First was Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World, which closed in January and will travel to Chapultepec this summer. Opening the day Contested Visions closed was In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States, a mesmerizing exhibition now on view in the Resnick Pavilion that was co-organized with the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, where it will travel after a stop at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec. And now we are gearing up for the April 1 opening of Children of the Plumed Serpent: The Legacy of Quetzalcoatl in Ancient Mexico—a stunning assembly of frescoes, codices, ceramics, and other objects produced in Mesoamerica between ad 900 and 1521. Our collaborations in Mexico and South America are not limited to exhibitions mounted at lacma. Last year curator Stephen Markel assembled works from our permanent collection of ancient Indian art—one of the best such collections in the world—for exhibition in Mexico City, followed by a second venue in Santiago, Chile; India’s Universe is the first major exhibition of pre-modern Indian art to be seen in either country. India’s Universe is one of nearly a dozen lacma-organized exhibitions traveling the globe in the next twelve months. The incredible work of our dedicated curators will be appreciated in museums around the U.S. as well as in Germany, France, Denmark, Qatar, and more. In other words, lacma is as active around the world as it is right here on campus—and there is plenty happening here, too. In addition to In Wonderland and the upcoming Children of the Plumed Serpent, we will open a retrospective of photographer Robert Adams in March, joining other shows currently on view such as Ellsworth Kelly: Prints and Paintings and California Design, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way.” It is because of your ongoing support that we are able to accomplish these incredible endeavors, at home and abroad. Michael Govan ceo and Wallis Annenberg Director Questions or comments about Connect? Please e-mail Scott Tennent at [email protected]. news & highlights 50 William Eggleston Photographs Added to Collection lacma has acquired fifty photographs by William Eggleston, widely recognized as one of the most influential photographers of the last half-century. The artworks, which span four decades of Eggleston’s career and include images from his series Los Alamos (1965–74), Lost and Found (1965–74), 2¼ (1999), and others, were added to the museum’s collection thanks to a generous gift from Caldecot Chubb, former director of the Eggleston Artistic Trust. A number of the newly acquired photographs were also featured in 2010 lacma exhibition William Eggleston: Democratic Camera—Photographs and Video, 1961–2008. The acquisition adds to lacma’s growing photography collection, recently enhanced by other major acquisitions including the art and archives of Robert Mapplethorpe, acquired jointly with the Getty in 2011, and the Marjorie and Leonard Vernon Collection, acquired in 2008. attracted a great depth and range of press coverage, from local outlets such as nbc, the Los Angeles Times, and kcrw, to national stories in npr and USA Today, and circling the globe to bbc, China Daily, and Korea Herald. Metropolis II is on view Fridays through Sundays. Visit lacma.org for specific operating times. In Wonderland Earns Rave Los Angeles Times critic Christopher Knight calls In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States an “engrossing” exhibition that “explodes the tale” of surrealism as a Eurocentric, male-dominated art form. Knight singles out highlights such as Dorothea Tanning’s 1942 painting Birthday, Frida Kahlo’s double self-portrait, and other works by Remedios Varo and Gertrude Abercrombie, as well as lesser-known artists like Kati Horna and Julia Thecla. Seven works by Kahlo featured in the exhibition earn special praise: “The show’s sprawling size provides a welcome artistic context for Kahlo, one of the 20th century’s most famous painters,” he writes. “Accompanied by so many Surrealist women, Kahlo can be appreciated for her work, rather than for her singular biography.” In Wonderland is on view through May 6. South Asian Sculpture Gallery Reinstalled Metropolis II Attracts Crowds, Coverage Chris Burden’s Metropolis II, on long-term loan to lacma courtesy of the Nicolas Berggruen Charitable Foundation, has garnered acclaim from visitors and news sources. Since opening on January 14, the large-scale kinetic sculpture has been seen by more than 50,000 viewers, both young and old. The sculpture has also Located on the fourth floor of the Ahmanson Building, lacma’s gallery for South Asian sculpture has recently been reinstalled. The new presentation features thirtyfour objects and emphasizes masterpieces and new acquisitions. Objects on view include the collection’s signature work, The Hindu God Shiva as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, c. 950–1000, and new acquisitions such as Shivalinga, a late-fourth-century sandstone, and a seventeenth-century wooden sculpture, The Hindu Goddess Kali. lacma Exhibitions Open in Santiago, Doha, Berlin, u.s. This spring five exhibitions organized or co-organized by lacma are traveling to other venues around the world. India’s Universe: Masterworks from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which collects 150 objects from lacma’s permanent collection of ancient Indian art, will open this month at the Centro Cultural Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago, Chile—the first major exhibition of ancient Indian art to go on view in that country. Also in March, Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts, which was on view at lacma last year, will open at the Islamic Museum of Art in Doha, Qatar. One of the inaugural exhibitions in the Resnick Pavilion, Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700–1915, which features fashionable dress from a recent major collection acquisition, will travel to the Deutsche Historisches Museum on April 27. Additionally, two more lacma-organized exhibitions have recently opened in the United States: David Smith: Cubes and Anarchy is currently on view at the Wexner Center for the Visual Arts in Columbus, Ohio, and Asco: Elite of the Obscure, a Retrospective, 1972–1987 is on view at the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, Massachusetts. left: William Eggleston, Untitled, 1970, from Los Alamos, 1965–1968 and 1972–74 (published 2003), gift of Caldecot Chubb, © Eggleston Artist Trust, courtesy Cheim & Read, New York above: The Hindu God Shiva as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, India, Tamil Nadu, c. 950–1000, anonymous gift lacma.org/exhibitions Children of the Plumed Serpent April 1–July 1, 2012 | Resnick Pavilion Member Preview Days: March 29–31 Children of the Plumed Serpent: The Legacy of Quetzalcoatl in Ancient Mexico is the first large-scale exploration of ancient kingdoms of southern Mexico and their patron deity, Quetzalcoatl, the human incarnation of the Plumed Serpent. Through codices, gold, ceramics, and textiles, this exhibition traces the extensive trade networks that facilitated the spread of the International Style and a pictographic writing system. These communities successfully resisted both Aztec and later Spanish subjugation, thriving in an era of international entrepreneurship. Featuring more than two hundred objects, Children of the Plumed Serpent highlights the extraordinary aesthetic achievements of the peoples who became, and remain today, the Children of the Plumed Serpent. This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities. It was supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, by the Ethnic Arts Council of Los Angeles, and by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. The Los Angeles presentation was made possible in part by lacma’s Wallis Annenberg Director’s Endowment Fund. The organizers are grateful for the special collaboration of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (conaculta), Mexico, and the National Institute for Anthropology and History (inah), Mexico. The Place We Live is a retrospective of Adams’s major projects, featuring nearly three hundred photographs, including his seminal series The New West, Summer Nights, and Turning Back. Renowned for his epic, influential chronicling of the American experience, Adams approaches the places around him with a bare honesty that reveals man’s fraught presence in the landscape, along with great beauty and hope. This exhibition was organized by the Yale University Art Gallery. The Los Angeles presentation was made possible in part by lacma’s Wallis Annenberg Director’s Endowment Fund.
