Letters to the Editor
You Should Vote, Really
In the election of 2008 Tom Perriello
won by a handful of votes. This year, if
Congressman Perriello wins by 1 vote,
I'll know it was mine. If he wins by 2
votes, I'll know it was yours. If he wins
by 3 votes, we will know that we did it.
If you think your vote doesn't count,
just look at the signs in the community
and see which way the wind blows. We
have the opportunity to prove the polls
wrong, and to give the Progressive
agenda a chance. I'm proud to be a
Democrat, Liberal or Progressive - call
it what you will. Progessives, by the
way, are responsible for: ending child
labor, weekends, voting rights, minimum wage, cleaning up meat packing
plants & regulating food & drugs, the
GI Bill - then and now -- unemployment insurance, Medicare ( despite
Haley Barbour and the Republican
claim to the contrary), integration in
the South, the League of Nations and
the United Nations, the Peace Corp ...
Shall I go on?
Get out and vote.
It is the most
important thing you can do this election season.
Deborah Nixon

Perriello Desperate
I am getting tired of seeing the
numerous dishonest ads put forth by
an obviously desperate Perriello campaign. One would think by listening
to them that State Senator Robert Hurt
is the powerful and corrupt
Washington
insider,
while
Congressman Perriello is the underdog
outsider who wants to change
Washington. A magician calls this misdirection. But as Abraham Lincoln
famously said, “You can fool some of
the people all of the time, and all of the
people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the
time.” All the polls indicate that the
misdirection coming from Rep.
Perriello is not able to fool the people
of the 5th district a second time.
Perriello ran the first time as a centrist
Democrat, a pragmatist, who would
represent 5th district values. But he
can’t honestly do that this time, and so
he attacks his opponent in the most
deceptive ways, hoping that we will
forget that he voted with Nancy Pelosi
for the unholy trinity of bills that will
bankrupt our nation: the stimulus, cap
and trade, and Obamacare. We were
told the $789 billion dollar spending
spree would prevent unemployment
from rising above 8%. It has been
above 9% for some time. The truth
about Obamacare is worse. In
September a report from the Center for
Medicare and Medicaid Services
revised its estimates—again revealing
that Obamacare will mean more health
care spending, not less. Tom wants to
scare us from voting for Hurt, but we’re
already scared about Tom’s own admission. As he so famously said, “If you
don't tie our hands, we'll keep stealing.” Let’s tie his hands this November.

Columbia Sends Thanks
Many thanks to all who attended the
Sept. 25 bar-b-queue in the Town of
Columbia. It was great to see the four
churches located in the Town work to
promote fellowship. The food was
wonderful, the children enjoyed the
activites and many new friendships
were formed. I hope this is the first of
many joint events in the future!

point of paying a full time economic development coordinator?” – from

Lake Monticello to Fix Breached Pond
BY CARLOS SANTOS
EDITOR
A leak at the one-acre pond in The
Acres section of Lake Monticello has
dropped the water level by 75%, creating concern among homeowners worried about property values, safety and
the pond’s aquatic life.
The Lake Monticello Homeowner’s
Association said they would repair the
retention pond, though it might take
some time.
Cindy Calhoun, a homeowner who
lives in a house adjacent to the pond,
said, "It's a silty mess...it smells like
dried algae and dead fish." She said the
shallow end of the usually 12-foot deep
pond has no water and the deep end
has between four to five feet of water.
Calhoun said homeowners have
complained to Lake Monticello authorities since January about a leak in the
overflow pipe. Calhoun said no repairs
have yet been made.
The LMOA said in a prepared statement released Oct. 5, that “In April of
this year, the Acres spillway developed
a slow leak, causing the water level to
drop by as much as two feet at times.
Upon close inspection, it was discovered that an area of rust along the
underwater spillway assembly had
become perforated, allowing water to
pass through. Immediate action was
taken to block the leak as a temporary
fix while a permanent resolution could
be found. No one could foresee the
heavy rains that fell last week, causing
the temporary fix to give way, the leak
to widen and most of the water to drain
from the pond.”
The LMOA also said in the statement
that “LMOA consulted with the engineer on the original pond project to
assist in development of an appropriate
design and work plan. The engineer
also will inspect the dam this week to
assure it was not damaged by the
recent event. Contractor bids for the
required work are due not later than
October 15. Once the LMOA Board of
Directors accepts a bid, work will get
underway as soon as possible thereafter.” (The entire statement can be
read at FluvannaReview.com)
Calhoun said homeowners awoke
Oct. 1 to find a dramatic drop in the
water level. "Now there's a huge hole at
the end of the pond." Calhoun
expressed concern not only about the
odor and appearance of the once beautiful pond, but also about the survival
of its fish – which includes catfish, bass
and sunfish. "Some of the smaller fish
have perished," she said.
Richard Ramos, another homeowner
whose house fronts the pond, said “the
pond is clearly a safety hazard at this
point due to the dam itself collapsing.
Bottom sludge is now exposed which
in some areas is more than a foot deep
and a stench is now emanating from
the area. At present, the pond looks like
a mud pit. There's very little water left
along with the dying and already dead
fish.”
Ramos said the water drop is due to
a rusting overflow pipe that allows
water to leak out. He also said the
LMOA “has known about this situation
since January and did contact a few
engineering firms but clearly didn't
give the situation the urgency it
deserved. When you have a dam which
it's integrity is in question, you mark
that with a high priority and move to
correct it. What happened to the Acres
pond was a result of 'foot dragging'”.
“We want this facility repaired and
brought back to its original condition,”
Ramos said. “Having a mud pit in back
of your house not only reduces the
value of your home in this already
depressed real-estate market, but it
also poses a health hazard…due to
mosquito infestation along with the
stench. I'd also imagine that wild life
could become trapped in the deep
sludge.
The pond built about 11 years ago, is
the centerpiece of the 58 home neighborhood.

