Łódź Design Festival 2013 had as of 22.11.2013. 30,062 Facebook fans CREATE YOUR OWN POSTER REDESIGN YOUR PHOTO An application, in which the user answers simple questions about the Festival programme to generate a personalised poster with Festival graphics. A Facebook application allowing to merge a fan’s photo with Festival graphics: geometrical layout components and/or one of 6 festival stickers with a website address. Q ŁÓDŹ DESIGN FESTIVAL A quiz application, developed in partnership with the Łódź Academy of Fine Arts, that introduces the user into the world of Polish design. In addition to fun, it provides access to a repository of articles to help to improve the user’s knowledge. report / 6 Main Programme It’s all about humanity Theme block: EATING Food I Design I Humanity curators: Sonja Stummerer & Martin Hablesreiter At this exhibition, the curators presented their own interpretations of design processes in the areas of food design, consumption and cultural background of food. Accompanying projects: _world premiere of the book “eat design” _curator guided tours _Food I Design I Humanity conference report / 7 Main Programme It’s all about humanity Theme block: EMPATHY DEEP NEED I empathy and design curators: Magda Kochanowska & Aga Szóstek Items and applications displayed at this exhibition have been created as a result of the designer’s emphatic approach towards users and their needs. They are helpful and improve the quality of everyday life. Exhibition design by: Magda Piwowar, Anna Piwowar Accompanying projects: _curator guided tours _item testing opportunities _workshops report / 8 Main Programme It’s all about humanity Theme block: INHABITATION IN-HABITATION I Garden city, gated city curator: Institute of Architecture Examples from Cracow and Łódź were used to show how Poles live and how they create their own environment by separating themselves from others and changing the nature of home gardens. These two projects are focused on discovering talents: make me! rewards young, talented designers from all over the world for their creative designs; must have is a competition showing the potential of Polish manufacturers and designers working together and the best of implementations in Polish companies. must have For the third time, we presented the most interesting Polish implementations recognised with the “must have” mark. The Council of Experts selected 66 products from more than 300 entries. The awards were handed over at the gala held at the Festival Centre. make me! An exhibition of 20 projects selected out of 300 entries and recognised by an international jury. The winner of the main prize of 20,000 zlotys founded by the Main Patron, Ceramika Paradyż, was the “BEZA Projekt” studio for their angle bars for DIY applications stylised to look like sticking plasters (“Beza Elements – Plasters”). report / 11 Educreation. Where children meet design We invited children to participate in interactive creative workshops or educational walking tours of the exhibitions. We opened an Educational Playingroom equipped with creative toys designed by the best designers. During the 10 days of the event, we had more than 1,000 youngest Festival visitors, of which more than 700 participated in workshops and walking tours. The “Educreation. Where children meet design” project was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Designer Zone This was the second time when we set up the Designer Zone to present innovative tools and solutions for designers and architects. Curators and hosts of the conference: Sonja Stummerer & Martin Hablesreiter Guest speakers: Professor Peter Barham (UK), Marc Bretillot (F), Eugenio Butelli (I), Earlwyn Covington (USA), Katarzyna Gliszczyńska (PL), Beate Koller (A), Joanna Mroczkowska (PL), Peter Raspor (SLO), Professor Vijai K. S. Shukla (DK), Gabriele Sorgo (A) The Adam Mickiewicz Institute was the Partner of the event. BiznesUp! conference The BiznesUp! Conference was a pioneering event focused on the benefits of collaboration between businesses, designers and design management experts such as improved business outcomes or increased competitive advantage. It was a good opportunity to meet top-class experts in design-based strategy development, user experience design or service design. Grupa Paradyż was the Patron of the event. report / 13 Workshops For the participants, the workshops are unique opportunities to develop creative concepts and get hands-on experience in different techniques of creating projects. We invited extraordinary personalities and partners to host the workshops including: Grzegorz Łapanowski, Krosno Glass Heritage Centre, Orange Labs, Academy of Fine Arts (Łódź), RWSL Architekci. Together, we have held 32 workshops with more than 800 participants. Remade market In 2013, it was for the fourth time when selected industrial designers and fashion designers presented their works. For the visitors, it was an opportunity to meet the artists, talk to them and purchase items and clothes at attractive prices. We have invited 38 designers to participate in the event – both the renowned and valued ones and those who are at the early stage of their careers, including: Saffa, Recycled by Lenka, Pociąg do Łodzi, Shop of Form, Mamapiki, Ładne Halo publishing house. report / 14 City Zone Open Workrooms Nights: _OFF Piotrkowska – open door event for artists and creative entrepreneurs _WI-MA – a night in an alternative activity zone _Księży Młyn – a meeting with creative Łódź people in a factory complex. Meetings with designers and organisers including: _PechaKucha on British design _Raptor on a desert – Sotyrys and Aleksander Panopulos, Workshops, such as TUTKI – plaited items made from old newspapers Exhibitions, such as polish Red Dots Parties in Łódź clubs with good music report / 15 Special guests The visitors to the Festival had an opportunity to listen to design experts including designers, producers and curators.
