This Saturday, May 16th, Freya Lodge will be celebrating Syttende Mai with a luncheon at 1:00 pm. There will be traditional
Norwegian foods to enjoy as well as games for the kids. Earlier in the
morning on May 16th, Freya’s Viking boat Raven, will be “sailing” in the
annual Luther Burbank Rose Parade. Laurel Proaps will be marshalling
her Viking crew in the Rose Parade and they will all join us later, along
with Raven, at Norway Hall for the Syttende Mai festivities that afternoon.
The last week in April, a number of Freya Lodge members,
myself included, travelled to Decorah, Iowa to visit Vesterheim, the
Norwegian American Museum. It was an action packed tour organized by Freya’s Vice-President Anne-Marie Winterhalder. We enjoyed three special tours of the museum and visited other sites
around Decorah. For one of the days on the tour, Vesterheim also
organized a special woodcarving class with Vesterheim Gold Medalist
in woodcarving, Rebecca Hanna. Several of our members will be sharing their stories as well as photos of this wonderful trip in the Freya
Forum. We hope to have other lodge trips in the future, so be sure
to stay tuned for all our special events in Freya Forum’s calendar of
events.
Saturday morning remember to cheer on “Raven” and her Viking crew in the Rose Parade and celebrate Norwegian Constitution
Day – Syttende Mai at 1:00 pm with a special festive luncheon at Norway Hall.
Hipp, hipp hurra for Syttende Mai!

Hip Hip Hurrah! Syttende Mai is just
around the corner so get out your Norwegian
colors, flags, ribbons, and your Norwegian spirit
and join us on May 16th at the lodge where we
will celebrate Syttende Mai. The day will start off
with the Santa Rosa Rose Parade and anyone
who would like to fill our boat, the Raven, with
good cheer and lots of smiles come join us. We
are looking for children to fill the boat. As our
entry will characterize the story of Pippi
Longstocking it would be fun to wear missmatched stockings. Bring your children, grandchildren and friends to walk beside the boat to
represent Freya Lodge in this years parade.
Come and share in the fun celebrating our Norwegian heritage and Syttende Mai.
After the parade, all are invited to the
lodge for a smorgasbord lunch at 1 PM.
There will be hot dogs for the kids and yes, plenty of ice cream for all to enjoy! This is a traditional family event and we will have a childrens
parade and games for the kids at the lodge.
Come and enjoy sack races, bean bag toss games
and a chance to win prizes. Invite your friends
and family to enjoy a day of fun festivities. Hope
to see you on Syttende Mai, May 16th at the
lodge. Whew, that is going to be a fun day but
we are not done yet! Mark your calendars now
for June 3rd to attend our New Member
Meet and Greet Open House event which
will be from 6 – 8 pm. The evening program
will be at 7pm. Come and enjoy and evening of
traditional Scandinavian foods such as
Krumkake, Rosettes or Smorbrod while learning
how to make one of these tasty delicacies. Come
and watch a demonstration on Norwegian Rosemaling or get tips on how to trace your
family tree with an expert Norwegian genealogist. Learn about our beautiful camping site in the
mountains, Camp Norge, and all of the activities that you can participate in as a member of
Freya Lodge. This event is free to the public.
Come and welcome our new members and invite your friends who might be interested in
learning more about Scandinavian culture and
history. This is a great way to
explore the benefits of joining
Freya Lodge, Sons of Norway.
We look forward to
seeing you at the next two
events. Also, come and talk
to some of us who recently took a trip back to
Vesterheim Museum in Decorah, Iowa. We had a
wonderful time learning so much about Norwegian heritage and also participating in a wood
carving class. Our group was the first Sons of
Norway Lodge to attend the Vesterheim Museum. Quite an honor! A big thank you goes out
to Anne-Marie Winterhalder for organizing
this trip. We enjoyed beautiful weather as we
visited Seed Savers Exchange Heritage Farm and
toured Harmony, Iowa visiting many Amish
farms. Even though we are of Scandinavian descent, we found out that we are considered the
“English” by the Amish people. It was like stepping back in time for me. To round off our trip,
we attended a “Murder Mystery Dinner at Winneshiek Wildberry Winery. Ask John Hill about
his “moving” representation of a special character in the Murder Mystery program! We also
enjoyed two evenings at Luther College where
we were privileged to hear the Luther College
Cathedral Choir which just finished the their
Spring 2015 tour and Luther College Jazz Band
and the Oneota Quartet. Thank you Anne-Marie
for organizing this wonderful trip.
Hope to see you all on May 16th as we celebrate Syttende Mai. Come and participate in the
Santa Rosa Rose Parade and help to represent
our lodge on our boat the Raven. Round off the
day at our lodge with a smorgasbord lunch at
1pm. See you then!
Happy May

Camp Trollfjell News
Instructors Still Needed!!
We still need a Rosemaling Teacher and
Folk Dancing Instructor. Can you volunteer? Can you give of your talents to the
young people, 8-13 years of age, for two
weeks from July 12-25th? Visit
www.sofn6.org/arv and read about us.
Calling all Creative Campers!
As you know Camp Trollfjell is coming back again this summer under the new leadership of
Erik Peters and Clayton Davis. Among other changes being brought to camp this year, like
the newly updated camp website and a camp store, we have decided to do something new
and exciting with the t‐shirts we give to campers and staff. In past years, the design for the
shirts have been made by camp staff and in more recent years, the same design has been
used year after year. So we have decided to let the new design for this summer come from
the youth throughout district 6.
All contestants will have their designs posted on the camp website and Facebook page. Voting will take place on our Facebook page. The theme for camp this year is “changes.” The
prizes for 1st through 3rd place go as follows:



1st place will have their design put on the shirts for this summer and receive $25 credit
for the camp store
2nd place will receive $10 credit for the camp store
3rd place will receive $5 credit for the camp store
To enter this contest, send your design to [email protected] by June 1st.
Good Luck contestants!
Sincerely,
Clayton Davis

Raven Revival
The boat team is finishing the revival of Raven, our Viking boat, for the Rose Parade. The project has included
pressure washing, sanding, and painting the hull; replacing three seats, and repairing the fourth; and making a removable flat floor to provide better footing during the parade.
The team includes Don Coates, Darryl Laxo, Bill Seimering, Cathan Potter, and Larry Olsen.
See you at the parade!