Fluvanna News Briefs
Fluvanna Earns a High,
On-Time Graduation Rate
Fluvanna’s on-time graduation rate
increased from 88.2 percent in 2009
to 90.6 percent in 2010 and is higher
than the state’s rate at 85.5 percent,
according to school officials. In the
surrounding area, only Louisa,
Madison, and Albemarle counties
surpassed Fluvanna’s graduation rate.
The Fluvanna dropout rate at 5.2
percent, down from 5.9 percent in
2009, is also lower than the state’s
average of 8.2 percent.
Fluvanna’s 2010 dropout rate is the
third lowest in the area; only Madison
and Goochland had a lower dropout
rate, according to figures released
Thursday by the Virginia Department
of Education. This is the lowest
dropout rate recorded by Fluvanna
since the state began computing the
on-time graduation rate three years
ago. The dropout rate for Fluvanna’s
black students declined by 7.81 percent.
The Virginia Department of
Education (VDOE) released state-
level, division-level, and school-level
cohort reports that detail outcomes
for students who entered the ninth
grade for the first time in 2006 and
were scheduled to graduate in the
spring of 2010. More information is
available at the VDOE website.
Of the 308 students who began
Fluvanna County High School as
freshmen, 279, or 90.58 percent,
earned a Board of Educationapproved diploma.Of these on-time
graduates 157, or 56.27 percent,
earned an advanced studies diploma;
101, or 36.20 percent, earned a standard diploma; 18, or 6.45 percent,
earned a modified standard diploma;
1.08 percent earned a special diploma.
The 90.58 percent on-time graduation rate is the highest recorded by
Fluvanna since the state began
reporting this data. Fluvanna surpassed the previous year’s rates in all
subgroups with the exception of students with disabilities. In this subgroup, 9.1 percent earned a GED
which is not included in the on-time
graduation rate calculation.

A Pleasing Day at Pleasant Grove
BY CARLOS SANTOS
EDITOR
It was a good day at Old Farm Day.
Under bright skies, highlighted by a light,
cool breeze, some 5,000 people trooped into
Pleasant Grove on Saturday, Oct. 2 to relive
the way farmers used to farm.
“Everybody just really had a good time,’’
said Susan Swales, the co-chair of Old Farm
Day. “We got lots of positive feedback.
Everybody just really enjoyed the day.”
Most of the visitors were from Fluvanna
County, though some hailed from
Charlottesville and Albemarle and Louisa
counties. But “we tried to keep it local this
year,’’ said Swales. “We didn’t want to deal
with 10,000 people. We’re really pleased
with the 5,000 who came.’’
Old Farm Day, Fluvanna County’s unique
celebration of rural life, is held partly to educate children about the history of agriculture
and people’s relationship to the land. One of
the key attractions of the event is the display
of old farm equipment – from horse-drawn
plows to ancient tractors.
The event has also evolved into a “an old
time county fair without the carnival,’’ said
Swales. That means 4-H members get to
show off their livestock, kids compete to
make the most realistic animal sounds and
bakers vy for the best tasting apple pie -- all
in the tradition of county fairs throughout
America.
Old Farm Day, which this year had much
less traffic problems than last year, offered
some 130 vendors and another 20 exhibitions and demonstrations. Horses pulled
plows, craftsmen bundled brooms, caned
chairs, turned pots, wove baskets and blew
glass. Kids, bearing face paint and carrying
balloons, ran about throughout the day.
“It’s a community event,’’ said Swales.
John May, one of the founders of Old Farm
Day and a collector of old farm equipment,
told Swales at the end of the event: “I am
well pleased with the day.’’
“I told him that we were too,’’ said Swales.

Karlise Adds Aide Training, Expands Business
BY PAGE H. GIFFORD
CORRESPONDENT
Karlise In-Home Care, LLC has taken
over the space previously occupied by
the Sycamore Day Spa and turned it
into a training center for Certified
Nursing Assistants [CNA’s] and
Medication Aides [MA’s].
Karlise currently provides a variety
of health care services tailored to the
needs of individuals who need help,
whether it be a companion, a
Personal Care Aide, a Certified
Nursing Assistant, a Licensed Practical
Nurse or Registered Nurse or even a
Pediatric Nurse. All types of care are
provided day or night or holidays.
To help with the demand for good,
skilled nursing staff in-home, in nursing homes and assisted living, Karlise
has added the Karlise Essentials
Training Academy. LLC. President,
Amanda Randolph saw the need for
skilled and specialized care in what is
becoming a growing need because of
the country’s aging society. Certified
Nursing Aides do a lot of the hands-on
work nurses used to do before paperwork took over their shifts.
Now, with people on so many medications, it takes a LPN or RN, twice as
long to dispense medication. This is
where the Medication Aide can help,
freeing the nurse to address the problems and the needs of the patient.
Randolph has set up the premises
with two small class rooms and a
demonstration
room
with
a
kitchen/living room and bedroom. It is
here that the aides take what they
have learned in the classroom and get
hands-on experience using mannequins.
“Eventually we will have a Hoya lift
as well,” said Paula Gains, CNA who
teaches the Medication Aide Training
Program. For any CNA, knowing how
to use a Hoya lift is essential in assisted living or a nursing home environment. They also have a shower room
so the aides get the hands-on experience of giving a bath as well.
Shirley Booker, RN is the Academy
Coordinator, Carole Epperly, RN will
be CNA training instructor and Christy
Pribble who is the vice-president is
also the Clinical Nurse Manager.
Pribble and Gains state the
response by those registering for
classes has been good.
“Otherwise they would have to travel to Piedmont (Community) College
or other places in Charlottesville,”
said Gains.

