The Alumni Legacy At the close of another great academic year I find myself, once again, thinking what a privilege it is to be part of this terrific Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School community! As we finalize plans to celebrate our upcoming 50th Anniversary in 2011 we’re constantly reminded of a history that highlights this wonderful institution as one that has provided a strong academic and character foundation for many of our current leaders in the Bay Area. Leaders like Gordon Wong (’96), who recently spoke to our 2010 graduating class about his long-standing passion for Saint Andrew’s, imploring them to stay connected when they leave and to return here often. Gordon, now a successful architect, recently moved back from NYC to found his own architectural firm that specializes in hillside structures. Leaders like Doug Bullard (’77), who is the Athletic Director here at Saint Andrew’s; Allie Halla (’94), who currently teaches English in our Middle School; and Kristin Poolos (’92), a Harvard trained attorney who has chosen to work here as an Admission Assistant at this juncture in her career. And, leaders like Ryan Cooling (’85), who is the Athletic Director at Presentation High School and was just welcomed to our Board of Trustees this month, as well as Josh Banerje (’95), an attorney in San Francisco who recently became an alumni class agent. Five years ago we had very limited information in our database about our alumni. Today, because of Facebook and because there are now ‘alumni finder’ organizations out there we have reliable information on over 1200 of our 1800 alumni. Finding them and connecting with them has been inspirational and affirming because they truly define what Saint Andrew’s is all about. You’ll read about many of them in this edition of The Oak. We’re proud of their successes and, without exception, they consistently tell us that it was the foundation they received at Saint Andrew’s that prepared them well for their current successes. Very much like child-rearing, which is nearly impossible to ‘assess for effectiveness’ along the way, Saint Andrew’s is really about academic and character preparation for the future. In fact it’s our tagline — Contemporary Academics Traditional Character, and it’s not always easy for parents to measure that effectiveness along the way. Yes, we know that our kids always get into the best private and public high schools, but of more import are the testimonials from our alumni. They confirm that we do what we say we do, and that data matters more than anything else! Looking forward to celebrating the 50th Anniversary with you, Harry V. McKay, Jr., Head of School SPRING SOCIAL Spring Social Guests at the Saint Andrew’s S A V E T H E D A T E Masquerade PAB Spring Social & Auction May 1, 2010 Episcopal School Annual Spring Social and Auction were swept away by the Music of the Night this year to support the school. It seems like our kids just got out of school, yet the new school year begins next month already! Our time at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School seems to be going by just as fast. Our daughter starts Middle School this fall while it feels like just yesterday she was a kindergartner and we were joining the Saint Andrew’s Community. My children have had the opportunity to participate in many wonderful activities here that have made the Saint Andrew’s experience so special for them. At each event I noticed a number of hard working parents making the event happen for all of our kids. I had heard of the Parents’ Association Board (PAB), but really didn’t know how it worked or what they did. That changed later when I was asked to be on the PAB. My first role was Room Parent Coordinator. My responsibility was to find room parents (Head Room Parent, Party Parent, Field Trip Parent and Community Service Parent) for every Lower School class, a Head Room Parent and Treasurer for each Middle School grade and a Community Service Parent for each advisory. Although this took some time, it was a lot of fun. I had the opportunity to talk with almost every family in the school. While some positions were easy to fill and others took a bit more time, I found that parents at Saint Andrew’s want to make their child’s school special. I have met wonderful people every year we have been at Saint Andrew’s. I have found that through my volunteer efforts the school began to feel as much apart of my life as it was my children’s. I am now the President of the PAB. This school year, the PAB will be comprised of 29 individuals who will work very hard (some have already begun this summer) to continue many of the long-standing traditions parents and students have come to expect. Some of these events (but not all) include the Welcome and Room Parent Coffee, All School Parent Meeting, Scholastic Book Fair, Golf Tournament, Harvest Festival, Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, Dad’s Club Spaghetti Dinner, STAR Speaker Series, Variety Show, Field Day and Spring Social. The event that makes all of these activities possible is the Annual PAB Spring Social and Auction. The Spring Social is a fabulous party for the entire Saint Andrew’s Community (current parents, alumni, alumni parents and friends of the school) to come together to celebrate the community and support the school. Proceeds from the Spring Social fund all of the PAB-coordinated activities. Without this necessary funding, many of the activities that have become a tradition for so many years would not be possible. In addition, proceeds from the Spring Social have allowed the PAB to gift items to the school. Some of these gifts include the covering for the students’ al fresco eating area, a new sound system in The Hall/Gym and a new school database. Proceeds from the 2010 Social, allowed the PAB to fund a Middle School science lab, as well as purchase additional components for the Lower School Science Kits and new equipment for the art studio. 