Our senior students and our student leaders were very excited, which augurs well for a busy year filled with lots of opportunities to show case their leadership. This week our student leaders were involved in a number of activities, beginning with the preparation for Lent and our launch for Project Compassion. Lent is the season where Catholics spend time in reflection and preparation for the death and resurrection of Jesus. The need for people to take stop and reflect is increasingly important as we try to navigate our way through times of global insecurity. What difference does a man who died over 2,000 years ago make to our lives now? The answer can be life changing. Jesus preached messages of love, forgiveness, acceptance and respect for human dignity. Imagine the difference in the world if these messages became a living reality? Our students are endeavouring to live out these messages. February 20th marks the UN Social Justice day, they will be advocating for the under represented in our society, the ATSI people. Our students from the 2014 Garma Immersion program are passionate about getting the “RECOGNISE” message out to the rest of the student body. RECOGNISE is concerned with the ATSI people’s right to represented in our constitution as a step to working towards Reconciliation. They will continue to be the voice for the ATSI peoples on March 19th with the “Close the Gap” campaign where they will again highlight the issues confronting our Indigenous people to the other students. These issues are political issues – but they are in essence issues, which can serve to uphold human dignity, and in this time of preparation and reflection for Lent what a pertinent way to begin the season. Lent is not just a time for giving up chocolate, or any other means of self-deprivation – it is a time to reflect on the life of Jesus and to live out those gospel values. Kind regards Mrs Raechel Fletcher Assistant Principal Religious Education and Identity From the Counselling Team Mindfulness is the acceptance of one’s attention on the thoughts, emotions and physical sensations happening in a given moment. It is a way of ‘paying attention’ in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. Mindfulness is a practice that aims to bring your attention to the present experience on a moment to moment basis. Generally, there are two ways to be ‘mindful’. There is a formal approach; a set meditation session dedicated to focussing on the body, breath or physical sensations. Informal mindfulness can happen anywhere, at anytime in your day. It is the mindful attention to everyday life. Quieting the mind, taking a moment to breathe, noticing something beautiful. There is some great science behind the practice of mindfulness. Regular practice has been found to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety, help with sleep difficulties and improve your sense of general well-being. Hope your week goes well. A Mindfulness Meditation Mindfulness meditation can be practiced sitting with eyes closed, cross-legged on a cushion, or on a chair, with the back straight. Attention is put on the movement of the abdomen when breathing in and out, or on the awareness of the breath as it goes in to and out of the nostrils. As thoughts come up, return to focusing on breathing. You can notice that your mind has wandered, but in an accepting, non-judgmental way. Meditators start with short periods of 2 to 3 minutes or so a day. As one practices regularly, it becomes easier to keep the attention focused on breathing. Eventually awareness of the breath can be extended into awareness of thoughts, feelings and actions. On this front we will be hosting some events next week to enhance that feeling of welcome. New year 9-12 students were invited to a luncheon on Tuesday 10 February in Bobbio. An annual event that aims to provide the new older students the chance to meet some new people and make more connections within the community as they begin their journey with STC. Further to this we will also be hosting a luncheon for the Indigenous students of STC on Thursday at first break. Both luncheons are a permanent feature on the STC calendar and well received by the students and staff involved. One upcoming information session that may be of interest to parents is a workshop relating to easing student anxiety. Further information to come on this topic with a firm date but week six of the term is planned at this stage. We are blessed to have three qualified psychologists on staff in our Counselling team and they will be able to share some tips and provide strategies for parents to assist their students and maximise their opportunities at STC during these sessions. Year 12 students driving cars: Parents it is essential that if your son or daughter is driving to school that they register with the office their car details. Further to this all passengers of students driving must be registered. All forms are available through our office staff so can I please urge you to ensure your son/daughter has registered their car and potential passengers. Parents if you do notice irresponsible driving from our senior students please feel free to email me and I will follow up with the students concerned. McKean Street safety concerns: We have been contacted by the local council regarding student drop offs on McKean Street before school. A gentle reminder that the McKean Street drop off area is 2min standing area only. Please do not park and leave your car as you may find a $75 reminder left on your windscreen from the council. If you need to visit the school in the morning there are plenty of parks in the back car park. A reminder that there should be no drop off in the College top car park in the morning. On a positive note in general the uniform presentation of the