In October, 280 second-graders at
Central Elementary School participated in the poster contest sponsored by the Fluvanna Garden Club,
which was charged with choosing a
winner to be sent to the district contest. Bella Higginbotham was the first
-place winner, with runners-up Anna
Amatok, Chloe Colvin, and Ethan
Richey recognized for their posters as
well. Luvenia Rogers, president of the
Fluvanna Garden Club, presented the
prizes to the winners on the televised
morning announcements at Central
Elementary and stated, “We are very
proud of the fine work of all the second graders to make people aware
of the importance of Smokey Bear’s
message of ‘Only you can prevent
wild fires,’ and Woodsy Owl’s, ‘Give a
hoot, don’t pollute!’”

A fire Dec. 15 destroyed the home of John
Anderson of 97 Deer Lane in the Cloverdale
area of Fluvanna. No one was injured
“He was cooking bacon on his electric
range,” said Fluvanna Fire Chief Mike Brent,
“and he went in to take a shower. When he
came back out, the top of the electric range
was on fire, and the curtains above the back
of the range were burning. By then the
kitchen was fully involved,” said Brent. “He
basically had time to just get himself out.”
Brent said the Red Cross has been contacted, and added that Anderson, who lived
alone, does have family in the area.
Residents said that the small wooden
house was one of the oldest homes in the
Cloverdale area.
Many gathered had great attachment to
the home. “I have a lot of memories of this
old place – I was raised here,” said Maurice
Brown. “This was our family homeplace,”
he added, shaking his head.

Cheap shot
Overall, I think Ms. (Christina) Guseman
wrote a balanced story. However, that last
sentence was really a cheap shot. Some
of us can’t move, whether we want to
or not. Shame on you for using a throw
away editorial comment like that.
–Elizabeth Tidwell, Palmyra
Christina Guseman responds: The last
sentence was meant to underscore the
point, made earlier in the article, that Aqua
customers have no recourse other than
moving – an option which, as Ms. Tidwell
points out, is not feasible for many.

BY TRICIA JOHNSON, CORRESPONDENT
Charges have been dropped against
Travis Allen, 19, of Scottsville, who was
in an ATV crash on August 15, 2014 that
killed Kaitlin Aylor, 18, of Madison County.
The two were riding a 2006 Honda
2RX-450R ATV on Rt. 761 around 8:30
p.m. when the vehicle left the road. Both
Allen and Aylor were thrown from the
vehicle when it crashed.
Allen, a 2013 Fluvanna High School
graduate, had been charged with driving
after illegally consuming alcohol and
with failure to appear in court.
In a hearing in Fluvanna County
General District Court on Dec. 9, special
prosecutor Mike Caudill asked the judge
to drop the charges.
“We made a motion to ‘nolle pros’
– meaning that the charges would not
be continued at this time,” said Caudill.
“However, the matter is still under investigation by the state police and additional and/or different charges could be
brought in the future.”
Caudill added that the state has one year
from the date of the offense to resubmit
misdemeanor charges, and that there is no
statute of limitations should they decide to
move forward with felony charges.
Allen’s attorney, Graven Craig, declined
to comment on the case and characterized it as “still pending.”

School Board anticipates
next year’s budget
BY CHRISTINA DIMEO GUSEMAN, CORRESPONDENT
The School Board looked ahead to next
year’s budget at its meeting Wednesday night
(Dec. 10), contemplating what effect the state
budget crisis may have on school funding.
Not much information is forthcoming from
state officials, Fluvanna Superintendent Gena
Keller and Finance Director Ed Breslauer told
the Board. But individual state representatives have been telling their constituents that
funding will be lessened, they said.
Next year, in fiscal year 2016 (FY16),
school staff wants to focus the budget on
four areas: salary scales with a step increase for all staff, holding staff harmless
for increases in health insurance, staffing
needs with regard to class sizes and new
teaching positions, and technology replacement and upgrades.
“[FY]16 could be a very interesting year”
due to budget cuts, Breslauer warned. Plus
average daily membership (ADM), a formula
used by the state to determine state funding
levels, is dropping in Fluvanna. “We know
that ADM isn’t going through the roof so
it’s either going to meet our goals or drop
a little,” he said.
The FY15 budget is on track so far this
year, Breslauer told the Board.

