Landfall Foundation May 2006 Board of Directors Barry Burkholder, President Carol Cunningham, Vice President Stan Nawrocki, Treasurer Ned Olds, Secretary Martha Bachman Bill Bryden Mimi Cunningham Shirley Heusel Judith L. Larson Anne Leister Nancy Millen Stan Roman A Message from the President By Barry Burkholder The best yet! That is how many of our patrons described the Landfall Foundation’s presentation of Commedia Dell’ Arte. Their comments focused on this year’s formula, that included cocktails under the tent followed by a strolling dinner and topped off with professional entertainers and a successful live auction. Everyone enjoyed having more space to move about and the opportunity to greet new faces to Landfall. The creative atmosphere for this year’s Gala was the inspiration of Janet Burkholder, who chaired the event, and her very able co-chairs Shirley Heusel and Carol Cunningham. More than 60 individuals comprised the Gala committee, which were in turn led by various committee chairs. Sandy Murphy again arranged the outstanding dinner offerings working with Kevin O’Connell, Charles Rousey, the Country Club of Landfall (CCL) staff and the participating Bob Rothermel Harry Williams Vance Young Contributors Bill Bryden, Data Management Beverly Roman, Newsletter Editor Barry Burkholder and Michael Rosander, No Sleeves Magic Mask signed by Jack Nicklaus chefs. The dynamic duo of Gus and Martha Bachman secured our live auction items and “whirlwind” Nancy Carrier orchestrated the silent auction. Chris Farley handled invitations with Bob Gera providing the attractive artwork for the cover of the invitation. Maggie Earley won the drawing contest with her artwork that graced the program. Avery Wilmeth was responsible for publicity and communications. Shirley Heusel had a dual role in chairing decorations and coordinating the beautiful autographed masks. Unique this year was that each room of CCL was decorated by a separate committee and the CCL staff members wore costumes especially created by yet another group of volunteers. Bill Bryden handled reservations and Stan Nawrocki acted as Treasurer. More than 350 Landfall Foundation Sponsors and Guests enjoyed it all at Landfall Foundation’s tenth anniversary gala. The fun began in the cocktail tent on the front lawn of the Landfall Clubhouse. Magic tricks and acrobats entertained guests as they savored cocktails, complimentary wine and delicious hors d’oeuvres. When guests entered the clubhouse, they were Janet Burkholder and Toni Dew (in mask) overwhelmed by the artistry of Landfall and guest chefs. Fabulous food: Asian, Italian, Southern European! We had it all —and all of it was presented beautifully! (Please note the chef’s names and restaurants on page five so you can thank them in person for their support when you visit their establishments.) People buzzed with excitement as they strolled from room to room, filling their plates and recommending their favorites to friends. People relaxed at elegant little tables in the dining rooms or basked in the setting sun at tables on the veranda and lawn. For many, the fun of not being “tied” to one table added to the night’s excitement. From all the comments, the “strolling dinner” was a tremendous success. (Continued on page 8.) President’s Message (Continued from page 1.) Pat White and Janet Burkholder encouraged sponsor contributions. Thank you to everyone who worked on the Gala and produced this spectacular evening. Landfall truly is a repository of caring and talented individuals who passionately give back to their community. Now, to the business side of the event. We began the evening with the largest sponsor base in the foundation’s history. Contributions of $107,000 set the stage for our fund raising efforts and celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the foundation in grand style. I would like to personally thank each sponsor for his or her part in making a difference in the Greater Wilmington area through the foundation. Our auctions produced $53,000 due to our attendee’s aggressive bidding, as well as the quality of items received from our very generous 2 Frances Weller and Dean and Shirley Heusel donors. I encourage you to honor the donor businesses with your presence. Finally, ticket sales net of expenses, amounted to $20,000 for a grand total of $180,000 for the evening, an increase from $143,000 in 2005. Professors Paul Costagno and Craig Steenerson of UNCW, along with Bruce Gibson of Landfall, scripted, directed and produced the evening’s stage show. In closing, I thank all 2005 contributors to the Landfall Foundation listed on pages six through eight. We have now provided more than $700,000 in grants to worthwhile charitable agencies in the Wilmington area with more to come in 2006 as we approach the $1 million dollar mark. Thank you Landfall! Beverly D. Roman 4 Grants Report By Loretta Meyers and Welton Curtis Sewell, Co-Chairs The Landfall Foundation Board of Directors set $5,000 as the maximum amount to be awarded as grants this year. Continuing last year’s policy, there is no restriction on agencies having received grants for three consecutive years. All 2005 grant recipients are required to file project reports by Tuesday, June 13, 2006 and applications must be postmarked by Tuesday, June 20, 2006. A 2006 application form is available at www.landfallfoundation.org or from the Grants Committee. Mail forms to 1924 Pembroke Jones Dr., Wilmington, NC 28405. We are seeking projects in arts, education, and health and welfare that meet the needs of nonprofit agencies and organizations in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties. The foundation does not support political, religious or denominational causes. The Grants Committee thanks Judy Larson, David R. Parker and J. Kent Pepper for their years of service, and extends a warm welcome to Pete Clow, Dr. Bill McMillan and W. Russell Scott. Nancy Burton, Jack Homestead, Judith E. Malman, Nancy Millen, Deloris H. Rhodes and Sheila Saklad also serve on the Grants Committee. For information, contact either Loretta Meyers 256-9419, [email protected] or Curtis Sewell 256-5355, [email protected]. Landfall residents are invited to the 2006 Grant Reception to be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at 4:00 PM in the Nicklaus Ballroom. 