SVDA CLINIC WITH HOKAN THORN
Over the weekend of Oct 14/15 – SVDA hosted this long awaited clinic at beautiful Wellington Farm with
Hokan Thorn. By utilizing our yearly educational grant from VADA – we were able to discount everyone’s
lesson by $30 to a very low $50 per lesson. What a terrific deal for SVDA members! The clinic was almost
full – we had only 1 slot open on Sat. afternoon. So watch for more notices of these great opportunities that
SVDA is offering for your educational purposes.

Here’s some great feedback;
The clinic was quite a success...from my point of view! Yogi and I had a great time. This was our
first load and go all by ourselves. It was nice to have help greet us in the driveway at Wellington and
direct us to parking and help with getting ready. I didn't have lots of extra time either day and Nancy
(don't know her last name!) was wonderful on Saturday...we discovered that we had both been to an
Erik Herberman clinic! Kathy G. was equally helpful on Sunday so it was a great experience before
we even got in the indoor for instruction. Hokan was most helpful and correct in his approach...much
to Yogi's sighs! We both got a complete workout and thought the clinic was absolutely fantastic.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed my lesson with Hokan Thorn today!!! I had a great ride and he
really reinforced what I've been working on with Allie. This lesson was definitely well worth the $$$$
:-D I hope that he would do another clinic sometime soon, I'd definitely sign up to go again!

The farm was absolutely gorgeous...beautiful barn, beautiful horses; great footing in the indoor and
outdoor rings. There is a permanent judges box set up at "C" in the outdoor dressage ring which is
lined with RR ties. The spectator area (at A) in the indoor was wonderful...set up higher than the ring
with plenty of seats; mirrors (at C end) of the indoor with great ventilation on both sides. The inside
wall of the indoor was made of that new decking material and were installed at an outward slant so as
to not interfere with the riders foot. There was a heated office and restroom in the barn. Everyone was
great, there was coffee, muffins, cookies and drinks; plus sandwiches for lunch. Hokan rode each
horse to familiarize himself with their way of going at the start of each lesson. You could see a big
improvement in the horses movement at the end of each lesson. He was very helpful. We had a great
day!

Dressage Clinic

Olympic Medalist Dorothy Morkis

Dottie Morkis put the USA on the global dressage map with her success at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. She was
the anchor of the U.S. team and the very last rider to go in the team competition. Her score resulted in first dressage
medal for the USA in decades. She remained the highest scoring American in Olympic Dressage competition until
the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Bringing home the Bronze medal in Montreal gained worldwide recognition
and opportunity for US riders for years to come.

2007 USEF DRESSAGE TEST GUIDELINES
The United States Equestrian Federation, Inc.® Dressage Tests for Training
through Fourth Levels are now available. These new editions become
effective with the beginning of the 2007 USEF competition year
(December 1, 2006) and will remain in use for the next four (4) years (until
November 30, 2010).

As a continuing service to USEF members, movements for these dressage tests are
now posted on the dressage page of the Federation website www.usef.org. Also
available is the new edition of the popular USEF Dressage Test Booklet. This
convenient pocket-size booklet, which contains all movements, directives, and test
information for Training through Fourth Level, can be ordered from USEF for a cover
price of only $5 each (plus shipping). For the first time, this booklet also includes the
USDF Intro and Freestyle Tests, thereby being a complete national dressage test
reference. Order forms are available on www.usef.org.

SVDA GROUP LESSON CLINIC SERIES FOR 2007
As unbelievable as it may seem, winter is fast approaching and SVDA is planning its Group Lesson Clinic
Series for the winter of 2006/2007.
If you haven’t participated – it works like this – we have a local FEI trainer conduct Group lessons of 2-5
participants – you can see from the schedule that the groups will vary. They are usually an hour in length, unless
the groups are very small – we might run 45 minutes.
This gives you the opportunity to get out and travel to another farm, get instruction from an FEI level
trainer, work with other horses in the ring (like a warmup ring at a show) Cost is only $15 – another DEAL for
SVDA members!
So mark your calendars and please plan to come – we have had great feedback on this series the last 2 years.

Trying to set this up with Sandy Johnson - looking for the location. Sandy is a USDF
Bronze & Silver Medalist and is currently a candidate in the “L”certification program. She will conduct small
groups of 2 or 3 in a regulation size outdoor dressage arena.
January 21 Danielle Rowland at Terra Ceia Farm in Suffolk VA. Danielle is a former NARYC Team Member,
a USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold Medalist and has been accepted to the Hilltop Farm Young Horse Trainers
Symposium. Terra Ceia has a large outdoor arena and Danielle can accommodate groups of up to 5.
February 4
Kathy Rowse at Silverleaf Farm in Suffolk VA. Kathy is a USEF “S” Judge and a USDF Bronze,
Silver & Gold Medalist. She will conduct 45 min lessons in groups of 2, no more than 3, throughout the day to
stagger parking. There is an outside regulation dressage ring and covered small dressage arena in case of bad
weather.
March 4 or 11 Tristin Hardy at Happy Valley Equestrian Center in Suffolk VA – Tristin holds her USDF “L”
certificate and is a USDF Bronze & Silver Medalist. She will concentrate on utilizing music in her lessons to help
horses find their rhythm and tempo. Happy Valley has an indoor small dressage arena so bad weather is not a
problem.

