President’s Message.
I want to welcome
all of you back after
our break. It sure
went by so fast.
Hope you all had a
wonderful summer!
We had a great pool
party on August 1
at the Stranahan’s
home in Alta Loma. It was perfect
weather, good food and great
company so a good time was had by
all. A BIG “Tusen Takk” to Brian
and Walli Jean for hosting this
event.
I am scheduled for hip surgery in
September so will be missing a few
meetings while recuperating.
Our Nomination Committee,
headed by Pauline Pederson, is
hard at work. If called upon, please
say YES. Since our lodge is small,
we need everyone to step up to the
plate so we will be able to fill the
slate. Election is coming up in
November.
For September and October, we will
have our regular potluck lunch.
There are some important events
happening in October such as
Vinland Lodge’s 20th Anniversary,
Solskinn Lodge’s 25th Anniversary
and the Southern California Kretsstevne. I hope many of you will
attend these special events.
October starts the Holliday Season
with our annual Halloween party so
get your costume ready.
In November we will serve our
annual Thanksgiving dinner with
all the trimmings. This is our fundraiser so please plan to attend.
It is also the last day to turn in your
TubFrim stamps. As usual, we will
car pool to the Seamen Church in
San Pedro to drop off our stamps
and also attend the Church’s
Julebazaar.
December is our Julebord with
Norwegian delicacies and we will
collect unwrapped children’s toys to
donate to Salvation Army.
See you at our September meeting!

History of District Six
Early in 1952, discussions were taking place within
several California Sons of Norway lodges as to the
advisability of “breaking away” from vast District Two
and forming a separate district.
District Two at that time
comprised the Territory of
Alaska, British Columbia,
California, Idaho, Oregon and
Washington.
California’s membership of 3,631 complied with the
requirements set forth for the creation of a new district.
Taking the initiative in this endeavor was Paul Knudsen of
Vallhall Lodge # 25 in San Diego, then President of
District Two and Harald Hansen. Past President of
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson Lodge # 14 in Oakland. With the
secretarial help of Paul’s wife Annabel Knudsen, they
began correspondence with Supreme President E.B.
Hauker and took a survey of the 21 California lodges with
the following results: 19 for such a move, 2 against.
With this affirmative reaction, Paul Knudsen and Harald
Hansen presented to the delegated assembly at the 1952
Supreme Convention a motion to establish a new district.
The motion carried. At this time Harald Hansen was
elected Supreme Director, to represent the proposed
district when it came into being.
An invitation came from Ivar Aasen Lodge # 45 in Santa
Barbara to host the Initial District Meeting that was
accepted with thanks.
On October 18, 1952, 56 delegates from California Sons
of Norway lodges met in Santa Barbara to set up
formation of the new District. Harald Hansen was elected
Temporary Chairman and Inga Grey of Ivar Aasen # 45,
Temporary Secretary. Brother Hansen appointed the
following Credential Committee: George Ansok, Carl
Hansen, Leo Schiager, John Kvammen and Lars Fedt.
Motion was made, seconded and carried “to establish a
new district to be known as District no. Six” comprising
of the States of California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and
New Mexico.
District Six was born!
District Six Convention 2016
Hilsen!
Colorado Sons of Norway Lodges and
District Six Board of Directors look
forward to seeing you in Loveland,
Colorado, and we invite all members to
participate in the 2016 District Meeting
Folk Art Exhibition & Competition!
We are looking forward to an exciting display of entries –
both seasoned participants and first timers!
At the suggestion of our new District 6 Cultural Director
and approval of the District Board, we will initiate the
Danish method of evaluating awards for entries in our
Folk Art “competition” at this convention. We will still
have all categories of our Folk Arts, we will still have
judges, and we will still have ribbons, but not limited to
1 blue, 1 red, and 1 white ribbon for each category. It
won’t be “everyone is a winner” (even though everyone
is a winner that takes on learning these skills!) but
maybe, for example, 2 blue, no red, 2 white in any one
category. We also will not “group” various categories
due to limited entries – each entry will be judged on its
own merit. There will still be “Best in Show” chosen by
the judges, and “People’s Choice” awards. We hope
this encourages continuous and more participation in
this great part of our biannual meetings. Get busy with
those projects! We are looking forward to a record
display of our wonderful Norwegian Folk Arts!
We encourage all District 6
members to participate in this
event – whether or not you
will be a delegate to the
convention. Entries are
accepted as Adult
Professional for those who
teach and/or sell their art for
financial gain. The Adult
Amateur Class is for those who create their art as their
past time/hobby and may share their skill with others,
but not for financial gain. Please bring Youth entries –
ages 16-20, and Heritage – 15 and under! They will
enter in classes of their own. Remember – all entries
must have been completed by the entrant within the last
2 years – District Meeting 2014-District Meeting 2016.
Pre-registration (June 1, 2016) of your item(s) is
essential for set-up and committee planning (limit 2
entries in each category). All entry forms and
instructions will soon be
available in the District 6
website as well as
included in delegate
packets. If you will not be
attending the convention,
arrange with one of your
lodge members who will
be representing your lodge to carry your item(s).
We look forward to a great convention and an amazing
display of the Folk Art of our heritage, created today,
by our members! Enjoy working on your projects(s)!
Tusen Takk for your participation and for sharing your
talent as we “Mine Our Heritage” in 2016.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions. I do not
answer the phone to unknown numbers so please wait
to leave a message and I will call you back.

