What is Happening This Summer at Desert Fjord?

An ice cream social will be held Sunday, June 16 at the Masonic Lodge, 2531 N.
Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale. This is Father’s Day, so bring someone special along
with you to the ice cream social.
In addition to some social time, the Genealogy Group will discuss how to start the process of locating your
ancestors. This meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m., that Sunday afternoon.
 On July 14th, at 1:00 p.m., there will be a Sunday afternoon get-together at JJ North’s Buffet located at
1312 North Scottsdale Rd. This restaurant is just south of McDowell and Scottsdale Rd. The buffet is less than
$10 per person. You may remember this as the Hometown Buffet. We will reserve a separate room for Desert
Fjord members and their guests.

What is happening August? We are planning an open house for August 11 . There will be more details as we
get closer to this date.
To all of you who helped with the Syttende Mai picnic at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, I want to thank you.
We had almost 100 Nordmanns Forbundet and Sons of Norway members in total. The parade around the park
was great fun. This event always attracts members and prospective members. Planning has already begun for
next year’s event, since 2014 marks the 200 anniversary of Constitution Day. Note the pictures of this year’s
event elsewhere in the Posten.
Ross Berg and Roger Espeland provided background information about Ronald Amundsen Pullman Private
Railroad Car, built in 1928. The car is located in McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. The Amundsen Car on
different occasions reportedly carried Presidents Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower. It was intriguing
touring the railroad car that day.

Membership Matters

The May “Saturday-in-the-Park” meeting, celebrating
Syytende Mai and shared with the Nordmanns Forbundet
members, saw a goodly turnout including several faithful
from the Mesa Lodge. If you missed it, plan ahead for next
year, the 200th anniversary of the founding of the
Constitution of Norway.
While checking for birthdays in June, July, and August
(listed elsewhere) I noticed that of the 44 names listed,
nine are Heritage members (15 years or less) and nine are
members age 80 or older, an interesting balance. Dorothy
Williams tops the elders list, turning 91 in July. Happy
Birthday, Dorothy! She is one of seven members in the
90’s range. Muriel Bakken, 97, reigns supreme, followed
closely by Paul Wold at 95. All three are active members
of our Lodge. We wish them long life!
We welcome into membership to Desert Fjord Lodge
Susan McIver, mother of members Camille, Hayden,
Matthias and Emma. The four children were initially
sponsored in 2006 by their grandmother, Camille Hoenes,
whom some of you may remember. Susan’s membership
now sustains those of the children, continuing their
eligibility for scholarships.
You are reminded that our Membership Retention Fund
(MRF) can assist any member having difficulty in meeting
his/her SofN dues renewal. All requests or referrals are
strictly private and anonymous as are the names of those
who volunteer the funds that support the MRF. I can be
contacted in person during a meeting, by phone

How to Incorporate Your Past Into Your Present

past, instead of letting it slip out of recorded memory and

If you are looking for inspiration and ways to discover
and understand your past, this book is for you. Ms.
Whittington also places emphasis on valuing our own
history and includes many tips/ideas for doing so. Her
writing style according to Amazon reviews is "light,
entertaining and fun.”
The e-book is organized into 4 chapters: Genealogy,
Heirlooms; Home; and Traditions. Each deals with the
past of our ancestors as well as our own present lives. If
you have not explored your family history and do not
consider yourself a genealogist, she has many tips to get
you started. If you have worked on your genealogy
already, there are still many fun and useful tips to be
had....like who would think of having an 'heirloom shower"
for a bride to be!
Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter editor referred
to this book as an idea-book, and noted that it worked
well to read just a few pages at a time, ruminate, then
figure out how to incorporate a few new ideas in one’s
own daily life.

Volunteers are needed to coach people in various
Our lodge delivered 5 pounds of canceled stamps to
the Norwegian Seamen’s Church in San Francisco.
Ed and I were truly impressed with the warm welcome,
the incredible view, and genuine hospitality (including
coffee and waffles) we received when we dropped the
stamps off. Although almost more impressive from
the outside than from the inside, the Norwegian
Seaman's Church is worth a detour, and certainly
worth a stop if you're tired of tackling the Hyde
Street Hill. In addition to a church (where once a
month they have Sunday services in Swedish, the
other Sundays in Norwegian), there is a little kitchen
and nice parlour area where waffles, fish soup and
lutefisk are served, and a gift shoppe selling, among
other things, chocolate bars and handicrafts. There
was a warm greeting to all who enter. Very cool!

We can use more than one volunteer to coach our
members. For example, I could use a person who
collects stamps to coach children who want to work
for a stamp-collecting pin, and it doesn’t have to be
the same person that coaches the adults.
Some skills are better done offsite and organized
at someone’s home or a room at the library or
senior center, and others can be done before or
after our Sunday meetings if time allows. Talk to

Now is the time to collect stamps during the summer
and bring to any of our regular meetings. Just put
your name on the bag or box so your name gets put
into the drawing.
Now is the time to think about what
you are going to read over the summer
and check out some books or work on
some cultural skills.

From One Generation to Another
Daytona Strong (Outside Oslo food blog) reflects on sharing tradition in the kitchen:
Sometimes it’s a grandmother’s wedding ring, other times a great grandfather’s Bible inscribed with handwritten notes about
special dates. When it comes to family relics – those items that carry with them the legends of generations past – the object
is not what matters so much as the intangible representation of those who came before us. In my family, we certainly have
those physical items – a box of my late Grandma Agny’s yet-to-be-sorted jewelry, a sugar and creamer set my greatgrandmother gave Grandma Adeline when she was young, for example – but it is the recipes that I treasure most.

3 cups oatmeal, 1 cup butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg
Melt butter in a saucepan and fry the oatmeal lightly. Stir egg and sugar together. When the oatmeal is cooled,
mix it all together. Drop from teaspoon onto well-greased cookie sheet. Bake in a slow oven.
