Automatic wonders
Walking down the streets of Tokyo in the midst of winter and
your fingers are freezing? What do you do? Well, walk to
the nearest jidouhanbaiki and grab yourself a heated can of
coffee! It’ll keep your fingers comfortably warm as well as a
much needed caffeine boost.
Soft drink jidouhanbaiki is a common sight in Japan.

have a latte to go, please.
What is a jidouhanbaiki you ask? Jidouhanbaiki is the
Japanese word for automatic vending machine. These
ubiquitous machines are found all over Japan. According to
a Japan Vending Machine Association estimate, Japan has
the highest number of jidouhanbaiki per capita in the world,
with one jidouhanbaiki for every 23 person.
Unlike vending machines in other countries, it is rather rare
to find a jidouhanbaiki that is out of order. This is probably
due to the low incidence of petty crime and vandalism in the
country. Many of the jidouhanbaiki will also accept the
¥1 0,000 (about RM300) note, which is the largest currency
denomination and always provides proper change.
Of the 5.4 million jidouhanbaiki scattered all over Japan,
almost half (48.8%) of them sell beverages. The remainder
sells items ranging from cigarettes to noodles to pet beetles
to video games.

only increase.

during cold winter nights.