Skal to Aquavit Made in the USA
When you think of aquavit you probably think of Norway’s Linie Aquavit, the most widely available in the US,
right? Well did you know there are several aquavits on the market that are distilled right here in the United
States? Derived from the words aqua vitae, Latin for water of life, aquavit is a popular Scandinavian liquor and
Norway’s national drink. Typically yellowish in tint and distilled with grain or potatoes, the liquor is spiced with
a variety of herbs including caraway, cardamom, cumin, anise, fennel, and citrus peel.
Here are four of the more prominent American made Aquavits:
Vikre Øvrevann – Based in Duluth, Minnesota, Vikre Distillery creates their liquor with local grains and
some Northwood’s love. Literally translated to upper water, Øvrevann is a light aquavit with strong caraway
and cardamom flavors. Vikre says their “Rich and aromatic, Øvrevann Aquavit is piquant and refreshing to sip
alongside smoked fish or to cut the fat after a heavy holiday meal.” To learn more visit their webpage at
www.vikredistillery.com.
Dill Aquavit – Distilled in New Richmond, Wisconsin at the 45th Parallel Distillery for Gamle Ode based in
Minneapolis, Minnesota. This spirit is Gamle Ode’s (Norwegian for old ode) most popular aquavit because of its
unique refreshing flavor and versatile pairings options. Infused with fresh dill, caraway seed and juniper berry
this aquavit is sure to catch you by pleasant surprise. Learn more at www.gamleode.com.
Aquavit – Private Reserve – Distilled by North Shore Distillery, just north of Chicago, Illinois, this private
reserve aquavit is spicy and savory at all once. With a hint of the oak barrel it ages in, the yellowish spirit has
been described as “Incredibly smooth and seductively aromatic” (SpiritsReview.com) and “Rich, full-bodied and
complex.” (Imbibe Magazine). Read more at www.northshoredistillery.com.
Krogstad Aquavit – Distilled by House Spirits Distillery in Portland, Oregon’s famous Distillery Row,
Krogstad Aquavit is crafted with ethically sourced ingredients. House Spirits Distillery crafts Krogstad so it can
be enjoyed on its own, with ice, or in a cocktail. They even offer recipes for a Norwegian Bloody Mary or a
Scandinavian Evening cocktail. Get the recipes at www.housespirits.com.
Each having their own distinct flavors, these distilleries are building up a Scandinavian tradition for America to
adopt and enjoy.

Women in Norway Have 3rd Best Ranking in World
In 2014, Norway fared well in the rankings for the Global Gender Gap Report as determined by
the World Economic Forum in Geneva, taking third place out of 142 countries. Scoring is based on
five categories: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival
and political empowerment. In the category of educational attainment, Norwegian females were
rated as having total equality at primary, secondary and tertiary education levels. Earned income,
literacy and life expectancy rates were also deemed equal to that of men or better.
Norway’s high ranking is a result of grassroots campaigns, government initiatives and quota systems. In 1978, Eva Kolstad was appointed the world’s first Gender Equality Ombud in Norway,
whose responsibility was to work toward equality between women and men, specifically in regard
to hiring.
Another tactic was to increase the presence of women in positions of power by making it a requirement as of 2006 for all publicly-held companies to have a minimum of 40% women on their
board of directors, or face closure. State-owned firms were already required to have at least 45%
female board representation. Norwegian equality minister at the time, Karita Bekkemellem, said
that "More than half of the people who have a business education today are women. It is wrong for
companies not to use them. They should be represented." She added that she didn’t want to wait
20 or 30 years for society to catch up. Currently state panels, committees and boards have only 38
percent female representation. Norway’s largest company, Statoil, meets the 40% requirement. Six
European countries have followed Norway’s example and the European Union’s parliament plans
to require a 40% quota by 2020.

Sugar Cookie Dessert Pizza
½ cup butter, softened
1 large egg
1 tsp cream of tartar
¼ tsp salt
1 package of cream cheese
2 tsps. Vanilla extract
Assortment of favorite fruits
½ cup sugar
1¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ tsp baking powder
8 oz whipped topping, thawed
¼ cup confectioners' sugar
Tips: Arrange your favorite red and blue berries on top of the pizza to make a festive flag design for Syttende Mai! Pressed for time? Instead of making the cookie crust from scratch, substitute prepackaged sugar cookie dough.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream together butter and ½ cup sugar in a large bowl until
smooth. Add egg and mix. In a separate bowl combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt
and add to creamed mixture until well blended. Press cookie dough into an ungreased pizza pan*.
Bake for roughly 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. While the crust cools, beat cream
cheese, whipped topping and ¼ cup confectioners' sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Spread on
cooled cookie crust. Cut crust into desired serving portions. Add fresh fruit to the top of the
crust, making sure excess liquid is removed from fruit before hand. Chill until ready to serve.
*Double crust to make a 9"x13" dessert pizza.
adapted from allrecipes.com, yields 10-12 servings
