Since 1964, Howard has volunteered as a basketball official in the Hi-Y leagues. He has been volunteering in the current youth leagues since the inception of the league. He has also been helpful in officiating in our wheelchair basketball league. Mr. Hartzell helped with the organization of the current youth flag football league and serves as a coach in the indoor youth soccer league. A participant in the YMCA Community Cup, Howard enjoys playing racquetball at the Y. His most pleasurable moments in volunteering at the Y are when parents approach him after the game and express their appreciation for helping their child improve on their sport skills. Lodge of the population that traditional programming Chairman of the Board does not reach. The goal is to promote new and traditional programs among specific populations in our community who do not regularly engage in physical activity. The Youngstown YMCA, through its Board of Trustees, officially participates in “Activate America” and is developing, marketing and conducting programs designed to: A. Provide senior citizens opportunities for personal enrichment and fitness enhancement; B. Promote healthy lifestyles to families with young children; and C. Create an environment to relieve stress and encourage exercise among middle-aged men and women. The Youngstown Y, comprised of Davis, Central and Fitch branches, will always continue its traditional programs. “Activate America” will introduce the Youngstown Y to segments of the community who do not recognize the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. During 2006, the Youngstown YMCA has served, through its three branches, more members and program participants than at any time in its history. Sometimes we reflect back upon the “glory days” of our past. At the Youngstown YMCA, the “glory days” are today. We plan to continue the growth of the Y’s mission in 2007 and to Activate Youngstown in the process. — Thomas J. Lodge Chairman of the Board ▼ In conjunction with Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield, 1,186 seniors were enrolled in the Silver Sneakers Program and participated in Wellness programs at the “Y”. ▼ Thanks to a $100,000 challenge gift from Home Savings & Loan Charitable Foundation, a $400,000 water filtration plant has been constructed at Camp Fitch. ▼ New software designed to streamline our business and financial procedures and a new payroll and program software to better serve our staff and members was implemented. ▼ 3,000 youth learned to swim and 4,000 attended our Day Camp and Preschool programs. ® ▼ Special thanks to Al Leonhart for his monthly newsletter articles “Historical Moments at the YMCA.” ▼ Mitchell Lodge at Camp is being built in memory and to honor Attorney James Mitchell, YMCA past board president and long-time member and supporter of the YMCA. ▼ Over 1 million members, program members, campers, and guests hand-keyed in during 2006 averaging about 3,000 different people per day that used our “Y” facilities. ▼ The Y’s International program continues to grow with hosted campers from six countries and staff from ten countries. ▼ $421,673 in capital improvements, repairs and new equipment was invested in our facilities. The Young Men’s Christian Association Mission Statement: The YMCA of Youngstown Ohio is a not-for-profit, charitable organization dedicated to building healthy spirit, mind and body. The YMCA puts Christian principles into practi As part of a worldwide association, the YMCA of Youngstown, serves men, women and children of all ages, incomes, abilities, races and religions. ® page 4 A note from our Chief Executive Officer… Fulfilling Our Mission Dear YMCA Members: The Youngstown Young Men’s Christian Association reaches out to families, youth, adults, seniors and people with special needs with proKenneth L. Rudge grams that develop values and encourage moral Chief Executive Officer and ethical behavior based on Christian beliefs. Our programs are the conduit of our mission. Character development is truly our product. The YMCA strongly believes that challenging individuals – especially at an early age – to accept and demonstrate a positive set of core values is much more effective than attempting to treat or cure social problems once they arise. The YMCA fosters an environment where diversity is celebrated and where all can reach their fullest potential and pool their talents to reach beyond their individual limits to create a stronger community for all of us. The Youngstown YMCA is a place where people of all ages and walks of life come to receive physical, social and spiritual support and where critical lessons in self-esteem, respect, sportsmanship, teamwork and community service are learned. Our core values of Honesty, Respect, Caring, Responsibility and Faith help us lay the foundation for positive living. We’re excited to announce that in 2006 we reached two wonderful milestones. We now serve over 25,000 annual members through our YMCA. We also serve another 50,000 folks on a less permanent basis through