Lonnie Pittman
Lonnie Pittman is a United Methodist pastor at Faith Church in Indian Trail, N.C. Married to Susannah Baskervill Pittman, and father
of three-year-old Preston, Lonnie
and his family live in Monroe, N.C.
Jena Irene, who is from the Detroit suburb of Farmington
Hills, Mich., was the runner-up of the 13th season of
American Idol. Irene became the first female Wild Card
contestant of the series to qualify into the finale, and became the second Wild Card contestant, after Clay Aiken
in the second season, to make it to the finale. Before this
season’s American Idol, she participated in North Farmington’s annual “Coffee House” talent show, and from
ages 12-16 was a member of a band called Infinity Hour.
During the group round on American Idol, she sang “Too
Close” by Alex Clare, alongside Sikenya Thomson, Allie
Odom, and Mufarid Zaidi. She made it into the third part
of Hollywood week by singing an original song called “Unbreakable Me,” which has since been released on iTunes.
Irene performed the song again during her hometown visit
after making it to the top 3. She was announced as the
runner-up on May 21, 2014, at the end of Season 13. Irene
joined the other Top 10 Idols for the American Idol Summer Tour throughout the U.S. this past summer. Jena is
currently working in the studio on her upcoming album,
with a new single coming out soon.

Terry McDermott
Brought to American shores when ‘Driveblind,’ his first
band, were signed to Geffen, and whisked out of their native Scotland, to live in Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Terry
McDermott from the city of Aberdeen, didn’t foresee the
changes that lay in wait. Despite receiving great critical
acclaim for their 2006 debut release and touring extensively in the United States including a performance on fellow
Scot Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show, the band reached its
end as record company relations soured and families were
started. The offer of starting a new Seattle based band with
friend Peter Klett of American multi-platinum selling band
Candlbox provided the catalyst McDermott had been waiting for. The pair released the album “Half Light Morning”
in 2011. At home in New Orleans, McDermott had teamed
up with longtime friend and Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers
guitar player David Rosser to form duo Northsouth, but the
most surprising twist of all however, lay just around the
corner in the form of NBC’s hit shot ‘The Voice’. He would
eventually finish second overall, having made the Itunes
Rock Chart Top 10 numerous times while on the show, singing to an audience of nearly 15 million people on the season
finale. The real achievement would be in early 2013 after
severing ties with the show and returning to being an independent musician. Working with Australian friend and former touring partner Todd Burman, the pair wrote an Itunes
Rock Chart number one. Solo single “Pictures” was written,
recorded, mastered and on top of the rock chart pile in less
than a week, parlaying the attention of American television
audiences into a hit with a song of true quality. McDermott
would continue to work with Burman on follow up singles
“In Your Eyes” and “Lose This Feeling”, both breaking top
20 on different ITunes Charts. The Scotsman has played sell
out shows in his home country, performed live in Ho Chi
Minh City and has taken his band “Terry McDermott & The
Bonfires” to places as varied as New York City, Belize City
and London. With the release of new single “Hi Steppin,”
the road ahead is an exciting prospect. In a further twist,
Lotus Crush have reformed to record for Cavigold Records
of Seattle, with “Pictures” producer Burman at the helm
and Grammy Award winner Mark Needham enlisted to
mix the album. The as yet untitled second record will be
released January 2015.

Mark Carrier
Keep Pounding has become a Carolina Panthers mantra in honor of late Panthers player and coach Sam
Mills. Mills first used the phrase “Keep Pounding” as
a coach, in an emotional speech to the team prior to
the Jan. 2, 2004 Panthers vs. Cowboys playoff victory.
Mills spoke about commitment, dedication to teammates, team effort and never giving up…he asked
players to “Keep Pounding.” Immediately following the
coin toss, please turn your attention to the 20-yard line
at the Southeast end of the stadium. In honor of Oct.
26, the team’s Founders Day Anniversary, today’s Keep
Pounding Drummer is former Panthers wide receiver
Mark Carrier, who now serves as the team’s Director
of Player Engagement. Carrier played 12 NFL seasons,
including four with the Panthers (1995-98). He scored
the first touchdown in Bank of America Stadium history (versus Atlanta; Sept. 1, 1996) and is fifth in team
history in receptions (176), receiving yards (2,547)
and is tied for fifth in receiving touchdowns (13).

