Jussieu 16M Atrium Address Place Jussieu 2 75005 Paris France http://www.epajussieu.fr/ photo: Luc Boegly . Jussieu Campus consists out of a regular grid of 6-floor wings and is generally decried as an architectural failure. The hollow space under the buildings enables wind to build up its force, the regular grid plan is confusing and polluted with asbestos. It has increasingly degraded, leaving its facade covered in graffiti. The new 16M building extends and completes the grid plan that architect Edouard Albert designed in the 60s; based on the existing system, but at the same time deforms it: where Albert laid out a single patio, Périphériques planned two. The façades are glazed on the same pattern as Albert’s existing building. But the glass metal skin composed of ten types of panels perforated with circular holes of different sizes give the façades complex and variable depth. At ground floor, the existing slab on which the university buildings are built folds up in an origami-like orange ramp to even up the levels in a fluid movement. . Project is public! . . . . . Mitterrand sprinkled Paris with bold landmarks, from Pei's glass pyramid at the Louvre to Dominique Perrault's National Library. Georges Pompidou built the colorful machinelike museum. Like its predecessors, Chirac’s new Quai Branly has stirred considerable resentment. Defiant, mysterious and wildly eccentric, it is not an easy building to love. Its jumble of different structures, set in a lush green garden on the bank of the Seine in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, hardly conforms to notions of Parisian monumental elegance. Yet, Jean Nouvel's design creates a kaleidoscopic montage of urban impressions. And once you give yourself over to the experience, you may find it the greatest monument to French popular culture since the Pompidou. The building combines angular glass walls with futuristic cubes of bright color and outside, a green wall of thick vegetation, suggestive of a forest or a jungle. An enormous curved glass wall shields the garden from cars roaring by. An urban oasis. photo: © musée du quai Branly - Nicolas Borel . Project is public! . . . . . . Arab World Institute Address Rue des Fosses-Saint-Bernard 1 75005 Paris France http://www.imarabe.org . In 1980, 18 Arab countries concluded an agreement with France to establish the AWI to spread knowledge and research the Arab World’s language, and its cultural and spiritual values, reflecting the opinion, that the Arab world - its civilization and values, its past and future - needs to be better known and understood in the West. It supplies cultural information in a wide range of media: libraries, electronic databanks, a conventional, glass-case museum, audio-visual displays, and an outreach program of touring exhibits and performances as well. This is not an Arab building, but an occidental one, it’s not pastiche, like the Paris Mosque, but modern and from an urban point of view. The Institute is a hinge between 2 cultures and histories. Certain symbolic items like the “moucharabiehs” whose polygons of varying shapes and sizes, create a geometric effect recalling the Alhambra. It AWI has been conceived equally by Jean Nouvel, Architecture-Studio, Pierre Soria and Gilbert Lezenes. photo: IMA . Project is public! . . . . . . . . A-Poc Boutique Address Rue des Francs Bourgeois 47 75004 Paris France http://www.isseymiyake.co.jp/ . This Issey Miyake shop was conceived of as a support: to carry the clothes and accessories of a collection that changes and evolves every 6 months. The framework is a corian structure that runs along walls and ceiling. It is composed of 3 horizontal bars, a traditional one at the height of a clothes rail, one higher and one lower. The ceiling is criss-crossed with bars that primarily serve to carry the clothes on hangers. Then, a series of accessories, which are also placed on the framework, allows you to arrange other elements in a different way: big vertical metal plaques act as boards to which the clothes have been attached with magnets; horizontal plates hold clothes laid out flat, and also shoes or bags. The curtains of the changing rooms are made up of a set of upholstered strips. They make the space of the changing rooms gentler, almost sound-proofed. This was the first interior commission, until then Bouroullec’s work had been restricted to furniture and objects. photo: Morgane Le Gall . Project is public! . . . . . Tower Flower Address Rue Albert Roussel 23 75017 Paris France . "Flower Tower" is a bit of a misnomer since bamboo isn't a regularly flowering plant (bamboo generally dies after flowering, and most species are long lived, so you connect the dots), but it sounds better than "Bamboo Building" I guess. This Parisian apartment block features a green facade of bamboo planted in 380 large concrete pots embedded in the balconies. . Project is not public! . . . . . Bibliothèque Nationale François Mitterand Address Quai François-Mauriac 1 75706 Paris France http://www.bnf.fr/ . On 14 July 1988, François Mitterrand announced the construction and the expansion of one of the largest and most modern libraries in the world, intended to cover all fields of knowledge, and designed to be accessible to all, using the most modern data transfer technologies, which could be consulted from a distance, and which would collaborate with other European libraries. In July 1989, the services of the architectural firm of Dominique Perrault were retained. After the move of the major