and colorful with fun patterns. Even
the ID card chains are all different colors ranging from lime to turquoise to

Randolph and her staff are positive
and so far have been filling a real need
in the area and will continue to provide quality care to those who need it

Volunteers Pilgrimaged to Wise
BY PAGE H. GIFFORD
CORRESPONDENT
Dr. Victoria M. Weiss O.D.and other
volunteers made another pilgrimage
to Wise, Virginia to the largest three
day clinic event in July, serving an
estimated 6,918 patients in need of
eye exams and medical and dental
exams. These clinics are known as
Remote Medical Clinics.
“Over the three days, we did eye
exams for 1,063 patients and 928
received glasses,” said Weiss. Joining
Weiss was volunteer Randy Smith,
who works at the Fluvanna
Correctional Center for Women, Dr.
Susan Mueller from Charlottesville,
Optician, Michael Payne from
Scottsville, Ellen and Bob Keane and
Florann and George Burnett from the
Rivanna Lions Club and residents of
Lake Monticello.
“I am so glad we had local volunteers and the support of the Lions
Club for those needing eyeglasses,”
she said.
The day would begin for Weiss and
other volunteers with a long line for
eye exams at 6:30 a.m. and last until
6 p.m. On the first day, 1,500 patients
came in search of needed eye exams.
Two full labs were set up on the
premises to make eyeglasses. Weiss
stated they did as much as they could
during those three days but some did
require follow up treatment.
The event in Wise is one that has
grown over the last ten years and
serves those who are uninsured,
underinsured
or
unemployed.
According to Weiss, Wise, located in
southwest Virginia, has the highest
percentage of the unemployed in the
state. After a segment on CBS’ 60
Minutes television show, about the
clinic helping those in need, the
donations poured in to support clinic.
Local companies also helped by providing food and beverages to those
waiting in line to be seen.
Weiss has been with VOSH
[Volunteer Optometric Services to
Humanity] since she was a student
back in 1986. She and her husband
and partner in the practice, Dr.
Douglas Weiss, have been traveling
down to Central America since 1999,
volunteering their time to help there
as well as the annual trip to Wise.
Back row: Ellen and Bob Keane, Florann and George Burnett, Karen and Michael
Payne. Front row: Victoria Weiss, Jeremy Weiss, Allison Mueller, Susan Mueller.
Contributed photo.
Recently, the Weiss’ were the recipients of the L.B. Gill Fellowship Award
for their cooperative effort with the
Lions Club in providing eye exams
and glasses to those in need in
Fluvanna County. The award is given
to those for outstanding and unselfish
humanitarian service.
“I am so happy that we had so
many local volunteers who could
help this time,” said a grateful
Victoria Weiss.

Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, a long-time Scottsville
landmark, has opened a branch near Lake Monticello.
Thacker Brothers is now also located in the former
University of Virginia Credit Union building on Rt. 53 and
features a roomy chapel that can be converted into a
reception room.
Owner Bradley Howdyshell said that the way people
choose to say good-bye to loved ones is also changing the
traditional chapel memorial service and some prefer to
simply celebrate that individual’s life. They offer many
resources for designing the funeral service based on the
wishes of the family and the deceased. They even offer
pet services. There is grief counseling available and other
forms of support.
Howdyshell and his wife Yvonne moved to Fluvanna
after seeing a need for their services.
“People in this area expressed a need for traditional
funeral services and the churches in the area wanted
something closer as well,” said Bradley.
The Howdyshells are glad to be a part of the community and enjoy living and working in Fluvanna County.
Thacker Brothers Funeral Home has a long history in
the area. Homer D. Thacker was nineteen years old when
he was working for the Beal Furniture Company in
Scottsville. The furniture business also sold caskets and
since there was no official funeral parlor in town, the furniture company began “undertaking” the task of burying
those who had died. A few years later when Homer’s
younger brother, A. Raymon Thacker, began assisting his
brother with these affairs, members of the community
began encouraging them to establish a funeral home.
As the community grew and people began to desire
more formal types of funeral services, the brothers convinced Mr. Beal to convert an old service station on
Scottsville’s Main Street into a facility to be used as a
funeral home. Thacker Brothers Funeral Home was
established in 1931 and the brothers served the community in this role until their retirement in 1998. Homer
died at 105 and Raymon is still alive at 101.
The brothers then sold the business to W. Latham and
Linda Jones and the Jones carried on the traditions of the
funeral home until their retirement in January of 2009
when current owners Bradley and Yvonne Howdyshell
purchased the business. The Howdyshells are both from
Staunton. Yvonne is a former teacher and assistant prinicple.

