I always felt too old and that my experiences differed from the other students. Now I feel like I have a place where I truly fit. I spend more time on campus, stop by the Center to say hello and see what everyone is doing. I feel at home at the Center, and with those who frequent it.” - Student Veteran I GOT INVOLVED! “It’s a place we can voice our opinions as Veterans, and receive services and assistance specific to our needs. It’s also a great place to relax, study, work, and connect with other veterans and veteran affiliates.” - Jerald Macachor, USN Veteran The Student Veterans Resource Center at UC San Diego is located on Level 2 of the Student Center. • Connect with a community of student, faculty, and staff veterans. • Access information about campus resources (academic success, health services, disability services, career services, colleges, and student life). • Learn about GI Bill benefits and financial aid. • Get involved with veterans groups and other student organizations across the campus. • Participate in community service opportunities. • Attend workshops and seminars. 14 TRADITION TRITON JUNKYARD DERBY Inspired by a popular TV show, UC San Diego’s Engineering community started the Junkyard Derby in 2004. Engineering students scour the local community for discarded materials, contributing to a makeshift junkyard. Student teams then rush to grab the best “junk” with which to engineer their speed machines. The teams race down Peterson Hill in the middle of UC San Diego’s campus with crowds of onlookers cheering them on and casting their votes for “most creative” vehicle. Find Out How! Come to the Get Involved! Info Sessions Tuesday, September 23rd 1pm-2:30pm Price Center BiomedWired has recently launched a non-profit student organization at UC San Diego. The vision of the organization is to connect top tier students in the biomedical field to companies who demand highly-qualified applicants. By reaching out to the next generation of students at UC San Diego, the organization hopes to solve the inherent problem that exists in the biomedical world in regard to a disconnect that exists between students and employers. By providing various opportunities to obtain hands-on experience and make professional connections, students in the biomedical profession will find it easier to initially excel in their professional careers. Furthermore, this organization will create a niche where the students can find the resources they need in order to consolidate their job search and network easier. Additionally, there are hopes to use these tools to facilitate a strong network between students and biomedical professionals both in the greater San Diego region and internationally. Visit us on Facebook and check out our website www.biomedwired.com to keep updated with upcoming events. Also, join us for our Biomedical GBM during the 1st week of fall quarter! BiomedWired is the FIRST ONLINE BIOMEDICAL PORTAL of its kind to create a professional environment exclusively for those participating in biomedical endeavors. ”How could I not jump at the chance to work at Biomed Wired? It is a one of a kind opportunity to meet and establish relationships within the biomedical community. I’m more confident than ever that I will succeed.” Ted Alejandre BiomedWired, Networking Manager 34 WELCOME WEEK AND BEYOND!