Some Lake Monticello residents knew
about the high water and sewer bills
before they bought their homes. But
anyone who moved to the Lake before
2005 has been in for a real surprise.
The following chart details the year
Aqua Virginia made its requests for rate
increases, the State Corporation Commission (SCC) case number for each rate
case, the amount of additional annual
revenue requested by Aqua, the amount
of additional annual revenue the SCC
granted to Aqua at the end of each rate
increase, the rates set by the SCC, the
percentage the increases represented,
and the total amount of a monthly water
and sewer bill for the typical Lake Monticello customer using 3,150 gallons per
month.
The rate increase of 1996 was made by
the Lake Monticello Service Company.
The rates put into effect after that rate
case were Aqua’s initial rates when it
purchased the system in 2003.
Ken Schrad from the SCC provided
three of the case numbers and some
figures, especially those from 1996. The
rest of the information was obtained
from researching the SCC’s website, with
the exception of the percentages, which
were computed from the figures.

Most people can only dream of their
drawings coming to life, but for 48 local
second graders, those dreams became a
reality last week.
On Dec. 9, a line of second graders filed
into the Central Elementary auditorium.
They took their seats and quietly whispered
and giggled to each other, having no idea
why they had been summoned there. As the
whispering quieted, their art teacher, Debra
Goldie, called for the kids’ attention and
reminded them of the monsters they had
drawn for Halloween a few months prior.
What they didn’t know when they drew
them was that some of the monster drawings would be selected to be sent to Fluvanna County High School to be used for a
special surprise.
Under the direction of art teachers Diane
Greenwood and Michelle Coleman, the
FCHS Crafts and Decorative Arts class and
the Computer Graphics class had worked
together to turn the drawings into 3-D clay
sculptures, complete with packaging that
include each second grader’s name, monster
description, and original drawing. The monsters – many of them named Godzilla – had
“powers” ranging from blue fire to flying and
definitely showed off the creativity of kids.
“I found [the] idea on Pinterest when
looking for project ideas for my students. I
discussed it with Ms. Goldie and Ms. Greenwood to see if it was something that we
could pull off,” said Coleman. “We chose
[which drawings to do] based on what
would work in clay,” she added. The drawings were scanned and distributed to the
high school students who spent weeks
bringing the drawings to life. Using the
top halves of clear, plastic food containers
and pieces of cardboard which had been
printed to look like professional, four-color

toy packaging, the art students worked hard
to get them ready for the big moment.
When the surprise was finally revealed to
the kids, they all gasped and covered their
mouths with excitement. Some of the high
school artists came to help pass out the creations to the kids as they were called up one
by one to receive their figures.
“I had no idea what we were going to
the auditorium for,” said second grader Ava
Goodfield. “I had no idea. I was like, huh?”
said second grader Oscar Rivera-DeJesus,
who added that after he saw his monster he
thought, “It’s amazing.”
When asked if she had plans on doing
something like this in future Coleman
replied “Yes. Our challenge is that we have
to have an upper-level class running in the
same semester as a computer graphics
class to make it happen. As long as that is
a constant, we will continue to try to make
it a permanent part of our classes.” This
unique project which Coleman hopes will
be the first of many even made the local
news, showing how important collaboration between schools and grades can be.

“The magazine contacted us in August to tell

When we received copies of the magazine,
we were excited to find our name and products on page 7!”
Red Rocker Candy received this unsolicited national exposure shortly after Sue
Charney was selected as the 2014 Fluvanna
County Business Person of the Year. When
evaluating nominees for Business Person
of the Year, the Fluvanna County Chamber
takes into consideration a number of elements: community involvement, business
acumen of the owner(s), and how the business has impacted the community.
According to Rudy Garcia, a member Fluvanna County Chamber of Commerce and
owner of Retirement Plan Advisers of Virginia, “Our winner has to be the business person
who does well in all of those areas. Sue obviously has done so and in the tough decision
we had to make she came out on top.”
Red Rocker Candy is available at redrockercandy.com and at the factory store at
92B Industrial Way (near Zion Crossroads).
Product samples are available in the factory