collections from the rue de Richelieu, the National Library of France opened to the public on 20 December 1996. It contains more than ten million volumes. The new complex consists of a large esplanade and four identical L-shaped towers, whose form recalls the shape of an open book. This architecture was controversial; many considered it too costly, and not very suitable to the storage of book collections. Indeed, wooden boards had to be set up at the windows to protect the books from the light. photo: Jeroen Apers . Project is public! . . . . . . . Villa la Roche Address Square du Docteur-Blanche 10 75016 Paris France http://www.fondationlecorbusier.asso.fr/ . Villa La Roche was built as a home for Raoul La Roche, a Swiss banker and collector of avant-garde art. Among other things, the house would serve as a private gallery to display La Roche's extensive art collection. Built in a private Paris courtyard, the house had major constraints imposed by the site and its zoning restrictions, including a north orientation, existing trees and height and boundary limitations. Inside the building, to display the art, an ‘architectural promenade’ was made, a theme inspired by Le Corbusier's visit to the Acropolis in 1911 and repeated most strikingly in his Carpenter centre for the Visual Arts nearly forty years later. The promenade goes up and down staircases, leads you through tight spaces, in-between balconies, open surveys, down ramps and into a beautifully lit library. This idea of a spatial sequence was re-invented by many modern architects, after Le Corbusier. . Project is public! . Maison de Verre Address Rue Saint-Guillaume 31 75007 Paris France . Interior designer Chareau joined efforts with licensed architect Bernard Bijvoet to design what would be part gynological clinic for Dr. Dalsace and part private residence for the doctor and his wife, Annie. The remarkable Maison de Verre (glass house) was inserted into an existing building and is one of the greatest houses of the International Style, adding materials the movement had never used before in such an extent to create a work of architectural genius -- a structure that is fully functional and fully aesthetic in its simplicity. The steel frame allowed for complete freedom of internal space. The glass block wall itself, is able to stand alone without a heavy frame breaking its pattern. Ventilation through the glass block wall is provided by a series of movable traps. A not-so-complicated weight and pulley system opens the window panels, allowing for natural ventilation. This unique system causes a minimum of visual impact on the glass facade of the structure. photo: Michael Noordam . Project is public! . . . . . . . . House and studio Ozenfant Address Avenue Reille 53 75014 Paris France . The house and studio in Paris for Le Corbusier's friend the painter Ozenfant is an early example of 'minimal' architecture, a prototype of the Domino house and a manifestation of some of the principles which Le Corbusier was to set out in his famous 'five points.' It possessed a geometrical clarity inside and out which has since been lost with the elimination of the north-light roof and its replacement by a flat one. . Project is not public! . Gymnasium Maurice Berlemont Address Rue de l'Orillon 22 75011 Paris France http://www.mairie11.paris.fr/ . For all inhabitants and young people in the neighborhood of "Fontaine Au Roi - Orillon" architect Emmanuel Saadi was commissioned with the design of the new gymnasium Maurice Berlemont. The complex is open not only during school time, but also after school, for the young to go play and encourage social integration. Before it was built, there was a playground on the site. In order to reduce noise levels, the playground was converted into a gymnasium with walls made of glass bricks, allowing the inside to be seen from the outside and vice-versa. It had to be a very public, open and free building. The project was financed with public funds of the city of Paris. A questionnaire was made to analyze the inhabitants’ most prominent wishes. It took three years of dialogue and reflection between the local politicians of the 11e quarter and the department of Youth and Sports of the municipality of Paris, before a decision was made and start this project. photo: Edou Bonnema . Hotel Fouquet's Barrière Address Avenue George V 46 75008 Paris France http://www.fouquets-barriere.com/ . Located in the heart of Paris, this 80-room luxury hotel is designed with a new moulded façade as replica of a Haussmann façade. A typical Hausmann building on the Champs Elysess was copied so the new hotel would seamlessly fit into its surroundings. The corner addition connects to its neighbours, but the ‘existing’ façade does not relate to its interior, the architect punched new wholes into the concrete where necessary. The combination of this copied, moulded concrete façade with pierced and stuck-on modern additions, make a very intriguing image. photo: Edou Bonnema . Project is public! . . . . . Plaine Saint Denis Police Station Address Rue du Landy 39 92110 Paris France . Saint Denis, a former industrial area located in the northern suburbs of Paris, suffers from public safety problems. This has led to a new kind of police station designed to meet local conditions. X-TU's police station is the outcome of a rigorous analysis of issues like security, communications and circulation. This resulted in 2 completely segregated entrances. The first is intended for visitors, who enter a lobby