Outstanding Contributions:
Well-known Surgeon Treats Patients Like Family
It’s early on a Sunday morning and a tele-
phone ring breaks the tranquility in his
Rehoboth Beach home. Turning his attention
from his cup of tea and medical journal,
Dr. Mayer Katz answers. On the other end
of the line is one of his patients calling to ask
a question regarding his medical condition.

BEACON / OCTOBER 2015
This is a common scenario for Dr. Katz,
who gives his personal contact information
to all of his patients.
“Patients should have a lifeline, and their
vascular surgeon has to be available,” says Dr.
Katz, a vascular surgeon with Beebe Medical
Group. Dr. Katz, aware that vascular disease is
chronic, makes sure his patients receive personal attention. He lives by the three “A”s—
Availability, Affability, and Ability. In his words,
the vascular surgeon has to be there for the
patient, be able to put the patient at ease,
and be able to provide excellent care.
Dr. Katz’s calm and precise manner can

skills and expertise have served this community so well, and we look forward to
continuing to build on his tradition of excellence.”

put any patient at ease, and it also gives the
patient confidence that he is an expert in his
field. His expertise is real. Dr. Katz has treated
thousands of patients over many years. He
established the vascular program at two medical centers, including at Beebe Healthcare in
1990, and he continues to update his own
skills and knowledge as he nurtures the
growth of Beebe’s program.
“Dr. Katz has made a tremendous contribution to Beebe Healthcare and, in turn, to the
communities that we serve,” says Jeffrey M.
Fried, FACHE, President and CEO of Beebe
Healthcare. “One might consider his approach
to his patients as ‘traditional’ or ‘old-fashioned.’
But it’s precisely his personal warmth and
accessibility combined with his superb technical skills that make him such a wonderful
surgeon in our community.”
Lewes resident Patti Brown says, “Dr. Katz
genuinely cares for his patients. He certainly
saved my husband’s life. And what impresses
me most about him is that he keeps up with
the newest technologies and is always on
the cutting edge.”
Patti says she’ll never forget how Dr. Katz
spoke to her and her husband Bill about the
seriousness of Bill’s abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)—a dangerous thinning of the wall
of the major blood vessel that supplies blood
to the body. Bill’s aneurysm was so large that
it could have burst at any time. They had to
do surgery as soon as they could. That was in
2005.
“He explained everything, and then what
surprised us the most was that he showed us
his excellent outcomes for all of those procedures that he had done,” Patti recalls. “I’ve
never had a doctor do that before.”
Dr. Katz performed an endovascular stent
graft repair on Mr. Brown’s abdominal aortic
artery. This endovascular procedure takes
precision and expertise. Dr. Katz uses real-time
imaging while he inserts a catheter into a
large artery in the groin and then guides it up
to the damaged abdominal aortic artery. He
places a stent and graft into position, giving
his patient an opportunity for a healthier life.
“The sun rises and sets on Dr. Katz,” Bill
says. “I will be forever grateful to him and to
my cardiologist, Dr. [Alberto] Rosa, who found
the aneurysm.”
Bill says he has truly enjoyed getting to
know Dr. Katz over the years, and he feels confident that he is in good hands. He gets regular checkups at Dr. Katz’s office. “We hit it off,
maybe because we had both played lacrosse,
and we also have Hopkins in common.”
Bill had worked at Johns Hopkins in
Baltimore for several years. Later, he worked
at the University of Maryland, College Park,
before retiring to Lewes. Dr. Katz, a Baltimore
native, had earned his undergraduate degree
at Johns Hopkins before earning his medical