Kents Store business goes big time
BY TRICIA JOHNSON, CORRESPONDENT
Local entrepreneur Chrisy Bossie is
gaining a national reputation for her social
media marketing prowess.
Bossie, the brains behind “Earthegy”, an
online jewelry shop based in Kents Store,
has recently been featured in an article
in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), is included in “Facebook Marketing All-in-One for
Dummies” by Jan Zimmerman, and will
appear as a case study in the next edition
of “Social Media Marketing for Dummies” by
the same author.
The attention she gained after the November 27 WSJ article was “intimidating”
according to Bossie, who added that her
email account was soon flooded with messages from business people looking for help
with their own Facebook accounts.
“I also got a huge influx of orders on that
day,” Bossie said. “It was a great time for
the article to come out because it was Black
Friday,” she added with a laugh, “and I got
swamped with orders which was good.”
Bossie is concerned, though, that the
article made it appear as if she is unhappy
that Facebook has changed the reach of
business Facebook pages, making it necessary for businesses to pay to promote their
posts. “I am not unhappy with Facebook at
all – I will continue to spend money with
them because it works for me and my business,” she said.
Bossie described the genesis of Earthegy
this way on her website, “I was having a
glass of sangria one night with a friend and
she started telling me about her “rocks.”
She then proceeded to pull a pouch of gemstones from her purse and tell me about

Running a cottage industry in rural Fluvanna is a good fit, according to Bossie. “Here
I am, 40 miles from town, doing my thing.
As long as I have a good internet connection, and an excellent post office (and Kents
Store Post Office has served me astronomically well) then I can run my business from
almost anywhere,” she said. “Doing business
in Fluvanna is easy -the taxes are low, I don’t
have to get a special business license – it is
great doing business in Fluvanna.”
There is a down side, however. “My house is
cluttered,” she complained. “There are mailers
under the piano…my workbench is my dining
room table… there are packing supplies in the
spare bedroom. I gave away all of my coats to
Goodwill last year and had shelves put in the
coat closet to organize my stones.”
The irony in the success story of Earthegy
is that Bossie never wanted to be self-employed. “I never wanted to work for myself,”
she said. “I liked knowing every Friday I am
going to get a paycheck, and I liked having
health insurance.” Plus, she admitted, she
never expected to find something that she
likes doing long term by herself. “My interests can change daily. I might be interested
in herb gardening one day and cooking the
next – but my interest in this work has never
changed. I am fascinated by the mythology
behind the stones – the stories,” she said, and
added “Even just the stones themselves, the
colors and shapes – there are just so many
out there that are interesting.” She shrugged
and smiled, “I get to play with pretty rocks all
day. How can you beat that?”

Making a meadow at Pleasant Grove
BY TRICIA JOHNSON, CORRESPONDENT
14 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | December 18, 2014
Many of the bush-hogged fields of
Pleasant Grove Park will soon be replaced by the wild natural beauty of
meadows.
Fluvanna County Parks and Recreation
Director Jason Smith has been working
with Walter Hussy of Rivanna Master
Naturalists; Will Shaw of the Department of Public Works; and representatives from the Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries, John Thompson of the
Cooperative Extension Service; and the
Department of Forestry to develop a plan
that lets nature take its course.
“We have a perfect opportunity at
Pleasant Grove – the gem of Fluvanna
County – to put this region’s natural
history on display,” said Smith. “We are
trying to perfect what nature gave to
us.” Nature trails will wind through the
meadows and the forests of Pleasant
Grove, giving visitors a chance to experience different habitats and perhaps encounter wildlife.
Part of the plan included planting
borders of wildlife-friendly trees in
hedgerows around the meadows. All of
the hedgerows will connect back to existing forest, giving wildlife an avenue to
travel through and around the meadows.
These trees were purchased with a
$2,250 grant from the Thomas Jefferson
Soil and Water Conservation District,
which was sought and won by the Office
of Public Works under Will Shaw. “The
grants supplied us some native trees and
shrubs that are both food and covering species bordering hedgerows,” said
Shaw. Because of the grant, and the willingness of non-profits and other agencies to work together, Fluvanna County
has not had to contribute money to the
program. In fact, the county may end up
saving money, since the fields will no