students has been of a high standard. Keep up the good work students. If any uniform issues do arise and your child may be out of uniform can you please send them with a note explaining the issue and when it will be rectified. As always the Senior Leadership Team and the House Leaders are available to answer any questions relating to your son or daughters wellbeing. Do not hesitate to ring or email. Uniform and Grooming: To start the year in a positive manner can I please ask you to support your child in making positive uniform choices. Specifically shoes – Black, lace-up, school shoes (Not leather street shoes eg: Vans, Nike, Converse) are the only acceptable shoes. A new school year has begun so it's time to get focused on ditching any post-holiday lethargy and actively making this your most successful year yet. The following tips will help ensure this year is a memorable one. Ready, Set, Goal! - Get clear on what you are aiming to achieve this year and re-commit to it daily. Make it meaningful to you and you'll find it easier to stick to. Prepare To Learn – Commit yourself to removing distractions including television, Facebook, and other technology for at least a few hours at a time, so you can focus entirely on learning. You will improve more rapidly. Prioritise – Each week, work out one thing you could do in each subject to improve your results. Then do it. Create Positive Relationships – Build rapports with as many people as you can, including parents, teachers, and friends. Avoid spending time with people who actively bring you down. Develop Better Time Management – During school you should spend more time focused on and listening to the teacher, as well as taking notes. This will save you spending hours at home trying to catch-up on topics learned in class. Play More – Get outside and exercise whenever you feel your concentration fading. If you’re in class, just stretch or stand up for a few minutes. Getting your blood flowing is a great and easy way to ensure you stay focussed. MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING PROGRAM Australian Mobile Recycling was founded in September 2011. Their aim is to collect as many used and unwanted mobile phones as possible. All mobile phones will be recycled for reuse, which means they will be refurbished for resale. Handsets are restored to factory conditions and all Sim card and memory cards are destroyed. Any phones that are beyond repair will be broken down into their constituent parts and recycled by Australian licensed recyclers. For our recycling efforts our school will receive $3 for every mobile phone returned. Your contribution will not only raise money for our school community but also help the environment in a positive way by reducing waste. BRING IN YOUR OLD MOBILE PHONES and place in the box at the school office student counter. The award is hard to come by as only one primary and one secondary school student was chosen from each school sport region for their sporting achievements throughout 2014. Chloe is a talented athlete representing her region in Soccer, Athletics, Cross Country as well as playing for the mighty maroon (QLD) in Touch Football. Chloe attended the awards luncheon where Australian cricketer Ian Healy presented her with her award. Chloe said she, 'felt very proud and privileged to receive this award'. During the lunch, Chloe was able to speak to some of Queensland’s great sporting heroes as well as listen to them being interviewed in relation to their own sporting achievements. The speech that made 760 guests rise to their feet… On Monday Lucky Patterson a Year 11 student was a guest of honour at the Stumped Healy Bowled Warne Function at City Hall in Brisbane. The proud mother of Lucky said ‘her speech was captivating’. This young woman delivered an inspirational speech beyond her years. After delivering her off the cuff speech all 760 guests rose to their feet to give the swimmer a standing ovation. It bought her mother to tears. The guest list included the Education Minister, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane and Queensland’s finest past and present athletes. The all-time great cricketer Ian Healy founds the Future State Greats Foundation. Lucky received numerous emails and letters saying how eye opening her speech was. To top it off her swimming idols Cate & Bronte Campbell, Melanie and Christopher Wright plus many more wrote her a personal message about her speech. Once again Lucky undoubtedly did St Columban’s proud. Sights set high for swimmer Year 10 student - Kirrily Siebenhausen Year 10 St Columban’s student Kirrily Siebenhausen has her sights set on getting good results at the upcoming age and open national championships in Sydney. She is high on confidence after a Silver medal in the 200m freestyle and a Bronze medal in the 100m freestyle at the recent Queensland Swimming Championships. Kirrily was really happy with her recent results as it was her first state placing’s in her third state titles. The youngest club representative is now looking to ‘swim faster and place higher’ at the Age Championships and gain meet experience at the open championships in April. Kirrily is looking for sponsors to help her reach her goals. Please phone Derek Siebenhausen on 0420 979 213 if you can help. Ben Schmidtchen Year 10 student - Won a Silver Medal in Long Jump Over the school holidays Ben attended the All Schools National Championships. Despite carrying a nasty cold he went on to win a silver medal in long jump with a jump of 6.48m in the Under 16 Men’s. This was an awesome result given the fact that he was so sick and was competing against mostly 15 year olds. Corey Cumner Year 11 student- Bronze Medal Winner in the State Surf Rescue Championships Corey recently won a bronze medal at the State Surf