“With all the cutbacks in education I figured it was time
to leave and help Bradley with this business,” she said.
Bradley is the funeral director and has spent 11 years in
the funeral business. Yvonne is the business manager.
This kind and charming couple are clearly committed
continuing the long tradition of a family serving the
needs of the residents of Albemarle, Buckingham,
Fluvanna and Nelson counties.
”This is a unique family-owned small business,” said
Bradley. “We spend more time with family and personalize the memorial service. We make DVD’s using photos of
the loved one, often creating themes, and everything,
including personalizing caskets, is all tailored to the individual.”

Fluvanna Woman Searches for Bone Marrow Donor
BY KRISTIN SANCKEN
CORRESPONDENT
Melanie Hood has been overwhelmed with the amount of support she’s received since being diagnosed with a life threatening disease
in February.
“Everyone has been supportive –
smiling, asking how I’m doing, taking good care of my daughter
Tristyn, offering to prepare food for
my husband,” said Hood. “I think
I’m on a prayer list at just about
every church,” she joked.
She started to feel sick around
Thanksgiving of 2009, but it wasn’t
until February that some concerning
blood work came back from the lab.
“The doctor called and said, ‘go
straight to Martha Jefferson, they
have a bed ready for you,” said
Hood, a school counselor at Crozet
Elementary School in Albemarle
County. “It turned out that I only had
one-tenth of the blood I should have
in my body.”
After the doctors at Martha
Jefferson sent her to the University
of Virginia Medical Center for a second opinion, she was diagnosed with
myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS),
also known as preleukemia. The
only treatment to insure a good
prognosis is a bone marrow transplant.
The diagnosis came as a shock to
friends and family.
“She definitely seemed healthy,”
said her husband Trenton. “We were
caught off guard with the whole situation.”
“I know she had not been feeling
well and had lost a lot of weight,”
said Ruth Kirby, a secretary at Crozet
Elementary School. “It never crossed
my mind of something this serious.
Once the shock wore off, all we
wanted to do is see how we could
contribute, and get her well again.”
Others in Fluvanna County have
rallied to help her. “She’s in here
once a week with her daughter to get
ice cream,” said Janice Ullenbruch,
co-owner of Palmyra Country Store.
“We want to do anything we can to
help this gal.”
Melanie Hood and her husband –
who is the general manager at the
Courtyard Inn in Charlottesville -have lived in the Cherokee neighborhood of Lake Monticello for five
years. They have been touched by
how many people have stepped up
to help take care of their 3-year-old
daughter, Tristyn.
“My neighbors, the Meades, pick
up Tristyn when I have to have treatment,” said Hood. “She’s even an
honorary boy scout!”
Since finding out about the diagnosis and prognosis, the family has
been searching doggedly for an eligible bone marrow donor. With the
help of the National Marrow Donor
Program and the “Be the Match,”
program, they’ve held two donor
drives in the month of September –
one in Charlottesville on September
9 and one in Baltimore, where
Melanie Hood is originally from, on
September 19.
“We posted a flyer for the drive
here; I’ve been spreading the word to
customers,” said Bob Ullenbruch of
Palmyra Country Store. “She got 80
some odd people to come out to the
one in Charlottesville.”
“So far three potential donors have
been identified,” said Melanie Hood.
“But after further testing, either none
of them fit or none of them were
healthy enough to go through with
the operation. All of the results of
the drives aren’t back yet. We’re
hoping another match will pop up.”
“My thing with this is that it isn’t
like giving a kidney,” said Bob
Ullenbruch. “It’s a simple cheek
Melanie Hood.
swab and it puts you on the registry
to help out thousands of people.
That’s a small thing to do.”
A swab of the inside cheekc of an
interested bone marrow donor provides the DNA results that will list
them on the National Marrow Donor
registry. If DNA results from the
swab come up as a positive match to
someone on the database waiting for
a donor, the donor may be asked to
take further medical tests to ensure
compatibility.
“As soon as I find a donor, Tristyn
and I will be moving up to Baltimore
to stay with my mom and get the
treatment at Johns Hopkins, because
UVA doesn’t have a bone marrow
transplant program yet,” said
Melanie Hood.

If no one from the two donor
drives turns up to be a positive
match, the doctors will try to get a
bone marrow transplant from
Hood’s sister, Penny Morris. Morris
is 50 years old and lives in
Philadelphia. And although she’s
only a half-match, Hood feels a pressure to proceed with the procedure
as soon as possible.
“I don’t want to wait because right
now I’m healthy and young,” she
said. “I work at a school with kids,
and if I get an infection, or even the
flu, from them, it will be harder to
fight.”
In the meantime, she must go in to
the Infusion Center at U.Va. for a
weeklong treatment of Decitipine, a
chemo-like drug, every three weeks,
to help restore healthy blood cells.
Regardless, she remains upbeat.
“I actually like going to treatment
and meeting new people. It’s a great
social time,” said Melanie Hood.
“Melanie is a special person that
deserves every chance in the world
to see her little girl grow up and
experience everything life has to
offer,” said Kirby.
“We’re hoping for the best and just
taking one day at a time,” said
Trenton. “We’re trying to remain
positive.”

