Academic Travel Abroad Itinerary: France
Day 1: Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016
We depart on our transatlantic flight to Bordeaux, France.
Depart
Day 2: Monday, Dec. 12
Bordeaux 1
Upon arrival at Bordeaux Mérignac Airport, we are met by our driver and local guide. We transfer to the
center of Bordeaux to enjoy an introduction to this beautiful city, France’s ninth largest and the hub of the
famed wine region. Our guide will take us on a tour of the major sights of the city, including the Grand
Theatre, St Andrew’s Cathedral, Esplanade des Quinconces, Place de la Bourse, and Pey Berland Tower.
We enjoy a welcome dinner at our hotel this evening. B, D 2
Day 3: Tuesday, Dec. 13
Bordeaux
After breakfast we drive to nearby St. Émilion, a stunning medieval village and UNESCO World Heritage
site located in the middle of the vineyards. Upon arrival a local guide takes through the steep streets, past
city ramparts, and into old monasteries, introducing us to the diverse history of this place. We enjoy free
time to have lunch and explore the village on our own before a wine tour and wine-tasting. B
Day 4: Wednesday, Dec. 14
Bordeaux
This morning we have the opportunity to tour the University Hospital Center of Bordeaux, which serves a
wide region of southwest France. Because it is a medical center consistently ranked among the top three
French centers in 14 surgical and medical specialties, our visit gives us a rare look at the French healthcare
system. We plan to spend time exchanging views with hospital staff and students. Lunch will be at a local
restaurant known for its seasonal southwest French specialties, with the afternoon free to explore
Bordeaux on our own. B, L
Day 5: Thursday, Dec. 15
Tours
We say au revoir to the enchanting city of Bordeaux and make our way towards the Loire Valley. En route
we stop in Limoges, famous for its medieval and Renaissance enamels, 19th-century porcelain, and oak
barrels used in Cognac production. We stop at a porcelain factory before enjoying free time for lunch on
our own. We continue to the medieval city of Tours, the center for Christianity in the region under its
bishop, St. Martin, in the 4th century. A guide takes us for a stroll to acquaint us with the sights and history
of the city, including the pivotal Battle of Poiters between Christian and Muslim troops in the 8th century.
Another highlight is a visit to the 13th-century Gothic Cathedral Saint Gatien, whose beautiful stained-glass
windows are original. B

Day 6: Friday, Dec. 16
Tours
After breakfast we drive to nearby Amboise for a visit of the town and one of the most historic chateaux in
the valley. The Chateau d’Amboise was the setting for an uprising against the King and the Church by early
French Protestants (Huguenots) in 1534. It created a deep mistrust between the faiths that eventually led
to the tragic French Wars of Religion in the last half of the 16th century. We enjoy lunch on our own and
time to explore before finishing our day at the Chateau du Clos Lucé, where we will walk the grounds that
were Leonardo da Vinci’s final dwelling place. B
Day 7: Saturday, Dec. 17
Paris
Departing the Loire Valley, we turn northward toward Paris, making a stop in Chartres for a visit to the
majestic cathedral, called “a sermon in glass and stone.” Almost 30,000 square feet of Biblical stories are
found in the stained-glass windows, considered to be the most beautiful in Europe. Our day ends in
France’s capital and “City of Lights,” Paris. We check into our hotel and enjoy the rest of the evening at our
leisure. B
Day 8: Sunday, Dec. 18
Paris
Our day begins after breakfast with a locally guided panoramic tour of Paris, including its renowned
landmarks: the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, Place de la Concorde, and Champs-Élysées. Our day also
includes a tour of Notre Dame Cathedral. We then enjoy lunch at the Eiffel Tower and have the balance of
the day free to continue our exploration of this historically and culturally rich city. The possibilities are
endless! Art lovers with an interest in Impressionism will want to visit the Museums d’Orsay and de
l’Orangerie des Tuileries with works by Van Gogh, Monet, and Cezanne. Other possibilities include the
Rodin Museum, Picasso Museum, or Pompidou Center. Others may wish to shop in the boutiques near the
opera house, along the Champ- Élysées, or along the wide walkways that line the Seine River. B, L
Day 9: Monday, Dec. 19
Paris
Today is a free day for self-designed discovery-learning adventures. Possibilities include the Louvre or
Versailles, which lies just outside the city. B
Day 10: Tuesday, Dec. 20
Our final day in Paris is also free for more self-designed discovery-learning activities. B
Paris
Day 11: Wednesday, Dec. 21
Return
Sadly, our journey draws to a close today as we transfer to Charles de Gaulle Airport and board our
homebound flight. We return to reflect upon our exploration of fascinating cities, medieval villages,
vineyards and chateaux; and a new appreciation for the French people and their history and culture. A la
prochaine, France! B