Affordable Bunad
Most bunads are made by Husfliden or you can make
your own if you are good with needle and tread. Not
everybody can afford to own a bunad, the price depends
on how much hand embroidery and beading that needs to
be done. It can be extremely expensive.
All bunads made by Husfliden are of course Norwegian
made.
There is a bunad maker in Norway named “ Norske
Bunader” who charges ½ the price of Husfliden. Both
places buy their materials from the same supplier so it
has the same quality. What it comes down to is the cost
of labor. Measurements are taken by tailors in Norway.
Bunads from “Norske Bunader” are hand-embroidered
in China and tailors in Poland and Romania assembles
the bunads. All final adjustments to make sure it fits
properly are made in Norway. You can return up to 3
months for adjustments.
At Husfliden, a Hardanger bunad costs about NOK
32,000 which is about $ 5,350 and does not include the
apron, blouse, chest embroidery and belt. It takes
Husfliden about 200 hours to do the Hardanger apron.
“Norske Bunader” sells the complete Hardanger
bunad for NOK 19,800 which is about $ 3,500.
NOK - Norwegian kroner (kr.) it take about six NOK to
one US dollar. Divide NOK by 6 to get US dollars.
The exchange rate might fluctuate a little.
Take a look at www.norskebunader.no for their
selections which includes set prices. Examples…….
Norway’s most beautiful bunad
Just a few days before 17 of May this year,
Norway’s newspaper Verdens Gang (VG)
had 73,000 of its readers vote on which
bunad is the most beautiful. And the
winner was the women’s Nordland bunad.
Of course, everyone vote for their own
bunad and since the Nordland bunad cover
three “fylker” (counties) it is more of them
and that is most likely why it is the winner.
It is estimated that it takes about 150 hours
to sew and embroider the Nordland bunad.
The Øst-Telemark bunad came in second
and third place went to the Hardanger bunad.

Oslo Pigeon lays egg in frying pan.
An Oslo man's unhappiness at discovering that a pigeon
had flown through a window and defecated all over his
kitchen turned to
laughter when he
found an egg laid in
his frying pan.
When Stian Fjelldal
returned to his flat
after a day away, what he found was disgusting: a
pigeon had entered through an open window, leaving
feathers and bird droppings strewn across the
flat. Fjellstad shooed the dove out the window and then
surveyed the devastation afterwards. He then noticed a
nest and egg in a frying pan on the stove. He had to
clean as the kitchen was a total mess. He noticed two
doves on the windowsill looking at the egg and felt a
little guilty.
Would You Consider a Legendary Stay at
a Lighthouse in Norway?
A night at a lighthouse sounds to be a legendary
experience, RIGHT? But it is possible to do all over
Norway. Lighthouses offering accommodations can be
found all along the coast of Norway, from Vardø in the
north to Grimstad in the south.
Until quite recently, lighthouses in Norway were
manned and keepers lived in them. But by the 1990’s,
automation had largely taken over and the living
quarters were abandoned. Today more than 60
historical lighthouses have found new roles offering
accommodation to travelers in search of something
different.
With fresh air and beautiful sea views, a lighthouse is a
unique vacation home. At some lighthouses, you will be
entirely alone on your own personal rock while at other
placed you will become a part of the community. The
small costal village tends to be extremely hospitable
and a night at the lighthouse will most likely involve
late night at the local pub and fishing with a local fisher
man.
92-yr-old ran away from
nursing home with lover
The search for a 92-year-old woman
who vanished from a nursing home in
Norway has been called off after it
turned out that she had taken off with
her Swedish lover. The management
at Vilberg nursing home alerted the
local police when nurses at the home in Eidsvold, north of
Oslo, discovered the 92-year-old’s walker abandoned in
their parking lot. She was later found to have driven to
Stockholm along with her Swedish boyfriend, who at 87.
This is really a touching love story; imagine not being able
to go on a romantic holiday just because you’re past 90.
The lady did nothing illegal, but she caused some
uneasiness because she never announced she was
leaving. The elderly lady has spent the last ten days just
outside Stockholm with her boyfriend, with whom she has
maintained a relationship with since before she entered into
the home. She plans to return to the nursing home on the
weekends.
Norwegians 'have it too good to go abroad'
Norwegians are so comfortably at home that it is almost
impossible to get them to take positions abroad, the head of
Google in Norway has complained. “We are constantly
looking for Norwegian graduates who want to work in
Dublin, London, the US or
Australia. But it is almost
impossible because Norwegians
are the only people we struggle to
get to move to offices abroad.
Norwegians exhibit a “total lack
of adventurousness and ambition”
because they quite simply have it so incredibly good at
home. They are not keen on going overseas and it’s a
perpetual challenge. Even though most Norwegians
recognize that working abroad would look good on their
CVs and help boost their career progression, this does not
seem to be enough to motivate them.
Does Sunday shopping break
Norway’s constitution?
Norway’s most senior bishop has declared that allowing
shops to open on Sundays would violate the country’s
constitution. Based on our Christian and humanistic
heritage, Sunday is a holy day and one of the pillars of our
rhythm of life. As she sees it; it is not in line with
paragraph 2 of the Constitution to change this. The
government has two proposals for legalizing Sunday
trading. To allow any retailer who wants to stay open on
Sundays or will leave the decision up to individual
municipalities.