1924 Pembroke Jones Drive • Wilmington, NC 28405 • 910-256-5789 • www.LandfallFoundation.org Landfall Foundation Treasurer’s Report Contributing Chefs By Stan Nawrocki The Landfall community made 2005 another very successful year for the Landfall Foundation. More than $230,000 was raised in a record year for the organization. Expenses were held to low levels once again in 2005. The foundation’s administrative expenses were $8,900—less than 4 percent of funds raised. This achievement is testimony to the hard work of many generous volunteers. Fund raising expenses were a little less than $33,000 for the year. In 2005 fifty-nine charities received grants totaling $166,675 and the Kenan Chapel’s concert program was supported with a $5,000 grant. The foundation awarded nearly $13,000 in scholarships to Landfall POA and Country Club of Landfall employees who are pursuing studies at Brunswick Community College, Cape Fear Community College and University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The scholarship awards for 2006 are expected to increase significantly because of a change in policy, which awards a larger percentage of the tuition cost to eligible recipients. 2006 is progressing as another very good year. The “Commedia Dell’ Arte” event was a fun-filled, successful evening. Early calculations indicate that “Commedia Dell’ Arte” will have raised close to $180,000 for the foundation. The foundation expects to significantly increase the amount it distributes in 2006. The Board recently voted to change the formula calculating the allocation for grants making more money available for local charities and other deserving organizations. Remember that a gift to the foundation on behalf of, or in memory of loved ones are excellent ways to support the foundation’s work in our community. Almost one-half of the residents of Landfall supported the foundation in 2005. The community should be very proud of its support and the work the foundation is able to do because of the generosity of our community residents. The foundation continually seeks greater resident participation—any amount is appreciated. The foundation accepts Visa or Master Card in addition to checks and stock as noted on the donation form on page 11. Scholarship Program Report By Stan Roman For fiscal year 2005 the Landfall Foundation budgeted $20,000 for employee academic scholarships and $10,000 for future endowments. The CCL/POA employees are required to meet both employment and academic standards in order to be eligible for the scholarships that reimburse up to 50 percent in-state tuition and fees. I am pleased to report that during 2005 the foundation awarded 21 scholarships in the amount of $12,073. During the year the Landfall Foundation Board also made the following significant changes to the scholarship program: reimbursements to employees would be made after successful completion of the course(s) and continued satisfactory employment status; reimbursements for Cape Fear and Brunswick Community Colleges were increased from 50 to 100 percent, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington increased from 50 to 75 percent. In addition continuing education programs for self improvement were included in the available reimbursement programs. These positive changes were greatly appreciated and acknowledged by the academic institutions, employees and CCL/ POA management. For fiscal 2006, the foundation budgeted $25,000 for scholarships. As of March 31, 2006 the foundation had awarded 17 scholarships in the amount of $16,826 reflecting the significant increase due to the above noted changes. A reminder to all that Landfall community members can designate their contribution on the donation form on page 11 to a specific academic institution, namely the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Cape Fear Community College and Brunswick Community College. An investment in education is an outstanding contribution to the future of our great Nation. 1924 Pembroke Jones Drive • Wilmington, NC 28405 • 910-256-5789 • www.LandfallFoundation.org 5 Landfall Foundation Making A Difference In Our Community 2005 Donations—A huge thank you to all! The energy level was still soaring as guests entered the ballroom for the night’s entertainment and auction. “The Other Side” improv group had everyone laughing at their antics. Marty Allran and Howard Bollinger belted out songs such as Stormy Weather and A Good Man is Hard to Find between auction items. Cirque du Soleil characters, Eleanor and Hershel, assisted Alan in their delightfully bumbling manner. Along with the entertainment, Alan Perry worked his own special magic with the auction items: magnificent jewelry, art, sculpture, sporting events, trips and fine dining, to name a few. The auction items brought forth the generosity and competitive spirit of the gala guests. When all was said and done, Commedia Dell’Arte made history for the Landfall Foundation as the most fun evening in our ten-year life span, and thanks to the generosity of sponsors, donors, bidders and guests, it is also the foundation’s most successful event from a fund-raising perspective. What this all means is that more worthy organizations in the greater Wilmington area will benefit, once again demonstrating the Landfall community’s commitment to having fun while “doing good.” Adam Cardin and Kiyo Takahashi Donations (Continued from page 7.)