PLEASE VOTE!!!
Once again its time to cast your vote for the
VADA SHEL GAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD for EXCELLENCE in
SPORTSMANSHIP. Please take a minute or two to read through the following
nominations and vote for the one you feel best exemplifies the qualities of good
sportsmanship and dedication to the advancement of the sport of Dressage.
Each Chapter is to determine how they will collect the votes of their members. The
Chapter representatives will then report their Chapter vote tallies to the Shel Award
Coordinator. Vote tallies must be reported by December 15th, and the results will be
announced at the VADA Awards Banquet in January 2007. The recipient of the Shel
Award will be presented with a commemorative plaque and a check for $250.00.
THE NOMINEES ARE:
Peggy Minnich, VADAF
I would like to nominate Peggy Minnich for the Shel Gafford Memorial Sportsmanship Award for 2006. Peggy
exemplifies dedication as a rider, trainer, coach, judge, club president and mentor. She is an achiever and her years of
training her horse Fearless Legend from training level through I1 show her dedication and love of the sport. With
Fearless retired, she has partnered with a four year old Dutch Warmblood mare, Vinca, and continues active
involvement in the show ring. Her sportsmanship is evident as a competitor, trainer and coach. She willingly shares
her years of experience as a rider in and out of the show ring with her students and fellow club members.
Peggy has served as president of VADAF for three years. Through her encouragement and enthusiasm, membership and interest has grown. Under Peggy’s direction, the club has sponsored a recognized show the past three years and
volunteer involvement has expanded. Her leadership and knowledge of our beloved sport is a wonderful example of
willingness to give ones time and talents.

Abby Zezeski, SVDA
I’d like to nominate Abby Zezeski for the Shel Gafford sportsmanship award. Abby is a 16 yr. old dressage rider with
the SVDA. She enjoys showing with her horse, TOT, and win or lose, is able to always point out the positive in herself
and in her horse. I’ve never seen her upset by her instructor’s criticism, nor the judges’. Prior to each riding lesson she
takes, she pores over her previous score sheets to apply the judge’s feedback to her teacher’s instruction. Being a public high
school teacher myself, this is a quality not seen often enough.
Abby often attends schooling shows with friends she’s made through her interest in riding. She never hesitates to offer
helpful pointers and assistance even though she’s aiding those whom she’ll be competing against!
When Abby attended the Jr. National competition in Leesburg this summer, I watched her help her fellow riders with their ta
braiding, and grooming, even though she was ready to call it a long, hot day. Such unselfishness is hard to find among
our teens of today.
These are but a few of the excellent sportsmanship qualities I’ve seen Abby display in the past, and I’m sure, will continue to
display in the future.

SVDA Year End Awards Program
The 2006 SVDA award year will be from 12/01/05 to 11/30/06.
Presentation of awards will be at the annual SVDA Awards Banquet.
A.
Eligibility Requirements for SVDA Awards

The rider and owner must be a member of SVDA in good standing at the time of ride.
An SVDA member who is leasing a horse is considered the owner for the purpose of showing and awards. The actual owner of the horse does not have to be a member
of SVDA for the horse to be shown or to qualify for awards.
Riders must volunteer at least 8 hours of service to SVDA during the award year. The first 4 hours of service must be completed by July 1.
Copies of Recognized Show test scores must be submitted to the Awards Chairperson, Carol Gonyo, by December 9, 2006 to be eligible for Recognized Show awards.
The copy is the front of the completed test, which must include the name of the competition, date, judge, judge’s signature, score, etc. If the judge’s signature is not on
the front, the rider must also copy the back to include the signature.
It is the position of the Board of Directors of SVDA that specialty show scores (i.e. from Quarter Horse, Morgan, and Arab shows) are not considered for tabulation for
the SVDA year end awards. However, SVDA members participating in open dressage classes at a show advertised in the regional USDF Omnibus who have questions
about acceptance of their scores may submit information to the Board of Directors for clarification. Consideration of score eligibility will be based on the show’s prize
list, the list of classes, the Omnibus ad, and the USDF and USEF show numbers.
The SVDA will maintain test scores for SVDA Schooling Show awards only.

SVDA Schooling Show Awards

Schooling Show scores will be considered from the top six (6) SVDA Schooling Show tests for a horse/rider pair in a level. To qualify for champion or reserve
champion, at least two (2) of the six rides must be from the highest test of that level. The scores will be averaged to determine the award winners from each level. (2/03)
All riders who submit two (2) scores from the highest test of the level will place above non-qualifiers. The remaining places will be filled by non-qualifiers.
Consequently, a non-qualifier with a higher average score may place below a qualifier.
In case of a tie, the horse/rider combination with the highest score from the highest test of the level will receive the award. Duplication awards will be given if the tie
cannot be broken.
First to sixth place ribbons will be awarded to Senior riders for each level: Introductory, First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Combined FEI Levels.
First to sixth place ribbons will be awarded to Junior riders for each level if there is sufficient competition. There may or may not be a level separation.
The Pewter Award will be given for the highest single score in VADA/SVDA Schooling Show at Training Level or higher (cannot include Introductory Level scores).

submitted accompanies test scores submitted for consideration.
This is a rider only award, not a horse/rider combination award.
Each metal is a one-time award. It is presented to each rider only once.

Achievement Awards
