Observations and Reflections from VADA Fall Show and Regional Championships by Paige Nuckols 1. Our breeding programs designed to produce quality dressage horses are working. The number of athletic and talented young horses filling the training level and first level classes is impressive. These horses are the ones I call “super-horses”, as in “superheroes.” The moment they set foot in the warm up area, they ooze suppleness, swing and forwardness that average horses have to warm-up to get to---these guys just have it. It’s easy to envision them moving up the levels. When you look up their pedigree in the program, they quite often read like the who’s who of Dressage stallions in both this country and Europe. They are lovely and inspiring. I could watch them for hours. 2. Correct and accurate riding is rewarded more often than not. These “Super-horses” are intimidating, no doubt, but the judges are being fair. Certainly every judge has his or her preferences, but generally speaking, I think that they are judging each horse as an individual. If you go in and ride an accurate and steady test, and your horse’s general way of going is correct, you will get competitive scores. 3. Well-ridden dressage will help a horse stay sound in their later years. There are always debates about whether dressage is truly “good” for horses or whether the years of repetitive movement only serve to ruin their joints. I had the opportunity to watch the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday night. It was truly impressive how many of the horses were in their late teens and still performing happily. In my mind this reaffirms that correctly done dressage can allow horses to stay sound and happy throughout their lives. 4. While they are rare, magical partnerships between horse and rider can exist at the upper levels. Often when I watch upper level work, while I am amazed by the intricacy of the work and the power, I’m also a bit saddened by the sense of anxiousness and tension that I see in the horses. I’m often left wondering if I’d ever want to do that with one of my horses, to push them to that place where there is such a fine line between brilliance and tension. I realize that a certain degree of positive tension is what makes brilliance, but so often things get out of balance, with the horse’s energy and power converting to anxious behavior rather than harmony and expression. The final ride of Saturday night, Felicitas Von Neumann-Cosel and Tonico Do Top, was a perfect reminder of the harmony that can exist between a horse and rider doing the highest level work. Tonico appeared to be dancing to the music of his own accord throughout the test. The timing and flow of the movements and the music were excellent. It was the kind of ride that brought a smile to everyone’s face. The combination of a quiet, elegant rider, using only a snaffle and a horse relaxed, yet confident in his work produced a lovely image of what dressage can and should be. As the two left the arena it was announced that this was their final performance in the competition ring. I am very grateful that I was able to see this inspiring partnership one last time. I will remember this ride whenever I start to question if upper level dressage can be done without overcooking our horses. 5. Watching the warm-up area can be very educational. I was reminded no matter what level you are riding, the foundation of the training pyramid must still be solid. So every ride, every warm-up, must first begin with rhythm and relaxation, before one can go on to more complex things. During your ride, if these things are lost, you must step back and re-establish them. Watching the really good riders and trainers in the warm up (the one’s whose horses look happy and correct in their work) this is what you see—always a release and a return to the basics if things start to boil over. 6. All of the volunteers that help with this show make such a huge difference in the overall atmosphere of the show. From the warm-up area steward, who quietly reminds us of how many rides away we are, to the ring steward who wishes us luck before we go in and says nice things about our horses and is patient about bit checking after our ride, these are the people that make the whole show such a pleasant experience. Everyone has good rides and bad rides, horses are, after all, horses, but having such a nice group of people around makes the show ring a much friendlier place. We riders don’t say it often enough, but we really do appreciate everything that the volunteers do to make the shows enjoyable. 7. My final observation might be the most important one. It is definitely 10 degrees colder and the wind is much stronger on top of the hill. I was very glad that I hadn’t clipped my eight o’clock pony and that I had a white turtleneck to wear under my show coat. Always pack more warm clothes than you think you’ll ever need and think twice about clipping for the Fall Show! “How I Used My VADACC Scholarship” by Evan Coldiron This has been quite a transition year for Nils and I. I have moved to the 16-25 Grand Prix test for my gold medal scores and it has been extremely challenging. Early in the year Nils had tooth surgery and then was off regular training for a while as Snowmaggedon 2015 hit (as were we all). In late August I had to have extensive surgery on my badly deviated septum and an adenoidectomy. The recovery period was longer than expected, but I can finally breath through my nose! We have worked hard to get Nils into the shape needed to do piaffe, passage, and good, solid full pirouettes. As you all know, these are the most difficult and physically strenuous moves a horse can execute. I am fortunate to be able to ride a horse that has the possibility of executing them. We had a decent first showing at The Meadow, but soon after it became too hot for him with his anhidrosis to travel much. We had a good and not so good day at GAIG’s in October and feel as if we need specialized help with piaffe particularly. I am pleased to say I will be using my scholarship money to have specific training with Bruno Greber at his farm. I am very grateful to VADACC for giving me this opportunity to get the specialized help I need for this remaining and important hurdle for Nils and I to ‘Go for Gold’. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Example: Licensed show, spring and fall schooling shows, fix-a-tests, clinics, other chapter activities. Sanctioned: A stable or group has applied and received approval from VADACC. Generally, there is a fee to allow these schooling show's scores to count toward VADACC Year End Awards. Active Member: Member who has paid their membership dues in full for the current year. New Member: Person that has not been a VADACC member for the entire past membership year. Rules: Volunteer hours are credited to active members only. The volunteer is responsible for reporting their hours earned to the volunteer coordinator. Hours are earned at VADACC hosted events; this does not include sanctioned events. Hours must be earned directly by the member, there is no “gifting or transferring” of hours. th Membership year begins December 1st and ends November 30 of the following year. Volunteer Hour Opportunities: One hour for each article submitted to the Collective Marks newsletter. One hour for preparing food to be sold at a VADACC-hosted event. Actual hours spent for each VADACC Committee meeting. Actual hours carrying out duties of a VADACC committee. Actual hours for each VADACC board or general membership meeting attended. Actual hours spent working at a VADACC-hosted event. Actual hours spent with VADACC JR/YR program at meetings. Actual hours spent teaching a VADACC clinic. The Championship Experience By Christine Brandel If you didn’t attend or show in the inaugural VADA-CC Schooling Show Championships held at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds in October, you missed out on a great show experience. Modeled after the championships that VADA-NOVA has done, and managed and run by Beth Atkinson and Susan Ellis, this show was the epitome of what I believe a good schooling championship should be – fun, welcoming, supportive of riders and horses, and educational. It was a perfect way to end the competitive season without a ton of pressure or expense. My daughter, Wren, who is 9, and I qualified for the show at the VADA-CC Fall Schooling show held at Saddlebrook Stables in September. As a junior rider still getting her feet wet in the competitive arena, this was essentially a great “starter big show” for my daughter, while being a fun culmination of my own show year for myself and my mount. On the day of the Championships, we arrived to the showgrounds to find fall themed decorations at the show office and in and around the competition ring. There was a lovely “photo area” set up with the VADA-CC banner, and the warm-up and competition rings were large with good footing. There was plenty of food available for purchase as well, from yummy baked goods to chips, smoked hot dogs and sausage, and barbecue. All proceeds from the concessions benefitted the VADA-CC Junior/Young Rider Team, so it was great food for a great cause. The ribbons, prizes, and trophies were beautiful and enticing, and competitors received gift bags full of treats at check-in, too. I had a particularly good show day, but aside from that, I felt that the comments and feedback I received on my rides from judge Kim Schmidt were helpful, constructive, and supportive. Spectators were also supportive, and I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the atmosphere. My daughter had a few struggles in her show day, but the show staff and judge were committed to helping her learn in a positive and supportive way. It was an important experience while learning all those good things involvement with horses teaches our young (and older!) people – sportsmanship, perseverance, courage, and determination. In her last test, the crowd cheered her on, and the smile on her face showed her sense of accomplishment. The sight of all the junior riders, trotting around the warmup ring while waiting to have their pictures taken, ribbons flapping in the breeze, was inspiring. Honestly, that is what all of this is about. This show was a terrific venue for the membership to get out and have a great time, end their competitive year on a high note, support each other, and be together as an organization. Particularly for those who do not participate in shows at the licensed and recognized level, this series is a way to have that ‘fancy-show’ experience on a smaller level. I know plans for next year are already in the works, and I definitely plan to make it part of my show season next year. Many thanks to our marvelous volunteers without whom the show definitely “could not go on”. Alison and I have finally paid all the bills and collected all of the sponsorship fees. This year we made about $2000.00. Each year we have offered lovely prizes and had strong sponsorships. We have received many compliments from exhibitors, judges and vendors. Many people comment on the friendly atmosphere at our show. Next year’s show is set for May 7 & 8, 2016. Our judges will be Gail Hoff-Carmona from California and Joan Darnell from Texas. Our Technical Delegate will be Michelle King from Virginia. We will start meeting in January 2016 to begin planning. This will be the last year that I will be managing Dressage at the Meadow. If you are interested in taking over this position, I would enjoy talking with you. There is terrific support through the Board and the volunteers. I would be happy to train someone this year and it would be the perfect opportunity to follow me through the process this year. Scores must be from the current competition year (December 1st through November 30th of the respective year). Awards will be divided into Junior (17 or under as of 2014) and Seniors, licensed and schooling shows as appropriate. A minimum of four (4) volunteer hours per rider with VADACC in current competition year are required. Entries must be submitted with copies of: 1. USDF printout or copies of the tests with your scores and judges signature. If judge’s signature is not on USDF Test, it is your responsibility to contact that show manager to have that score verified. 2. Rider Awards Form must be completely filled out* to be considered. Any questions please contact Awards Committee. 3. Volunteer hours will be verified by the volunteer coordinator, a minimum of four (4) volunteer hours per rider with VADACC are required. Any questions please contact Volunteer Coordinator. *Incomplete entries will not be accepted. VADACC is not responsible for contacting members to correct or complete information submitted.
