What a winter! With Sylvania Schools being closed today, we will not be rescheduling our Records Day. The first day of the second semester will be Monday, January 27. I am excited to get the second half of the year started! Exams have been completed and the teachers are busy grading. Grades will be entered by next Wednesday and report cards will be distributed soon afterwards. Remember you can now access your students grades on PowerSchool and do not need to wait until the grade cards are given out. The start of the 2nd Quarter is also the time when OGT intervention starts. Letters will be sent out to Sophomores who had low scores on the OGT practice test that they took last year, requesting them to participate in our after school extra help program. If you receive this letter, I encourage your student to participate. For each hour a student spends in this program, an average of a 1.7 percent jump in their score is achieved. RULES CORNER: Absences Absence Parents need to contact the Attendance Office at 419-824-8731 before 8:30 a.m. to verify why students will be absent or tardy for the day. Stephen, a Northview graduate, and his wife Cheryl have been active parents at Central, Timberstone and Southview as well as on a District level. They have three children, two Southview graduates attending their parent’s alma mater - Northwestern University and one is a freshman at Southview. The scope and far-reaching implications of Board member responsibilities include: establishing a vision for the education program; designing a structure to achieve that vision; assuring that the schools are accountable to the community; and advocating continuous improvement in student learning. They accomplish this feat through an endless string of meetings and school functions; reams of reports, agendas, proposals and other information to read and study; and a host of difficult decisions to make. Thank you to Board members: Vicki Donovan Lyle, Julie Hoffman, Jim Nusbaum, Dave Spiess and Stephen Rothschild. A special thank you to John Crandall for his 4 ½ years of service on the Board and good luck on his new position as a Sylvania Township Trustee. Winter Weather is Here Winter weather brings the chance of school delays and closings. When inclement weather is an issue, there are two decision points. The first decision comes about 5:45 a.m. when the Superintendent decides to remain open, delay two hours, or to close. At times, the call may come later than 5:45 a.m. if the weather situation is still developing and additional time is needed to assess conditions. If needed, the second point comes by 7:45 a.m. when a final decision to remain open or close is made. Ohio school districts are granted up to five calamity days. If districts go over that allotment, they are required to make up the days. Weather delays and closings are relayed to parents and staff via all of the local TV and radio stations, the District Twitter feeds, Facebook page and website at www.sylvaniaschools.or, by calling the closing/delay info line at 419-824-8696, and/or through electronic updates at www.cancellations.co. Kindergarten Parent Information Parent meetings will be held at each school during January/February to answer questions and schedule registration. Individual school sessions will begin at 7:00 pm on the following dates: January 28 Central Trail Elementary January 29 Maplewood Elementary January 30 Sylvan Elementary February 3 Whiteford Elementary February 4 Stranahan Elementary February 5 Hill View Elementary February 6 Highland Elementary For parents unable to attend their school-site meeting, contact Student Services at 419-824-8581 to get a registration packet and set up an appointment.
