The Parris Island Marine Band
Parris Island, S.C.
The United States Marine Corps Silent
Drill Platoon
On October 28, 1915, the Department of the Navy officially
transferred Marine Corps recruit training from Norfolk, Va., to
Parris Island, S.C. Among the first 750 Marines sent to Parris Island were the Depot’s first bandmaster and the Depot’s
first drum major, who with a group of Marine musicians,
formed the Parris Island Marine Band. Until this time, musicians had been trained by individual bands, so a field music school was established at Parris Island to train buglers
who were still being used for calls and signals. Musicians
also doubled as marksmanship instructors, close combat
instructors, and provided support for various units on the
Depot. In addition to the constant state of musical readiness
for which Marine bands are known, the members never lose
sight of the fact that they are, first and foremost, Marines. To
live up to this responsibility, the band participates in all required Marine Corps training, consisting of Marine field exercises, physical fitness and combat readiness tests, combat
water survival, and annual service rifle qualification. This
is to ensure Marine musicians remain prepared to perform
their primary mission as basic Marine riflemen. Today, the
Parris Island Marine Band, with 50 enlisted instrumentalists
and one band officer, performs hundreds of commitments
each year in every idiom imaginable. The different groups
within the band consist of a concert band, marching/ceremonial band, stage band, brass quintet, and jazz combo.
The Parris Island Marine Band’s primary mission is to provide musical support for the Recruit Training Regiment as
well as events in the Beaufort area. In addition to playing at
more than 40 recruit graduations each year, the band also
performs numerous concerts and parades all across the
United States, to include performances in Minnesota, Kentucky, Florida, New York, Georgia, Massachusetts, and South
Carolina. The culmination of military pride and efficiency,
along with precise musical expertise, has set the United
States Marine Field Bands apart from any other military unit.
The Parris Island Marine Band is dedicated to upholding and
displaying the high standards and traditions established by
the United States Marine Corps.
The Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon is a 24-man rifle
platoon that performs a unique precision drill exhibition.
This highly disciplined platoon exemplifies the professionalism associated with the United States Marine
Corps. The Silent Drill Platoon first performed in the
Sunset Parades of 1948 and received such an overwhelming response that it soon became a regular part
of the parades at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C. The
Marines execute a series of calculated drill movements
and precise handling of their hand-polished, 10-andone-half pound, M1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets.
The routine concludes with a unique rifle inspection sequence demonstrating elaborate rifle spins and tosses.
These Marines are individually selected from the Schools
of Infantry located in Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Camp
Lejeune, N.C., based on interviews conducted by barracks personnel. Once selected, Marines are assigned to
Marine Barracks Washington to serve a 2-year ceremonial tour. Beyond their ceremonial duties, the Marines
collaterally train in the field as infantrymen. To remain
proficient, these Marines hone their infantry skills at
Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., throughout the year.
Experienced members of the Silent Drill Platoon have the
opportunity to audition to become rifle inspectors. They
must go through inspection tryouts graded by the rifle
inspectors of the previous year. Only two Marines per
year are selected to become rifle inspectors. They, along
with the platoon’s drill master, are entrusted with keeping and passing on the unique knowledge and traditions
of the Silent Drill Platoon.

Keep Pounding
Drum Ceremony
US Army Sgt. Kyle White
Keep Pounding has become a
Carolina Panthers mantra in
honor of late Panthers player
and coach Sam Mills. Mills first
used the phrase “Keep Pounding” as a coach, in an emotional
speech to the team prior to the
Jan. 2, 2004 Panthers vs. Cowboys playoff victory. Mills spoke
about commitment, dedication to teammates, team effort and never giving up…he asked players to “Keep
Pounding.” Immediately following the coin toss, please
turn your attention to the 20-yard line at the Southeast
end of the stadium. Today’s Keep Pounding Drummer
is former US Army Sgt. Kyle White. After enlisting in
2006, White attended initial military training and the
US Army Airborne course before being assigned to Italy
and later deployed to Afghanistan as a platoon radio
telephone operator. In November of 2007, Kyle’s patrol
was ambushed and he sustained severe injuries after
a grenade detonated knocking him unconscious, sending shrapnel into his face, and blocking him and several
other soldiers off from the rest of their patrol. Despite
his own wounds, White preceded to collect and save his
wounded comrades amidst heavy enemy fire as well as
providing key information to his higher headquarters
to understand the enemy position. After sustaining a
second concussion due to another mortar assault, White
continued to help friendly Afghan Army forces establish
a secure perimeter and secured a MedEvac rescue for
his comrades and lastly, for himself. White has been
heavily decorated for his extraordinary service and uncommon valor including receiving the nation’s highest
military recognition, the Medal of Honor.

