The next volunteer day will be held on November

please RSVP to [email protected]
General Information on Volunteer days
The volunteer days are held at our paddock at 539 Kurmond Rd, Freeman’s Reach and start from
10am. (See the calendar of events for details of the dates).
We supply morning tea and coffee, but ask people to bring along a drink for themselves and some
lunch (if required)
Usually we give all the horses a much needed groom and clean up, and also do a little bit of
poo patrol", but that is entirely voluntary! Mostly it is just a nice day spent in the company of the
horses, and other like minded people.
Closed in shoes must be worn, but boots are preferable. Sorry, but dogs are strictly not allowed
VALE—HR GLOW (1984—2009)
Unfortunately Glow’s skin cancer on his nose got
progressively worse. He started to go downhill in
his general health as well and we decided it would
be best for him to be euthanized. He was a great
gentleman and had settled in so well since he
arrived last year. He was a real favorite with Jo –
one of our committee members. He will be sadly
missed.
Can you help with our next Gear and Garage Sale - 2010
Our last gear sale was such a great success that we are planning to hold another one in 2010. We
are already stocking up. If you can help us by donating any second hand horse gear: rugs, halters,
leads, etc please contact us and we can arrange to collect it if necessary.
AVAILABLE FOR
ADOPTION
Once they are rehabilitated, Horse Rescue horses are offered for placement into caring adoption
homes. Our horses go out to homes vaccinated, wormed, feet done, teeth done and ready to be
loved. We ensure that prospective adoptive homes know of any emotional or physical problems
that the horse may have, in order to ensure that the adoption has the best possible chance
of working out. Some of our horses can be ridden and other cannot, but make great mates for your
equine friends at home.
Riding horses are matched to the most appropriate home where the riding experience of the new
owner is suitable for the horse.
There is a fee for adopting a HRA horse. This fee covers the direct costs involved in rescuing and
rehabilitating horses. The fee for each horse is worked out on an individual basis, so contact us if
you are interested in any of the horses below:
HR DODGER
Dodger came to HRA in May 2008. His owner had recently
passed away and his wife couldn't look after Dodger as she had
no horse knowledge. Dodger had lived with them since he was 3
years old, and had had him for about 17 years. He hadn't left
that property since he arrived 17 years earlier, but he happily
walked out onto the street and got into the float (after a little bit
of encouragement) to come to HRA. He

HR SCARLET
Scarlet is a very sensitive mare who has come from a carer
home after being taken from an agistment property where she
had been dumped. She was in such poor condition at the time
that she could have succumbed to ill health and given up.
Thankfully she pulled through and shows no ill-effects healthwise. She has a lovely natural head

Mo was abandoned at an agistment property at Albion
Park. Before he came to HRA he was suffering from low
calcium and had an abscess in his abdomen. He is now
fit and well. He has been ridden in the past, but due to
his back and hind leg problems is being offered as a
companion only. He is a lovely horse and would make a
great companion for you and your horse.

HR PRINCESS
Princess came to HRA with a few
friends from a property that was
unable to sustain so many ponies.
She is quite friendly especially if
there's food involved, but can be a bit
pushy, and isn't too keen on getting
her feet picked up. If you think
Princess could make a great addition
to your family , give us a call!