2010-2011 Parents’ Association Board Officers President: Laurie Garfield Vice President: Suzanne Rivers Past President: Mary Ann Fox MeMber Cheryl Halloran at Large: secretary: Camille Pietrow treasurer: Ann Marie Cady Fundraising chairPersons: Greta Jackson, Christine Robbins sPeciaL eVents chairPersons: Siana Smith, Sabrina Hoeke goLF tournaMent chair: Rick Bender rooM Parent coordinator: Maria Oberg hosPitaLity chairs: Sharon Bender, Julie Showalter PubLicity: Mary Ann Fox coMMunity serVice rePresentatiVe, Lower schooL: Juliet Vadvilavich coMMunity serVice rePresentatiVe, MiddLe schooL: Lisa Macias P r e -K / K i n d e r g a r t e n Lynn Lampros Arthur (earLy chiLdhood) rePresentatiVe: 1st - 2nd grade rePresentatiVe: Dawn Harms 3rd - 5th grade rePresentatiVe: Melissa Malley 6th - 8th grade rePresentatiVe: Lisa Audy s t ar s P e a K e r s e r i e s / c o M M o n ground rePresentatiVe: Teddi Pinkston weLcoMer: Scott Lantz I am always impressed by the dedication, hard work and unending support of our parents, teachers, staff and Mr. McKay. I’ve been here ever since except for one year abroad at the University College in London where I received my Master’s Degree. I’m married with two children — a son and daughter in elementary school — and I have worked for the same non-profit for the past 18 years. It’s called The Steppingstone Foundation and we develop and run academic programs that prepare underserved students for educational opportunities that lead to college. My mom is still in San Jose and doing great, and my sister Kathryn Donahoe ’81 is married and lives in Aptos, where she is a stayat-home mom with two children, a daughter and a son. She graduated from the University of Oregon after Presentation High School. My brother, Chris Donahoe ’80, went to Notre Dame after Bellarmine College Prep. He has a law degree from USF and a business degree from the University of Michigan. THE OAK | 10 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT George ‘09 and Sarah ‘07 Shoemaker On June 6, 2010, Sarah ’07 and George ’09 Shoemaker participated in the annual Sharkfest swim race from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco’s Aquatic Park. Sound crazy? George and Sarah don’t think so, as the 1.5 mile race in the San Francisco Bay is designed to raise money and awareness for hydrocephalus, a life threatening brain condition with no cure and relatively underdeveloped treatments. George and Sarah competed as part of “Team Hydro.” The team’s founder, Peter Finlayson, created Team Hydro in honor of his sister, Kate, who suffers from hydrocephalus and has undergone more than 100 brain surgeries to treat her condition. Several years ago, Peter and his friends began swimming in Sharkfest. The team now has more than 100 members and is attempting to raise enough money to fund an entire year of hydrocephalus research. Although race day was so foggy the swimmers had to swim an alternate course, George and Sarah did extremely well in the race. Sarah came in first in her age group (16-17) and 15th out of 166 female swimmers. George came in third in his age group (14-15) and 33rd out of 294 male swimmers. Through the generosity of 36 donors, Sarah and George raised $ 1,493. Sarah will be a senior and George will be a sophomore at Saint Francis High School this fall. Sarah is active on the school’s water polo and swim team and is a member of the Environmental Club. George is also a member of the water polo and swim teams and enjoys cycling in his free time. George’s favorite memories of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School are the D.C. 8th grade class trip, hanging out with art teacher Ray Souder, and conquering the 4.2 mile run in PE. Sarah remembers fondly playing the baton game in P.E., the Moving Up Chapels at the end of the year (all of them), and walking down “the path” on nice, sunny days. Sarah ’07 and George ’09 Shoemaker get ready to participate in Sharkfest in June to raise money and awareness of hydrocephalus. __________________________________________________ . . . the 1.5 mile race in the San Francisco Bay is designed to raise money and awareness for hydrocephalus, a life threatening brain condition with no cure and relatively underdeveloped treatments. __________________________________________________ Swimmers of Sharkfest race from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco’s Aquatic Park several years ago.