through a monitored security entrance. The second entrance is reserved for police personnel, and provides access through a secured courtyard into a second lobby that communicates with all floors and internal services. While its functionality is beyond reproach, the St. Denis police station also offers an interesting, sculptural silhouette formed by a set of interlocking volumes. Their sides are in black glazed concrete or in serigraphed white glass, the pattern density of which provides opacity or transparency depending on the degree of confidentiality required. photo: Jean Marie Monthiers . Following in the footsteps of founder André Citroën, who regarded architecture as an important part of his marketing strategy, architect Manuelle Gautrand built the company the ultimate showroom on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Gautrand used the glass of the faceted window as a symbol of the marque's creativity and innovativeness. She fused the corporate logo with the façade structure: the frame is made up of inverted V-shapes. Centre Georges Pompidou Address Place Georges Pompidou 1 75191 Paris France http://www.centrepompidou.fr . Centre Georges Pompidou is a complex in the Beaubourg area of the IVe arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles and the Marais. It houses the Bibliothèque publique d'information, a public library, the Musée National d'Art Moderne, and IRCAM, a centre for music and acoustic research. The building was designed by the architects Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Sue Rogers and engineers Peter Rice and Edmund Happold, whose design was not popular at first. However, under the guidance of its first director, Pontus Hultén, it quickly became a noted attraction in Paris. The Pompidou 'revolutionized museums,' the Pritzker jury said, 'transforming what had once been elite monuments into popular places of social and cultural exchange, woven into the heart of the city. Ministère de la Culture Address Rue Saint-Honoré 182 75001 Paris France http://www.culture.gouv.fr/ . The aim of this project was to regroup on a single site all the services of the Ministry of Culture, previously dispersed over 17 different locations around the city. Architect Francis Soler resolved the major constraints -disparity in dates and indifferent architectural style of the two existing buildings- into elements of unity and identity. This unity is omnipresent in the internal space planning: the two buildings have been remodelled in their substance to require the obtained density, optimize work spaces and interconnect the different floor levels. The other unifying element is purely architectural. In the manner of Christo, Soler has wrapped the old buildings, walls and roof included, in a continuous organic-weave mesh of steel lace. Without entirely effacing underlying differences, this stainless steel veil imparts continuity to the disparate volumes. It hangs like a loose net detached from the elevations, its appearance changing in phase with the sun, shadows, day and night. photo: Georges Fessy . Public access unknown! . Fondation Cartier Address Boulevard Raspail 261 75014 Paris France http://fondation.cartier.com/ . In 1994, the Fondation Cartier moved, exchanging Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles for the boulevard Raspail in the heart of Paris. Its new premises were designed by Jean Nouvel, an architect celebrated in France and throughout the world for the unique way in which he “dematerializes” architectural structure. He also famously designed the Institut du Monde Arabe (1987) and the Musée du Quai Branly (2006), both in Paris. For the external façade, he designed a glass screen running parallel to the boulevard Raspail that would prolong the boulevard’s perspective. Behind this transparent wall, a cedar of Lebanon planted by Chateaubriand in 1823 emerges from a monumental flower pot clad with multi-colored mosaics, a witty creation by the Italian designer Alessandro Mendini. Above the entrance to the building rises a wall of plants commissioned in 1998 from Patrick Blanc, a specialist in tropical botany and the creator of this innovative design. photo: Patrick Gries . In 2000, Italian fashion house Prada rented the building to present its collection. Niemeyer has created a beautiful building. He wanted a simple construction without ornament. The walls of the Place du Colonel Fabien have kept the marks of the wooden boards used to build them. Oscar Niemeyer said the headquarters was ''a piece of work which will constitute in this city, I am sure, an example of contemporary architecture, and even, permit me to say, a tourist attraction.'' The main conference room with metal slates hanging vertically on the walls is situated below ground level and has Niemeyer desks and chairs. The central courtyard of the museum, on the axis of the Champs-Élysées, is occupied by the Louvre Pyramid, which serves as the main entrance to the museum. This leads into a new central circulation space for the main wings of the galleries and as a visual centre point for the vast sprawling exterior. The challenge for celebrity architect I.M. Pei was to create a design that would accomplish its task while at the same time allow the Louvre Museum to remain the focus of attention. The solution he came up with was a series of glass pyramids. The structures jut into the sky to draw the gaze of tourists and let them know this is where they should be. But at the same time it allows both them and the Parisians the