Hood’s bone marrow match, or to

About the National Marrow Donor Program®
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and Be The Match FoundationSM
are nonprofit organizations dedicated to creating an opportunity for all
patients to receive the bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant they
need.
The Need
• Every year, more than 10,000 patients are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma for which a marrow or cord blood
transplant from an unrelated donor may be their best or only hope of a cure.
• About 70 percent of patients in need of a transplant do not have a matching
donor in their family. They depend on the NMDP’s Be The Match Registry® to
find an unrelated donor or cord blood unit.

160,000 cord blood units. There is additional access to more than 5 million
donors and 240,000 cord blood units listed on international registries.
• The NMDP facilitated more than 4,800 marrow and cord blood transplants in
2009, an average of more than 400 transplants each month.
Center for Cord Blood®
The Be The Match Registry provides the largest single listing of donated cord
blood units in the United States, with more than 160,000 cord blood units.
• The NMDP’s network of public cord blood banks recruited more than 18,000
cord blood units in 2009.
• In 2009, the NMDP provided more than 1,000 cord blood units for transplant,
an increase of more than 11 percent over 2008.

Let’s Do Lunch
A RESTAURANT REVIEW FROM FLUVANNA, BY MONA ORANGE
New Owners, New Buzz at the Cadet Diner
Have you heard the buzz? It seems
that a lot of people have been talking
about The Cadet Diner in Fork
Union. Friends have been going
there a lot lately, especially for
breakfast and lunch. So what is a
good restaurant reviewer to do but
find out what the buzz is all about?
On Aug. 15, BFF’s (Best Friends
Forever) Jessica Williams and
Jennifer Hawk, former employees of
the Village Restaurant, took over The
Cadet Diner and were slowly making
changes. These two moms (of six
children between their two families)
saw an opportunity to own their own
restaurant and went for it.
Last week, four friends and I drove
over to try The Cadet Diner for ourselves. Located next to the Fork
Union Motor Lodge, it is easy to find.
As we got there around 11 a.m., two
friends had breakfast and three of us
ate lunch. Breakfast is served until
noon.
Jo Ann was really happy with a
fresh waffle that were so hot all the
butter just melted. Rosemary also
enjoyed her breakfast of a Western
omelet with a biscuit. The egg
formed a wrap around the peppers,
tomatoes, onions, ham and mushrooms making it neat and tasty.
Breakfast starts at $1.50 for a cup of
oatmeal or grits and goes up to $7.50
for a Western omelet.
Loretta enjoyed half of a rather
large Philly cheese steak with grilled
mushrooms and onions. She
planned to enjoy the other half at
home. Myrna had the fish and chips
with a side of coleslaw. She especially liked the fresh, creamy coleslaw. I
had the pork barbecue sandwich
which was very sweet and juicy and
served on a hamburger type bun
with coleslaw. I had macaroni and
cheese as my side and it tasted
smooth and cheesy (just the way I
like my mac and cheese). We all
shared a basket of onion straws
which are served with ranch dressing. They were light and delicious.
We all ordered from the new $6
menu which includes a sandwich or
entrée, one side and a drink. Daily
specials and soups are offered every
day.
Desserts and breads are made at
the restaurant. We tried the caramel
cake (yellow cake with caramel
icing) and chocolate chip cookies.
Both were freshly baked and
yummy. As a matter-of-fact, the
chocolate chip cookies were outstanding, even after taking them
home and not eating one until the

brownies, red velvet cake, lemon

The restaurant is open and clean
but on the plain side. Small paper
bags with bright autumn flowers
decorated the window sills and
tables and added some color to the
decor. Our server was friendly and
very attentive.
I asked new owner Jessica
Williams how things were going and
she was thrilled with the response
since they took over. In addition to
residents coming over from around
Fluvanna, they are getting lot’s of
business from the Department of
Social Services, the power plant at
Bremo Bluff, and local businesses.

The Cadet Diner, under the stewardship of Jessica and Jennifer is a
homey place to meet friends and

Fluvanna Farmers Market at Pleasant Grove
BY PHYLLIS MONTELLESE
Tired of Fresh, Red Ripe Tomatoes?
At long last, the final week of September brought
us rain and cooler weather and less dust and bright
sunshine. And yet, fewer shoppers came by to see
us. Well, if you are getting tired of red ripe tomatoes and fresh peppers and squash, in another
month or two you will be greeted with the supermarket waxy imitations. So enjoy what you can
while they are still in season. I find that whatever
we haven’t grown ourselves, I buy from the other
vendors.
Our market will continue until the end of
October – rain or shine. It is wonderful to sit down
to a dinner and know that everything is local: And
you even know who raised it.
We did not have a raffle this week but last week’s
winner was Dionne Knight. She won the usual
Virgina grown tote filled with a jar of honey and a
baby long stem pumpkin from Randy Martin at
Sunnyside and a zebra throw from Ruth Stout We
will continue to have produce, bread, crafts and
beef as well as chicken. A variety of crafters will
now have some seasonal items as well. In addition
we will have the Charlottesville market “lemonade
lady” with cold or hot drinks as appropriate.
If you are not already on the email list contact
me and I will add you on.
At the end of the year I will send out a listing of
vendors who can be contacted after the market is
over for eggs, meat, bread, cold weather crops
(root vegetables as available), and crafts.
I will then retire my pen (or rather- keyboard)
until the opening of market next April. Contact me
at- [email protected].

