October 27 - 29, 2006 proved to be another fun
weekend at the Radisson Resort at the Port in
Cape Canaveral, Florida as groomers, students,
vendors and speakers from all over the United
States and Puerto Rico joined in the fun had by
all.
Friday, October 27th began with a full day seminar facilitated by Ms. Teri DiMarino, NCMG, presenting “Business Basics, a Workshop for
Groomers”. Teri shared her wealth of information and experiences designed exclusively for
the professional pet groomer and salon owner.
Well attended, this class offered a lot to all.
Friday evening featured the Oster Career Start
Competition exclusively offered now at NDGAA’s
two annual trade shows each year. Many 1st
time, new competitors bravely competed towards placement, yet all walked away winners,
taking home plenty of product and equipment
provided by Oster just for participating. First
place went to Josh Hearing of Kissimmee,
Florida.
Saturday started with our rather popular grooming competition commencing with the Terrier
Tournament sponsored by “Show Season”.

With the three division well represented, again the excitement continues as we watch C division, our
beginner division, grow. Our astute team of rather accomplished judges were Ms. Teri DiMarino, NCMG,
Ms. Julie Ostoski, NCMG, our own Ms. Sarah Hawks, NCMG and National Certifier and Ms. Christina
Pawlosky, NCMG. With our Terrier Tournament in division C, 1st place was won by Yvonne Aitken with a
Scottish Terrier, 2nd place went to Tiffany Justice with an Airedale and 3rd place going to Angelina Browning with a Miniature Schnauzer.
Division B winners were 1st place going to Deana Mazurkoweicz with an Irish Terrier , 2nd place was
awarded to Ginger Payson who groomed a Kerry Blue and finally 3rd place going to Tuesday Cook with a
Westie.
In division A, with our rather talented competitors, Cheryl Purcell, NCMG took 1st place with a Kerry Blue,
2nd place was awarded to Lisa Leady on a Sealyham and Jodi Murphy won 3rd place with a Dandie
Dinmont.
The second competition was “TechnoGroom All Other Purebreds” Tournament. In division C, 1st place
went to Yvonne Aitken with a Bichon, 2nd place was awarded to Angelina Browning and Candy Hurst took
3rd place both with Bichons. In division B winning 1st place was Olga Zabelinskaya and Shannon tupes
placing 2nd, both with Bichons and in 3rd place was Tuesday Cook with a Brussels Griffon. In division A
Lindsey Berry, NCMG won 1st place, 2nd went to Karen Tucker, NCMG both with Bichons and Lisa
Leady was awarded 3rd place with a hand strip Brussels Griffon.
Saturday afternoon the “Wag’N Tails” Sporting Tournament took place. Although there
seemed to be a shortage of available sporting dogs in the south to compete with and the
entries were down a bit, the competition was still a fun one. In division C, the winner was
Tina Balance and in division B Deana Mazurkiewicz. In Division A Jodi Murphy took 1st
place with an American Cocker, 2nd place went to Julie Wilkins who groomed an English
Springer Spaniel and Lindsey Berry, NCMG won 3rd place with an English Cocker Spaniel. Nice Work, Ladies!
The Grand Ballroom opened Saturday with a rush, with approximately 60 vendors, it proved
to be a busy shopping day for all. Once again, Glo-Mar Kenic Products provided all attendees with free
water bottles and shopping bags. Thank you Fred and Gloria of Glo-Mar Kenic Products!

We had four van conversion companies, all with model vans just outside the ballroom. What a wonderful
opportunity for groomers to shop and compare what is available in our Mobile Vans of the 21st century.
To say the least, the aisles were packed, and the vendors very busy. We were blessed to have so many
shear companies represented with many wonderful discounts and great buys to be had. Even the lefties
got to try many left handed shears. The weekend also entailed many generous door prize drawings and
giveaways by our generous vendors.
Saturdays classes were not missed by many as the class rooms were all jam packed. Our own Joan
Anderson, NCMG and National Certifier presented “The New Hot Dog, the Portuguese Water Dog” and
Dr. Fleck taught a great class on “Pet Skin Care and the Groomer”. One more time Ms. Sue Zecco, NCMG
and Jay Scruggs presented their standing room only class on “Developing Your Creative Eye”. This class
has become extremely popular as they take actual competition dogs that did not win and with a few subtle
changes show the attendees how to make them winners! Ms. Teri DiMarino, NCMG held her class and
discussed what could become real in our work environments “The Sad Truth; Pet Accidents and Death in