2014 PANTHERS COACHES
RON
RIVERA
HEAD COACH
Ron Rivera was named the fourth coach in Carolina Panthers history on January 11, 2011. In 2013, his third year with the
Panthers, Rivera led Carolina to 12 wins, the NFC South division title and its first playoff appearance since 2008. After
starting the season with a 1-3 record, the Panthers won 11 of their final 12 regular season games – including a franchise
record eight-game winning streak – to secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. In recognition of that success,
Rivera was named NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Carolina’s record has improved every season under Rivera. Before joining the Panthers, Rivera served two stints as a defensive coordinator, first with the Chicago Bears from 200406 and then with the San Diego Chargers from midway through the 2008 season until the end of 2010. Rivera also coached
as an assistant with the Chargers, the Bears, and the Philadelphia Eagles. A second-round draft choice of Chicago in 1984,
Rivera played nine seasons as a linebacker with the Bears and was a member of the Super Bowl XX championship team.

PETE
CARROLL
HEAD COACH
Pete Carroll was named as Seattle’s eighth head coach on January 11, 2010. Last season, Carroll led the Seattle Seahawks to their
first Super Bowl win in franchise history after defeating the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII. Carroll began his NFL career as
defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills (1984) and Minnesota Vikings (1985-89), before becoming the New York Jets defensive
coordinator (1990-93) and head coach (1994). Carroll spent two years as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator (1995-96)
before leading the New England Patriots to a 27-21 record and two playoff appearances as head coach (1997-99). Carroll returned
to the NFL after spending nine years (2001-09) as head coach at USC, where he won seven consecutive Pac-10 titles (2002-08), two
national championships and led the Trojans to a 97-19 record.

COMBINES LUXURY
AND POWER.
THE YACHTS DO, TOO.
To add premium accommodations to the abundant power of the new 2015 Sierra Denali HD,
we took our lead from a yacht. We put a comfortable, quiet and sophisticated cabin on
top of the proven powertrain of the available Duramax 6.6L V-8 Turbo Diesel and Allison®
transmission. Over 1 million of them are on the road with over 100 billion combined
miles. Inside there’s burnished aluminum trim, a durable soft-touch instrument panel
with contrasting stitching and leather-appointed perforated front seats with dualfirmness foam. Nearly two-thirds of the cab structure is made from high-strength steel,
which contributes to its quiet cabin. All of this proves that Sierra HD is more than just a
truck. It’s incredible thinking in the form of a heavy-duty truck.
THE NEW GMC SIERRA DENALI HD. THAT’S PROFESSIONAL GRADE.

IN THE NFL: 2015 NFL DRAFT
2015 NFL Draft to be held in Chicago
The 80th NFL Draft will be held April 30-May 2, 2015 at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in
Chicago, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Oct. 2.
“We are excited to have fans from throughout the midwest experience the NFL Draft,” said Goodell. “We
look forward to returning the event to the city of Chicago and working with the city, Choose Chicago, and
the Chicago Sports Commission to create a week-long celebration of football for our fans. Mayor Emanuel
and the city of Chicago presented us with numerous ways to enhance the Draft experience for our fans and
incoming players.”
The NFL Draft was held in Chicago in 1938, 1942-44, 1951, and 1962-64.
“Chicago is pleased to welcome the 2015 NFL Draft to America’s heartland,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Next
year, NFL fans from across the country will travel here or tune in as the future of their team is decided in
Chicago. We look forward to working with the Chicago Bears, the NFL, and our neighborhood partners to
make this an event that highlights our world class city and reinvests in our communities.”
The Draft will return to primetime for Rounds 1-3. Round 1 will take place on Thursday, April 30 while
Rounds 2-3 will be held on Friday, May 1. The Draft will conclude on Saturday, May 2 with Rounds 4-7.
Round 1 festivities will include incoming prospects walking the red carpet on Michigan Avenue, while 32
former players who are members of the NFL Legends community, one representing each team, will be on
hand for Round 2 to announce selections. In addition to the event inside Auditorium Theatre, the Draft will
expand outside to Grant Park and Congress Plaza. There will be an outdoor fan festival for all three days
where fans of all teams can follow the Draft, enjoy interactive exhibits and autograph sessions with current
and former players. Tickets will be free for all fans.
The 125-year-old Auditorium Theatre opened in 1889 and has hosted operas, concerts, musicals and ballets. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley gave speeches at the theatre, which has also
hosted shows by performers such as Ray Charles, The Doors, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Frank
Sinatra and Stevie Wonder. The theatre also hosted Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera.
Coverage of the 2014 NFL Draft on NFL Network, ESPN & ESPN2 reached 45.7 million people across the three
days, topping the previous record set in 2010 (45.4 million), according to The Nielsen Company. First-round
coverage on ESPN and NFL Network drew a combined total viewership of 32.0 million viewers, making it the
most-viewed Round 1 ever, according to Nielsen. Round 1 was the most-watched program on cable and the
second most-watched program on television that Thursday night (The Big Bang Theory, CBS).