supposed to revolutionize farming: Kentucky 31 Fescue Grass. This grass, which
became ubiquitous in farms all over the
South during the decades of the 1960s
and 1970s, was prized for its dense structure and cold-hardiness. No one knew
that the grass was literally too dense for
the bobwhite quail to pass through.
“The quail population has catastrophically collapsed,” said Shaw. “One of the
things we will be doing at Pleasant Grove
Park over time is reducing the prominence of fescue, and replacing it with
native grasses and native wildflowers,” he
explained. “We recently spotted our first
two quail at Pleasant Grove,” he added.
Smith has been impressed with
the level of cooperation and support
among non-profits and agencies for this
program. “What it comes down to is community partners like the Rivanna Master
Naturalists, our local extension office,
the Department of Game and Inland
Fisheries, the Thomas Jefferson Soil and
Water Conservation District – all working
together to make it happen,” Smith said.
“The support that we have gotten from
our county administrator and the Board
of Supervisors has been really helpful,”
he added.
The hope is that the meadows, with the
new system of trails, will draw more visitors to Pleasant Grove Park. “A meadow
environment supports so many more
species,” said Shaw. “The more wildlife
species there are, the more there is for
people to look at and enjoy.”
“The Virginia state website has Pleasant
Grove Park as part of the Virginia State Bird
and Wildlife Trail – bird and wildlife enthusiasts are going to get on that website
and learn about what Pleasant Grove Park
has to offer. Another new project in the
works is the pollinator garden, located
behind Pleasant Grove House next to the
Community Garden. This garden will be
used to teach visitors the importance of
the pollinators, and how to support them
in their own gardens.
Eventually the trails will loop around
behind the Fluvanna Library, and
connect to family-friendly trails there
that culminate in a special wildlife educational display in the children’s section
of the library.
“The county has done a good job here,”
said Hussy. “As a citizen of the county, I
like what they are doing on the nature
side, too,” he said. “There is a lot already
here, it isn’t expensive –all they have to
do is just let it go,” he said with a smile.

Fluco sports in review
BY EMILY LESUEUR AND CASSIE HOBBS,
FLUVANNA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM PROGRAM
Emily and Cassie compiled this information with the
oversight of journalism teacher Elizabeth Pellicane
Swim
After a win last week, the Fluco swim team
dove into practices hoping to continue on
their way to a successful season. In addition
to rigorous pool practices three times a week,
they have also been working hard at “Dry
Land practices,” building up body strength
through early morning workouts in the FCHS
weight room twice a week. Up against the
Charlottesville Black Knights on Dec. 9, the
team prepared to dominate once again. The
girls’ team won this meet with a total score of
100, leaving the Knights in the dust.
The boys’ team wasn’t so lucky, falling
just short of another win by only five
points. Despite the loss, the spirit of the
team stayed high. “I hope to improve my
time in freestyle. I’m on the speed team so
I’m always looking for improvement,” said
senior Hunter Hotz. Both teams travel to
take on Harrisonburg on Dec. 19.
Scholastic Bowl
Being the coach of two teams can be a
difficult task, but Jimmy Small takes it all
in stride. “I coach both the Scholastic Bowl
[also known as Academic Team] and swim
and dive teams, so it makes for an eventful
season. Academic team has their practices
in the morning, and swim practices are in
the afternoon. We try not to schedule swim
meets on Wednesdays, as that is when
Scholastic Bowl has their competitions,”
said Small. “My wife jokingly calls herself
‘the swim widow’ during this prodigiously
busy time of year,” he added.
With early morning practices two times
a week, Small prepares Scholastic Bowl
members for questions they could encounter at meets. “Sometimes Mr. Small gets
questions from the official VHSL questions
list. Sometimes he has us read and name
definitions from the dictionary of cultural
literacy. Sometimes he just makes them
up,” said sophomore Sam Conti, who is in
his first year on the team.
After winning their meet at Monticello,
the team traveled Dec. 10 to Powhatan
where they didn’t do as well as hoped. They
played two matches-- beating Louisa and
losing to Western. (As is customary, the host
team did not play.) The team’s next match is
on Jan. 14 at Charlottesville.
Track
With a number of athletes already qualifying for regionals and conference, the team is
ready to fly by focusing on developing younger
members’ skills. “This year is a rebuilding year
for the team with many athletes on the team
that are new to track and field. They are all
working hard in practice and making good
progress,” said Coach Tom Casto.
On Dec. 13 the team traveled to Woodberry for a meet that included four other
schools. Highlights of the meet for the boys’
team included conference-qualifying marks
by Markyll Bland in triple jump, and Andy
Guess and Jack Rice in the 1600m, and Regional Qualifying marks by Travis Moe in
the 1600m and Matt Jonkman in pole vault.
As for the girls’ team, their standout performances included conference-qualifying
marks by Camryn Frederick in the 3200 m,
Hayley Kline in the 3200 m, Saige Haney in

