctorate in Religion from The School of Theology at Claremont and Doctor of Humane Letters from Hebrew Union College, Whittier College, University of Southern California, University of Judaism, and Antioch University. He has lectured and been adjunct professor at Iliff University, Seattle University, School of Theology Claremont, Fuller Seminary, and Northwest Theological Seminary. He has been featured in Time Magazine, Ebony Magazine, CNN, Network News, religious periodicals, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles 900, and other print and television media. The members of Dr. Murray’s family begin with his devoted wife over 50 years, the late Bermardine Murray, and their one son, Rev. Drew David Murray. In 1977, Dr. Murray was assigned to First African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest black church in Los Angeles. His new church family had 300 active members in 1977. They received his vision to set a fire in the hearts of his members to be a church that extends beyond the walls. The fire and spirit of love spread, and the congregation grew to 17,300 members. The ministry of the church fills the sanctuary with an awe-inspiring spiritual worship service and spills beyond the walls of the church with some 40 task forces that include health, substance abuse, homelessness, emergency food and clothing, general and specialized housing, tutoring, entrepreneurial training, employment services and the like. The vision of the First AME is a manifestation of Rev. Murray’s 27 years of ministry and leadership to carry out God’s work. Following mandatory retirement at age 75 as required by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, in 2004 Chip Murray was brought on board the following year at the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California, holding the Tansey Chair in Christian Ethics as adjunct professor. In addition to lectures and teaching engagements, he serves as co-founder of the Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement, an outreach program to underserved communities in procuring jobs, forming and operating 501(c)(3) corporations, church management, obtaining grant funding, and generally becoming empowered to lift their communities. Graduates of the Faith Leaders Institute receive a certificate of course completion from USC. Each then undertakes an outreach program designed to serve the selected area of outreach and uplift, drawing heavily upon resources from the faith-based community, the colleges at USC, the grant funding in response to their proposals to corporations and endowment programs. As of this date, over 400 pastors and non-profit executives have completed training and are in the database, each having been monitored for six months by mentors at the Cecil Murray Center, assuring that the selected project succeeds. Her passion and commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS is the legacy that she is proud to champion in memory of her beloved Kevin, who was an activist like no other for the rights of others in any cause that sought to protect, secure and uphold dignity and respect for his fellow brothers and sisters. “Mother Spears,” as she is affectionately known by many, is grateful for the opportunity to serve her Holman congregation and community on healthy living in general, and HIV / AIDS in particular. 13 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS REFLECTING ON "THE LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL" BY DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. Challenged by irrelevancy and complacency, today's "Call to Action" is a provocation to the ineffectual voice and, at times, appalling silence of the church as arch-defender of new and improved forms of discrimination and marginalization. We sound the alarm on communities of faith that too often chooses to merely be a thermometer that record the ideas and principles of popular opinion, instead of being a courageous thermostat that intentionally seek to transform the mores of an unjust and unfair society. We press on the church to reposition faith towards catalytic relevancy, starting with being cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities linked in an inescapable network of mutuality, and connected in a single garment of destiny. With injustice anywhere threatening justice everywhere, and the evidence being clear that whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly, the call is for consistent prophetic and progressive action. Thank you for your commitment in realizing God's beloved community, one action at a time!!! – Rev. SERMON NOTES “A DAY OF ACTION” Rev. Al Sharpton In the New Testament, as told in Luke, Jesus is rejected by the people after he reads scripture. They question the authenticity of the scripture and criticize him. He is described as the rejected “cornerstone.” There has been a lot of talk about how I have become something of a different individual. People have described me as going through this major transformation. But what’s really happened is the country has changed. So, in this book, I examine how an individual deals with being a reject and then being accepted. Everybody’s been a reject. Rev. Al Sharpton Speaking on his book, THE REJECTED STONE L KING AHEAD ____________________________________________________________________________________________ JAZZ FOR THE SOUL ____________________________________________________________________________________________ “The Spiritual According to Jazz” Thursday, February 27th ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 6:30 PM ____________________________________________________________________________________________ WHAT CHARIOT YOU GETTING ON?
