The Future of LTSI/LFDF Inc. depends on YOU! Please renew your membership so that we can continue to
plan and dance and represent Lithuanian folk dance in our towns, communities, and travels.
At this time, we have received no concrete information as to how “išeivija” we will be a part of the Dainų
Šventė 2014 in Lithuania. We are waiting patiently for official news, so we can determine registration and
plan a workshop for the summer of 2013.
We cannot designate a future folk dance workshop for next summer until we know when prospective
participants can meet:
- In the summertime at Dainava?
- Or possibly a weekend sometime other in the YEAR at another location central to participants?
Teachers of Lithuanian folk dance who work with youngsters are slated to gather in Dainava for
“Lituanistinių Mokytojų Kursai” week in August 4-11, 2013. We might meet on the last weekend of their
week for a "mini workshop" on the other side of the lake... the BEACH side. Because this would be a
weekend that would require some planning and commitment, how does the weekend of August 10-11 sound
to interested dance workshop people?

Dar žvilgsnelis į XIV- tą Šokių šventę
XIV-toji tautinių šokių šventė jau nukeliavo istorijon. Grįžę namo turėjome progos atsipūsti, prisiminti,
apsvarstyti ką patyrėme ir atlikome Bostone. Duomenys teprimena mums dar kartelį apie liepos 1d.
savaitgalyje įvykusią šventę.
Dalyvavo 1774 šokėjų atstovaujant 50 grupėms iš Amerikos, Kanados, pietų Amerikos ir Europos. Žiūrovų
atvyko apytikriai 5.000. Ištisą dieną su puse prieš šventę repetavome lig šiol nematyto ilgio repeticijose
kurios išbandė grupių pasiruošimą; ištesėjome ir parodėme, kad tinkam šokti! Tiksliai nebepasakyčiau kiek
kalbų teko išklausyti ir prieš ir po programos (yra teigiančių, kad „gal per daug”). O meno programa
susidėjo iš 25 šokių, būtent 3 vaikams, 5 paaugliams, 10 studentams, 3 suaugusiems ir 4 pagyvenusiems.
Kitaip sakant, dalyvavome ambicingo masto šventėje.
Nors dauguma šokėjų buvo iš Šiaurės Amerikos, būtinai reikia pasveikinti iš toliau atvykusias grupes kurios
įgyvendino ryžtą įveikti finansiniai sunkią kelionę į Bostoną. Jūs praturtinot mūsų šventę. Lietuviams iš
Brazilijos tariame felicitaçðes, tautiečiams iš Švedijos-lyckönskning, iš Lenkijos atvykusiems broliams ir
sesėms- serdecznie gratuluje wystepu, iš anglijos šokėjams– jolly well done ir iš Lietuvos atkeliavusiems net
penkiems vienetams– bravo! Visi, visi šaunuoliai!
Būtų tiesiog neatleistina nepaminėti nuostabius atsiekimus tų mokytojų vadovaujančių grupėms telkiniuose
kur, deja, dėl įvairių priežaščių, jau seniai nebekalbama lietuviškai – o mes visi gerai suprantame, kad
praplėtus akiratį už pvz., Čikagos ar Toronto, tokios sąlygos tik daugėja. Milžiniško pasiruošimo šventei
sūkuryje, šie veikėjai nepasidavė, net nemokant kalbos bandė suprasti, nagrinėti medžiagą ir tvirtai paruošė
grupes Bostonui. Širdyje jie save skaito tikrais lietuviais ir jiems priklauso mūsų pagarba. Lenkiame galvą!
Be abejo kiekvienas dalyvis mielai papasakos apie savo asmeniškai patirtą įsimintiniausią akimirką iš
šventės. Tačiau visi šokėjai be išimties džiaugėsi ir didžiavosi proga įžygiuoti į aikštę po savo grupės gaire.
Koks nepakartojamas jausmas išgirsti savo grupės vardą per garsiakalbį ir patirti žiūrovų garsius
aplodismentus šventinėj aplinkoje! Nuoširdžiai dėkojame rengėjams už paradą. Tasai šiltas kiekvienos
grupės priėmimas-tos10 sekundžių pasaulio dėmesio centre-daug reiškė kiekvienai grupei.
Parsivežėme neišdildomų išpūdžių iš šventės. Beje, taip kaip kiekvienoje šventėje, tarp gerų akimirkų
įsibrovė ir neįdealių, bet iš jų pasimokysim. Jau grįžome į įprastas vagas, į „normalų” gyvenimą. Laikas
tęsti savo pagrindinę veiklą, t.y., stiprinti savo telkinius, įskiepyti ir puoselėti lietuvybę jaunose kartose bei
daug, daug džiaugtis savo nuostabia kultūra per lietuvišką tautinį šokį.
Šilčiausi linkėjimai ir daug sėkmės ateinančiais metais mums visiems!

