He was given the scroll to read and found the passage from Isaiah. He proclaimed the word. After he has done proclaiming the word, he told those in attendance that the word they heard is actually made flesh. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is bringing glad tidings to the poor, announcing freedom to the slaves, recovery of sight to the blind, help to the oppressed and proclaiming a year acceptable to the Lord. Jesus’ proclamation of the word is not different from any one who proclaims the word in the synagogue except for one thing. Jesus is the Word made flesh. Jesus is not the spoken word but the flesh of the spoken word. If mercy and love are words, then Jesus is the face of mercy and love. Jesus is mercy and love. In the synagogue he did not just proclaim mercy and love. He made mercy and love come to real life because he is mercy and love. Mercy and love are exactly what Jesus did to the people given to him by the Father. o0o The ministry of lectors. Lectors are proclaimers of the word. They do the ministry of the word inspired by Jesus’ example. Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, he makes God’s blessing overflowing to those who are in need of them. Lectors are empowered by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the word and make God’s blessing present to all. It is understood that lectors understand the peculiarity of their ministry. Because their ministry is very special, they must be constantly reflecting on the Scriptures. By constantly reading and reflecting on the Scriptures, they become one and united with Christ and they can not only proclaim the word in speech but also proclaim the word in action. All of us are called to be proclaimers of the word. Sharing in the prophetic and priestly offices of Christ, we are enjoined to always read and proclaim and pray the Scripture. o0o Year of Mercy. The Year of Mercy also encourages us to contemplate on the Scripture. Reading and reflecting upon the Scriptures, especially the New Testament, we become aware of the Jesus event. Lectio Divina is a beautiful vehicle to contemplate on the Scripture. Lectio Divina gives us an opportunity to go deeper to the Word and to examine ourselves and our faith life. Lectio Divina will allow us to discover or rediscover the mercy and love of God. Lectio Divina is a simple spiritual exercise of reading and prayer. It can be as simple as choosing to read the readings for the weekend (or maybe a personal choice). Then sit down with the text. Read it slow and pray with it. And relate it to your daily life, your challenges, your joys, your blessings. Then close every reflection with the Lord’s Prayer. To make your Lectio Divina ‘worth it’, plan to make a course of action and get the plan done. Today, we will take up the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC).