(See sidebar on page 5).
“He saved my life,” says 89-year-old Camille
Betts, a retired Beebe nurse. She recalls how
an aneurysm in her abdominal aortic artery
had ruptured just two years before.
“She was in bad shape, and Dr. Katz gave
her about a one percent chance of surviving
the surgery,” says Camille’s daughter, Connie
Walker, a nurse. “He explained to all of us
what could happen.”
Camille, still coherent in the Emergency
Department, asked her daughter if she should
have the surgery.
“I told her it was her decision,” Connie
recalls. Camille, determined she would survive,
signed the consent form.
“My family was planning my funeral,” she
says, enjoying the story of how she survived
the impossible.
“Dr. Katz is a miracle worker,” says Connie,
Dr. Katz found his passion for surgery while
still in medical school.
“As soon as I got into an OR, I knew right
away that it was my thing,” he recalls. “I was
the best one there.”
He decided to do a surgical internship at
the University of California Medical School
in San Francisco. It was there that he was
inspired by Dr. Edwin Jack Wylie, a vascular
surgeon known as a pioneering giant within
the international vascular surgery community.
Dr. Katz still cherishes his books and remembers his words.
Dr. Katz then went to Boston City Hospital
for his residency, where he and his wife Nancy
met and later married. Dr. Katz still remembers
the day he caught his first glimpse of her
when she was a student nurse in the operating room. They have been together ever since.
Dr. Katz was drafted as soon as he completed his residency. He served as a captain
and surgeon in the U.S. Army Mobile Army
Surgical Hospital (MASH) program in Vietnam.
“You didn’t train in Vietnam, you just did it,”
Dr. Katz says.
Dr. Katz’s passion became a coveted skill
as the brutal war raged in the jungles. For six
of the 13 months in 1967 and 1968 that he
was there, he also served in a U.S. Marines
MASH unit deep in the jungle, where he was
under fire continually. He operated, repairing
soldiers’ bleeding bodies—torn from gunshot wounds and shrapnel from explosions.
His steady hands built new blood vessels,
bypassed destroyed arteries, and repaired
slivered bones and mangled tissue. Surgeries
lasted from two to five hours. Dr. Katz finished
one surgery and went on to the next.
One story stands out. With a battle raging,
Dr. Katz was called to remove a live grenade
lodged in a soldier’s cheek. The grenade could
have exploded at any minute. His surgery was

FELLOWSHIP-TRAINED VASCULAR
SURGEONS JOIN DR. KATZ IN
VASCULAR SERVICES PRACTICE
Vascular surgeons Carlos Neves, MD, and Sean Ryan, MD,
have joined Mayer Katz, MD, in Beebe Vascular, the only specialized
vascular practice in southern Delaware. It has offices in Lewes, Ocean
View, Millsboro, and Milford and is part of Beebe Medical Group.

a success, and news of it spread. Nancy was
living in Boston with their two children at
the time. When her father called her about
a story on the front page of the Globe, she
had to find a copy. What she saw was a photograph of her husband and the story on the
front page. For that remarkable surgery, U.S.
Army 22nd Surgical Hospital Commanding
Officer LTC Robert Stanek presented Dr. Katz
with the Soldiers Award for exemplary service.
All in all, he operated on 375 wounded
and near-death soldiers, and of those, eight
died. He remembers every patient and has
documented all of their stories. Today, he and
Nancy, a professional writer, are working on a
book about the experience.
As a seasoned vascular surgeon following
Vietnam, Dr. Katz’s first job was to establish a
vascular program at Beloit Memorial Hospital
in Beloit, Wisconsin. At the same time, Nancy,
who had already had a degree in nursing,
earned another in creative writing from Beloit
College.
ARRIVING IN COASTAL DELAWARE
Dr. Katz was recruited in 1989 to come to
Beebe to establish a Vascular Services program. He and Nancy discussed the opportunity. By then, their grown children had returned
to the East Coast. They decided to visit the
area and see what they thought.
“We liked it immediately,” Nancy says. “And
people were so friendly.”
They met members of the leadership of
Beebe, including Dr. James Beebe, Jr. and his
wife Betty Mann Beebe. The couple arrived in
1990, and Dr. Katz began work on developing
Dr. Neves earned his medical degree at the

