The President’s Perspective
Planning and Providing
I was getting on a plane to go home.
A moment later a mom with a baby
and two boys got on the plane and
occupied the row in front of me. Each
of the boys was carrying a backpack
that the mother quickly stored under
the seat in front of them. She then
buckled the carrier and baby into the

seat beside her, and ordered the boys
to fasten their seat belts. This troupe of four was strapped in
their seats and ready for the flight within a minute. The crew
went through the pre-flight routine and we soon lifted off the
runway in Chicago.
There was nothing out of the ordinary until the plane made the
turn and headed for home. Then the mother spoke a word of
permission to the boys, and I watched as they leaned forward
in sync and pulled up their backpacks. THE PACKS WERE
MAGIC! The young travelers started examining the contents.
The items came out two by two: spiral notepads, colored pencil
boxes, art pads, crayons, GameBoys, DVD players, assorted
toys, etc., etc., etc. This busy Mom had planned to meet the challenge of the trip.
She had considered the minds of her children (Charlie had told
me he was six, and the younger brother was not far behind)
the time of the trip, and the confinement within the plane. The
Mom was not idle during the flight, but constantly cared for the
baby while supervising the boys. There were occasional words
of correction and also moments of loving kindness. I live with
Martha, the greatest Mom I know, but I think even she would
have taken note. We all have a heart for those we love.
People tell me time and time again that they love Hillsdale Free
Will Baptist College. The College is the child of the Church.
It is sustained by loyal friends who, because they love it, have
invested their time and given sacrificially to provide for it.
There are yet many things that need to happen in order for
Hillsdale to successfully complete this current college year.
•We need more individuals to join the faith promise
partners who contribute monthly to Hillsdale (you can
complete a faith promise at www.hc.edu online).
•We need churches to participate in the “Have a
Heart for Hillsdale” fundraiser and to forward those offerings
to Hillsdale by May, 2006.
• We need individuals to contribute items for our “Bid
for the Future” Annual Auction, and attend on Friday night,
April 21, 2006.
•We need volunteers to complete the numerous repair
and remodeling projects on campus (call Bob Thompson at
405-912-9458 or email [email protected] to schedule a
time).
Have a Heart for Hillsdale and her students. Help by planning

NEW PROGRAM HAS SUCCESS ON THE FIELD AND IN LIFE
Students Participate in Big Brothers Big Sisters Program
This is the first year for intercollegiate soccer at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College. The cornerstone of the effort was the
choice of a dedicated Christian man to lead the program. Parents, trustees, and students have remarked to the staff about
the influence for Christ that Coach Doug Loafman is having among our students. This is typified by Coach Loafman’s
devotional text at the team rally, prior to leaving for the National Tournament.
When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and
behind, he chose some of the choice men of Israel, and put them in array
against the Syrians: 12 Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our
people…And may the LORD do what is good in His sight. 2 Samuel 10:9, 12
The following are excerpts from three members of the team:
I had never heard of Hillsdale FWB College until Coach Loafman contacted me. He informed me that it would be the first
year for the College to have a soccer team. I was very interested and wanted to be a part of this historical event.
Taylor Stevenson, freshman from Texas
When I left my dad’s church to come to Hillsdale, I never thought we would have a soccer team. One of the highlights of my
life so far, is winning the regional championship against Dallas Christian. There have been a lot of happy times in my life,
but the joy and sense of accomplishment that I felt on the day we won the regional championship surpasses them all. We
began not even knowing whether or not we would have a season, to playing with NAIA schools and beating them. We then
won the regional, and now we are looking forward to the National Tournament. Besides the soccer aspect of it, I’ve gained
some of the best friends a guy could ask for. Yes, we’ve had some rough times such as struggles with courses, injuries, and
even arguments, but no matter what happened, God took care of it. Blessings come in all shapes and sizes and soccer has
been a huge blessing to me, the team, the coach and the College.

When I came to Hillsdale to play soccer I was a little anxious about the small size of the school. My previous schools
averaged around 20,000 students, but I have learned that small can be an advantage. It is easy to meet people and it is easy to
develop a relationship
with one’s teachers.
This adds great value
to the social and
educational aspects of
college, which are two
of the most important
things. I have truly
been
blessed
by
coming to Hillsdale,
not to mention that
our first year soccer
team is the regional
champion.
I
am
proud to be part of an
institution that stands
on the doctrines of
Christ, and to be at
a school where the
spiritual education is
just as important as
the intellectual.

and the Community, several of our students have put this motto into action.
Eight students and two staff members are participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program.
This program has several areas in which to work. Our students and staff members are helping by giving
one hour a week at an elementary school in the area. During this time
they play games with their “little
brother or sister”, help with
school work, and/or just spend
time together one-on-one.

