Donations
The club and individual donations allowed the group to donate $3100 to Casa Maria,
which has been in existence since 1981. Their soup kitchen is open daily except
Thanksgiving and Christmas, and exists on private donations. They provide meals
daily to those in need, as well as helping with different emergency needs of people
in the community.

Opening 1NT with a singleton: It’s officially legal
The ACBL Board of Directors removed a legal gray area surrounding semi-balanced
notrump openers when it approved a change to the definition of a notrump opening
in the General Convention Chart. The change allows players to open 1NT with hands
that include a singleton ace, king or queen, as long as they do not also contain a
doubleton.
Here is the new definition, effective Aug. 1:
“A notrump opening or overcall is natural if, by agreement, it contains no void, at
most one singleton which must be the A, K or Q and no more than two doubletons.
If the hand contains a singleton, it may have no doubleton.”
This includes hand patterns such as 5-4-3-1, 6-3-3-1 and 4-4-4-1, in addition to
those that were previously allowed, such as 4-3-3-3, 5-3-3-2 and 5-4-2-2.
The change was recommended by the Competitions and Conventions Committee, a
group of players appointed by the Board, in an effort to bring regulations in line with
popular and expert practice, said ACBL Field Manager Sol Weinstein, who supervises
tournament directors.
Before, opening notrump with a singleton was considered a psych. It was legal to
do, but players could not have an agreement to open such hands 1NT or 2NT. The
lack of clarity was a thorny issue for directors.
“Many players were doing it anyway,” Weinstein said, particularly when a different
opening would create a problematic rebid. “They decided it’s not right to have a rule
that’s contrary to the way bridge is being played.” The idea of expanding the definition has been discussed for years within the committee, but previous proposals have
failed because they lacked the simplicity of the new definition.
“The Laws don’t allow you to limit bridge judgment,” Weinstein explained.
“Regulations have to conform to the Laws.”
The new definition prohibits opening notrump with more shapely hands, such as 5-5
-2-1, 6-4-2-1 or 7-22-2. “All of this has to do with your agreements,” Weinstein
noted. “That doesn’t prohibit an out-andout psych, but you can’t keep doing that or
it becomes an agreement, and an illegal one at that.”
The change does not impact the one allowable exception of a partnership agreement
where 1NT is treated as a 100% forcing opening bid (and not considered “natural”
with any distribution). The use of such an unbalanced, non-natural 1NT opening
must be alerted.

Unit 356 Board of Directors Meeting
7-10-2016
Las Candelas Bridge Club
Members present were Adair Karlin, Barry Abrahams, Jud Jones, Steve Reynolds,
Joan Merrill, Ann Shaylor, Mindy Hawkins, Cindy Shoemaker, Anne Hinge, Betsy
O'Dell and D17 Representative Darwin Afdahl.
The minutes from the May meeting were approved. There were no comments
about the treasurer report from the board. Darwin stated that the next D17 meeting would be in Phoenix.
Membership in the unit is up 51 member from the same time last year.
Commercial printing - The price for 2 sided 8x10 is about $329.00. Recommendations for future flyers are needed.
There were 8 full tables at the last unit game. Verbal communications, Streams,
and e-mail blasts can be credited for this. The NLM people often stay for Jared's
and Barbara's classes.
Fees - Tucson has a very cheap card fee. The fee is now $7.00. There was discussion about a $6.00 unit game fee. It will be discussed after the first of the year.
NLM fees are $3.00.
ACBL District 17 board election - We will send in as a unit. Barry will take care of
the submittal.
The September unit game will be in Catalina. There will be a 30 minute training
session on knockouts. The purpose is to encourage NLM to play at the NLM regional and the open regional.
The unit records need consolidation in one place possibly a trailer.
Adobe Bridge situation
a. Their lease is up and options need to be sorted out.
b. Barry wanted the board's view on a short term cash advance to Adobe.
There were mixed opinions.
Regional prizes - There are some T-shirts in the trailer to sell. $15.00 for each shirt
will make money. Prizes should be a different color than the ones being sold. Further discussion needs to be done to finalize decision.
NLM regional
a. Speakers - Thursday - Barbara Rosenthal, Friday - Ken Badertscher,
Saturday ACBL president Ken Monzingo
b. Everything is completed including the patch.
November Sectional
a. The flyers are done.
b. Ann Shaylor has speakers but needs to list their topics.
Eric Swanson, Ken Grafton, Jared Boulds
7
c. Color coded events on flyers are easier to read. This is done for regionals
but not sectionals.
d. Caddies - Flyers will be put up in colleges and an article in the Kibuttzer
to recruit caddies.
Regional at Radisson
a. 1600 to 1700 tables are average
b. If there are 1900 tables, extra space will be needed.
Other Events
a. The Holiday flyer is done.
b. Venues through April for events are set up.
c. 2017 Member Appreciation game is set for Skyline Country Club.
d. The mentoring program is continuing at Adobe. Unit mentoring programs
depend on the Adobe situation.
e. A decision must be made by August for Senior Olympics. Al Spaet should
be asked if Sunni's building is not available
Board Members
a. Barry, Ken, Ann, Adair and Steve are up for re-election. They were asked if
they wanted to continue as a board member. Ken was not at the meet
ing. Barry said probably unless he was on the Adobe board. Steve, Ann
and Adair said yes.
b. Will Cindy be a board member or I/N representative?
c. There is a nominating committee meeting in August.
Respectfully submitted by Betsy O'Dell

BRIDGE BITES #63
THIRD TIME LUCKY
Brian Gunnell
Here is a deal which looks pretty simple, but don’t be fooled! We can tell you now that none of the suits
breaks impolitely, and yet making 10 tricks may not be as easy as it at first appears.

West led a Spade and Declarer saw an easy route to 10
tricks. He’d get two Spade ruffs in Dummy, added to which
there would be three more trump tricks, the ♠A and four
Clubs. Seems too easy, what’s the catch?
Declarer

The play went: ♠A, Spade ruff, cross to the ♣K, Spade ruff, Heart to East’s Ace, Club won by Dummy, after
which Dummy’s last trump was cashed. “Oops!” said Declarer. There was still an enemy trump out, but Declarer could not get back to hand to draw it. Eventually he ran into a Club ruff and that was down one.
So, going after the two Spade ruffs in Dummy doesn’t work. How about drawing trumps immediately, planning
for just one Spade ruff in Dummy and relying on the Diamonds for a 10 th trick?
Nope! The play goes: ♠A, ♥K is ducked by East (good play!), ♥A wins the next trick, Spade return is ruffed on
the board. It’s another “Oops!” moment. Now the defense is a step ahead of Declarer, and will score a Spade
trick before Declarer can set up his Diamond winner.
What is the winning line of play that will avoid a third “Oops!”?
To avoid that third “Oops!” Declarer must go to work on the Diamonds at Trick 2. This subtle change in timing
leaves the defense with no winning option, and now it is Declarer who is one step ahead of the game. Here is
the full deal:

The first chapter in books on card play invariably says “Draw the defenders’ trumps before they start ruffing
your winners”, and then the remaining chapters are dedicated to explaining the numerous exceptions to this
rule. Setting up side-suit tricks early is a common such exception.