ability to see through it and revel in the elder architectural masterpiece. The city is now building better social architecture, aiming to reverse social housing’s negative stigma. One of these projects is an unusual concrete building, built for the Société Anonyme d’Economie Mixte Immobilière Interdépartementale in the formerly industrial Masséna area by Beckmann-N’Thépé. Coeur Défense Address Voie des Bâtisseurs 92044 Paris France . This is the biggest corporate project built in Europe in recent decades: 350.000 m2 of floor space. It stands in the 'heart' of La Défense, beside the historic east-west axis that runs from the Louvre to the Grand Arch. There are two twin towers 180m high, linked by an 'inter-tower', and three low buildings, all federated by a large atrium that rises to a height of 44 metres over an hectare of floor space. The typology chosen shuns the model of thick towers, preferring thin, streamlined volumes that generate work spaces near glazed façades, and thus open to daylight. The atrium is a complex space sitting on a three-level base, the highest of which connects to the Charles de Gaulle Esplanade and provides access to all the buildings, restaurants, services and conference centre. 10.000 people work in this huge set. The five buildings of the set enter into rythmic play and express taut effort in their clean skins, clean lines and curved edges (text from website architect). . Public access unknown! . . . The pavilion adheres to Le Corbusier's 'five points of architecture', but with a number of developments since the Villa Savoye. The free façade and horizontal window have become a continuous glazed curtain wall, on the south side of the building (above). The pilotis have developed from thin columns to six massive reinforced concrete 'dog-bones' or 'thighs' with their characteristic figure-of-eight cross section to withstand winds. Cité de Refuge Address Rue Cantagrel 12 75013 Paris France . The Salvation Army Refuge in Paris was Le Corbusier's first opportunity to create accommodation for the urban poor. The compact site provided the chance for a radical approach both to bringing in light and space and to laying out the entrance halls to accommodate the Salvation Army's reception process. The core of Le Corbusier's design was the dormitory slab with a sheer glass curtain wall. Critical to the success of this south-facing glass wall was to have been a technologically ambitious system of double glazing and air conditioning ('respiration exacte'). These were never built as intended, and the sheer skin of the wall was lost to Le Corbusier's trademark brises soleils later on in an attempt to prevent the inhabitants from overheating. In the spirit of the free plan, Le Corbusier took the entrance hall components out of the dormitory block, constructing a geometric pathway through separate reception buildings outside (text from www.galinsky.com). photo: goa . While climbing the steep and bustling road of Ménilmontant the student residence slowly reveals itself in a series of paradoxes: deeply rooted in the context of the Parisian apartment block, it also stands out as something unexpected and intriguing. The strict street alignment imposed by planning regulation is punctured by a two-storey porch, bursting with colour and light, begging the viewer to look deep into the heart of the Parisian block where a hidden world awaits: two rows of former workshops, rehabilitated into 16 loft apartments, a street-like space between. The spatial connection between these workshops and the porch, accentuated by a topographical shift, provides a vibrant outdoor gathering space for the students. This project consists of the redevelopment of an existing building, as well as adding an extension. This extension consists of a simple, rigorous and radical volume, located perpendicular to the existing building. The projected façades of the additional level are adjusted to the original ones with the same vertical gaps. The coatings of the façades are have been enlivened with vegetal prints. These provide a subtle texture and give scale to the project. This treatment confers to the new building a poetic aspect which plays with the surrounding trees. . Nouveau Casino Address Rue Oberkampf 109 75011 Paris France http://www.nouveaucasino.net . In a very dense urban setting, the task was to create an auditorium at the back of a fine early 20th-century Parisian café with a sound capacity of 135dbA. The principle chosen was that of the box within a box, thus preserving the image and atmosphere of the Café Charbon which, with the construction of kitchens on the ground floor and basement levels, acquired a restaurant in the process. The Nouveau Casino, located behind the mirror in the main room, is designed in a modern style, in reference to the film Star Wars. The main room of the Nouveau Casino is designed as a deep cavern with uneven walls covered in black untreated steel, along which there is a very long, organic and gentle shaped bar in luminous translucent resin. A mezzanine above the entrance offers another perception of the space. There is a stage at the end of the hall for musicians. Eventhough the reading room, the public space of the floor, spreads in a central position, the glass, the material used in the project, eclipses the dense occupation of the place. Transparent, opaque, bright or mirror, it values R. Rogers and R. Piano's building and lets light reach the center of the floor. Furniture and working people are hidden by transparent