Rescue Championships last weekend. He won Bronze Champion lifesaver in his Under 15’s age group. The purpose of the event is to determine who is best lifesaver in the state. This is determine by participating in events on the beach which include a beach sprint, surf rescue board, surf swim and surf rescue tube race. The tube race consists of attaching a tube on yourself and then swimming out to the can. The person who can reach their patient first to perform a rescue determines the winner. They are also tested on resuscitation techniques and are marked out of 40 points and a theory paper, which is also worth 40 points. Corey is on the reserve list to compete at the Australian titles in this event as only first and 2nd have automatic selection. Over next couple of months Corey will compete in other events such as the Sunshine Coast Branch Titles, State Titles and Australian Surf Life Saving Titles. Absentee Hot Line: 5433 7366 (24 hours a day) 13 Daniel O’Brien Year 12 Student – Telling it how it is! Daniel has attended two trips to Canberra already this year, one being the National Mathematic Summer School at the Australian National University. Whilst at the University he studied Number Theory, Projective Geometry and Topology, along with 67 of the brightest minds in Australia. It was very competitive and Daniel felt ‘ very proud to be the first student from St Columban’s to have been invited to attend’. The second trip was to Canberra where he stayed at the Australian Institute of Sport. Daniel attended the Regional Heywire Youth Summit February where he was one of 37 young Australians between the ages of 16-22 whom was selected based upon a non-fictional story entry. The topic was called ‘Telling it how it is’. His entry was on his current work placement at the Caboolture hospital. His entry can be found at abc.net.au/heywire under the ‘winners’ category. Daniel said ‘ this trip was possibly my proudest achievement in his whole life, as the goal of this summit was to creature ideas, products or services to combat issues youth face in rural, and regional Australia’. They also tackled issues but not limited to the following: Sexual, Relationship & Domestic Violence, Alcoholism, Agriculture, Mental Health and Racism. The group Daniel was apart of tackled the issue of Sexual, Relationship & Domestic Violence. He worked alongside five other incredible people, spending up to 12 hours each day for 5 days developing what we call, Generation Aware. On Thursday 12th February, Daniel’s team had to pitch their Generation Aware, to an audience of Senators, Ministers, Federal MPs, CEOs, ABC Sponsors and members of the general public in the Parliament House Theatre, in the hopes that our campaign will be picked up by a community (or communities) using the Foundation for Rural, Regional, Renewal’s $10 000 grants provided (There were only 10 available). Below is an excerpt from Daniel’s pitch (about ⅓ of our pitch), outlining what our product is and how it might be implemented in a community: “Generation Aware is a merchandise campaign with the purpose of reducing stigma and creating an entire generation aware of the issues of relationship violence and sexual violence. The merchandise will be customizable so each community can create a shirt relevant to the epidemic of relationship and sexual violence in their area. Our aim is to launch at schoolies all over Australia and hopefully partner with organisations such as Red Frogs, 1800 Respect, and Youth Gas. Along with his pitch, his group had the initiate to create prototypes of the shirt. A photo is attached below. TAS Sport News Tennis We’ve had a great start to our 2015 girls tennis season, with the Year 7s first time in the competition. I have been so impressed with our Year 7 and 8 girls for their enthusiasm and efforts so far, with many of the girls never having played competition before. Our Year 7 team consisting of Remi Hinckesman, Katie Blaxland, Emily White and Natalie Mai showed true Columban spirit and should be pleased with themselves for their efforts to date. Player of the week goes to Remi Hinckesman for her 6-1 win in her singles. Our Year 8 team of Elle-Louise Kidd, Jacinta Ginano, Taylor Powell and Rory Krohn are also new to the competition and were worthy competitors against a much more experienced Canterbury side. Player of the week goes to Rory Krohn for her spirit and fighting effort in both singles and doubles. Well done to all the girls! The Year 9 team consisting of Chyna McLatchy, Georgia Hyland, Holly Baxter, Ebony Butler and Makayla De Rossi had an amazing game on Saturday with their first win of the season. The girls just scraped in to win 25 – 24 games! It was a tough battle for all the girls, and they all deserve to be named Player of the Week! Congratulations to our Year 10 team of Tiffany McErlane, Brianna Van Der Meer, Ella Connolly, Kathleen Nichols and Josie Ferguson who had their second, and very convincing win, of the season. The girls won 36 – 5 games. Player of the Week goes to Brianna Van Der Meer for her positive attitude resulting in strong wins in both doubles and singles. The Open A girls have come up against a very solid opposition this weekend. Bryah Guilfoyle still delivered a solid performance in her singles but in spite of a strong performance in doubles it just wasn’t enough to get over the line in a very tight match. While all the other players put in a genuine effort this time the opposition was just too consistent in their performance and we only managed to win a single match overall. The story was similar in the Open B games. Once again, Melina Lock delivered a solid, aggressive performance and recorded a convincing win in her singles. Nevertheless, the opposition was just too strong for our girls. They did try hard but needed