Boys’ Basketball
Last season, the varsity boys’ basketball
team surprised a lot of people when many
of the predicted starters either suffered season-ending injuries or transferred to other
schools. But even with these setbacks, they
managed to play a competitive and successful season. This year looks to be the same,
especially with the return of Vincent Agee
who is playing point guard.
Varsity has already won two games: one,
a 14-point win against Harrisonburg and
the other, a nine-point win against Amherst.
They have one loss, a game against Albemarle which ended with a 70-49 score in
Albemarle’s favor. “We’re doing well, but we
just need to follow our shots,” said sophomore Shemar Williams. They seemed to
take that advice, coming out victorious in
their match against Waynesboro on Dec. 13
where they won by a score of 48-47.
The varsity girls are doing similarly well.
One game ahead of the boys, the varsity
girls’ team has a 2-2 win/loss record, having
come out victorious against Amherst
and Harrisonburg. Their losses against
Waynesboro and Albemarle, though sad,
did nothing to slow the girls down – if anything, they fueled them, especially the Dec.
9 game against Albemarle which they lost
by the close margin of 61-56. “We’re doing
a lot of things well, but we are still getting
used to playing with each other. Once we get
used to playing together, nothing can stop
us,” said senior captain Kianna Childress.
“We’re taking one game at a time so that
we don’t underestimate any competition,”
added fellow senior Morgan Symmers.
Meanwhile, the junior varsity teams
have been playing with just as much heart
and determination, although not the same
results. Despite their resilience, both the
girls’ and boys’ teams have lost all their
matches this season (with the exception of
the boys’ Dec. 13 win against Waynesboro
by a score of 39-41). But they refuse to let
that define them. “My goals are for the team
to work more as a unit,” said eighth grade
junior varsity player Audrey Antesberger.
Forensics
Forensics did extremely well last week,
having come in second in a tournament
that easily contained a dozen or so teams
and hundreds of people. “It wasn’t what I
expected,” said team member Shjon Best. “I
basically walked into the cafeteria to see it
crammed with finely-dressed people. Only,
it wasn’t hectic because everybody knew
what they were doing. It was just a lot of
people sitting around waiting to perform.”
Even during the competition, everything
was still fairly calm. “Everyone separated to
go to the rooms [where] they were assigned.
There, the different teams sat down and took
turns performing for each other, with a judge
in the room to score them,” Best said.
Fluvanna ended up doing very well in
these performances, with many either
placing in the tournament or qualifying for
another. Jonathan Corbin took first in Extemporaneous Speaking and third in Original Oratory; Zach Dobrin and Blake Karaca
took second in Duo; Savannah Forren and
Savannah Nelson took third in Duo; Erin
Edgerton and Casey Johnson took fourth in
Duo; Kara Kline took fourth in Dramatic Per-