glass panels made of mirrors, 1.40m high. This composition turns the space in a kind of game place where people appear and disappear through transparent glass or hidden by mirrors, letting the image hint at activity but never revealing it. photo: Luc Boegly . Pink Ghost Address Place Furstemberg 75006 Paris France . In the framework of the second edition of the Contemporary Art Exposition Saint-Germain-des-Près, Périphériques Architectes were invited to participate with an installation on Place Furstemberg. The Pink Ghost was a 'sculptural transformation' of the centre of the square with a 'preservation' stance. Made of pink epoxy, the installation enveloped four trees and a streetlight to a height of 2.5 metres and covered the entire surface of the small central square. While the covering work was being done, the architects cleverly 'slipped' about 20 chairs and five coffee tables under the resine, to turn this exterior urban space into an 'interior' lounge/salon situated outside, in a way that raises questions about the status of public space in the city. After its removal from the square, Pink Ghost was rebuilt in the French pavilion at the Biennale of Architecture in Venice, as a memory of the plaza and its new use. photo: Périphériques architectes . Paris Eight Address Rue de Courcelles 40 75008 Paris France http://www.pariseight.fr/ . Paris Eight is a 18.000m² building located in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD). Formerly the headquarters of a bank and renovated in 1999, the building was in need of a new renovation in order to attract some new tenants. The figure 8 has always been associated with renewal. Whilst respecting the linearity and purity of the art deco façade, ASAA has breathed new life into the interior of Paris Eight. The redevelopment reconciles history and technological innovation and at the same time provides the building with present-day comforts and practical features. To obtain this result, ASAA followed three main ideas: transform a unique tenant building in a multi-tenant building; create a proper identity to the building and realise the works whilst respecting the environment. photo: Luc Boegly . Daunay housing Address Impasse Daunay 6 75011 Paris France . This large block of 8 flats merges smoothly into the heterogeneity of the Impasse Daunay cul-de-sac. Facing the street, the textured glass skin covering the facades pays discreet homage to the glass walls of the artists’ studios in this Père Lachaise neighbourhood. The choice of glass, used here for the facade covering, parapets, transparent partitions for common areas or simply as windows, has an aesthetic appeal in its uniformity of material and stark simplicity in keeping with the project’s general low key approach: just 8 housing units in a little cul-de-sac. On the courtyard side, the retified pine cladding extends the ambiance of the neighbouring condominium‘s garden. The orange colour of the communal areas has the effect of highlighting the glass’s dominant hard characteristic. The systematic nature of this monochrome look is counter-balanced by the vivid brightness of the common areas. In the street, the colour is relatively unobtrusive and is visible only in the entrance. photo: Luc Boegly . Project is not public! . Soleil d'Or Address Rue de Vaugirard 226 75014 Paris France . This project presents a double stake : Restoration of a XVIIIth century middle class house, which became a 'guinguette' in the XIXth century, sitting on rue de Vaugirard, and the development of the heart of a housing block filled with history and saving a piece of countryside in Paris. The operation consists in restoring 22 accommodations in the ancient parts and 19 in the new buildings inside the block. The central space, will be changed back into a garden-orchard as described in an inventory in 1785 on the November the 18th. 16 trees will be planted. It will be both a natural extension for neighbour plots and relieve congestion in this part of the XVth district of Paris. Although H & E certification applies only to new housing, we chose to think globally for this project by designing the entire program in the spirit of the charter signed between the City and the OPAC. As a result we included while choosing materials : biomur, wooden window frames, green roofs, zinc roofing . photo: Agence Deschamps . Project is not public! . . . . . . Eiffel Tower Address Avenue Gustave Eiffel 75007 Paris France http://www.tour-eiffel.fr . For the Universal Exhibition of 1889, a date that marked the centenary of the French Revolution, the Journal Officiel launched a major competition to “study the possibility of erecting an iron tower on the Champ-de-Mars. The tower would have a square base, 125 metres on each side and 300 meters high”. The project proposal by entrepreneur Gustave Eiffel, engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier and architect Stephen Sauvestre was chosen out of a total of 107. The construction of the Eiffel Tower in 1889 was Eiffel's crowning achievement. His career as an entrepreneur would come to an end with the failure of the Panama Canal project. From then on, he devoted his time to operating the Tower and to various experiments in air resistance, the observation of meteorology and especially the installation of a giant antenna for the earliest radio broadcasts. Indeed, it is because of these experiments that the Eiffel Tower is still standing, since it was initially built to last 20 years. photo: Bjorn Utpott . Project is public! .