more consistency in their stroke-making and better communication in their doubles. Margie Hallinan & Jozef Friedman Absentee Hot Line: 5433 7366 (24 hours a day) 14 Basketball 14 February 2015 – Basketball (vs Canterbury College) 1sts This weeks game was against the defending champion TAS team last year of Canterbury College. We started the game slowly falling behind by 7 points early but rallied to be in front at the half. Solid defensive efforts across the team as well as some strong offensive rebounding helped us claw the lead back. In the third quarter some sharp shooting by Sarah and Ash saw us take a 5 point lead to the final break. Unfortunately in the final term our shots just wouldn't drop while Canterbury hit 3 long range buckets to take the lead. A last minute steal and fast break layup by Jess wasn't enough for our girls to get across the line but it was a message to the competition that we are here to win this comp. With a few more training sessions under our belt I have no doubt the girls with be leading the way at seasons end. 2nds After a loss last week, the 2nd fired back with a great victory. Scoring a solid 32-18 win against Canterbury College brought much confidence leading into round 4. With contributions all round, the girls played a fast-paced strategic game that allowed them to demonstrate their skills and teamwork. U15 The U15 girls have shone brightly once again for a 42-16 win against Canterbury College. Starting with only 4 players, the girls played with commitment and intensity any coach would be proud of. Once we had our full team, the girls played an up-tempo game, with excellent contributions from all players especially in defence. Year 8 Basketball 13-10 to StC The girls had a great match against Canterbury this week. They all played really well as a team, a great effort after last weeks rained out game. End score was 13-10, looking forward to making it 2/2 next week. Miss Flew Year 7 Basketball Team Arriving at the court on Saturday morning, our little team was in for a shock when we saw a team of girls taller than all of us, however this did not faze them, and every girl kept their head in the game. With great defence by Jaz Barrett and awesome boxing out by Bree Skinner, from the very start, the game was in our control. Emma Filipo and Nat Hobson took every chance they were given to score, and it was great to see every girl gaining confidence and taking shots, leading to our first win with a score of 24-14. The difference between our first game and this weeks game is amazing, the girls improved out of site. Keep up the good work, from Jess and Ash Cricket STC V’s Canterbury College Open 1sts Cricket Players arrived to wet and dreary conditions on Saturday morning and with more showers looming the start of play was delayed reducing the match to a 45 over contest. STC won the toss and elected to bowl with some moisture still in the synthetic pitch. The decision turned out to be a good one with STC bowlers keeping to a good line and length, restricting Canterbury to 9/121 off their 45 overs. C. Gardner (3/12) and K. Webber (2/12) were the standout bowlers with J. Burbridge, P. Arnold and C. Dougherty also picking up wickets. With conditions improving our opening pair of team captain T. Hammond and C. Foote made the most of a drying pitch to combine for a first wicket partnership of 64. C. Foote then went on to reach an impressive 51 not out and combined with P. With the College population now over 1000 it is expected that parents support their child by transporting them to some TAS fixtures. As a community it is hoped that car pooling is used when necessary. Buses will be run to the following College’s for TAS ‘away’ fixtures and events in 2015: Redeemer Lutheran College (Rochedale) West Moreton Anglican College (West Ipswich) St John’s Anglican College (Forest Lake) Canterbury College (Waterford) TAS Swimming TAS Cross Country TAS Athletics Buses will cater for all students to attend the Swimming, Cross country and Athletics carnivals, but students wishing to catch a bus for Saturday sport MUST sign on by the Wednesday (3 days) prior to the games so that buses can be booked to meet the demand required and meet the booking deadline provided by the bus companies to secure drivers. Private transport will be needed to other TAS venues. It is expected that we work as a community and car pool students to fixtures if difficulties arise. Please start to make transport arrangements now so that families are organised for the up coming season. Please refer to the College calendar for TAS fixture details. With greater numbers of parents attending ‘away’ fixtures the atmosphere and support for the students should boost team morale and performance. TAS Wet Weather Information As we often compete against schools that are not from our local area the weather can vary greatly. It may be raining in Caboolture but be dry at our competition venue so please always assume that TAS fixtures will take place. The first point of call will be to check the College App – if sport is cancelled a message will be sent to all who have registered for the App. If you are unable to access the APP the TAS Sports Coordinator can be contacted on 0407 580 891 from 6.30am on a fixture day. It is difficult to make a decision before this time. TAS Weekly Draw The St Columban’s College App is the first point of Call to access any information about TAS sports, including the Draw. The other places that the draw can be accessed are in the newsletter each week, or also on the College Blog that can be accessed via the College Website – www.stc.qld.edu.au Ms Michelle Wust Sports Co-ordinator [email protected] Mob: 0407 580 891 Absentee Hot Line: 5433 7366 (24 hours a day) 17 Professional Hair Salon In StC Trade Training Centre.