residency at Temple University Hospital in
Philadelphia, and his fellowship in Vascular
and Endovascular Surgery at Cooper University
Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. He is a member of the American
College of Surgeons and the Society for Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Katz brought an experienced vascular team with him from Wisconsin when he established the
Vascular Services program at Beebe in 1990. He is pictured here in 2000 with vascular nurse Lynn Amey.
Today, Mrs. Amey is Executive Director of Cardiac and Vascular Services at Beebe.
WHAT IS VASCULAR DISEASE?
The heart pumps blood to the body through a system of vessels
called the circulatory system. Arteries carry the oxygen-rich blood
from the heart, and the veins carry it back again.
Vascular disease is disease of these vessels, as well as of those
in the lymphatic system, which is a system intertwined with the
circulatory system that removes liquid from the tissues in the
body and carries it to the circular system.
The most common vascular disease in the United States is
hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which occurs when
plaque builds up on the artery walls and interrupts the normal
flow of blood and oxygen to the body. Organs in the body can
be damaged when they do not receive enough blood, and
atherosclerosis can lead to heart attack and stroke.
There are other common vascular diseases and conditions,
including:
• Aneurysm (a ballooning of the vessel wall which may lead to
rupture or a hole within the artery)
• Blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) that can travel into
the lung and cause a pulmonary embolism
• Peripheral venous (vein) disease, when the valves in the veins are
damaged so the blood is unable to return effectively to the heart
• Blood clotting disorders
• Lymphedema, when the lymphatic system is damaged or not
working properly, which can cause swelling, discomfort, and
recurring infections
a vascular program.
“It is a complicated
process,” Dr. Katz says,
explaining that Beebe
needed a specialized
vascular staff and the
people and technologies to establish the
necessary testing and
treatment programs.
It took detailed planning and knowledge.
He invited a team
from Beebe to visit
Beloit to see the program there. Dr. Katz
also brought some of
his experienced team with him from
Wisconsin, including vascular nurse Lynn
Amey, who today is Executive Director of
the Beebe Healthcare Cardiac and Vascular
Services program.
Nancy, meanwhile, had struck up a friendship with Betty Mann Beebe, and the two
worked tirelessly to establish fundraising
activities for Beebe, such as Beebe’s Thanksgiving Ball and the annual tree-lighting ceremony. Nancy also began writing for the newly
established Cape Gazette newspaper, and she
continues to do so. She also developed her
passion for watercolors, which led to her
People who smoke, who are overweight, and who live a sedentary
lifestyle are at risk for vascular disease caused by atherosclerosis.
Also people with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and
diabetes are at risk. While it is very important to control all of
these factors, it is necessary to understand that one risk factor
that cannot be controlled is heredity, which can play a major
role. Trauma, the removal of lymph nodes, and cancer surgery
and radiation treatment can result in lymphedema.
Vascular surgeons specialize in treating patients with
these diseases and conditions, even when surgery is
not indicated.

They both enjoy getting together with
friends, attending local events, seeing familiar
faces around town, and visiting with their
children and grandchildren. For Dr. Katz, his
passion remains his patients—and knowing
that he is making a difference in their lives.
“The legacy of Dr. Katz’s contributions to
his patients is immeasurable,” says Jeff Fried.

this community so well, and we look forward
to continuing to build on his tradition of
excellence.”
ADVANCED NURSING EDUCATION
Students Gain Critical Knowledge
and Experience at Hospital-based
Nursing School
Forty-eight students entered the etched-
glass doors of the Margaret H. Rollins School
of Nursing at Beebe Healthcare in August,
marking the culmination of years of planning
for the school’s expansion and the beginning
of a new era in nursing education for southern
Delaware.
“We are proud of the Margaret H. Rollins
School of Nursing and how it has continued
to advance education and clinical experience
since its beginnings in 1921,” says Program
Administrator Karen Pickard, MSN, RN, CNE.
“Today, we also are excited to start the first
semester in our modernized and expanded
facility. We look forward to continuing to pre-
pare our students to give compassionate
and expert care to their patients in an everchanging healthcare environment.”
In July, Beebe Healthcare completed
the $10 million construction project on the
school, located on Beebe’s main campus in
Lewes. Visitors poured in as the school was
open for tours and festivities. The new, threestory, 18,000-square-foot building houses
the latest in nursing education technologies,
including computerized medical-simulation
manikins that open and close their eyes, move
their chests as they breathe, and even moan
and bleed. These wireless manikins look like
people and can be programmed to produce

in childbirth. Video cameras are positioned
above each manikin so the student nurses can
be filmed as they participate in patient-care
scenarios. These films, and how the students
responded, are then discussed by student
groups and faculty.
“The manikins are an excellent way for students to learn new skills,” says Joan Thomas,
RN, MS, FACHE, Vice President, Clinical &
Ambulatory Services for Beebe Healthcare.
“Students are able to practice high-anxiety
skills in a safe environment. They don’t have to
worry about hurting a patient while they are
learning. They can learn to recognize and evaluate the symptoms and how to react quickly.”