A Grooming “MEGA-STAR”
Oster Career Start
Competition
from the journal of Judy Bremer Taxman
Competitors must provide their own dog, any pure( continued from cover)
bred groomed to breed profile, with minimum of 6 weeks of coat growth.
The reason for the pure breeds is that there is a standard in which the
breed is groomed to so it makes the judging more comprehensible.
Liz Paul passed away exactly 6
months ago to the day of my writing
this. Who was she? Were we personal
friends in the grooming industry?
For this the contestant receives a Golden A5® Two-Speed Clipper $230 value, a size 40 CryotechTM Blade with Agion coating- $30 Value
and a Package of Universal Comb® Attachments - $24 Value. In addition, the following cash prizes will be rewarded:
To me she was a larger than life
groomer/person that I’ve known for
over twenty years. Were we good
friends? “No”! But I thought just maybe,
some of you out there might like some
extra input on who she was to me.
· 1st Place - $200 · 2nd Place - $150 · 3rd Place - $100
Also Oster® Professional Products Ambassadors judge the contest, and after the contest they offer to spend time, free of charge
for hands on training.
I thought Liz was sexy! She was thin
and built and yet “not toothpick” thin!
She had a head of long curly blond
hair which suited her. I would see her
at conventions I attended or was
speaking at, sitting on top of an exhibitor booth table, her legs dangling down while her hands gripped the table top. All the while, she
would be greeting, chatting, joking, smiling and laughing, even smoking! She was a character.
This year’s entries were almost maxed out in Cape Canaveral
Florida. We had students from the entire state of Florida. Judy
Hudson judged and co-judge was Chris Pawlosky. We look for
outline and breed profile first and the time consuming learned skill
of scissoring and finish work second. We had some lovely work to
pick from.
During the contest we had pizza for all who came and a fun drawing
every fifteen minutes during the contest for the
audience’s participation in support of our up
and coming competitors. In my eyes, all were
winners!
One evening at a convention, she sat across from my mom and I at
the hotel bar. We were drinking cokes. She told the bartender, “I
want to buy those two a drink”. I quickly told the bartender to give her
a drink on us. The three of us toasted, raised our glasses high and
giggled and exchanged “thank yous’.
Chris Pawosky, NCMG
National Training Manager (Pet)
Oster Products
Another time I saw her sitting in a hallway sad and crying with mascara running down her cheeks. I asked her if there was anything I
could do and she replied sadly “not a chance”!
So what did I admire about Liz Paul? Her character! She was who
she was, to me. Nothing fake or masked. In our field she was and
will remain an idol for some, an icon for others. A true Mega-Star and
artist.
She was, in our field, the best at what she did. Every connected
groomer in the world knew her name, her accomplishments, her pride
in her work and just how she felt at any given moment. She never
held back. She was true to herself and our industry.
The closest I ever really got to Liz was holding a microphone for her
(before lapel mikes!) As she did a grooming demo on a white miniature poodle at a seminar. She wore a beautiful large brimmed hat
and sexy outfit that day. No grooming smock for her! She looked
spectacular, her eyes sparkled, her hair danced around her shoulders, and her hands and scissors were “like magic”, “like one”. I
took the liberty to mention, while I held “the mike” how great she
looked next to chubby, plain-Jane me. She just kept sculpting and
scissoring, then finally said to me “Cut the Crap” in her english accent. The audience roared at that moment. I did “cut the crap”, she
was right. I was just the MC and mike holder; she, on the other hand,
was “the star”. I respected her for that and, no, I’ll never forget Liz
Paul. She was a “rare breed” quite a character, and a Mega-Star in
the grooming world.

Whether or not to accept cats as clients can be a tough decision. Some
groomers see them as easy money.
Other prefer not to handle them.
Puncture wounds are generally deeper
and close up more quickly than dog
bites. You stand a greater risk of infection due to the various bacteria found
in a cat’s mouth.
Generally, clients are charged 35 to 50% more for felines. Why? The risks involved can outweigh the monetary benefits. They can be more difficult to handle,
they take longer to bath and longer to dry.
Before taking on a cat for a client, there are a few things
to consider:

Can grooming cats be pleasant, enjoyable and
profitable? Yes, Yes and Yes! There are some
really great cats out there. Yes, cat grooming is
a challenge at times but with forethought and
planning it can increase your profits considerably.
Cat Chat will be a
regular feature in future
issues of the Groomers

Are you a calm, laid back person?
Is your shop quiet or chaotic?
Do you have nerves of steel?
Can you handle a scared, nervous animal who’s
reaction may be scratching, biting or flight?
Can the cat escape or get into a dangerous
hiding place?
Do you work alone?
Can you handle a panicked, aggressive cat alone?
If you have help can they handle an aggressive
animal properly?
Can they keep the cat from biting & clawing you?
Or themselves?
Can they keep the cat from hurting itself?
Can they spare the time to help?

