Łódź
With population of 750,000, Łódź (pronounced ‘woodge’) is
Poland’s third largest city. It is located in the centre of the country,
which makes it a good point to start sightseeing Poland (see
chapter Go & See). Łódź was chartered in 1423, and until the 19th
century it remained a small country town. However, in the times of
industrial revolution it rapidly grew into a great textile industry
centre, earning the name of “Polish Manchester”. The city also
used to be called “The Promised Land”, as many immigrants
from neighbouring countries made their fortunes here. Łódź soon
became a place of coexistance for four cultures: Polish, German,
Jewish and Russian, followed by four religions: Catholic, Lutheran,
Judaic and Orthodox. The urban landscape, spotted by factories
standing just next to industrialists’ residences, and cut by perpendicular street network, became the characteristic feature of Łódź,
making it look different from other Polish cities. After Nazi Germany
seized the city in 1939, the Jewish community was closed in
09
a ghetto and became systematically exterminated in death camps.
When Soviet forces entered Łódź in 1945, the houses were intact,
but the city lost half of its population and the multicultural charm.
Nevertheless, Łódź remained the major textile industry centre of
the country, and developed into the Polish fashion and film centre
with internationally famous Film School and production studios.
After the fall of communist rule in 1989 Łódź lost its main export
market in Soviet Union and the industry fell into decline, resulting
in serious social problems. Today the city looks forward to new
challenges, developing modern branches of economy and building
a completely new city district, competing for the title of Cultural
Capital of Europe in 2016.
Currency & expences
Polish currency is złoty (abbreviated zł or PLN, pronounced like
‘zwoti’). You can find numerous exchange offices in Piotrkowska
street or Manufaktura shopping centre. Student’s monthly living
cost is around 1000 zł. The dormitory costs about 400 zł per
month. If you want to rent a room individually, the cost would be
slightly higher. Exemplary food prices: loaf of bread – 2 zł; litre of
milk – 2 zł; 1 kg of apples – 3 zł; 1 kg of chicken – 15 zł; pizza in
a pizzeria (for two) – 20-30 zł; cup of coffee – 6-12 zł; beer in a
bar (0.5 l) – 5-10 zł; cigarettes – 8-10 zł, a cinema ticket – 10-18 zł,
a monthly gym ticket – 120 zł, swimming pool entrance – 5-15 zł/h.
Kicks & drugs
Drugs are illegal in Poland – being caught by police with any
amount of illicit substance might end up in jail. Alcohol is allowed
for those older than 18. Consumption of alcohol in public places,
except for bars, restaurants etc. is prohibited. Smoking is forbidden in public institutions and public transport (including bus stops);
majority of restaurants have smoking and non-smoking areas,
there are also smoking areas in the Academy. Poland is going to
introduce a ban on smoking in all public areas soon.
Weather
Poland’s weather mixes influences of the oceanic and continental
climate, so you’ll need all types of clothes throughout the year.
In summer it can be torridly hot and dry (over +30°C), while in
winter temperature may fall below -20°C and it can snow heavily.
However, recent winters have been mostly mild (around 0°C) but
cloudy, rainy and windy. Sometimes lack of sun during the short
autumn and winter days can be depressing. But spring and summer are very pleasant, with blooming nature and long, bright
days. But beware! After a hot day, a powerful thunderstorm,
or even a tornado can happen.
Mobile phones
Best option for exchange students is a pre-paid card. You can
buy and recharge your card in most of the shops and via internet.
There are four mobile networks: PLUS simplus.pl, HEYAH (part of
ERA network) heyah.pl, ORANGE orange.pl, PLAY playmobile.pl
Holidays
Except for Christmas and Easter holidays, you can laze around
on the following days:
1 May - Labour Day
3 May - 1791 Constitution Day
June - Corpus Christi, depending on date of the Easter
15 Aug - Assumption of Mary
1 Nov - All Saints’ Day
11 Nov - 1918 Independence Day
In Poland we celebrate the Women’s Day (8 Mar) and the Day
of Education (14 Oct), but they are not official holidays.