ries, an expanded library and student space,
seminar rooms, and administrative offices.
“As a hospital-based school, we also can
offer our students more opportunity for clinical experience and to observe the latest procedures being performed by Beebe’s Medical
Staff,” Mrs. Pickard points out. “We in healthcare are facing a situation in which the
patients being admitted into the hospital are
seriously ill, often with multiple problems, and
nurses have to be prepared. Consequently,
medical advances are being seen at the local
level, and we see them at Beebe.”
These increasing demands in patient care
and the ongoing advances in medicine have
meant that the school is continually revising
its curriculum as it meets the requirements
of the accrediting body, The Accreditation
Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
Educational standards are raised continually.
As part of their clinical experience, students also observe patient care in physician
offices, at a mental health facility, and at a
school that cares for children with special
needs.
“We have created a more collaborative
approach to improve our students’ critical
thinking and decision making,” says Mrs.
Pickard. Instead of just traditional lectures, the
students and faculty have discussions and the
students do their own research into evidencebased practices. In turn, they recently had the
opportunity to present their findings to Beebe
nurses at educational programs, offering the
students another opportunity to advance
their knowledge and to collaborate with experienced medical staff. All faculty members at
the school also teach in the clinical setting,
enabling them to maintain clinical expertise
and the ability to stay current with policies
and procedures.
“This way our students know that faculty
remain current and are experts in their field,”
Mrs. Pickard says. “They also know that their
education is meaningful and preparing them
for the real world.”
Graduates of Margaret H. Rollins School
of Nursing have continually performed well
when they have taken their state board to
become registered nurses. For example, of the
16 students that graduated this past spring,
15 passed the difficult examination the first
time around.
The students also have the opportunity,
through partnerships with the University of
Delaware and Wilmington University, to earn
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing.
Students started school in August in the new facility. The modern classrooms offer students the opportunity for an advanced education.
Pictured here are senior students participating in a lecture with nurse educator Terri Wyatt, MSN, RNC, GC-C, CPLC, CNE.

A Community Supports Nursing Education
This past summer, it was with a sense of
joy, pride, and true accomplishment that so
many people welcomed the completion of
the $10 million construction and renovation
project of the Margaret H. Rollins School of
Nursing at Beebe Healthcare. Many attended
the Open House, where students and faculty
proudly led tours of the beautiful facility.
The funds to build and equip the school
came from many individuals, school of nursing alumni, businesses, foundations, as well
as from state and federal funds.
“We are grateful to the Rollins family and
so many donors who contributed so generously to Beebe,” says Judy Aliquo, President
and CEO of the Beebe Medical Foundation,
the fundraising arm of Beebe Healthcare.
“We now have a building that matches the

excellent, advanced nursing program offered
at Beebe. With the new facility, we are also
able to increase the number of nursing students, which will help to meet the growing
need in southern Delaware.”
HOW THE NEW BUILDING CAME TO BE
By the year 2000, it was evident that The
School of Nursing at Beebe, which had been
established in 1921, needed another renovation and new technologies if it was to keep
up with the needs of a growing community.
Dreams began to form of a modern facility
that would replace the 1960s-era building
that the school had outgrown.
By 2011, Beebe Medical Foundation’s
Nursing Education Campaign was under
way to raise the millions of dollars necessary
to turn the dream into a reality. One of the
first gifts was from the Beebe Auxiliary, which
eventually donated over $600,000. Major
donors also included Warren (Ren) Allen, Jr.,
from Seaford, and Joe Hudson, for whom
Beebe’s last major expansion that included
the Emergency Department was named.
Many friends of Beebe continued to respond
with contributions. Then, in an exciting
moment in July 2011, it was announced that
the MA-RAN Foundation had donated a lead
gift of $3 million. The MA-RAN Foundation
was established by R. Randall Rollins and
Margaret (Peggy) Rollins, of Atlanta, Georgia.
Peggy (formerly Peggy Hastings) was born
at Beebe Hospital and, as a teenager, worked
there after school and on Saturdays. Peggy
also is a past member of the Beebe Medical
Foundation Board. In honor of the generous gift, the school was named after her.
Fundraising continued until December 2013
when, just before the groundbreaking, Joe
Schell and his family donated a wonderful
gift that completed the campaign.

IMMEDIATELY ESTABLISHING A BOND

operating room immediately after the C-section was performed,
a practice shown to benefit baby’s overall health.