Q&A with BENÉ BENWIKERE
This week, GameTime catches up with
cornerback Bené Benwikere. A fifth-round
draft choice of the Panthers in April, Benwikere played in five games with two starts
this season before being sidelined for two
games with an ankle injury. The rookie talks
about his transition to the NFL and his experience transitioning from offense to defense in high school.
How has it been working under coaches
Steve Wilks and Curtis Fuller?
It’s been great actually, they are both guys
that have experienced the game and have
a lot of knowledge. When it comes to being
able to make plays they understand how
certain situations are going to look. When
you make presets you want something to
be done a certain way but obviously not
every situation is going to come out like
that. They are doing a good job and talking
to all of us to understand where we are and how to
adjust on the run to certain formations and plays.
How has the transition been so far as a rookie?
Are you treated as such or does it all depend on
how you treat yourself?
I would say it’s been a good transition, we have a
lot of guys in the room who talk to us and let us
know our place as a rookie. At the same time they
ultimately want the best for us whether it is from
the coaching staff or the players. They talk to us
about how to get better and get to the level that
they are at.
With a brand new secondary for the Panthers
in place this season, how is the chemistry between one another progressing both on and off
the field?
I think the veterans made a very, very big point in
understanding that we need to gel together as a
group. We do various things whether it is hanging out amongst another, watching another game,
going to go eat, or just talking to each other and
staying late watching film in the meeting room.
They show us how they watch film and we show
them how we watch it so we can pick up new
things from one another. I think that there’s been
a really good vibe and they’ve done a good job in
taking the rookies underneath their wing.
Which player has been your biggest mentor and
made the most impact on your play and your life
since becoming a Panther?
So far I would say it would be between Antoine
Cason and Roman Harper. Those are the two guys
that constantly talk to me. Like I said though everyone does a nice job of explaining things and
reaching out, but Roman Harper and Antoine Cason are definitely two guys that will see what is
going on beforehand and may say something and
may not wait until I make a mistake. They are very
constant, I hear from them at least every day.
You were a receiver at one point. How did you
end up at cornerback?
That was a transition I really didn’t like but in
high school I ended up on a team that had the top
five receivers in the nation. We had Paul Richardson (Seahawks), Marquise Lee (Jaguars), Robert
Woods (Bills), and George Farmer who’s in his
senior year now at Southern Cal. When we went
to four wide I would go out to receiver but it was a
constant grind because they knew whoever wasn’t
playing good then I was going to come in their
place and try to dominate. It was a constant battle
but that was also what made it fun even though I
didn’t like having to be strictly defense. When I got

Q&A with BENÉ BENWIKERE (continued)
to college I came across a coach named Mike McIntyre who used to coach in the NFL for a while. He
helped me understand concepts and how to really
watch film and how to break the game down as
far as the mental aspect. For my first three years
that was a big help in college and now I think my
latest transition has been being able to have good
footwork and understanding how to change up my
technique and be more physical. I had a coach
by the name of Donte Williams who really helped
me learn how to focus on the physical part of my
game as opposed to the mental side.
In college you tied the San Jose State singlegame record with three interceptions against
Louisiana Tech. What was going through your
mind during and after the game?
That game started off pretty rough for me. The
quarterback, Colby Cameron, had receivers
named Myles White and Quinton Patton. I remember we were all geared up to stop Quinton Patton
so we were putting a good clamp on him but this
guy Myles White was just winning every jump ball.
He was basically giving our whole team fits and
he almost had 200 yards in the first half alone. I
went into this depressed mode when we went into
the locker room for half time so my coach told me
I needed to get it together. When I got back out
there I was determined to not let him catch another ball. They were targeting him throughout
the game because he had a hot first half but I was
able to lock in and really focus in the second half.
He was able to catch more balls of course but
since he was targeted so much I was able to grab
three interceptions all in the second half and two
in the fourth quarter. It was a really good night
especially since we got the win and since it is all
about finishing.
What unique thing do you have about yourself
that will help connect you with the fans?
I am actually really good with kids. That was the
one thing that I really enjoyed in college, doing
child development programs and working with
kids. It is very fun for me being able to work with
kids, it is natural for me and I don’t mind being
patient with them