Tips for a safe and happy
holiday season
BY TRICIA JOHNSON, CORRESPONDENT
The holiday season is a time for celebrations, shopping, and traveling to visit
friends and family. Unfortunately, it can
also be one of the busiest times of year for
local law enforcement.
“Holiday time is wonderful, but it is also a
time when we tend to have more incidents
and accidents and family disputes,” said
Fluvanna Sheriff Eric Hess. He shared a few
simple things to remember that can help
you and your family have a happy – and
safe – holiday.
• Travel Safely. Obey the speed limit and
look out for distracted drivers. Always
have a designated driver if you will be
consuming alcohol.
• Shop Safely. Lock packages in your trunk.
Be mindful of pickpockets. When you go
shopping, do not go alone. Park in a welllit area. When walking through parking
lots, walk with confidence, stay off your
cell phone, be aware of your surroundings, and have your car keys ready.
• Be aware of children. When driving through
residential areas, be on the lookout for
children who may be playing with new
toys – riding a new bike, for instance – and
who might ride or run out into the street.
• Use Social Media safely. Do not post vacation plans on line. Thieves will know that
you are away, and that your home and
property are easy pickings. Even posting
that you are eating dinner out can give a
criminal all the information he needs to
break into your home.
• Practice patience. Many people have
family staying with them over the holidays or will gather with their families to
celebrate. Unfortunately, families do not
always get along. Count to 10, and try to
appreciate time spent together.
• Be careful with your trash. Don’t put boxes
that expensive items like electronics came
in out by the curb for the trash collectors.
Fold the boxes inside out so the labels do
not show, or cut them down into a size that
will fit into trash bags. Don’t advertise to
criminals what is inside your home!
Lastly, Sheriff Hess urges us to look out for
our family, friends, and neighbors. “Folks that
are alone and folks that lost spouses or siblings
or children – those people tend to be a little depressed over the holidays,” said Hess. “Spending a little extra time with family or neighbors
in those situations is a compassionate thing to
do. It is important to take good care of them.”
Hess said Fluvanna deputies and the state
police will be on the roads over the holiday
season, working to keep residents safe. There
will be sobriety checkpoints, and officers
will be stopping speeders, those who are not
wearing seat belts, and distracted drivers.

Does Aqua Virginia have an impact on
home buyers and sellers at Lake Monticello?
Three local real estate agents think so.
Aqua’s sewer treatment plant on Rt. 600
and at least one sewer lift station on Jefferson Drive near Glen Burnie Road sometimes
have significant odor issues. Though Aqua is
in the middle of fixing the sewer lift station
and will test two new odor-mitigating technologies this winter and next summer, the
smell has persisted in the Lake Monticello
community for quite some time.
Does the odor affect home sales? “It
depends on which direction the wind is
blowing,” said Jay Hurdle of RE/MAX Realty
Specialists, “plus time of year and other
factors.” Years ago Hurdle was the buyer representative for a property across the street
from the sewer lift station near Glen Burnie
Road. When his client bought the house “we
didn’t notice any stench coming from that
pump station,” he said.
Hurdle said he discovered that his buyer
wanted to turn around and sell a few years
later. “That property has probably had three
owners in the last 12 years or so,” he said.
Now Hurdle always tells his clients about
the areas where the odor is most prevalent.
“I don’t have to tell them, but I do,” he said,
“because I’m working for them.”
Hurdle referenced an “obvious” difference
between the rebounding of property values
in Charlottesville and Albemarle and those
in Lake Monticello. “Our properties are not
appreciating quite as robustly as Charlottesville and Albemarle,” he said, “and I really
think part of that has to do with the exorbitant water rates.
“I always mention the water and sewer
rates to clients,” Hurdle continued, “especially when I’m with brand new people who
are just exploring the possibility of moving
to Lake Monticello.” And sure enough, he
said, some of them tell him, “Well, we’ll just
scratch Lake Monticello off our list.”
Patsy Strong of Strong Team Realtors
offered a different perspective. “Our buyer’s
agent didn’t feel that they had lost any sales
because of the water issue,” she said. “But I
see as a seller’s agent lots of people moving
from the Lake because of the water rates.”
Sure, buyers are sometimes “shocked” by
the water and sewer rates, Strong said, “but
that isn’t the determining factor in whether
they buy the house or not. But sellers – a
lot of them are on fixed incomes, and they
are watching it very carefully, and they are
making the decision to leave the Lake based
on water rates.” Some of them move out
into Fluvanna County, she said, while others
move back home.
Vicki Wilson of Monticello Country Realtors agreed that when her clients request
utility bills, some of them are “concerned”
about the water and sewer bills. “It has an
impact for a lot of families, young and old,”
she said. “It’s an outrageous cost. It is huge.
Yes, they’ll tell me on the phone they don’t
want to look at Lake Monticello and one of
the main concerns is the water bills. They’d
rather live in Fluvanna County and not at the
Lake because of the water.”
Wilson explained that people only have
so much to spend on monthly payments,
and when they realize their water bill will
be as high as it is, they end up with less to
spend on a monthly mortgage payment.
But Wilson also pointed out the benefits of
having a water and sewer system. “We don’t
have to deal with septic,” she said, “and it’s
probably a better thing for the community
that we don’t have septic close to the lake.”
Regardless of the water bills Wilson,
Strong and Hurdle emphasized that people
are still buying at the Lake because of all
the other amenities it has to offer. “I’ve lived
here for 18 years and raised my kids here,”
Wilson said. “It is a wonderful place to live.
Our homeowners’ association fees are lower
than in Northern Virginia or anywhere else.”
It's really, really good!