Airport
Reymont Airport is a small urban airport located in the southwestern suburbs. It offers a wide range of connections to the UK and
Rep. of Ireland as well as flights to Dortmund and Tel Aviv.
Railway stations
There are two main railway stations in the city: Łódź Fabryczna
and Łódź Kaliska. Fabryczna station usually operates connections
to the east and south (including Warsaw), while it is easier to leave
north- and westbound from Kaliska station. A connection search
engine in English is available at pkp.pl. Usually, the farther you
travel, the less you pay per one km; for example, a no-discount
journey to Warsaw costs around 25-30 zł, while to Cracow (twice
as far) – 40 zł.
Coach station
The main coach station is located just in front of Łódź Fabryczna
railway station. Travelling by coach is often more comfortable and
sometimes faster (excluding Warsaw). It’s better to buy tickets in
advance as coaches tend to be crowded, so if you wait until the
last minute there might be no more free seats.
Reduced Tickets
Students have a 30% discount for railway
and coach networks, and the discount for
local transport is 50%, so always remember to have your student card with you!
Local transport
* buy a ticket in a newsstand near your tram / bus stop
* punch the ticket just after entering the tram / bus
* the date and time will be printed on the ticket
are valid only within the time printed on them - you
* tickets
can change the tram / bus during the given time
* you might be asked to show a valid ticket by a controller
* delays are not rare, so be prepared to show some patience
to offer your seat to elderly people (who would often
* remember
demand it anyway ;)
Where to buy tickets?
In newsstands and kiosks near bus and tram stops. Monthly
tickets are called migawka. You can buy them only in special
points run by the public tranport operator. One of them is close
to the Academy building – next to the tram stop at the large
crossroads.
Night buses
run regularly every 30 minutes, from 10pm to 5am. The lines
connect all the districts with the city centre where you can change
your bus if needed. The transfer stop is located in Kościuszki St.,
between Zielona St. and 6 Sierpnia St. If you don’t have tickets
with you, you can buy one from the driver – it would be valid only
in the bus where you bought it, regardless of the time printed on it.
Tram line 6
This is the line you are likely to use most often as it connects the
Academy with the city center, passing near the Dormitory and going all along Piotrkowska Street.

You can buy a new bike in a bike shop or a hypermarket. To get
a second-hand bike you should either visit the market in Bałucki
Rynek or the car market (every Sunday in Lodowa St.). It’s quite
far away from the Academy – take the tram line 3 from Manufaktura (direction Augustów, 12 stops). You can get a second-hand
bike for about 100 zł.

The number of bicycle paths in Łódź is limited, but constantly
growing. Bike is a good means of transport in the city centre especially along Piotrkowska St. and in Manufaktura. Go along
Piotrkowska St. up to the ‘Biała Fabryka’ or turn into Tymienieckiego St. to get to Księży Młyn – a beautifully preserved industrial complex from the 19th century. Łagiewniki Forest is not far
away from the Academy and the Dormitory. For a a longer ride,
try to reach the Landscape Park north-eastwards from the city.
On the opposite side of Łódź there’s a big park called Zdrowie
(in Polish: ‘health’) with a ZOO, amusement park and botanical
garden.
Check on the internet...
bikley.com and MapMyRide.com are websites that provide
information on bicycle paths all around the world. Simply put ‘Lodz’
in the search engine and pick up the right track for you!

Foreigners may find some of polish meals weird...
kefir or zsiadłe mleko (sour milk) is milk in the first stage of
fermentation. Sounds gross? Why do you eat youghurts, then? ;)
ogórki kiszone (sour cucumbers) - they often go with the main
course as a salad and are a great match for vodka ;)
bigos - dish made of sour cabbage, sausage or meat and
mushrooms, traditionally cooked for at least 3 days
śledzie - salty harrings in oil / garlic / tomato sauce, another
snack to go with vodka ;)
smalec - animal fat with bacon, onion and apple, used as
a bread spread
chrzan (horseradish) - very spicy additive to meats,
the European equivalent of wasabi
Bar at the Academy
located on the 4th Floor, opens from 9am to 7pm. Serves lunches,
snacks, tea, coffee, and cold drinks. There are always two or three
dishes to choose from. You can buy the soup for 3-5 zł and the
main course for 5-10 zł or both things together for a lower price.
Don’t wait until the end of the day as the amount of hot meals
is limited.