COACH OF THE WEEK SPOTLIGHT
Carolina Panthers
Coach of the Week
By Matt Wilbur
The Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the
Week program recognizes high school coaches
who, through their hard work and dedication to
young people, have made a difference in the
lives of their players, school and community.
This program also provides high schools with
financial assistance to help maintain and upgrade their football programs.
Jeff Calabrese
Hartsville High School
The Carolina Panthers are proud to announce
the selection of Coach Jeff Calabrese of
Hartsville (SC) High School as the team’s
seventh High School Coach of the Week for
the 2014 season. Coach Calabrese is in his
tenth year as head coach of the Red Foxes.
Coach Calabrese spent his first seven years
as an assistant under long time Hartsville
coach Lewis Lineberger. Calabrese left Hartsville to take the head coaching job at West
Florence in 2001. Before Calabrese’s arrival,
the team had a 31-game losing streak. After
two seasons under Calabrese, West Florence
advanced all the way to the state championship game in 2003. Calabrese returned
to Hartsville after being named the head
coach in 2005. The Red Foxes have won 72
percent of their games and posted an overall
record of 81-31 since Calabrese took over the
program. They have won region titles in 2010,
2012 and 2013. The team also won its fourth
state title in school history in 2012. Coach
Calabrese has earned numerous awards for
his coaching efforts including: South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association 2012-13
Coach of the Year, High School Sports Report
2012-13 State Coach of the Year, 4x Region
VI Class AAA Coach of the Year, 2003 New-
comer Coach of the Year and South Carolina
Football Coaches Association 2005 Class
AAAA Lower State Coach of the Year.
Calebrese is thankful for the support he and
his team receive and is quick to return the
favor back to the community through his off
the field efforts. The Hartsville football team
is active in the community under Calebrese’s
influence. The team holds pep rallies at local
elementary schools every home game instead
of at the high school. They are involved in
reading programs at elementary schools and
speak to the students about making positive
choices. Coach Calebrese and his players
also assist with senior citizen volunteer projects in the Hartsville area, as well organizing
regular food donations for the homeless.
In recognition of Coach Calabrese, the Carolina Panthers will donate $1,000 to Hartsville
High School to support the school’s athletic
department. Coach Calabrese and the other
2014 Carolina Panthers High School Coach of
the Week honorees will all be recognized during a Panthers home game later this season.
The 2014 High School Coach of the Week
Program is a joint initiative of the Carolina
Panthers and the National Football League.
The program is designed to recognize and
reward North and South Carolina high
school coaches who have created successful
programs for teams and players both on and
off of the playing field. This includes coaches
that champion philosophies which advance
and promote player health and safety.

MICK’S BAG by Mick Mixon
Wounded Warriors
On pace to set a franchise record for injured players in a season, the 3-3-1 Carolina Panthers chug
into today’s contest with Seattle smelling like
Bactine, Epson Salts and Ace Bandages. Early in
the week around here, players walking in from the
parking lot to the training room looked like young
versions of Fred Sanford. Our broadcast today
could easily be brought to you by Advil.
And then there is the matter of Carolina’s injured
pride and bruised ego, both listed as probable for
the game you are about to watch.
But dang man, it could be worse. A whole lot
worse. Let’s look at some reasons for optimism.
• Cam Newton, although not as precise in the
passing game last week against Green Bay,
has been in Pro Bowl form in this, his fourth
NFL season. A fierce competitor, he normally
follows indifferent performances with spectacular ones.
• Somehow or another, the Panthers are in
the Moe, Larry and Curly division so far
this year. Atlanta, New Orleans and Tampa
Bay have each trafficked with physical
comedy in September and October. Who
knows, Shemp could sneak in here and
steal this scene.
• Carolina may, in all the injury carnage, be
finding some depth. Offensive linemen David Foucault and Andrew Norwell did some
nice things at Green Bay. Receiver Brenton
Bersin could be a star in this league someday. Cornerback James Dockery can run.
Safety Tre Boston is learning quickly. Linebacker Ben Jacobs is making the most of
increased reps. Guard Chris Scott returned
to the Panthers in very good physical condition. He is strong and a mauler.
• Jonathan Stewart brought the fight to Green
Bay. “Having him back healthy means so
much, it really does,” said Coach Ron Rivera. “He’s the toughest runner I ever blocked
for,” said Jordan Gross of the Carolina Panthers Radio Network.
• All of Carolina’s preseason goals remain attainable. The only one that is off the table is
a 16-0 regular season.
• So, when you put this magazine down, get
happy and prepare to make a difference
today. What you do in the stands matters!
• Go Panthers, and we’ll see you on the radio!
• After two in a row on the road, the Panthers
are home for three of the next four. A rugged
five-game October will be followed by only
four games plus a bye week in November.

parking lots within a four block perimeter of the stadium
in order to provide information regarding the program.
Fans parking in participating lots are handed a yellow
bag for cans, bottles and/or cardboard as they enter the
lot. As fans head into the stadium, they can drop off the
