mineral water
IFRI has installed Africa's first-ever
aseptic PET line - a Sidel line
equipped with a Combi Predis FMa.
The line at the company’s new plant
in Akbou, in the Kabylie region of
Algeria, now handles production of
the full range of IFRI aseptic
products. Under the ‘Ifruit’ brand, it
currently bottles: fruity drinks; drinks
based on fruit juices and milk; 100%
fruit juices and fruit nectars; as well
as the Azro brand of isotonic
beverages. The Sidel line offers the
ability to cope with the PET bottling
of all these different products.
Raised in an Algerian culture that
stresses love and respect of the
land, Laïd Ibrahim fully understood
the quality and value of the water
flowing from the spring he had dug
to supply his small artisanal
production of lemonade, in 1986. It
was in the Kabylia Mountains above
the Soummam Valley where the
landscape naturally provides the
spring water with its lightness and
purity. Laïd Ibrahim therefore
became a producer of mineral water
of exceptional quality, rich in various
vital minerals. It was another 10
years before the business took off.
Algeria's national, affordable soft
drinks brand
Now with a workforce of 1,030 employees, seven
production lines and two separate sites, Ibrahim &
Fils has become the IFRI Corporation. In the
early 2000s, the company understood that the
growing demand for soft drinks signalled the
potential for stimulating demand in other
beverages such as fruit juices. So, IFRI
introduced ‘Ifruit’, a line of fruity drinks, drinks
based on fruit juices and milk, 100% fruit juices
and fruit nectars with excellent microbiological
qualities and no preservatives. Understandably,
the company decided to opt for aseptic bottling as it gives the consumer the best that fruit has to
offer.

Sidel Combi Predis FMa - cost-effective and eco-friendly
What interested IFRI in switching to aseptic bottling was Sidel's ability to provide support for the new
technology. "The rigorous approach demonstrated by Sidel in technology transfer, particularly via the
on-site training of our staff, assured us of the mastery throughout the production cycle," explained
Aziz Ibrahim, one of founder Laïd Ibrahim's five sons and general manager of the beverage business.
Investment in the line offers IFRI flexibility in the production of its full range of aseptic products,
enabling the company to blow, fill and cap all in PET bottles on the same machine. In terms of
containers, the line can be used to bottle Ifruit products in 0.20, 0.33, 1 and 2 litre formats as well as
isotonic drinks in a 0.5 litre format with sport caps. Predis technology has the benefit of optimising
the whole sterilisation process. Aziz Ibrahim continued: "Predis helps us to protect the environment.
We produce no chemical waste from decontamination, and we use less water, which is becoming an
increasingly rare resource." The by-the-neck transfer and the absence of thermal stress on the
empty bottles, means the Combi solution offers the potential for further bottle lightweighting and
design freedom of bottle shape.
