City of factories. The city of Łódź has medieval roots, but it has been flourishing since XIX century technical revolution. Small town inhabited by 800 people In 1820, to 40 000 in 1865, and 300 000 in 1900. Łódź became one of the biggest European centres of light industry, thanks to the 4 cultures’s private investments and vast sales market of Russian Empire. City of chimneys… and movies After the second world war, the city’s private industrial empires got nationalized and were operational until the end of the XX century as national companies. Despite poor management and low level of modernization, most of the 900 000 citizens remained almost entirely dependent on light industry thanks to the vast demand of Soviet markets. Source: http://lodz.fotopolska.eu Where were we from? The fallen, rootless city. After the fall of communism in the break of 1980 and 1990s, the national factories lost priveledged position on eastern markets. They had to compete on free market, yet couldn’t win against highly developed and much more efficient and costefficient competition. Most of the 850 000 citizens lost their traditional jobs within fabrics factories. Source: zabytkowo.blox.pl Where were we from? The fallen, rootless city. Source: wykop.pl We are from Łódź! The city with new image After decades of degradation, Łódź started to regain it’s colours. Mainly throught the European Union’s co- funded investments. City which lost it’s industrial roots revitalizes old buildings and starts to create and promote it’s new image. With PHIN’s assistance! Source: www.vi-hotels.com We are from Łódź! The movie city The movie „Ida” produced by Opus Film studio from Łódź, co-financed and aided by the City of Łódź, won an Oscar in the „Best Foregin Language Film” cathegory. You may see the statuette in Łódź Museum of Movie Industry. We helped promoting Łódź Film Commision and the legacy of film in Łódź and we helped Łódź Movie Centre Sp. z o.o. to avoid bankrupcy and losing the last shreads of HollyŁódź legacy by developing the new company strategy. The centre of creative industries Łódź Bajkowa project, the Festival of Creative industries, Łódź Fashion Week, The Academy of Fine Arts, the new visual identity of Łódź. These are just of the few action that Łódź undertook to gain it’s new identity. Our city has ambition to become not only the Polish capital of design and modern art, but also to become the European Capital of Culture! Source: www.cop.lodzkie.pl We are from Łódź! The greenest city in Europe Łódź posesses the biggest forrest area within the city borders in entire Europe. There is a lot of effort to heal the environment damaged by 200 years of excessively poluting industry action. The restoration of natural habitats and parks (in picture: Źródliska park) is an important step towards healing the łódzkie degraded natural environment. Source: e-ogrody.pl We are from Łódź! The energy efficient municipality 700 000 people living in XIX century and communism era buildings is a synonym of bad energy management. We try to thermally modernise as many buildings as possible in order to make them energy efficient! We made energy audits and prepared grant projects for most of the municipal schools in Łódź. We’ve also gained grant for one of the biggest hospitals in Poland (239 697 m3, 11,5 mln PLN). Source: dzienniklodzki.pl We are from Łódź! Łódź – European Capital of Culture There is a lot of effort being put to the cultural development of Łódź. Many events are co-financed be the EU. There are numerous cultural institutions supported by the EU. There is also an unique idea of creating the new centre of this XIX century agglomeration that turned into the one of the biggest Polish cities. We have managed the project of revitalisation of the Grand Theater of Łódź (in the picture picture). Source: lodz.lovetotravel.pl We are from Łódkie! Revitalizing the degraded areas Reconstruction of the ruined cultural heritage makes the local surroundings more appealing to the citizens, attracts the tourists and helps creating workplaces. The antiquities once lost are lost forever. Protecting them is the most important and most underestimated EU support action. We help in revitalization of the Poddębice Park and Palace, which will soon be surrounded by thermes.