2014 PANTHERS COACHES
RON
RIVERA
HEAD COACH
Ron Rivera was named the fourth coach in Carolina Panthers history on January 11, 2011. In 2013, his third year with the
Panthers, Rivera led Carolina to 12 wins, the NFC South division title and its first playoff appearance since 2008. After
starting the season with a 1-3 record, the Panthers won 11 of their final 12 regular season games – including a franchise
record eight-game winning streak – to secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. In recognition of that success,
Rivera was named NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Carolina’s record has improved every season under Rivera. Before joining the Panthers, Rivera served two stints as a defensive coordinator, first with the Chicago Bears from 200406 and then with the San Diego Chargers from midway through the 2008 season until the end of 2010. Rivera also coached
as an assistant with the Chargers, the Bears, and the Philadelphia Eagles. A second-round draft choice of Chicago in 1984,
Rivera played nine seasons as a linebacker with the Bears and was a member of the Super Bowl XX championship team.

MIKE
SMITH
HEAD COACH
Mike Smith was named the 14th head coach in Atlanta Falcons franchise history on January 23, 2008. In six seasons (2008-13) with
the team, he has compiled a 60-36 regular-season record, three playoff appearances and, for the first time in franchise history, four
consecutive winning seasons. His .688 winning percentage is the best in team history over a three-year period (2010-12). Smith’s 33
wins are easily the most victories by a Falcons head coach in his first three years on the job. Smith’s club posted the NFC’s top record
at 13-3 in both 2010 and 2012. When Smith’s charges captured the NFC South title in 2010, it was only the fourth Division crown in
franchise history (and first since 2004). In 2008, Smith guided the Falcons to an 11-5 record, marking a seven-win turnaround from
the previous season. For his efforts, he was named the Associated Press and Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year.

COMBINES LUXURY
AND POWER.
THE YACHTS DO, TOO.
To add premium accommodations to the abundant power of the new 2015 Sierra Denali HD,
we took our lead from a yacht. We put a comfortable, quiet and sophisticated cabin on
top of the proven powertrain of the available Duramax 6.6L V-8 Turbo Diesel and Allison®
transmission. Over 1 million of them are on the road with over 100 billion combined
miles. Inside there’s burnished aluminum trim, a durable soft-touch instrument panel
with contrasting stitching and leather-appointed perforated front seats with dualfirmness foam. Nearly two-thirds of the cab structure is made from high-strength steel,
which contributes to its quiet cabin. All of this proves that Sierra HD is more than just a
truck. It’s incredible thinking in the form of a heavy-duty truck.
THE NEW GMC SIERRA DENALI HD. THAT’S PROFESSIONAL GRADE.

