As chaplain of a police
agency I was moved to write
to my officers in light of the
current hostile environment.
This is the gist. If you know a cop, feel free to share.
When I signed on as a chaplain with the Hazel Park Police Department years ago, our chief made clear that he wanted chaplains that would also be armed reserve police. The reserve uniform
was the same as that of regular officers. When people looked,
they saw a cop. Sometimes the “looks” were glares of undisguised
hatred. I came to accept that some people hated me for the uniform and badge I wore. My wife and I both understood this. Her
typical benediction when I left for duty was, “I love you. Donʼt get
shot!”
The current hostile climate toward police will hopefully pass us
by soon, but whether it does or not, officer, you and your loved
ones need to believe that you are part of one of the noblest, most
essential occupations on this earth. Know also that you are as
lauded by the hatred of your enemies as you are affirmed by the
esteem of your friends. This can be obscured when abject lies are
told and rhetoric used that poison the environment. So be encouraged. Stay the course. Know that you are loved and appreciated
and as the wife says…well, you know.