Millie and her baby “Possum” came to HRA
with a few friends from a property that was
unable to sustain so many ponies. Her owners
felt unable to cope with their care, and they
were in need of help. She is very wary of
people, and is extremely hard to catch.
However she is happy to take a carrot from
you! She is currently living happily with the
herd.
Recently Adopted
HR POSSUM
Possum is in the process of being adopted by Jo & Steve, they are still in the
process of creating an “escape proof” paddock for her, as she likes to go and
play with the “big boys” out the back. She is a little timid, but will do great
with some one on one attention.
HR STORMY
Stormy has made herself at home with her new family
Pauline & Kevin at East Kurrajong. We have heard that
she has become great friends with the family dogs!
HR COBBITTY
Cobbitty has been adopted by Jennifer. We
hope he is not being too cheeky, but he is really
enjoying all the attention.
HR DORA
Dora has been adopted by a wonderful home
with Katie at Glenorie. She has settled in well.
UPDATES FROM
ADOPTION HOMES
Just wanted to give you an update on how Monster is going. He is
a little treasure and is very spoilt. He has only escaped 3 times
and he goes and joins my neighbors horses and thinks he can stay
for a while but she brings him back for me. He is looking very
smart with his winter coat, nice and fluffy and of course fat!
People who visit say how cute he is. Not sure about the horse vet
though when he had his teeth done last year as he managed to
give him a good kick in the knee even though he was
sedated! Still the vet stood behind him and pulled his tail so what
can you expect. Monster won that battle.
Monster now has a little mate
his own size to pick on. His
name is Elvis and he is a grey
Shetland. They are the best of
mates and look lovely in the
paddock together.
At present I am getting quotes
on brand new fencing so he will
have even more paddocks to
roam in and more grass. He does like to nibble on some hay
now and then and loves any sort of hard feed but just a very
small handful now and then. Monster is a great asset to the
family and we love him dearly. (from Wendy)
Just to give you an update on how well my darling Charlie is going. He clicked with me the moment
he stepped off the truck and we have become great buddies (he comes running to me as soon as I
step into the paddock). He has two new Weatherbeeta rugs, a cotton and a medium Landa, which
he just adores and he is filling them out nicely. His mane is now starting to grow and is around
3cm long and the severe rug burns behind his withers and on his tail are starting to produce hair
now too. He has the sweetest nature and is very curious and is finally starting to recognise his
name when I call out to him. His butt now looks very nice and his topline and withers are filling out
nicely, as he has quite a walk around his huge paddock, thus using his muscles quite a bit and
building them up very nicely and the mare next door (Grace) and he have finally settled down and
become good mates. He is very happy and healthy
and just loves attention, even when he is to
be haltered, he walks up to me, sniffs the halter and
puts his head down for me to put it on, which doesn't
happen very often, only for the farrier etc., as everything else I do with him is done at liberty with his
willing participation.
When I take some pics of him unrugged I will send
them on to you, he has lost most of his winter coat
now and he has a beautiful glossy shine to his coat
now and is a liver chestnut roan colour, I can't wait
until his mane and tail have grown long again.
I just adore Charlie and he has helped to heal a very
deep grief for me after the loss of my darling Annie.
THANK YOU so much from both me and Charlie (and also my huskies who have now settled down
extremely well after his arrival as well). (from Fern)
IN THE NEWS
Horse Talk TV
Horse Talk TV, an exciting, new, locally produced television program hit Australian TV screens,
launching in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on Wednesday 14th October at 7pm, following a
week later in Adelaide on Tuesday 20th October.
The weekly, half-hour, magazine-style program is made for horse lovers, by horse lovers. Horse
Talk TV will cover all the high-profile horse sports from dressage to reining plus other, more
unusual horse-related activities; like trick riding and liberty horses and for something completely
different, a spot of jousting! There will also be “Ask-the-Expert” editorials where industry experts
give viewers the latest in horse health, new products and regular educational tips in the “Tip of the
Week” segment.
Horse Talk TV has been warmly welcomed by the horse industry across Australia. At last! horse
sports and horse activities will get the much needed opportunity for national exposure on free to air
TV. The new show for horse lovers can be seen on Channel 31 in Sydney (TVS), Melbourne (C31),
Brisbane (QCTV) and Adelaide (C31) with WTV Perth following later in the year.
For regional viewers Horse Talk TV will be streamed live on the TVS web (www.tvs.org.au) site and
screened episodes can also be downloaded from the C31 Melbourne web site (www.C31.org.au).
Horse Talk TV is also offering a DVD boxed set of the 1st series, which can be purchased via the
web site.
With Horse Talk’s interactive website, there’s a lot more than a weekly half hour show to hang out
for. The Horse Talk TV website will run video pod-casts of segments from each program following
airing – how convenient! Viewers can also enter into competitions such as “Make My Horse A Star”
by sending in a short video of their horse or write in to ask a horse care question to have the
chance for their question to feature in Horse Talk TV’s “Tip of the Week”. The site also includes a
members’ page where members can upload their favourite You Tube videos to share with other
horse enthusiasts.
Visit Horse Talk TV’s web site www.horsetalktv.com.au for information on how to tune in your TV to
receive the show and look forward to a homegrown TV-Web smorgasbord for horse lovers.
HRA to appear on Horse Talk
Filming has already happened, you will be able to see our wonderful caretaker Anne and some other HR
committee members being interviewed on an episode of Horse Talk TV. Check out our website – we will
update it when we know the date it will be shown!
SPONSORSHIP
Don’t forget Sponsorship is now tax deductible!
Sponsorship is a great way to help us care for the horses here at HRA. You can sponsor a certain
horse (choose from those below), or just sponsor the HRA horses in general. You don’t have to be
a member to sponsor the horses. You can sponsor as little or as much as you like, it’s completely
up to you. Contact us for more information if you are interested in becoming a sponsor.

and rescued by concerned neighbours who
brought him to Rescue. He is a delight to catch
and handle. He is doing really well now but due
to his age will remain on the sponsorship list
until we can find him the perfect home.
HR CHESTER
Chester came to HRA in August 2006 after
receiving horrific injuries to both his
hind-legs in a fence accident. Upon his
arrival he underwent a few months of
intensive vet treatment and bandage
changes every 3-4 days. He is now
bandage free and looks and feels a
million dollars! He still has quite a way to go before he is
completely healed and ready to go to a home, and as such will
remain a sponsored horse until then.

Sahara is very timid and has a hard time fitting in with
humans. She is very happy to be out the back with the
herd – where she can be the “boss”. There is a bit of a
trick to catching her, but once caught she can receive daily
care such as brushing, having her feet trimmed etc (as
long as you do it all with care!). However she will always be ready to “run” Breed: Stockhorse

NEW ARRIVALS
HR TIA
Tia is a stockhorse mare in her mid twenties. She was
recently surrendered when a concerned neighbour
contacted us about her plight. The neighbour had been
feeding her and her friend Bundy and contacted us to see if
we could help. Luckily they were surrendered to HRA and
Tia is now starting her road to rehabilitation. It is thought
that she had a foal last year, but the foal was taken from
her at birth as she wasn’t well enough to feed it. Her feet
are also in a terrible state. She has had a rough life, and we
will keep you updated on her progress.
HR BUNDY
Bundy is a 10 year old Standardbred gelding.
He is a sweet natured horse. He wasn’t in as
bad a state as Tia, but was starting to get
thin. We will be working with the Standardbred
Association to re home him
THE PONY EXPRESS PART 2
Four more ponies from the same property as Millie, Stormy. Possum and crew are due to arrive
soon. HRA originally didn't take them on as they are colts and stallions. The owners of the property
were to find other homes for them. However the ponies are now in need of our help. Once they arrive they will go straight to the vets to be gelded.
Once we have photos and more info on them we will post it onto our website.

with her at the PNH day Honey was part of.
HR POPPET
Poppet had found a great home with Danielle at East Kurrajong. She is a cutie
and we hope she is going well!
