GREEK LIFE
Getting involved in sorority or fraternity life
Joining a fraternity or sorority can enrich your life by fostering a common bond with students who have
similar values. UCSD is home to 20 fraternities and 18 sororities, including 15 culturally based Greek
letter organizations! Greek Life provides a unique opportunity to be a part of a 150-year-old tradition.
At a large institution, Greek members view their fraternity or sorority as a home away from home.
Fraternal organizations cultivate brotherhood and sisterhood in addition to providing opportunities for
leadership and service. Greeks can be found all over campus in other clubs and activities such as
Orientation Leaders, Resident Advisors, and College Councils.

TRADITION
TRITON JUNKYARD DERBY
Inspired by a popular
TV show, UC San Diego’s
Engineering community started the
Junkyard Derby in 2004. Engineering students
scour the local community for discarded materials,
contributing to a makeshift junkyard. Student teams then
rush to grab the best “junk” with which to engineer their speed
machines. The teams race down Peterson Hill in the middle of UC San
Diego’s campus with crowds of onlookers cheering them on and casting their
votes for “most creative” vehicle.

TRITON 5K
Since it was established
in 1996, the Triton 5K Run/

than $2.5 million, benefiting more than 850
students with scholarship support.
The event was founded by former UC San Diego Chancellor
Robert C. Dynes to rally the campus in support of undergraduate
students. Each year the event includes more than 1,500 participants and
volunteers: students, faculty, staff, alumni, corporate sponsors and community friends.