Skin-to-Skin: An Important
Connection for Mom and Baby
For new parents, there is nothing better than
snuggling up with their warm, sweet-smelling
baby. As it turns out, skin-to-skin snuggling is
actually beneficial for mom and baby.
At birth, infants are thrust into a new environment with lights and noises that they previously never experienced. This stressful experience, while important to induce breathing
and introduce infants to their new world, can
also cause infants to cry and feel insecure. This
is why the mother’s warm touch and temperature are especially important immediately
after birth.
A mother’s body is able to regulate her
temperature and the temperature of the baby.
In addition, having the baby on the mother’s
chest allows the baby to first suckle and latch
on to begin breastfeeding.
Studies have shown that skin-to-skin
contact within the first few weeks increases
breastfeeding success and increases brain
function. It also helps normalize the baby’s
blood sugar, breathing, and heart rate, says
Nancy Hastings, RN, IBCLC, Beebe Healthcare’s
Lactation Consultant.
“Babies should be on mom’s chest, skin-toskin, immediately after birth and until after
the first feeding. Then they should have regular skin-to-skin contact with mom for the first
few weeks,” Hastings says. “This is a process
that Beebe fully supports by allowing moms
to hold their babies skin-to-skin right after
birth, even mothers who have C-sections.”
Beth and Justin Illian, of Georgetown,
had their second daughter, Vivian, at Beebe
Healthcare in July. This was their second
child born at Beebe, but the first time Beth
was able to hold their daughter right after
the C-section.
“It was such an amazing experience. There
wasn’t any waiting to see or hold Vivian. She
was just there immediately, and I think it
calmed us both down during the recovery,”
says Beth.
In addition to creating the mother-child
bond earlier, allowing skin-to-skin touch right
after a C-section, and also after vaginal birth,
helps the mother’s milk come in more quickly,
Hastings says.
As the first BabyFriendly™ Hospital in
Delaware, Beebe brings
optimal healthcare to all
babies.
“Babies who receive
skin-to-skin touch on a
regular basis are less likely to cry because they
feel comforted and cared for,” says Hastings.
“It’s a primal instinct for babies to want to be
snuggled up against their parents because
that is where they feel safe and secure. Human
touch is key.”

Baby-Friendly Hospital designation or
Women’s Health Services at Beebe, go to

Part of Beebe’s Baby-Friendly™ program allows mothers to have skin-to-skin contact with
their newborns no matter whether those newborns are vaginal or C-section births. Beth
Illian had her second child during a routine C-section in July. About five minutes after baby
Vivian was born, Beth was holding her skin-to-skin on her chest. This important connection ensures a healthier outcome for the baby and less stress for mother and baby.

Auxiliary
Preparing to celebrate its 80th anniversary year, the Beebe Auxiliary is the oldest fundraising arm of Beebe. Through its membership of hundreds of dedicated members volunteering an average
of over 31,000 hours a year at the Beebe Thrift Shop (Treasure Chest)
on Highway One, the Medical Center Gift Shop, and other events, the
Auxiliary makes a donation towards the purchase of a major capital
equipment need each year. This year the Auxiliary donated $275,000
towards the purchase of navigational bronchoscopy, a technology that
will allow physicians to evaluate the lungs and collect small tissue samples to diagnose lung disease and treat patients. Lung cancer is the
leading cancer killer in both men and women in the United States.

Longwood Foundation generously contributed $750,000 for the purchase of a new
PET/CT scan. Positron emission tomography (PET) and computerized tomography (CT) are both state-of-theart imaging tools that allow physicians to pinpoint the location of cancer within the body
before making treatment recommendations. In
addition, Beebe Medical Foundation received
generous support from the Crestlea Foundation,
Crystal Trust, and Marmot Foundation to fund
this new machine located on our Route 24
Health Campus.
Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing
Over 1,200 alumni, faculty, Beebe team members and donors contributed $8 million to build the new Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing, which officially opened July
24, 2015. For almost 95 years, Beebe has educated nurses to serve our local community. Donations can still be made towards
the purchase of equipment or designated to the Scholarship Fund.
“Through our partnership with the Foundation, the School of Nursing was able to open its doors to a brand-new state-of-the-art facility
in 2015. Due to many years of efforts in fundraising by the Beebe Foundation, the dream of having a new school has finally come to
fruition. The Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing now has the capability of increasing student enrollment and providing students with
an education using the most advanced technologies. This will benefit the community and Sussex County by providing more graduate
nurses who are well prepared to enter today’s healthcare arena.” — Karen Pickard, MSN, RN, CNE, Program Administrator at the
Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing

