Join us for the Homecoming football game vs. Maumee tonight. Bring your raingear and see who will be crowned Southview’s Queen. Good luck to Lauren Andrews, Charley Kale, Brianna Webb Kamelesky, Macenzi Pawlowski and Michaela Strube! Saturday night is the Homecoming Dance from 8-11pm. The Homecoming Dance is being expanded to include food and games. Our hope is to have more students attend and enjoy the evening. Tickets for the night were on sale all week and can be bought at the door. Prices are $20 for a single and $40 for a couple. All students will have to have a parent signature on a school dance form. Have you ever wondered where the rainbow ends? #Southview @mmb2472 @hessjodi34@southviewcougar In two short weeks, it will be the end of the 1st quarter. How time flies. It is time for students and parents to check PowerSchool to ensure all grades are in order and there will be no end of quarter surprises. The Learning Center (TLC) is available for any student who needs extra help in their academics. It is available each period of the school day. See your counselor for more information. Congratulations to the 2016 Homecoming Court: Freshman—Sophia Rees; Sophomore—Leticia Ruma; Juniors—Sydnie Davis and Madelyn Duling (tie); and Seniors—Lauren Andrews, Charley Kale, Macenzi Pawlowski, Michaela Strube, and Brianna Webb Kamelesky. Juniors who take this test can qualify for National Merit Recognition and Scholarships. Sophomores can take this test for practice. This test will be given at Southview on Wednesday, October 19, periods 1-5. To register, bring a $15 check or money order made out to “Southview High School” to the Guidance Office. Deadline to register is October 11. If attending Homecoming, don’t forget to ”check in” at the dance and earn more points! Page 2 COUGAR OF THE WEEK—BELLE CONGER Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Rachel Schoch, has nominated Isabel (Belle) Conger for Cougar of the Week. Mrs. Schoch shares, “Belle is a critical thinker that excels in the classroom. Belle tends to think outside the box, so her ideas add a new dimension to classroom discussions. She is also kind and courteous to both classmates and teachers. Belle represents the best of Southview High School.” Belle is the daughter of Rachel and Doug Conger. In her spare time she enjoys writing (horror), sing (she has participated in musicals at Southview and in the community). If she could meet anyone in the world it would be Stephen King because he is very interesting and he has written books very well. Congratulations Belle! Thank you to the Envirothon Team members, Jessie Richie, Hannah Halsey, Sydnie Davis and Nicholas Puterbaugh, who attended Thursday’s Sylvania Rotary meeting and heard Mayor Craig Stough who talked about the different options for supplying water to Sylvania residents. Please join us at the next Parent Club meeting on Wednesday, October 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the main office conference room. Page 3 From the Office of Teaching & Learning — Mrs. Libby McIlwain Testing Information: The new testing format has been decided upon by the Ohio Department of Education. Ohio’s State Tests (OSTs formerly known as the AIR tests for the past two years) will be given twice this year. The first testing window is December 5th -9th. This testing time will be for students who need to make up a test, who did not score well previously on a test, or for students who may have to take many tests and can take some of the tests prior to the spring testing window. The school will let students and parents know who should be testing during this December time frame. In addition, spring testing will take place at the end of March, with the tentative dates being March 27 - 31. More information will be released in the future regarding spring testing dates, times, and procedures. Students in the classes of 2018 and beyond (current juniors, sophomores and freshmen) need to take the OSTs as graduation requirements. The “end of course tests” the students must take are: ELA 1 (9th grade English), ELA II (10th grade English), Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, American History, and American Government. Since they are “end of course tests” the students take them the year they are enrolled in that specific class. Typically sophomores will be the heaviest testing year, with a traditional 10th grader taking ELA II, Biology, Geometry, and American History. This does not differ much from the days of the OGT when students took 5 tests starting their sophomore year. Graduation requirements/points: Students earn graduation points when taking the OSTs. Students must earn 18 points to be eligible for graduation, with the following being required: Math - minimum of 4 points English - minimum of 4 points Science & Social Studies - 6 points across both subjects If your student is a current sophomore or junior, you can see the number of graduation points earned by looking at the Ohio State Test results report that was mailed to your home on August 3rd. If you have any questions about testing or graduation requirements, please do not hesitate to call or send an email to your student’s counselor or Libby McIlwain, Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning. We are here to help guide you and your students through this process. Asthma can effect many and Fall is a time of year when many complications can occur. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Always carry your inhaler with you and use a spacer to help distribute your medicine more effectively. Let your friends know that you have Asthma so they can be aware and look out for symptoms that need managed quickly. If have a history of an attack during exercise, take your rescue inhaler beforehand to keep your airways open. If you have Asthma and have not contacted your school nurse, stop in to discuss your Asthma so an action plan can be created. STUDENTS STAYING AFTER SCHOOL All students need to leave the building by 2:45pm. For safety reasons, students who need to stay later than 2:45p.m. need to be supervised by a coach, a teacher, or a club advisor, etc. Page 5 Week of October 3 Seniors may sign up to attend informational meetings with reps from the following colleges next week: Monday October 3– Central Michigan Tuesday October 4 – College of Wooster, Grand Valley State, University of Dayton Wednesday October 5 – Baldwin Wallace, Vanderbilt Thursday October 6 – Ohio Northern, Kent State Friday October 7 – Capital University, Albion College Students should see Mrs. Yoshino for a college representative visit pass at least one day prior to the scheduled meeting time. This is three months earlier than previous years. Senior students that intend to pursue post-secondary education can submit their FAFSA using 2015 tax information for the 2017-2018 Academic Year. Page 6 Sr Composite Photos @ Southview Oct. 13 and 14 Guidance Office Conference Room John Crisman has once again agreed to bring all of his equipment here to Southview to make getting your son or daughter’s composite photo taken convenient for you. We have scheduled two consecutive days: Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14. Students just need to stop by the Guidance Office Conference room during one of their lunch hours for a professionally retouched formal composite photo. Students should come dressed up and ready to go. It is important to note here, that John does this as a favor to the Sylvania Community. He is not making a tremendous profit on these pictures, as he is charging a nominal price for them. At the shoot, he will show the student the photos he has taken and the student will proof them on the spot. We will put that photo in the yearbook. We will not send you the proofs. What you take is what you get. I note this only because we had a few parents treat this as a full priced shoot and wanted tocome in and formally choose photos and John does not get reimbursed for the extra time involved. In fact, he is hardly reimbursed for the two days he gives up for us and he allows us to use his lighting equipment for senior superlatives at this time as well. Any questions, please email me at [email protected] The price is as follows and should be paid at the time of the shoot: $25 for a formal composite suitable for the yearbook or $45 for a formal composite suitable for the yearbook and an 8x10, two 5x7’s, and 8 wallets of that photo Thank you, Elizabeth Rauscher Meridian Advisor Page 7 Last weekend the 2nd Annual 48 Hour Play Festival was held at Springfield High School. Students were given a genre, prop and line to incorporate and had 48 hours to write, rehearse and perform the show. Congratulations to the team of Brie Dona, Mariam Fneiche, Sunita Dhar, Jordan Topoleski, and Nathan Davenport on winning Best Overall. This is the second year Southview has won best in show! Page 8 Southview Grad and local Artist, John Bucher, was chosen to paint a mural in downtown Sylvania. John’s design concept was chosen from 15 submissions, said Jennifer Archer, executive director of the Sylvania Community Arts Commission, who asked artists earlier this year to submit designs that spoke to community. It will be painted on a 92-foot long and 20-foot high wall at 5658 N. Main St., an office building owned by John Wallace. “Instead of depicting different members of the community through realistic depictions such as clear distinctions of skin color, expression of race and culture, etc., I decided to create individuality of each depicted image, but altogether, each shares an element with other images and serves to complete and benefit the whole,” Bucher wrote in his design intent. Dave White Chevrolet has donated the $2,000 prize for the winning artist design. Archer said this is the second mural project in downtown Sylvania’s Red Bird Arts District. The first was Roots of Sylvania, a mural behind 6622 Maplewood Ave. The painting by artist Dani Fuller includes elements of the city’s history. “Murals can start conversations among people, good and bad … It makes anything you look at more dynamic and engaging,” Archer said. “I think communities are moving toward them because it does make [the community] more engaging, but it also draws people out to see what is changing their community.” http://www.toledoblade.com/Art/2016/09/22/Sylvania-bringing-mural-to-Main-Street-Design-takes-anabstract-approach.print Page 9 Southview with parents, students, and Rotary members.
