Fleda Brown returns to Beulah on July 11 with her newest collection of
poems, No Need for Sympathy. Brown was poet laureate of Delaware and
now lives in Traverse City, where she writes a monthly poetry review
column and has a commentary on Interlochen Public Radio.
On August 22, D.E. Johnson will bring his Detroit-based historical
mystery series to northern Michigan. A writer who has published four
books in four years, Johnson will read from his latest, Detroit Shuffle.
The 2014 series concludes on September 19 when Teresa Irish speaks on
her memoir entitled A Thousand Letters Home. Actually her father’s story,
Irish’s book is based on 1,000 letters written by her father, Aarol “Bud”
Irish from 1942 through 1945 while serving in World War II.
Programs will take place at the Darcy Library in Beulah on the selected
Fridays at 7 p.m., unless otherwise scheduled at a later date. A
hospitality and book-signing session follow formal presentations, and
programs are free with donations welcome. The library is located at 7238
Commercial Street in downtown Beulah, near the Betsie Valley Trailhead.
For more information, contact Darcy Library at 231-882-4037.

Summer Craft Series 2014
Coiled Fabric Baskets
Tangling for Fun and Relaxation
Wednesday, July 23nd, 1—3 PM
Wednesday, August 13th, 1—3 PM
The 2nd class in our popular
summer craft series will take
place Wednesday, July 23.
We will be fashioning fabric
baskets out of strips of
material and clothesline.
The baskets are both easy and fun to make.
The 3rd class in the craft series will be held on
Wednesday, August 13. Tangling is a simple way of
creating designs from repetitive patterns using pen
& paper. It is easy to learn, portable, fun, and
relaxing. The projects for this class were inspired by
the Zentangle® method of
patterning.
These classes, for ages 10 and up, are offered by the Benzonia Public Library.
Participants will gather on the front porch of the historic Mills Community House
(classes may be moved inside due to poor weather). As with prior workshops, all
materials are provided at no-cost to the participants by the Friends of Benzonia
Public Library. A sign-up sheet is available at the library’s front desk. For more
information, please call the library at 231-882-4111.
Stop in to check out the samples on display at the library.
It’s your chance to do something “crafty” this coming summer!

Construction Update
Wow, we have had a few warm days of Spring weather, and things at
the Mills Community House are moving along! The past couple of
weeks have been challenging in terms of how to get into the parking lot
and building, but those issues should be resolved by the time you read
this. We will have a lovely, new and improved BIG parking lot, with
entrances from both US 31/115 and Walker Road. Landscaping is going in as the summer progresses.
Within the Library Phase I of our renovation is just about complete. There are still a few finishing touches
to be completed hopefully before the book sale on July 11 and 12, but
basically things are back to normal.
We hope you will stop by to visit (admire) our new computer stations, and the
newly rehabbed and shelved Fiction and Non Fiction Room. The Reference
Room has also had some work done, since it is the entrance to the new tower
(emergency use only). We will be ordering a new table and chairs for that
room since it is our primary meeting space.
When those small touches are finished, we are taking a break from the renovation project until late Fall/
early Winter. Decision making will be ongoing, since this next phase will tackle the main hallways and the
Michigan Room—a major part of our Library. It will be messy, and it will make a huge impact when
finished. This whole thing is SO EXCITING! We hope you will feel a sense of ownership, and contribute to
our renovation work. It has been a long time coming, and is sorely needed, as are your contributions.
Please speak to a library staff member if you are interested in making a donation, and soon there will be
some additional information for you.

Working For You
I first came to Benzie County in March 1977 as the County Extension Director
for MSU Extension. I must admit that I immediately fell in love with the area—
the blue skies, the clean white snow, and the people really spoke to me. I
worked and lived here for 5 years, and when I left I knew that I would retire in
Benzie County when the time came. I continued to work for Cooperative
Extension in a number of states until I retired in 2006, moved back to Benzie
County, and settled in to enjoy my retirement.
I always enjoyed the Benzonia Library, so I soon became involved with the Friends, and with volunteering,
sending out the MeL loans for several years. I worked with the Friends and the Library Board to help pass
the millage in 2011 and was appointed to the Board of Trustees by the Benzonia Township Board. I have
served on the Board for the past year and a half, and have been the Treasurer during that time.
In my retirement, I am enjoying traveling, working with my P.E.O. chapter to raise money for scholarships
for women, and in helping local women apply for those scholarships. I have assisted three local women
receive a total of $12,950. I also am proud to make “Comfort Quilts” for the children of Marines who are
deployed outside of the U.S.
I am a strong believer in the Library as an important institution for the community. As a voracious reader
it provides me with hours of enjoyment and is a gateway to knowledge; the library is also a repository of
local history; it is a source of information for students of all ages; and a community gathering place. Good
Libraries, are to me, an essential part of a strong community. I believe the Benzonia Public Library with
its many years of service to the area is an integral part of the community. I am pleased to be a part of the
team guiding it into the future. -Mary Peters, Treasurer, Benzonia Public Library Board
Libraries Vital to the Community
Access to books, media, and quiet, safe reading places top the list of
favorite library services. 80% of Americans say no-cost access to books
and media is the most important service libraries provide, followed by
librarian assistance (76%), and having a quiet and safe place to read (75%).
Programs for youth (69%) were also a high priority.