Shaw Society
In 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Shaw were responsible for the first major philanthropic gift to Beebe Healthcare, which supported the construction
and furnishing of a 35-bed medical facility, modern for its time. The Shaw building currently stands as the historic centerpiece of our Savannah Road
Campus. Members of the Shaw Society remember Beebe in their will, estate planning, or by establishing a planned gift or endowment.
This year, we are honored to receive a most generous gift to fund scholarships for nurses who attend the Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing.
The Estate of Margaret F. Moore donated $590,386 to create an endowment that will leave a lasting legacy for Margaret and will provide income
for scholarships in perpetuity.

Endowments
An endowment is a fund that is made up of gifts and bequests
that are subject to a requirement that the principal be
maintained intact and invested to create a source of income
for a designated department or service line. An endowment
requires that the principal remains intact in perpetuity, for
a defined period of time, or until sufficient assets have been
accumulated to achieve a designated purpose. Endowments
with the Beebe Medical Foundation can be established with
an initial $25,000 contribution.

1916 Club
Founded in 1916, Beebe Healthcare is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2016. Excellent patient care is only possible with your generous support.
To mark this significant milestone, we have created a new leadership giving club—the 1916 Club. Members of the 1916 Club receive distinct benefits such as advance invitations to Beebe Medical Foundation events, unique gifts of 1916 lapel pin and car magnet, special recognition on Donor
Wall, and many more. We invite you to join by donating a gift of $1,916 or more to the Annual Fund. This year 122 members of our local community
joined the 1916 Club. Their generous contributions raised over $355,000 for Beebe Healthcare.
Our Annual Fund is from July 1 to June 30 each year. Thank you for your consideration in joining this annual giving society—the 1916 Club. Your
gift will help save and change lives daily at Beebe Healthcare.

Summer Friends
Celebrate Excellent Care
Beebe Healthcare’s “Summer Friends” program supports the various services available through Beebe
Healthcare’s Emergency services. We ask Summer Friends to contribute $500 or more annually. Your gift
will go directly to the Emergency Department Restricted Fund. With a growing population and increasing
number of patients using our Emergency Department, your gift will give us the ability to continue advancing
our technology and services. This year 33 members donated over $15,000.
There are many ways to say “Thank you!” We are taught at a young age to
say thank you to others who have been kind to us, who have given us an
opportunity or gift, or who have simply always been there for us when we
are in need of help. The Beebe Medical Foundation, the fundraising arm of
Beebe Healthcare, is proud to announce a new program, Celebrating Excellent
Care, which invites community members to consider thanking a Beebe team
member (doctor, nurse, staff) with an appreciation certificate and monetary
gift given in their honor.

Memorial Gifts
Many families have donations sent in memory of their loved ones, in lieu of flowers, to a designated fund or
department that cared for their loved one at Beebe or to the department where their family member volunteered their services, such as Gull House, Cardiology, Tunnell Cancer Center, Emergency Department. The
Foundation informs families of all memorial gifts and sends donors an official thank-you and tax information
letter for their records.
Beebe received memorial donations in excess of $23,000 in memory of the following loved ones who designated Beebe to receive donations. May they rest in peace.

Every day at Beebe’s seven
locations countywide, countless
grateful patients talk about their
excellent experiences, extraordinary care, and compassion they
have been shown by Beebe team
members. This new and exciting
program invites grateful patients
to celebrate this quality care by
sharing their story with others.
Research has shown that saying
thank you for changing or
saving one’s life helps complete
the healing process. It allows a
grateful patient to be in control
again and creates a sense of new
life and happiness. In an article
published by Harvard Health Publications, the authors put it quite
succinctly: “Saying thank you
may be one of the simplest ways
to feel happier” (The Harvard
Mental Health Letter, November
2011). Other studies have suggested that frequent charitable
giving may protect patients from
the onset of new health issues
when faced with a new stressor
(Poulin, 2013). This new program
provides a way to say thank you.