Are you allergic to the bacteria in a cats mouth or

All day long, at the Oster booth, Oster Academy offered 15-20 minute demos which included grooming the Bichon and Brussels
Griffon. These bursts of mini demo’s in the
Oster booth just solidifies what we do on a
daily basis in our salons.
The evening brought standing room only in
NDGAA’s Mini-Workshop offered to those just
starting or wanting to know more about our
National Certified Master Groomer program.
Saturday evening
was our popular
Halloween Party
complete with costumes, cash bar,
food, music, dancing and 100 Jeff
Reynolds!!! Scary
but TRUE! It was
hilarious as Jeff’s
wife Mary Ann and
our own John
Stazko teamed together to surprise Jeff. It
was last year that it was suggested that
John dress up like Jeff, instead they had
100 masks of Jeff handed out to everyone.
Delayed in attending his own party, Jeff enters the Lobby/Bar area going to his party
and POOF! there are 100 Jeffs (attendees,
speakers, vendors, and yes, even hotel
staff) all wearing Jeff masks ready to party.
Fun was had by all even those 100 Jeffs!
tion. This tournament always displays absolutely gorgeous, precise work on beautiful
poodles as each contestant methodically
evolves their dog, start to finish.
The final grooming competition of the weekend was the “Kenchi Shear Mixed/Misc. Tournament”. What a fun competition this was
as mixed and purebred dogs are styled other
than their actual breed profile. Originality and
creativity best describes this competition. In
division C, 1st place was won by Ani Carlozzi
with 2nd place going to Yvonne Aitken,
Candy Hurst was awarded 3 place. Deana
Mazurkiewicz won 1st place in division B,
while Terri Tomlinson was given 2nd place
honors.
Finally in division A Lisa Leady won 1st place,
Karen Tucker, NCMG was awarded 2nd
place and Julie Wilkins was honored with a
3rd placement.
Prior to the Best In Show awards, attendees
watched a power point presentation honoring the late Liz Paul, this show was again
dedicated to her memory and her dynamic
impact on our industry.
Best All Around Groomer in division C, sponsored by Groomers Helper was awarded to
Yvonne Aitken while Best Groomed Dog also
The 100 Jeffs

poodles. Division C was won by Kat Dinio

judges presented “Honorable Mentions” in
each division for outstanding work and division C Honorable Mention went to

Between the competition and classes offered
on Sunday most all attendees shopped diligently as those “Free” shopping bags, provided by Glo-mar Kenic Products were filling
up. So many good buys, so many shears to
try, demos to attend, new vendors to visit...
OH MY!! And let’s not forget all those drawings for “FREE” stuff from our vendors and

Question...
Q.
If a new dog comes in that is an awful, dirty, matted mess and who has never been groomed,
is it fair to charge two or three times what the base price should be for that type dog in decent
shape? Debra McNeal, Blakely, GA
OF COURSE! This is a very good reason to charge by the hour. Your base price is the hourly charge and then add on
A.
the dematting time (which is “overtime” at time and a half) and training time too if needed. Customers seem to understand
these terms better than just throwing out an arbitrary price. “Your dog was a mess so we are charging you more!” just doesn’t
work. Explain that you booked for an eight hour day and a dog in this condition is “overtime” on the books. Overtime is well
understood. It’s a win win situation. It’s obvious that the dog is a mess. You are there to fix it and show them how to prevent
it from happening again. But at a price. I feel very strongly that it is our job as professional groomers to help pet owners
understand the basic grooming needs of their pets. That translates into charging appropriately for a neglected one. Take
time to help customers learn the home care needed, i.e. brushing etc. for their pet. It doesn’t help anyone, the dog, the owner
or the groomer to ignore this situation by not charging for your expertise and time. Hopefully, your efforts will have the
customer bringing that pet in more often and in a more manageable condition. Nancy Han, NCMG
“That’s a good question” will be answered
by one of our certifiers each issue. This
issue features Nancy Kallenbach Han,