For the past five years Fluvanna Rotary
Club has been helping social services
with those children and seniors that may
not get any holiday gifts. This year they
were given a list of 18 individuals that requested various items such as clothing,
LEGOs, board games, trucks, cars, DVDs,
Mickey Mouse slippers, pajamas, Hello
Kitty, Baby dolls, and bed comforters.
The Fluvanna Rotary Club membership donates time and money to various
organizations in Fluvanna such as a high
school scholarship, food bank, SPCA,
adult education, Meals on Wheels, Habitat
for Humanity, medical, winter coats,
shoes and backpacks for school children.
The object of Rotary is to “encourage
and foster the ideal of service as a basis
of worthy enterprise.” The statement
then lists four areas by which this “ideal
of service” is fostered: “through the development of acquaintance as the opportunity for service; the promotion of
high ethical standards in business and
professions; through service in one’s
personal, business and community life;
and the advancement of international
understanding, goodwill and peace.
The Fluvanna Rotary Club meets
every Wednesday morning at 7:30 at
Ashlawn Grille.

Kids and cops have a wonderful day
BY TRICIA JOHNSON, CORRESPONDENT
Each child was accompanied by an officer,
who helped them find the toys they wanted,
and helped them keep track of how much
money they could spend. Many children purchased a toy for themselves, but were also
careful to make purchases for their siblings.
It was obvious that the event meant as
much to the adults as it did to the children.
Deputy Lacorie Steppe is motivated by a
desire to serve his community. “I love kids,”
Steppe said. “I love to give back and help
the community. I want to show the kids that
we are here to help.”
“I do this pretty much every year,” said
Master Deputy Keith Ayers. “I like giving back
to the kids. They are sometimes afraid of the
police,” Ayers explained, “and we are trying
to teach them that we are here to help.”

Four Fluvanna children, along with four
off-duty members of the Fluvanna sheriff’s
office and Sheriff Eric Hess, joined children
and members of law enforcement from
Nelson and Albemarle counties to make
Christmas wishes come true.
Sue Davies, principal of Central Elementary,
has been coordinating “Kids and Cops Holiday
Shop” for seven years. “It is very rewarding,”
said Davies. “It is a wonderful way for our children to get to know the law enforcement officers, and for the officers to get to know the
children, in a casual atmosphere.”
“I work very closely with the Toy Lift
Foundation. How many children we can
serve every year depends on how much
money is raised,” Davies explained. “People
who want to donate to the cause can make

donations to the Toy Lift Foundation, and
designate the donation to go to Kids and
Cops Holiday Shop.”
In a private dining room at the Wood
Grill Buffet in Charlottesville, the children
shared a table with their local law enforcement officers, and talked about the toys
they were going to buy. “The Wood Grill
Buffet actually donates these lunches for
the children and the officers,” said Davies,
who added that the children and the officers really connect over lunch.
After lunch, the group went out to the
parking lot, where police cars were examined and lights and sirens were demonstrated. Then came the highlight of the event – a
shopping spree at Toys R Us sponsored by
the Toy Lift Foundation.
Deputy Karen Chambers smiled at the
little girl in her care. “I have a passion for
children – I want to make sure they do well.
I love being with kids,” she added, “and I
want to be sure they get what they deserve.”
“A love for the kids is why I do it,” said
Deputy B. J. Henson. “We volunteer for this,
and it is a great experience. I look forward
to it every year,” she added.
“I have repeat officers that come back
every year,” confirmed Davies. “I have
ones that sign up a year ahead of time. The
sheriff has been with me several years too,”
she said, “even before he was sheriff.”
“It is just a wonderful day,” said Davies
with a smile.