such programs as youth sports, swimming lessons, fitness classes and camping. Thank you for your support and prayers as we enter another exciting year. — Kenneth L. Rudge Chief Executive Officer “My prayer for all of them is that they will be of one heart and mind, just as You and I are, Father that just as You are in Me and I am in You, so they will be in Us and the world will believe You sent Me.” ▼ A place to belong: The YMCA works to build “small communities” among people to connect them with one another. ▼ People who care: The YMCA is run by caring volunteers and staff making everyone feel welcome. Grown-ups practice trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring and fairness. Kids find heroes at the YMCA. ▼ Choice of Programs that build skills: The YMCA helps to ensure that everyone finds something to succeed in and benefit from, so they can grow in spirit, mind and body. ▼ Fun: The YMCA understands that fun helps people stay motivated and involved, keeps their hearts and minds youthful, and helps them live life to the fullest. ▼ Faith: The YMCA builds a moral and ethical foundation for life, with God’s love and His commandments as our cornerstone. Financial Assistance Central Branch $345,000 Camp Fitch Branch $141,000 Davis Family Branch $32,000 ® ▼ Service to others: The Youngstown YMCA ensures that each child and family, regardless of their circumstances or ability to pay, can be part of the YMCA. Thousands of volunteers give their time and skills as basketball coaches mentoring ten kids a season, or as board members leading the YMCA or a fundraiser, or as many of our other volunteers who inspire young people to strive for more. The YMCA knows that even small gestures can change lives. ▼ Through support from the United Way ($156,390), our annual Partner of Youth Campaign, Send-a-kid-to-Camp Campaign, donations from local foundations, businesses and federal grants: $482,896 was donated to give everyone the opportunity to belong to the YMCA. Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way John 17:21 page 5 ® “God has given everyone a conscience to tell right from wrong.” Romans 2: 14-15 ® Youth & Adult Sports YMCA sports seek to bring out the best in every participant. The ideals are high for both youth and adult teams and leagues. The Y’s approach is that everybody plays regardless of ability. The Y’s sports leagues teach cooperation and teamwork, help meet the physical and social needs of kids, develop skills, build self-esteem, strengthen families and promote healthy life styles. ® page 6 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:37 Family Environment ® The YMCA is proud to be a family organization which provides a safe and wholesome environment. Programs encourage adults and children to set aside time to spend absorbed in projects together. Regular time slots are set aside expressly for families to swim, work out and play together. page 7 ® “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 ® Good Health & Fitness Prevention is the key word for physical education and health. Our programs are organized around the principle that there is a “oneness” of body, mind and spirit. They are aimed to help produce a long and productive life and having fun with it. The Y’s way of life requires education in good nutrition, proper exercise, avoidance of drug and alcohol abuse, and dealing with stress. ® page 8 “All the earth shall worship You and sing praises to You.” Psalm 66:4 Youth & Adults with Disabilities ® The YMCA provides special populations with the opportunities for personal enrichment, fitness enhancement, recreation and camping. A barrier-free environment and classes adapted to special needs enables this population to improve self-worth and, most importantly, maintain their independence. page 9 ® “Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things.” Psalm 98:1 ® Seniors The YMCA operates programs that improve the physical, social, and mental health of seniors who need a place to go, a place they know they are always welcome. Special programs and volunteer opportunities are designed to help older adults maintain their best physical condition which then helps them maintain independence, address chronic disease and health care crises. ® page 10 “Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us.” Psalm 90:17 Camping ® Since 1914, Camp Fitch has been true to its mission and has expanded from just boys to girls, to adults, to families and for people with special needs. Campers at Camp Fitch and in our Day Camp program grow in leadership, personal skills, self-confidence, self-reliance, appreciation of others, independence, decision making as they gain in their knowledge of the outdoors. page 11 ® “Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Galations 6:7 Heritage Club – Endowment Fund Dec. 31, 2006 - $4,268,717 $50,000 gift from the estates of Judge Sidney and Attorney Bert Rigelhaupt The YMCA invites you to join our Heritage Club, a special group of people who believe in the mission and purpose of the Y.