Q&A with JERRICHO COTCHERY
This week, GameTime catches up with wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery. A former record-setting
receiver at North Carolina State University,
Cotchery brings 10 seasons of NFL experience to
a young Panthers receiving corps.
How hard was it growing up being the second
youngest of 13 children?
You had to be fast and tough. You had to fight
your way to the dinner table, you had to get there
pretty quickly. My siblings made me tough, they
made me who I am today. They picked on me a lot
but it was always fun with them.
What was the turning point in not only your career but more importantly your life?
It happened right before I turned 16 years old, I
was in a car accident. One of my friends who was
driving at the time, lost his life in that car accident. Basically in that moment I was introduced
to who Jesus Christ was.
How does it feel to be playing back in the state
of North Carolina after your college days at NC
State?
It feels great to be back down here. I’m familiar
with the fan base and the energy and everything
that is brought into the stadium on Sundays. I just
remember the smell of the grass. It’s definitely an
honor to be back down here and especially since my
wife is from here, it’s great to be back near family.
What was going through your mind when you
were able to break Torry Holt’s receptions and
100-yard receiving records while at NC State?
It’s crazy because I never thought about records
when I was at NC State. The only records I thought
about were the ones surrounding our bowl game
where they were being brought up my senior year.
Philip (Rivers) had some records that he could
break and we had some records as an offense that
we could break. It is an honor to be named in the
same category as Torry (Holt), I know him personally and he is an outstanding guy. It is definitely
an honor, I looked up to him, and so it is really cool
to be mentioned in a conversation with him.
What has been the biggest difference so far in
your transition from the Pittsburgh Steelers to
the Carolina Panthers?
It’s been easy from a personal standpoint because
of my familiarity with the state and being closer to
family. But from a locker room perspective, having
to come to a new team was easier than I expected.
I knew a few guys before I got here but I didn’t
know we had so many great guys on the team and
that’s made my transition so easy. It’s been pretty
smooth on both ends of it.
How different is it being a receiver for Cam Newton compared to the quarterbacks you‘ve had in
the past?
It is fun playing with Cam because you know you
are going to get opportunities because of his ability to extend plays. I will say that I got a taste of
that while in Pittsburgh, but I know spots to get to
when plays break down. It is fun to play with him,
he is an outstanding talent and I’m excited to step
on the field with him.
You are an integral part of a new receiving corps
this season with the Panthers, how have you
guys been able to jumpstart your chemistry with
one another with no prior experience leading up
to this year?
It actually helped that we were all new to one another. We were able to bond from day one and I
think a lot of guys around us noticed it. Cam even
mentioned how tight he thought our group was. I
think since there were a lot of new guys that allowed us to come together and helped us establish
that chemistry a lot faster than if there were just
one or two new guys.
37
Q&A with JERRICHO COTCHERY (continued)
What have you seen out of the young Kelvin Benjamin so far?
I’ve seen a willingness to be great and a guy that
listens. With a guy that talented, sometimes it is
hard for a guy to receive information and he does
it well. He listens to not only myself but Jason
(Avant) as well and he does a great job of trying to
apply some of the experiences that we’ve had and
shared with him. Obviously he has one of the best
coaches around to learn from and I know that’s
helped me out a lot because I can go and ask him
what it is like to go into year 11. Not only does Kelvin have veteran guys to turn to with experience,
but he’s also got a coach who’s gone through it
all too.
How has Coach Proehl been able to impact your
game so far this season?
He’s a very detailed guy and he understands the
game of football in such a different way from
other guys. He’s been around so long so he’s been
through a lot of generations as far as seeing the
different styles of offenses and players so he’s
seen it all. He can relate to my style and Jason’s
style and Kelvin’s so he can coach us up in every
way and that’s how he’s been able to help me.
He’s been around as long as me so he’s been able
to help me in terms of how to approach going into
year 11 and how to think about my body in terms
of taking care of it and things of that nature.
What is the focus of the Cotchery Foundation
and how did this passion of yours come about?
It is to benefit underprivileged youth and lowincome communities because that is what I grew
up in. I just feel there is a need to help kids in that
area; growing up that is what I saw and experienced. I saw lost hope and kids thinking that they
can’t make it out of their situation. A lot of people
just can’t think beyond their environment because
of their circumstances so I just saw a need there
and I just wanted to reach out anytime I had the
opportunity to do so. That is my passion and I’ve
got four kids of my own now so I haven’t been able
to do as much as I’ve liked throughout the course
of the year but it is something I definitely stay involved in.

COACH OF THE WEEK SPOTLIGHT
Carolina Panthers
Coach of the Week
By Matt Wilbur
The Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the
Week program recognizes high school coaches
who, through their hard work and dedication to
young people, have made a difference in the
lives of their players, school and community.
This program also provides high schools with
financial assistance to help maintain and upgrade their football programs.
Mickey Wilson
Myrtle Beach High School
The Carolina Panthers are proud to announce
the selection of Coach Mickey Wilson of Myrtle
Beach High School as the team’s ninth High
School Coach of the Week for the 2014 season. Coach Wilson is in his sixth year as head
coach of Myrtle Beach and 13th year with the
program.
Wilson has been coaching at Myrtle Beach
High School since 2001, serving eight years as
the offensive coordinator before being named
head coach in 2009. In the six seasons under
Wilson, the Seahawks have compiled a 71-12
overall record. Wilson has led Myrtle Beach to
the South Carolina Class 3A State Championship game four times, winning in 2008, 2010
and 2013. Wilson has developed numerous
players in his tenure including three South
Carolina Mr. Football finalists which include
current University of Notre Dame Quarterback,
Everett Golson. Wilson has been rewarded for
his on-field success by being named the South
Carolina Region 7 Coach of the Year in 2009
and 2010. In 2010, Wilson was also named
the 3A South Carolina Coach of the Year. Most
recently, Wilson was named a top three finalist for the South Carolina Coach of the Year
in 2014.
Coach Wilson knows that developing his players as men is just as important as developing them as players. Coach Wilson and the
Seahawks support and give back to the community as much as they can. Coach Wilson
and many of his players can be found putting
on several free camps and football combines
for local children during the offseason and
summer. This is where Coach Wilson starts instilling the ideals of what it takes to be a Seahawk. The team also participates in a “Kids
Hero” program at The Children’s Museum in
Myrtle Beach. Wilson is a graduate of Coastal
Carolina University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education. He is married to
Kristen Wilson, and they have two daughters,
Maura and Mary Cate.
In recognition of Coach Wilson, the Carolina
Panthers will donate $1,000 to Myrtle Beach
High School to support the school’s athletic
department. Coach Wilson and the other 2014
Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the
Week honorees will all be recognized during a
Panthers home game later this season.
The 2014 High School Coach of the Week Program is a joint initiative of the Carolina Panthers and the National Football League. The
program is designed to recognize and reward
North and South Carolina high school coaches
who have created successful programs for
teams and players both on and off of the playing field. This includes coaches that champion philosophies which advance and promote
player health and safety.

