Hope to see you there! Some Thoughts on the Sidra TOLDOT BY RABBI EPHRAIM MIRVIS WHY IS “NOACH” NOT “TOLDOT”? As is well known, the title of a Sidra is the first key word in that portion. Often, this is the very first word, while sometimes it can even be up to the 14th word (as for Kedoshim). Today’s Sidra commences with the words Ve’ele Toldot Yitzchak (These are the generations of Isaac). The title Toldot (generations) is well chosen as is it is, indeed, the first key word and it also sets the scene for the rivalry between Jacob and Esau and their subsequent generations. Astonishingly, though, the second Sidra of the Torah starts with similar words: Ve’ele Toldot Noach (These are the generations of Noah). Surely, that Sidra should have been called Toldot as it is the first key word and, thematically, it describes how all future generations in the world would be descended from Noah? I would like to suggest that our Sages saw a significant difference between the outlooks of Noah and Isaac. Noah was primarily interested in himself. Thus, when G-d informed him of the impending Flood, he did not challenge Hashem, as Abraham would later do. Rather, he accepted the fate of his fellow human beings; his own survival was all that mattered to him. As a result, throughout the 120 years of the building of the Ark, Noah did not manage to persuade one single person to change his or her ways. Isaac, on the other hand, lived for others and his primary concern was the continuity of his faith and values through them. While he might have misread his sons’ characters and virtues, his raison d’etre nonetheless was the selection of the next patriarch of the Jewish people and the transmitting of our noble values through to the generations to come. Isaac saw his prime role as preserver of the faith. To him, he and his name were of no significance; he lived for the generations that would follow. Thus, today’s Sidra is aptly called Toldot (generations). While Noah became the father of all subsequent generations on earth, all he was interested in was himself. Consequently, that Sidra is appropriately termed Noach.