One Last Look at XIV Folk Dance Festival
In reflecting on the XIV Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival which is now history, let’s have the numbers tell
the story: 1774 dancers representing 50 groups from seven countries came to Boston for the July 1st festival.
Approximately 5,000 cheering fans and onlookers comprised the enthusiastic audience. A couple of
gargantuan general rehearsals in the two days preceding the event tested our mettle – and we survived! I
can’t say how many speeches were floated in the opening and closing ceremonies, but they, too, were in
abundance (perhaps overabundance, some may say). More to the point: the ambitious program consisted
of 25 challenging dances (3 for children, 5 for teenagers, 10 for young adults, 3 for mature adults, and 4 for
the old-timers). All told, it was an unforgettable experience, including for the seasoned veterans of previous
Lithuanian Folk Dance Festivals.
Although most dancers came from all over North America, kudos have to be given to the groups from “over
the hills and far away” whose focus and spirit motivated them to herculean efforts to ensure their
participation in this quadrennial celebration of Lithuanian dance: felicitaçðes to our Brazilian
companheiros; lyckönskning to the Baltija group from Sweden; jolly well done to our countrymen from
London; serdecznie gratuluje wystepu to our brothers and sisters who joined us from Punsk. To the five
contingents of “twinkle toes” who traveled from Lithuania, we admiringly say, šaunuoliai!
We would be altogether remiss in not recognizing the formidable challenges and achievements of those
teachers and groups who no longer speak Lithuanian. Despite the impediment of the language barrier, these
groups have a never-say-die attitude and have patiently and laboriously sought out creative solutions to help
them learn the material for the festival. True blue Lithuanians whether they speak the language or not, they
take great pride and deserve our respect in representing their communities at the Lithuanian Folk Dance
Festival (šokių šventė). Way to go!
Ask just about any dancer about their favorite moment and you’re bound to hear a personal story, but nearly
everyone has something to say about the parade of dancers that launched the program. What a swell of
emotion to have your group’s name announced to the wildly cheering crowd as your ensemble proudly
marches in! A deep and sincere Ačiū to the organizers who ensured that this 10 seconds of glory and
welcome was made possible across the board to each dance group, no matter its longevity, résumé or size.
No doubt each group will have its favorite moments to recount and remember forever. Granted, as with any
festival, there were, in popular business speak, “plus – delta” moments (i.e., this worked well – this could be
improved). By now the excitement has had a chance to die down as we have all settled into our normal lives
– assuming there is such a thing as “normal” for Lithuanian folk dance teachers. It’s time once again to
immerse ourselves with passion in what we do out of love – since we certainly don’t do it for money: our
assorted dance groups are once again resuming their real work, the nuts and bolts of community building
coupled with celebrating our culture through the joy of Lithuanian folk dance. Warm wishes and best of
luck to us all, as we renew our commitment to dance.

Some of the past officers worked very hard to get all archival materials in one spot. Now it sits.
The rent is high - costs us $ XXX. a year to maintain this room the church at the
PLC. - housed in Lemont, Illinois.
IF we are simply storing the materials - we need to ask ourselves-- to what use? What we collect in
yearly membership fees barely covers the cost of maintaining this space.
Therefore, I am asking for HELP!
We need a team of dedicated people who live in the Chicago area and would be willing to
maintain the archives - distribute the archives - catalogue the archives OR SIMPLY distribute the
materials OUT for USE ... EVEN transfer the information to our website ..... or send the material direct to
the WashingtonDC Lith archives ..... or determine, if in fact, this space is needed for our use or NOT.
In the THREE YEARS that we have had this room - only one inquiry from members has come
forward for a look just to see what materials could be checked out.
IF, in fact, this is not useful for us-- we need to disband this lodging- and do something else.
PLEASE HELP! = please come forward and volunteer to help the LTSI valdyba solve this dilemma.
It is my opinion, that as of NOW - it is of NO USE to us.