Events
The Beebe Medical Foundation events are a wonderful opportunity each year to “fund-raise” and “friend-raise.” Many supporters, local businesses, and corporations invest in our events by sponsoring at different levels. Every
Beebe Medical Foundation event focuses on raising the necessary funds for specific needs at Beebe Healthcare. Our events would not be a success without the countless volunteers who chair committees, assist with mailings,
solicit auction gifts, and help set up, clean up, and work our events! We have over 300 volunteers working throughout the year. Our volunteer leadership is listed below each event. We could not possibly list all our volunteers
by name; it would be pages! Thank you to all our volunteers who help make our Foundation events so successful!
27th Annual Beebe Ball
The Orient Express held on November 1, 2014, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center
Every year the Beebe Ball is the signature event and highlight of the fall season. This elegant evening includes an extended cocktail hour, silent and live auctions, trip raffle, fine food and
top-shelf beverages, dancing, and fabulous décor. This year’s theme was the Orient Express and featured a replica of the dining car of the Orient Express with a dinner menu featuring all
the stops along the railway and picturesque scenery from the actual route. All the money raised from the Ball (over $150,000) helped fund the purchase of new 3D mammography for
Beebe’s Women’s Imaging Department at the Route 24 Health Campus.
“Generous donors this past year have supported multiple efforts to bring new technology to Sussex County: Tomosynthesis, which is 3D mammography, and PET/CT imaging, which is a combination of two
very expensive technologies, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT). Our 3D mammography program has been hugely successful. We have seen multiple cases where a
cancer would not have been found without the 3D images and have been able to prevent unnecessary biopsies for women who have a ‘suspicious’ finding on 2D mammograms. This past year we have
raised over $1.3 million to support new and improved technologies for Sussex County. Thanks to the Foundation’s efforts, Beebe was the first to bring 3D mammography to our community, and that has
made a positive change in many women’s lives. Our radiologists have been able to find small breast cancers that may well have been missed with standard mammography. We have also been able to accept
women who had 2D images at other centers complete 3D imaging and prevent unnecessary biopsies.“ —Dan Mapes, Director of Diagnostic Services

“What an honor to have partnered with the Foundation for the Holiday of Life. Through that partnership we were able to raise a generous amount of money from the community to purchase new

This year the traditional Holiday of Lights tree lighting ceremony was
expanded into a luminarie ceremony with a focus on celebrating life.
Lighted luminarie bags bedecked the front yard of the Medical Center,
representing loved ones to be remembered in a special way. This year the money raised ($22,000) went
towards the purchasing of all new rocking chairs and bassinets for our Women’s Health Department Labor
and Delivery Suite.

Beebe Beach Bash
June 6, 2015
The NEW Beebe Beach Bash was held at the Lewes Ferry Terminal. This
new event welcomed 650 people to the Ferry pier, terminal, and on board
the “Delaware” Ferry. Featuring three different ticket levels and parties,
the evening was accessible to all levels of supporters and truly was a bash!
It was the biggest party of the summer. An evening full of entertainment, casino games, silent and live
auctions, great food, music, and dancing made this a signature event. All the money raised (over $100,000)
went towards the Emergency Department.
“We appreciate the ongoing support from our growing community.
We have been able to move forward with purchasing a hospitalwide tracking board to improve patient flow throughout the
organization. Soon we will have a real-time capability to track the
status of every patient throughout the organization to ensure more
timely care. It will also enhance the communication amongst the
many departments that interact with each patient on a daily
basis. Thank you!” —Kevin Bristowe, MD

The Beebe Medical Foundation Charitable Golf Series
This series features four golf outings that all support Beebe’s Tunnell Cancer Center. Over the years, these golf outings have gained strong support
from area golfers and sponsors and sell out quickly. It is truly amazing
to think that four golf outings with over 500 players combined raise
approximately $130,000 or more each year for the Tunnell Cancer Center.
Michael A. Ruddo Golf Outing is held every year at the Ocean City Golf
Club on the Newport Bay Course. This year was the 7th year the Ruddo
Family has gathered family and
friends in memory of Mike Ruddo,
father and husband, to raise money
for the Michael A. Ruddo Endowment held by the Beebe Medical Foundation. This past year, $10,000 was raised at the annual outing, and the
Beebe Medical Foundation Board of Directors matches this gift.
Baywood Golf Classic is held
every year at Baywood Greens.
This was a special anniversary
year as the outing has raised
funds for 10 years! Due to
inclement weather the tournament was postponed from June
3, 2015, to Monday, August 23,
2015. This year the Baywood
Golf Classic raised $40,000, the
highest amount in its history.