Manufaktura
A new commercial, cultural and entertainment complex, redeveloped from a 19th century textile factory. With 27 ha, it’s one of
the biggest of its type in Europe. Around the main square you’ll
find restaurants, bars, cafeterias, shops, a cinema and an excellent
museum of modern art; in the huge shopping mall there are dozens of boutiques and a hypermarket. In winter there’s an ice rink,
and any time of the year there are concerts and various cultural
events. The city’s New Year’s Eve Party is held there. Because of
the proximity to the Dormitory, you’ll visit this place a lot ;) Don’t
forget to check out the art museum (ms2), Cepelia, Wedel’s
chocolate bar, Pierrogarnia, Elektrownia, Stratosfera and many
other places described in this guide. manufaktura.com/en
Galeria Łódzka
Banks & ATMs
You can find several banks in Manufaktura and every Polish bank
has its office in Piotrkowska Street. If you want to open a free
student web-based account, try MultiBank (multibank.com.pl),
Lucas Bank (kontostudent.pl) or BGŻ (bgz.pl). There are a lot
of ATMs along Piotrkowska Street, a few in Manufaktura and Plac
Wolności. The closest one to the Academy is next to the post
office.
Open air markets
The biggest and most famous market lies near the Dormitory and is
called Bałucki Rynek. It’s divided into two parts – the upper part is
roofed, while the lower one still operates open-air. You can buy
everything from food and clothes to animals and vintage stuff there.
A shopping mall located in 15 Piłsudskiego Av., one block away
from Piotrkowska St. The mall organises some cultural events like
fashion shows or bike trips around Łódź during summer weekends.
On the top floor you will find cafeteria Italia with the best icecream desserts in the city.

Żabka shops
27/4 hypermarkets
Generally, hypermarkets are open from 7-8am to 21-22pm, but
there are two Tesco 24/7 hypermarkets. One of them is located
on the corner of Włókniarzy Av. and Pojezierska St.; you can get
there with the bus line 99 or the night line N5 (you can catch the
buses on Zachodnia St. near Manufaktura).
A chain of small shops with frog sign became very succesful in
Łódź. We don’t recommend to do regular shopping there as it’s
quite expensive. However, these shops are usually nearby and you
can always go there if you forget to buy something to eat on time
– Żabka opens from 6am to 11pm.

Artist supplies
We have a little store in the Academy on the ground floor, Pavilion
B. Another shop is across Wojska Polskiego St. Its owner also provides high quality metal plates for printmaking. Near the Dormitory
you’ll also find a toy & paper shop. The biggest choice is available
at 12 Wigury St. (near Galeria Łódzka), and 13 Więckowskiego
St. (next to Teatr Nowy).
Post offices
The closest one to the Academy is located in a tower block
in Sporna St. There is only one post office operating 24/7,
next to Łódź Kaliska station.