Jefferson Jazz Jammers Help Raise Funds for Pier
BY PAGE H. GIFFORD
CORRESPONDENT
A full house turned out for the
Jefferson Jazz Jammers, performing
at the Lake Monticello Clubhouse on
a recent warm autumn afternoon.
The Dixieland jazz band donated
their time to help raise more funds
for Bo’s Pier. With ticket sales and a
50/50 raffle, it brought Bo’s Pier
close to its goal of $25,000. The gentleman who won $109 in the raffle
donated it back to the Pier’s coffers.
Formerly Al’s Pals [Al still plays the
piano], the band is a unique group of
rotating musicians who love nothing
more than to play their favorite
music and entertain those who share
their passion.
“We are a bunch of central Virginia
musicians
who
meet
in
Charlottesville on the 2nd and 4th
Thursdays of every month just to
play jazz together for the fun of it,”
said lead musician Larry Simpkins
who plays clarinet and vocals.
He explains that all musicians, of
any age and skill level and any
instrument, are welcome to attend
any of the jazz sessions.
“We are still looking for a jazz bagpipe player,” he said. “We are a real
friendly bunch and there are usually
ten to fifteen different musicians
attending each session. We play a lot
of jazz styles: a bit of Dixieland, a lot
of standards, quite a few Latin numbers, and plenty of blues. Sometimes
we just make something up on the
Marrocco Paintings Now in New York
spot.” Improvisational music is a hit
with them and they do it well.
“It does not matter if you are a
good at reading music because the
emphasis is always on improvisation. We will always have a go at
your particular favorites and even
your own jazz compositions,” said
Simpkins.
Locals who were in the band, other
than Al, include Burton Marks, who
plays clarinet and saxophone and is
also with the Charlottesville
Municipal Band and Joe Tucker on
drums.
Simpkins said it is informal and
musicians can join them and take a
solo or just noodle away in the background.
For those interested in joining the
band, they meet the 2nd and 4th
Thursday of every month from 7-10
p.m. at Jefferson Heights on Pantops
Mountain Road.
“There is a new baby grand piano
at Jefferson Heights for the keyboard
players and we usually have an amp
and a couple of mikes for the singers
out there. Jefferson Heights is real
easy to get to with loads of free parking,” said Simpkins.
The band served up some old time
favorites of familiar blues songs from
the 20’s to Dixieland jazz.. Those
who attended enjoyed the music and
encouraged them to return again.
As for the fishing pier at Lake
Monticello’s Tufton Lake, it will soon
become a reality most are looking
forward to and the goal is to have it
built by May 2011 for the children’s
fishing derby.

BANKRUPTCY
Many in Fluvanna County who are familiar with the local artists know the
name of Ann Marrocco.
She is a member of the Fluvanna Art Association and is well known in local
art circles for her charming watercolors of European street scenes and cafes as
well as her florals and delicate hand painted glass Christmas ornaments.
Marrocco had now found a new outlet for her work: Contents For The Home,
located in Plainview. N.Y. is a showroom for interior decorators and designers.
“I am really excited about this,” said Marrocco whose daughter is a designer
with another woman and two decorators from New York City. “This is high end,
with 1,300 square-foot-area, housing all kinds of decorator items and fabrics
which can sell for as much as $300-$400 a yard,” she said.
Marrocco will be featuring her watercolors in the showroom and receives the
entire amount for her paintings when they sell. This is not consignment so
there is no splitting the fee she receives. The paintings are shipped unmatted
and unframed since those who purchase them prefer to do their own matting
and framing of the work.
Marrocco had been teaching watercolor classes out of her home. Those who
participated ranged in age from six on up to teens and adults. But Marrocco
stated she can no longer devote time teaching since this new endeavor will
keep her occupied. She is proud of her students and their accomplishments
and will miss teaching.

12 YEARS IN FLUVANNA
The Top Ten Reasons
NOT to use Jane Feild's
White Glove:
10. You would rather pay someone
"under the table"; you're not
going to be nominated for a cabinet position anyway.
9. Your grandmother said on her
deathbed that she wished she
had spent more time doing
housework.
8. You would rather pay a service
that sends new people all the
time; it's a great way to meet
people!
7. You feel sorry for those dust
bunnies under your bed -- they
need somewhere to live!
6. You would rather save the
money and paint the baseboards when the buildup
becomes unbearable.
5. Cleaning gives you an excuse
for not doing something more
creative.
4. You just got a new membership
to Sam's Club and want to
spend your money on all those
cleaning supplies.
3. You believe in corporate
America; you would rather pay
more for a larger company
where the owner stays in the
office.
2. You would rather pay a service
that doesn't clean under the
stovetop -- who looks under
there anyway?
1. You don't want your mother-inlaw to visit anyway!