Progress for Prostate Golf Tournament was held at Cripple Creek Country Club on Thursday, June 25,
2015. This annual outing has gained momentum and grown in the past few years. Not only does this outing
feature a golf day but also a magic show the evening before hosted by Richard Bloch from Dickens Parlour
Theatre. In addition to the magic
show dinner and golf outing,
a dine and donate night was
held at Hooked Up, sponsored
by Steve Hagan. Also, this year
Hockers Supermarkets accepted
donations at their locations.
Over $45,000 was raised through
these efforts to provide free
prostate cancer screening
throughout Sussex County.
“It has been my pleasure to
lead the Progress for Prostate
Golf Tournament, along with
a great team of volunteers,
for the benefit of Beebe
Healthcare’s Tunnell Cancer
Center’s Free Prostate Cancer
Screening and Men’s Health
Awareness Program.
Donations to this event, held
at the Cripple Creek Golf &
Country Club in Dagsboro, over
the past 12 years have totaled
approximately $285,000 and
have enabled the Tunnell Cancer Center to purchase a van to transport qualified male candidates for
this important service that saves lives. Prostate cancer takes the lives of nearly 30,000 men each year.
As a prostate cancer survivor myself, it is nice to see such widespread community support for this
great hospital and their strong community-based programs.”
— Drew Sunderlin, Chairman/Progress for Prostate Golf Tournament
JEAN & JOAN FUND Golf Outing was held on September 29, 2014.
This event was sponsored by Kings Creek Country Club. This 15th anniversary year featured special recognition to Beebe’s Tunnell Cancer Team,
and a recognition award was given to Kathy Cooke, nurse navigator, for
her exemplary service. In addition, founder James Martin, Jr. was recognized for his 15 years of service and commitment. This year $35,000 was
raised and matched by the Jean & Joan Fund, resulting in $70,000 being donated towards the purchase of 3D
mammography for Beebe’s Women’s Imaging Department.
“Through our annual golf tournament, the Jean & Joan Fund has been able to support cancer
patient care at Beebe’s Tunnell Cancer Center since 1999. Our tournament is held locally, run by local
volunteers, and all proceeds go to help local cancer patients. Our partnership with Beebe Medical
Foundation enables us to make
a difference in the lives of those
fighting—and in many cases
winning—their battles with
cancer.”
— Vicki Tull, Co-Chair of

A Century of Care . . . We will always be there!
For almost a century, Beebe Healthcare has served the community with great care and compassion. As we embark upon our Centennial year many exciting projects and events are being planned to celebrate this milestone.
For several months now, more than 200 dedicated volunteers have joined Beebe professionals to document the history of Beebe, make plans to recognize our valuable supporters, and join together with our community
to celebrate our next 100 years! The 100th Anniversary celebration officially began on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, in front of the Shaw Building at the main campus in Lewes, with an Historic Marker Unveiling and
Reception. For more information about the 100th Anniversary and to check out our newly launched online store, featuring Limited Edition 100th Anniversary apparel and gifts, visit www.beebehce.org/100thAnniversary.
“This is a very exciting time for our community—celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Beebe, started by Drs. Richard and James Beebe in 1916. It is a privilege to be part of the Steering Committee and work
with the dedicated staff of Beebe to share the history and stories of the growth of our community hospital. The decision to participate in the 1916 campaign is a natural one, as this contributes to the continued growth of Beebe for the years to come. We will all need the services provided by Beebe at some point in our lives, and supporting the advancement of medicine in our area is crucial as the number of
people who move to our lovely beach towns increases. I have learned so much by being involved in the 100th Anniversary preparation and hope others will take advantage of the opportunities available
to them to learn from the history of Beebe and be a part of the future.” —Benedette Cooper, 100th Anniversary Event Co-Chair and Ambassador

“As a volunteer through the Beebe Foundation I have had the opportunity to raise funds over several years to enhance the services provided to our community. We have collaboratively raised funds for
a linear excellerator for the Tunnell Cancer Center, the new School of Nursing, Women’s Health, and most recently the 3D mammography for the Route 24 campus, to name a few. The availability of
3D mammography allows for improved accuracy in diagnosis and ultimately saves lives with this advanced technology. Working with the Foundation supports the growth of healthcare today and
in the future. I value the opportunity to make a difference for our community.” —Benedette Cooper, Ambassador