City of the 19th Century
Łódź has many beautiful examples of 19th century architecture, so
look up when walking down the streets and you’ll find all elements
Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, Neo-Classicism and Art Nouveau
mixed up in an eclectic manner. According to the 19th century
urban planning schemes, the streets were arranged perpendicularly, so that you can find your way in the center very easily.
Typically for Łódź, factories don’t form an industrial district,
but are dispersed throughout the city and accompanied by the
residences of their owners. Lacking a medieval city core may be
a disadvantage, but it is compensated by Piotrkowska Street (the
longest pedestrian zone in Europe) and the Manufaktura complex.
You will also find many churches, not only Catholic, but Protestant,
Orthodox and Jewish temples as well. In Łódź, there is the biggest
Jewish cemetery in Europe.
Capital of Culture 2016
Łódź is a candidate for the European Capital of Culture 2016 and
has good chances to win the title – the area of Łódź Fabryczna
Station and the post-industrial quarters around it are to be rebuilt
into a new city centre filled up with art; museums, theatres,
cinemas, monuments, art schools, music, film, multi-ethnic
heritage and numerous festivals are strong points of Łódź
lodz2016.pl
City of Four Cultures
Second World War put a brutal end to the 120-year long Polish,
German, Jewish, and Russian coexistence in Łódź. Nowadays, the
Festival of Four Cultures is being held yearly. Exhibitions, plays,
happenings and meetings promote intercultural dialogue.
City of Festivals
Over 30 festivals take place in Łódź every year. You’ll find the best
of them on the following pages.
City of Film
Worldwide famous Łódź Film School (filmschool.lodz.pl)
and Poland’s biggest film studio make Łódź the capital of Polish
cinematography – so-called ‘Hollyłódź’.
City of Arts
Muzeum Sztuki (ms), founded 1931, is one of the oldest museums
of modern art in the world. It possesses a unique collection of
European pre-war avantgarde and works of many internationally
recognised, more recent artists; Łódź avantgarde tradition was the
basis for the creation of Academy of Art in 1945 and many artistic
groups afterwards – it is still one of the factors making the city an
important spot on the artistic map of contemporary Europe.
57
Chosen monuments
Manufaktura - one of the largest 19th century industrial
complexes in Europe, originally a canvas factory, now changed into
a commercial and cultural centre.
Poznański Palace - a grand neo-baroque residence
of Łódź’s biggest industrialist. Situated just next to Manufaktura.
Kościół św. Józefa - 18th century wooden church,
the oldest preserved building of Łódź, moved to the current
location from the Old Town. Ogrodowa St., in a backyard opposite to Manufaktura.
Stary Rynek ‘Old Market’ is a remnant of medieval Łódź,
even though all the houses there are younger than 60 years. This
is where the Jewish ghetto was formed during the World War II.
Located next to Park Staromiejski and Manufaktura.
Plac Wolności ‘Liberty Square’ – with the statue of
Tadeusz Kościuszko, is a good meeting spot; unique for its octagonal shape, the square is where Piotrkowska Street begins. It was
planned as the centre of the ‘New Town’ founded in 1821 for
German weavers coming to Łódź from the neighbouring countries.
Kościuszko was one of the great freedom fighters of the 18th century and national hero of Poland and USA.
Biała Fabryka ‘White Factory‘ - first steam-powered
factory in the city, founded by Ludwig Geyer. Nowadays, it holds
the Central Textile Museum and an open-air museum of Łódź
wooden architecture in the backyard. | 282 Piotrkowska St.
Księży Młyn - well-preserved, complete industrial quar-
ter with a factory, workers’ dwellings, hospital, school, fire station,
owner’s villa, stalls, garden. In recent years the factory has been
redeveloped into exclusive apartaments. The villa holds a museum
presenting the luxurious 19th century interiors. Not far away,
there’s Scheibler Palace with the Cinematography Museum.
Corner of Przędzalniana St. and Tymienieckiego St.
Kindermann Villa Beautiful example of art nouveau
style, holds a municipal art gallery. Worth a visit just for its interiors. 31/33 Wólczańska St.
Jewish Cemetery - the biggest Jewish necropolis in
Europe, deserted after the World War II. Countless historic graves
and unique atmosphere. Entrance from Chryzantem Av., half
a kilometer from the Academy.
Radegast Railway Station - commemoration
place located in a small railway station; during World War II, Jews
from the Łódź ghetto were sent to the death camps from here by the
German Nazis. | Corner of Stalowa St. and Admiralska St., near
the Jewish Cemetery.
Juwenalia
59
annual student holiday in May, lasting for several days. Usually,
the University, the Technical University and the Medical
University organise their juwenalia separately, so that the whole
party cycle can take up to two weeks. During this time you can
participate in parades, concerts and music parties in campuses,
clubs and pubs. People usually dress up and there are no classes.
