FRESH DESIGN - Young Europe about design The Project "Fresh
FRESH DESIGN - Young Europe about design The Project "Fresh Design-Young Europe about design" implemented as part of the International Festival of Good Projects WrocLove Design entailed the activities of eight international groups working on new arrangements of well known places in the city. The aim of their work was to recreate the space to make it more user-friendly. The participants - bound by creativity and passion - strived to establish interaction with residents, exploring problems they meet and trying to find counter-measures to the discussed issues. Their workplaces were easily recognizable thanks to the installations made of recycled boxes standing next to the spots where they worked. The interactive potential of installations was quickly discovered by curious passers-by who rearranged them into totally new constructions. The Project was carried out with the support of the European programme "'Youth in Action". Its aim was to examine how the intercultural dialogue renders into joint activities for the good of society. Most of the artists and design students from Portugal, Italy, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Kingdom and Poland visited Wrocław for the first time in their lives. According to the motto of the Festival-"Design connects", the organizers put a lot of effort to provide the guests with favourable conditions for exchange of thoughts and experience. They also wanted to prove that the cooperation between different nationalities results in ingenious solutions. The workshops were accompanied by evening meetings with volunteers participating in another project - "Active and Creative - Polish People in Europe", a trip to the Four Temples District, a visit in the Museum of Architecture and in the housing complex WUWA as well as other activities aimed at familiarizing the guests with the city and their most interesting parts. The participants of the Project spent 6 days on intensive work, exploring the city and getting to know each other. Evening meetings at the Centennial Hall, on the other hand, allowed them to attend interesting lectures and exhibitions held there as part of the International Festival of Good Projects WrocLove Design. The final meeting at the Centennial Hall summarized the results of the groupwork held in 8 different spots in the city (Salt Square, Grunwald Square, Main Railway Station, Oławska Street, Polish Hill, New Horizons Cinema and CRZ Krzywy Komin). The students had occasion to present and discuss their works. The final projects were evaluated by experts in the field of design and architecture: Prof. Zbigniew Bać, Prof. Zeev Baran, Aleksandra Jaeschke, Guy Perry, Tomasz Sysło, Beata Urbanowicz and Joanna Erbel. The presentations were followed by a common debate "Acrhitecture - Publis Space - Human". Although the participants had spent only limited time exploring the city and its secrets, the results of their work proved their understanding of problematic issues and brought about appropriate solutions. The groups suggested i.e. the transformation of the neglected playground in the Nadodrze district, Salt Square and Grunwaldzki Square. One group presented the idea of transformation of the Polish Hill into a multi-purpose entertainment centre. Another one introduced interactive benches and poster posts in the building of the Main Railway Station. Era New Horizons Cinema, on the other hand, was recreated to meet the needs of the children, while the Świdnicki Passage was equipped with interactive installations. The leitmotif of all the projects was the need to create spot which enhances integration, discussion and social gatherings. The Project has proven that the multiplicity of perspectives, the need to communicate in foreign languages, and the variety of working methods and techniques creates challenges rather than obstacles and leads to new innovative solutions. Each participant could check it in practice how important is dialogue, tolerance and willingness to explore new perspectives. The final projects were finally displayed at the exhibition at CRZ Krzywy Komin which is open for visitors since 18th of May.