First, trees began to disappear. Then
large construction trucks arrived. Last,
but certainly not least, “Keep off the
Grass” signs popped up along the road.
What caused such a drastic change to
the charming Pleasant Grove? Could it
be the new high school or the potential
for a cracked windshield? All FMS student Devon Burger knows is that the
country appeal of Pleasant Grove is
disappearing right along with the trees.
“I thought Pleasant Grove was supposed to be pleasant,” said Burger.
“Now it’s the unpleasant Pleasant
Grove.”
Ever since groundbreaking began on
the new high school, Fluvanna’s
charming, farm-like Pleasant Grove
has been subjected to tremendous
changes. Pleasant Grove has traditionally been a place where Fluvanna residents run with their dogs or just go fly
a kite. FCHS librarian Joanne
Washington does just that. “I love it!”
she said. “My husband and I go to the
Farmer’s Market, walk our dogs, and
geocache there.” Nevertheless, her
response to the newly paved and
painted road is not as positive. “I
mean, I can see why they had to do it,
but…” Washington added.
Some speculate that the reason for
the amendments may be for safety
issues. “The loose rocks down there
are just not safe,” FCHS freshman
Anjelica Morris said. The loose gravel
of the previous Pleasant Grove road
had a tendency to drift onto route 53.
Hitting one of those rocks at 55 miles
per hour would not be a pretty sight on
a new car. Another conjecture is that
officials wanted to change the quality
of Pleasant Grove to conform to the
new high school. A newly seeded lawn
is among these changes. The result has
been multiple “Keep Off the Grass”
signs, located about 20 feet apart on
either side of the road. “It’s ‘Keep Off
the New Grass’ because they just
reseeded all of it,” said Dr. Bob Burger
of Fluvanna. Still, some find it just
another way to further reduce the
allure of Pleasant Grove.
Keep in mind, there are many beneficial adjustments to Pleasant Grove,
including the decreased risk for
cracked windshields and a more aesthetically pleasing field. Drivers on Rt.
53 will no longer have to contend with
flying rocks and gravel. Plus, there is a
new turn lane to reduce the risk of
blocking traffic by those turning into
Pleasant Grove. And instead of running
on semi-dead grass--and occasionally
weeds--visitors can enjoy lush grass
beneath their feet.
But for those who liked Pleasant
Grove just the way it was, that new
asphalt road with its distractingly yellow lines has only diminished the
attraction to the farmer heritage of
Fluvanna. Few would automatically
suspect a Farmers Market to be held
there when they see that road. And
with all those signs telling them to
keep off, where are Fluvanna locals
going to walk their dogs now? In the

The Fluco Beat
BY HEATHER HICKS
FLUVANNA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL MASS MEDIA STUDENT
Deer, Oh Deer!
They’re out and eating up your
garden. They’re standing in your
yard and chewing on your lawn.
They’re in the middle of the road
causing traffic. Is there any stop to
them? The whitetail deer in Lake
Monticello are up to plenty of mischief and seem to consider every
plant their own personal buffet. But
what are the locals saying about the
issue?
Student residents of the Lake have
varied opinions, including:
“I hate the deer.’’
“They leave their scat in my yard.”
“The deer were here first.”
“We should bow hunt.”
Regardless of which side they are
on, residents have strong opinions
on whether or not the deer are welcome. Some Lake residents think
that the deer should be hunted with
rifles, while others believe that the
deer are friendly residents themselves. But Lake resident and
Fluvanna County High School freshman Julia Albright doesn’t find them
so friendly. “[A deer] chased me
from my bus stop one time!” she
said.
Many residents are in agreement
that nothing can be done about
these four-legged intruders. “It is
what it is,” said FCHS sophomore
Devin Peregoy.
“I don’t like them, but we need to
learn to live with them,” said
Kimberly Feight, another student
and Lake resident. Others think the
Lake needs to take a more proactive
stand. “Relocating the deer would be
better,” said local resident Trey
Lawrence.
The deer have been known to run
out in front of cars, nibble on newly
sprouted vegetables when no one is
looking, and even in some cases,
attack dogs and be hostile to people.
It’s an ongoing battle, and some people are fed up and want something
done, while others believe that hunting them would be too dangerous
and violent to ever permit.
In 2006, Lake Monticello created
the
Wildlife
Management
Committee (WMC) to do research on
the whitetail deer population. The
committee has yet to declare that
taking action on the deer is necessary at this time. In the meantime,
the deer continue to munch. In fact,
every day, an adult whitetail deer
eats five to seven pounds of plant
matter. Its diet consists mostly of
things such as leaves, acorns and
other nuts, grass, fruit, flowers, and
almost anything found in a garden.
Even though there is plenty of grass
inside of Lake Monticello, the deer
prefer eat it when it is young. The
squirrels take the majority of the
nuts, so what’s left? Voila! The
biggest food source for the deer ends
up being residents’ carefully-tended
(and sometimes, “deer proof”)
plants.
Although there seems to be an
abundance of plant life inside the
Lake, a single deer consumes over
one ton of vegetation per year. With
the ever-expanding number of deer,
there are hardly enough food
resources for the entire population.
(Notice how incredibly skinny and
underfed they look?)
If Lake
Monticello were to allow hunting or
relocation for a short time every few
years, the deer population could
decrease enough for them to be able
to eat more, and possibly survive
more easily.
The debate over the deer issue
rages on. The Lake could simply do
nothing and allow the population to
grow. Or if the deer become too hostile, the Lake administrators could be
forced to take action. The citizens
wait for an answer, but the common
question still stands: Should we keep
the furry creatures or should we find
another solution to the problem?