It all begins with the membership dues we collect yearly. Without these membership dues the functionality
of LFDI is lessened. So once again it’s that time of the year again for membership dues renewal. Please
make sure to renew your dues for the 2012-2013 year. As this newsletter is being sent out, to date, I have
received renewals from 2 dance groups. Never fear, those of you who haven’t yet renewed your dues, all is
not lost, there is still time. Please send your membership renewal of $20 per teacher in your dance group to
the secretary, by December 21, 2012. Please follow the link to the LFDI website to download the

KUR, KAS, KADA? / NEWS FROM ALL OVER
Washington State/Oregon
Roslyn, WA is a cute little town with a population of 893, known mainly as the
site of the TV show Northern Exposure. But at one time, a hundred years ago,
Roslyn had a large Lithuanian population who lived, worked and died there
and were buried in the cemetery. Thanks to the efforts and work of Vilius
Žalpys of Portland, OR, this cemetery now has a monument recording their
passing, erected in 2009 with a commemoration which drew the descendants of
those pioneers, dancers from Portland’s Aitvaras and Seattle’s Lietutis, and the Lithuanian ambassador to
the U.S. This year, Vilius brought his dancers to perform there at a Coal Miners’ Heritage Festival with
featured Lithuania. Congratulations to Vilius for assuring that those Lithuanians will never be forgotten.
Philadelphia/Baltimore
For 97 years, Lithuanians from Pennsylvania and surrounding areas have
celebrated their heritage in a 2-day festival, Lithuanian Days, held annually
in the Schuykill Mall, in tiny Frackville, PA. Once the site of the largest
Lithuanian population outside of Lithuania, Schuykill County still treasures
its Lithuanian roots with this longest continuous ethnic festival in the U.S.
Lithuanian food, crafts and guest artists are part of the festivities, but the
most significant to us are the dance groups Žilvinas of Philadelphia and
Malūnas of Baltimore who perform there every year. This year they rushed back from Boston to present
their program of XIV Folk Dance Festival dances.
Kansas City
Here’s to the Lithuanian-Americans of Kansas City! Not only have
they maintained a dance group for 30 years, but they also form an
important part of the 33 year old Ethnic Enrichment Festival held
annually in the city’s Swope Park. Dick and Charlotte Žemaitytė
Horvatic, representing the local Lithuanian community, have given
Lithuanians a very positive image by taking lead roles on the
Ethnic Commission and working relentlessly to grow and expand
this event year after year, despite city budget cuts. This year’s
festival saw 60 countries represented, with more than 35,000 visitors over a 3 day period. In addition to
dance and music performances, the entertainment includes a Parade of Flags and a Fashion Show of
National Costumes. Aidas dancers performed on the stage, manned a cultural booth made to represent a
Lithuanian castle, sold delicious food provided by Omaha’s famous Lithuanian bakery, and then worked to
set up and take down the festival’s infrastructure. Congratulations for terrific job!

Lietuvą, bei jos kultūrą Čikagos Mokslo ir Pramonės muziejuje. Programoje dalyvaus solistė Agnė
Giedraitytė. Tai puiki proga aplankyti vieną didžiausių Čikagos muziejų, bei apžiūrėti kalėdinės eglutes iš
viso pasaulio, kurių tarpe puikuosis ir lietuviška. Šių metų naujiena – paminėjus „Knights of Lithuania

Those interested in acquiring a DVD of the XIVth Folk Dance Festival, the organizing committee is still in
negotiations with several companies. A price has not been set for the DVD. There is no doubt that there
will be a DVD. We are hoping that we will have more news about the DVD by Christmas. Be aware that

Lithuania. died, at age 87, in Lithuania.