MICK’S BAG by Mick Mixon
Our Walter Payton Man Of The Year
The excitement and anticipation were almost too
much for young Thomas Davis to bear. It was
Christmas morning in a single-parent house in
tiny Shellman, Georgia.
“As a little kid, I tried to be good all year so that
Santa Claus would bring me something, anything.” Davis said. “When I saw that there was
nothing there for me, I thought, ‘Was I that bad
of a kid?’ And it wasn’t just one year. There were
many years that my mom, Victoria, just didn’t
have the money. She did the best she could and
so did my grandmother, Mattie, who helped raise
me. But one reason I work with so many kids now
to help them feel love is because I remember how
it felt to make due with less.”
Just as it takes years of pressure and heat to form
the rigid lattice of a diamond, determination and
resolve were instrumental in creating the gemstone that is Thomas Davis.
“I had to wear my football cleats to school every
day in the 3rd grade, because those were the only
shoes I had,” he said. “The other kids would tease
me about it, but I was very fortunate to have some
good teachers and coaches. They helped me to
overcome any trust issues I had as a kid and they
helped me become confident in who I was.”
In his 10 year career with the Carolina Panthers,
Davis has made a massive impact, both on and
off the field. In 2012, Davis became the first
known NFL player to return for a full season after
three ACL reconstructions on the same knee. And
the last two years, he’s played some of the best
football of his career.
“Thomas lives his life the way Walter Payton did
– family and community first,” said Ron Rivera,
the Panthers head coach and a former Payton
teammate. “His commitment as a husband and
father reflects Walter’s loving spirit. And Thomas’s
strength to come back from three straight major
knee surgeries is indicative of Payton’s toughness
on the field. I can think of no other player who is
as deserving as Thomas.”
Davis was a finalist for the Walter Payton Man of
the Year award last year. This year, the Panthers
have nominated him again.
Selected with the 14th overall pick in the 2005
NFL Draft from the University of Georgia, Davis
puts his shoulder into as many charities as he
does enemy ball carriers. In 2007, Davis and his
wife, Kelly, started the Thomas Davis Defending
Dreams Foundation. The TDDDF is a non-profit
dedicated to providing and promoting free pro49
MICK’S BAG by Mick Mixon (continued)
grams that enhance the quality of life for more
than 2000 underprivileged children and their
families annually. The foundation distributes
more than $50,000 in aid each year, most of it
personal contributions made by Davis himself,
but ‘TD’ is much more than just a check-writer. He
is 100% hands-on with every aspect of the TDDDF,
attending each board meeting and fundraiser,
and assisting with the coordination of every event.
Based on the principles of Educate/Empower/
Defend, the foundations’ cornerstone program is
the Youth Leadership Academy, a 14-week afterschool mentoring program for low-income middle
school students. The program is offered every
Monday throughout the school year and is led by
Thomas and Kelly. Class sizes are limited to 30
to ensure a direct impact on each student. The
Academy emphasizes areas like etiquette, public
speaking, leadership and community involvement.
To have even more credibility
with the kids, Davis returned
to Athens, Georgia in 2011 and
earned his degree.
“I couldn’t be a hypocrite and
lecture students about the
importance of education if I
wasn’t willing to do the work it
took myself,” Davis said. “Now
I can speak to them as a college graduate.”
The TDDDF provides a variety
of other programs free to participants. His annual Youth
Football Camp serves over
350 young boys and girls. At
Thanksgiving, the Davis family
and the TDDDF feed clients of
the Battered Women’s Shelter.
The foundation holds an annual Christmas Giveaway,
distributing presents in communities throughout the Carolinas and Davis’s hometown in
Georgia. The TDDDF also hosts
an annual Back to School supply giveaway. And since the
foundation believes in promot50
ing an active and healthy lifestyle, it distributes
toys like bicycles as opposed to video games.
In addition to his work with his foundation, Davis is an enthusiastic participant in the Panthers’ community outreach efforts, including NFL
PLAY60 and AHA programming, and he makes
regular visits to local children’s hospitals.
In April of 2014, Davis received the Call to Courage Award, given annually to a Christian athlete
who displays exemplary character through both
adversity and triumph.
Davis is a four-time Walter Payton Man of the Year
nominee, and was a Finalist in 2013.
To summarize this brightly glittering star in just a
few short pages is nearly impossible, but his wife
Kelly probably says it best: “Thomas Davis is the
epitome of what a great man is.”