Flucos Start Strong But Mustangs Storm Back to Win
BY DUNCAN NIXON
CORRESPONDENT
With the Fluco football team coming
off an impressive 27-0 win at Western
Albemarle, the crowd was in high spirits Friday (Oct. 1) as the home team
hosted nearby Jefferson District rival,
Monticello High School. Optimism
soared as the Flucos opened the game
in a decisive manner. On their second
possession, the Flucos marched down
the field. A 22 yard run by senior running back Aric Edmonds set the stage
for an 18 yard touchdown run by quarterback T.J. Dudley. With 7:01 remaining in the first quarter the Flucos led 70. The Flucos then forced the
Mustangs to punt with a 3 and out performance. A bad snap on the punt gave
the Flucos the ball at the Monticello 12
yard line. On the Flucos second play
from scrimmage, junior running back
Ben Markiewicz ran the ball up the
middle and into the end zone. The
conversion failed, due to a bad snap,
but the Flucos held a 13-0 lead with
5:36 left in the first quarter.
Monticello responded with a drive of
its own and, while making a tackle on
a long pass play, quarterback/defensive back, T.J. Dudley suffered a hand
injury that ended his play on offense
for the rest of the game. Monticello
scored with 2:28 left in the first quarter to make the score 13-6. On the
ensuing kick-off Monticello tried what
would be its first of four consecutive
on-side kicks. In this case, it failed as
the ball slid out of bounds. With junior
Ya Ya Anderson now at quarterback,
the Flucos began marching the ball
down field and it looked like they
might quickly go back up by two TDs.
Unfortunately, a Mustang defender
wrestled the ball away from a Fluco
running back at the 15 yard line and
sprinted all the way down the left side
line for a touchdown, and the
Mustangs were suddenly tied 13-13,
rather than being down by two scores.
Monticello followed its touchdown
with an on-side kick which it recovered. The Mustangs struck quickly, as a
simple swing pass turned into a long
TD run. The Fluco defender hit the
receiver at the line of scrimmage, but
the receiver ducked out of the tackle
and was able to take it all the way. In a
stunning turn around, the Mustangs
now led by a 20-13 score, with 7:18
left in the half. The Flucos quickly
responded with a march that culminated in a touchdown pass from
Anderson to Edmonds. Unfortunately,
Monticello was not to be denied and
they came back with another TD to
make it 27-19, with 2:21 left in the
half. The Flucos recovered the ensuing
onside kick and had excellent field
possession for a two-minute drill. The
drilled was well executed by Anderson,
and appeared to be successfully
capped off by a touchdown pass to
senior wide receiver Kyle Pillow with
0:07 left on the clock. Unfortunately, a
chop block penalty call nullified the
play, and the half ended with the
Flucos down 27-19.
Monticello had possession at the
start of the second half and on their
first play from scrimmage Pillow alertly cut in front of the Mustang receiver
to intercept a sideline pass. Pillow easily took the interception all the way to
the end zone. The Flucos now trailed
by only two at 27-25. Unfortunately
for the Flucos, very little went right
from that point on. The Mustangs
turned in a number of big plays in
their next few possessions and scored
three quick touchdowns to take an
insurmountable 48-25 lead into the
fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter,
the Mustangs added a meaningless late
touchdown, scoring on a fourth down
run, after a valiant goal line stand by
the Fluco’s second string defense.
Obviously, the Flucos were fighting
right to the end.
After the game Coach Barnett stated
that “we started strong and they couldn’t stop us”. But, he noted that his team
still needs to get better at preventing
the big play. He was also adamant that
the several injuries to key players that
occurred during the game will not stop
the team. He stated “we will win, with
whoever we are able to put out on the
field.”
The Flucos are 2-3 overall and 1-1 in
Jefferson District play. They now face
three consecutive district road games,
as they travel to William Monroe on
October 6, Goochland County on
October 13 and Orange County on
October 20. They end their regular
season play with home games against
Charlottesville on October 27 and
Louisa County on November 1.

Kicking Net Donated
The football team had a crucial piece of equipment on the sidelines Friday night – a new kicking net -- thanks to a generous donation from an area business.
“The Fluco Society asked the teams for needs and the football program requested the kicking net. We are so very thankful that Rivanna
Gear and Apparel donated this important equipment piece to help
our Flucos,” said Fluco Society representative Bryan Rothamel.
With the kicking net, the football team’s place kicker can now
warm-up before attempting a field goal.
Almost immediately after the Fluco Society posted the needs
online, a representative from Rivanna Gear and Apparel, located in
the Pantops Shopping Center, said they would be able to help with
the net. Darren McCauley, the team’s kicking coach, was presented
with the donation earlier last week.
“This further proves that being a Fluco is a community thing,” said
Nick Ward of the Fluco Society.
For more information on Fluco Society or if you wish to join, check
out www.FlucoSociety.com or email [email protected].
Also, Marisella’s restaurant will sponsor Fluco Night this Saturday,
Oct. 9 from 12-3 p.m. 10% of sales during that time will be donated
to the Fluco Society.
