Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet. 9:00 am Anna Marie Catoir Our Family Prayer 5:30 pm Colin Rusovich Monday, August 22 9:00 am Fr. Michael Becker Wednesday, August 24 9:00 am Harold Steppe Thursday, August 25 9:00 am William John Hammond Friday, August 26 9:00 am Deceased Grandson of Joseph Maples Family Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. The St. Catherine of Siena Women’s Club will have their quarterly general meeting on Thursday, August 25 at 6:30pm in the Barrett Complex. If you are not yet a member, please consider joining us for this meeting and becoming a member. The club’s purpose is to “promote the spiritual growth of the members, to provide members with service opportunities benefiting SCS parish, its ministries, and the greater community, and to promote fellowship and community among the women of the parish”. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Couvillon at [email protected]. If you’re curious about the Catholic faith or you’ve even thought about becoming a Catholic, our Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is just for you. Adults from all faith traditions, or no religious background at all, are welcome to participate in our program of instruction. The program focuses on four essential areas: what the Church teaches; how the Church teaches; the Bible; and spirituality. The process begins with an “Inquiry”: period, when questions lead to exploration. Drop in—no obligations, no commitments, no pressure at our first meeting on Sunday, August 28, 2016, 9 to 11am. If you’d like to take this journey of faith, contact the RCIA Director: Kurt Garcia at 957-7100 or 455-9043, or email kurtgarciarciagmail.com or for more information go to http:// sites.gogle.com/site/kurtgarcia/home. Additional Photo Days for Picture Directory: August 26—28 If you did not get to have a picture taken for the photo directory please note that we have opened some additional dates. The photographers will be at St. Catherine in the Melancon Center on Friday, August 26 from 2pm until 9pm, Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, from 10am until 5pm. You can sign up online (see the link on the parish website) or call Georgine at 813-9679 or Debbie at 267-9504. Please help us to make this a successful effort! Not Married in Catholic Church? What better time than during this Year of Mercy to review the circumstances of Catholics marked outside of the Church to consider what could be done that could lead to a sacramental marriage blessed by our Church. Pope Francis has made procedural changes to annulment procedures. If you are interested, please come to a meeting in the Melancon Center, Room 2B on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 7:00pm. If you are interested and cannot make the meeting, please email Deacon Coney at [email protected]. Life Line Screening: September 21 St. Catherine of Siena Parish is pleased to offer a preventive health event. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on September 21, 2016 in the Melancon Center. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60—90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/ communitypartners. Poor Box Franciscan Sisters of St. Bernadette Total Collection A few months ago we installed key fobs around campus. The second phase of this project is rekeying the existing locks. All locks will be re-keyed in the next week. If you have an old key, they will no longer work. If you need a new key, please see the parish office. SVdP Thanks You!! The members of St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Catherine want to thank everyone for their generosity, and we would like to give an accounting of how the money was spent in the quarter that ran from April 1 to June 30. We spent $26,900 serving the poor. That included helping 38 families with their bills, such as rent and utilities, and stocking our food pantry so that we could give out 378 bags of groceries and also provide 190 people with a nutritious lunch. We served meals at Ozanam Inn and ran Bingo at a nursing home. The money donated by St. Catherine parishioners allowed us to send a donation to a parish on the Northshore dealing with the March flooding, and to support the SVdP Pharmacy and the SVdP Adult Learning Center. Thank you to all of you who made this work possible, and to the SCS Women’s Club for their help with the lunch bags! Lighthouse Media Kiosk Beginning the weekend of August 27/28, we will have a new Lighthouse Media kiosk located in the Narthex of the Church. It will be stocked with low-cost Catholic resources including professionally recorded audio presentations from the world’s best Catholic speakers, life–changing Catholic books, informative booklets and pamphlets and more. For more information contact Michelle Alley in the parish office. Youthful Elders Please remember there will NOT be an August Youthful Elder meeting! Also, the trip to Kenny and Juanita’s camp has been cancelled. This trip will take place at a later date. Please watch the bulletin for more details. New Parishioners!!