As a groomer of many years, I took my
classes from Ed Griffith at The Edwardian
School of Dog Grooming 34 years ago, my
hair flew and my mind went off kilter.
Thirty four years ago we talked about licensing groomers. Today we talk about licensing groomers. As in the “old” days and
as it remains today, how can you license
common sense, responsibility or professionalism... Our industry is self regulating as I
have seen over the past many years. I have
seen atrocious grooming... and the client
loved it!! I have seen meticulous grooming
all according to breed standard, and the client hated it. I learned all the basic cuts at
school, only to learn 1000 variations of that
basic cut as a result of what the client thought
was the “way is was supposed to be” or the
“way he/she wanted it”. I listened at many
seminars to groomers who would not put
poodle feet on a Yorkie or Cocker Spaniel
because it was not the standard. They would
turn the dog away. If we do a good job the
clients return and we get repeat business and
referrals. If we aren’t good...they don’t return
and referrals go away. As in every business
and profession, there are those who finish
first and those who finish last. Who’s to
know? I know I can’t please every client, but
I try.
bump, scratch, growth or observation that we
note. If we nick, cut or injure the dog it is so
noted. You must remember that we are working on live animals, not static objects. Most
of our clients understand. If they don’t then
perhaps they need to walk in our shoes.
this profession is truly like. Let me send you
a bag full of “helmets” or “dog skin rugs” or
my workmans comp. claims. To be blunt,
doctors and veterinarians bury their mistakes, while I have to own up to them and
address them.
Nothing is ever noted about the new generation of pets. People want instantly trained,
self groomed and inexpensive upkeep of their
pets. They often do not assume responsibility for the condition of their pets or their behavior. After all, aren’t we the professionals?
I guess I missed the class on wild animal taming at school.
Let me see... 10 years at five to eight dogs
a day times five days a week...times 50
weeks in a year. 24 years of five to eight dogs
times 5 days a week times 4/5 groomers
times 50 weeks in a year... How many dogs
is that? Minimal accidents and two undetermined deaths.
Over the years I have had good and bad
employees. I have had to reduce my volume
on several occasions in order to maintain my
standards. I currently employ eight. We do
not mass produce. My girls get days off and
vacations. We generally work an eight hour
day.
I guess my rambling still amounts to ...
licensing... regulations... why don’t the articles address the whole story. Not just the
“bad groomer”. How about talking about what
An article, generated by the death of a dog
in Stamford, CT, always brings out the “experts”. Again, licensing does not regulate
common sense. The issue of driers!!! The
issue of cage drying. Back in the “old” days
all our driers had heating elements. Today
there is no need to hang a dryer on a crate
or cage with a heat element in it. I have only
three dryers with heat elements in them. They
are stand dryers used by my employees to
finish dry at a table. They are never used on
the cages!
You probably want to know if we have had
any accidents in my shop. The answer is Yes.
Have I taken care of them? The answer is
Yes. I have had two deaths in the shop. One
an 18 year old poodle. Was it old age, stress
or me? No determination was ever made. He
was not found under a dryer. He was waiting
to be dried, resting in a wire crate. The other
was a “wacko” poodle. He was sitting on my
grooming table and developed breathing
problems and died. No determination was
made on this one either. I did voluntarily 32
years ago replace the dog. The owner stated
that compared to her 1st dog the new dog
was 100 percent better. What did that mean?
Our statements to the clients include every,

Just had to get this off my chest, thanks for
listening. I am ever grateful for the many,
many clients, both people, feline and canine
who supported me after all these years. Yes
I am grateful for what the profession has
given me. Its time to retire, wondering if regulations and licensing will help the profession.

Hi everyone, Well it is a new
year ,Christmas rush is over
and it’s time to buckle down
and study for those tests. I
hope that everyone from the
workshops last year plans to
start their journey into the
world of becoming a National
Certified Master Groomer.
Those of you who have
started the NCMG journey I
hope by the end of the year
you will have attained the
NCMG status.
The new study guides will be “Notes From The Grooming Table” by Melissa Verplank, the” 20th edition of the
AKC book” and the breed profiles from National Dog
Groomers Association of America. The new tests will
be ready by our first test site in Biloxi, Mississippi the
first weekend in February.
Please remember to read the certification guidelines
very carefully, it is better to be over prepared rather
than not prepared enough. In the workshops we go
over every aspect of the testing procedures, how to
prepare yourself and your dog, what to expect, what
not to expect. We want you to succeed in your endeavor
to become an NCMG, so plan on attending one of the
workshops.
If you are unsure about whether or not you want to try
to become an NCMG attending a workshop will help
you see if you are ready to take the next step. If
not.....then you have taken a wealth of knowledge back
home with you. Remember the workshops are painless . WE DO ALL THE WORK!!!!

Continued from page 7
Classes represented Sunday were well received by the attendees. Florida’s Julie Ostoski, NCMG
conducted her class “Grooming the Lakeland Terrier” and Ms. Dina Perry shared her expertise and
knowledge with her class “Proper Routing, Scheduling and Maintenance” involving Mobile grooming.
Again with standing room only, Sue Zecco, NCMG and Jay Scruggs presented their class “Developing
Your Creative Eye”.
As our weekend of “Fun In The Sun” ended, Groom Team USA held their rather popular auction with
Mr. Chuck Simons of Groomers Helper being the auctioneer. Always there to assist, he demanded and
obtained great prices for all those donated items the vendors just “gave” to Groom Team. In return,
Groom Team uses all money collected through their raffle and auction to fund their scholarship program and to finance our team traveling to Europe in late winter ‘07 to compete on an international
level, bringing home the bronze, silver and gold again.
Stay tuned and do not forget to mark your calendars for GroomFest, June 1-3, 2007 in Charlotte, NC
and 22nd Fun In The Sun, Oct. 26-28, 2007 at the Cape. See you then.