Hillsdale Honored with the Privilege of
Hosting Military Homecoming
On November 30, 2005, Hillsdale was honored to host the HHC &
Co. E, 1/245th Aviation Battalion (ATS) Welcome Home Ceremony.
Operation Iraqi Freedom III Awards were given to the 94 soldiers.
Family and friends, including Hillsdale faculty, staff, and students
applauded the soldiers as they received their medals. Colonel Kenneth Moore, Commander, 90th Troop Command presented a Plaque
of Appreciation to Bob Thompson, VP of Institutional Advancement
(pictured), for hosting this ceremony.

Have a Heart for Hillsdale
When you support Hillsdale, you are not just supporting buildings, vehicles, etc. These are only tools that we must
have to support the true heart of Hillsdale: our students. Often people wonder if we are having an impact and if
anything is being accomplished, but after reading the two essays below (one written by a former student who sent
her thoughts in an email and asked to remain anonymous, and the other written by Dakota Waldrop, a freshman
from Pampa, TX) we believe you will see that Hillsdale has had, and is having, an impact on our students for Him
and for His cause - an impact in which you, as supporters, play a major role. It is you who help keep our doors
open; without your support and prayers, we could do nothing. Throughout this issue of the Insight, you will see the
work that God is doing in the lives of our students, in our community and in our world.
Children can be cruel; anyone who has been in public
school can attest to this. During my elementary and middle
school years, I was constantly mocked, ridiculed and teased.
Due to this I felt unwanted; depression soon crept in. I’ve been
a Christian for as long as I can remember. The love of God is
the only thing that kept me going. I have always excelled in
school work, so I told myself that I would get good grades, go
to an Ivy League school, then come back to shove my success in
the faces of those who hurt me. God had other plans.
As I became more and more depressed, I gradually
lost any will to do a good job. I slacked off in class and made
a far lower GPA than I was capable of making. High school
was boring to me, and the only place I felt accepted was in
the band. However, high school ends and friends move on.
When this began to happen I found myself in a rut. I did
not have the grades needed to go where I wanted and I was
socially inexperienced. My church has always given money to
Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College, so I went to On Campus
Days during my senior year just to check it out. Being shy, I felt
awkward around all of the people on campus. When I got back
home I starting thinking and praying about it, and I just felt so
scared that I did the only thing I could think of – I took classes
at the community college. I still had the ignorant attitude of
a high school senior and it was not long before I was just not
showing up for classes at all. This went on for two semesters.
I was starting to feel trapped and helpless; doomed to be a
minimum wage waste to society. During the summer, I was in
my room cleaning when I came across the Hillsdale Catalog. I
stared at it for about an hour. I kept hearing a voice in my head
saying, “Go on. Read it. I want you to go; you need to go”.
Finally, I opened the catalog and read it from cover to cover. I
immediately felt compelled to go to Hillsdale. I prayed a short
prayer to God telling Him that I would follow His will. I then
began to do all the necessary things to get me to Hillsdale. Now
I’m a freshman at this wonderful college.
I truly believe God wanted me here; He wants many
to come learn and fellowship. The campus is beautiful. The
atmosphere is pleasant and so far the classes have been great.
The greatest attribute I have found at Hillsdale is the people.
The faculty really reflects Christ through their actions and even
in the way that the classes are taught. Every faculty member I’ve
spoken to truly cares for the other staff and for the students.
My fellow students have welcomed me and I am slowly coming
out of my anti-social shell. Everyone on campus cares for one
another. It is my personal opinion that anyone who is going
to be searching for a college should come and at least check
out Hillsdale. God is number one on this campus and every
individual is cared about. I encourage anyone and everyone to
visit.
Dakota Waldrop
On my first day at Hillsdale, I walked in thinking
“What in the world did I get myself into”, but I soon realized
that Hillsdale was a great place to build friendships that will last
a lifetime. I met so many people and I still keep in touch with
some of them. They pulled me out of all the holes I kept falling
into over and over again.
I might not have always agreed with how the school
ran things, but Hillsdale was not there to meet just my needs,
but the needs of many others too. Yeah, the rules are strict and
I didn’t always follow them, but the rules have to be present in
order to run things in the world these days. They have to do
what it takes to have a student body ready and willing to serve
God, both on and off campus.
I have grown up in a Christian home and I know the
difference between right and wrong but if I hadn’t gone to
Hillsdale, I don’t have a clue where I would be today. I am now
at a state school and I look around me and thank God that I am
me and I didn’t turn out like some people I am around now. I
miss the Christian atmosphere that Hillsdale provided.
I know the school is always struggling with finances
because it does cost a lot to run an institution, but I pray that
there will always be a place like Hillsdale for college students
to go. Even though the pressures of being young are still there,
people are there to talk to about it and to help you through
your struggles, and that is something that I haven’t been able to
find at my new school.
I just wanted you to know how much Hillsdale and the
faculty, and especially the other students meant to me. Hillsdale
brought me a lot closer to Christ and for that, I will always be
grateful. You are in my prayers.
